I decided to root now that we have a way to return to stock and after deleting some bloatware using Titanium I have a slight issue.
When opening my gallery I get an error message saying "Samsung text to speech has stopped" I'm not sure what that has to do with viewing my photos, but it does it 2-3 times and then everything is fine.
So, do I need to return to stock to fix this if restoring via titanium doesn't work? And if so, do I need to unroot prior to returning to stock using Odin?

Which bloatware did you delete?
I just had to re-install the stock ROM last night because I deleted some of the AT&T bloatware, specifically the AT&T Messages app.
I have since learned it's better to freeze the apps first and see if any problems pop up. After about a week of no noticeable issues you should be good to delete the app permanently.
I'm waiting for one of the dev's to post a list of apps on the AT&T S4's which are safe to delete.

I deleted almost all AT&T bloatware. What issues were you having after deleting the AT&T messages app? I have that deleted as well but so far the only issue I have is the one mentioned. I think I will flash back to stock tonight and wait for a list from the devs as well

I would get the error message "Contacts has stopped" and when I would try and load contacts all I would get was a "Loading" circle spinning.
Also I started to get "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped".
I also was getting "text-to-speech has stopped".
Then I did a factory reset and the "Samsung setupwizard has stopped' which was putting me in a perpetual loop preventing me from getting into my phone at all.
Reloading the stock AT&T ROM was all I could do.
Just a note, after reloading the ROM you will lose root.

I wonder if removing AT&T Messages without ever having launched it will work.
After deleting AT&T Messages it also removed the system app Contacts Storage 4.2.2 off my S4.
I've learned it's better to freeze apps first and if no issues pop up after a week or so and several reboots, you should be good to delete for good.

This is a spreadsheet I found in another thread which was created for the S4 international version, so it won't have the AT&T specific bloatware but at least it helps for bloatware apps that are okay to delete/remove with Root.

Another odd thing I am seeing since the new update, is every time I reboot, if I go into the task manager to see all my open applications... After about a minute or so, I notice there is an app in there that says MIPerroractivity, when I click app info it says it is an app called com.sec.app.MIPErrorNotifier. Why is this automatically open like an app in my task manager when I reboot? Any ody else seeing this?

Same here. Not sure what this is, and if I should just freeze it using Titanium backup. Searched google and the first hit was this post
One of the subsequent posts indicates that this app existed on the S3 late last year too - http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...ng-galaxy-s3-sprint-version-stock-rooted.html
Same here! I'm wondering if we rename it to .bak at the end if that will affect anything... anyone willing to test that lol?

QUESTION: Is everyone here running the latest KT Kernel. Bc when I reverted back to the MF9 kernel, I didn't get that anymore...
I am bone stock, haven't even rooted it yet. First time I haven't rooted a phone right out of the gate.

Same here just updated this morning. Bone stock and not rooted. Shows up after every reboot.
I did the update myself not via ota. Did everyone else here do it that way? Or did you receive the update via ota?
Maybe its somehow related to the way sprint is rolling out the update?

Did the same thing.
I also get this PITA notice.
Only thing I have been able to find so far is it appears to have something to do with "Mobile IP ERRor".
I will not claim to know what this means.
I have noticed that I have no cell service while roaming at home anymore.
Hopefully, this is because I am slightly (1/4 mile) outside of the official roaming service area.
I am hoping I can reset the phone profile once I get back into Sprint's network later today.
I am also not sure if this is related to MY upgrading to MF9 using the manual ZIP from SD card method and not waiting for the official OTA update.
I already posted that I did the ota stock non rooted and it appears for me.

Ok, so I've been doing a little testing this AM to see if I could get to the bottom of this error.
After rebooting, locking and unlocking a ton of times I've decided its related to wifi connecting on the initial boot.
After a while I started noticing a pattern in relation to the toast message that pops up when it initially connects to wifi and the error showing up.
To confirm my theory, I removed the local wifi at my office, and on reboot, no error.
I have zero clue on how to fix the issue, but just wanted to point any devs looking into this in the right direction.
Additional notes, I'm stock, not rooted, and updated via the sdcard method.

My new GS4 should be delivered today! I am retiring my beloved Motorola Photon but am very excited at the prospects of having the best device on the market in my hands. My question concerns all of my backed up apps and games from my rooted and modded Photon. Is it possible to restore them from my saved "Titanium Backup" files to the GS4? Is it better to download the apps again from the play store and just restore the data? Thanks for any help.
most of the apps will f/c, just download them again, and save you the trouble and time.
Thanks for the reply. I will go ahead and just download all of my apps from the play store but my main concern was more about losing the app data. Can the data be restored safely via saved Titanium Backups?
I think this thread should maybe have been posted in the Q&A forum. My bad.
You should have no problem restoring the data using TB, just make sure you don't restore any system data.
On another note, since you will be getting your phone today, I would recommend that you take both firmware updates before you root. The most recent firmware is MF9, when you receive your phone it will probably be on MDC. So goto settings my device and then select update firmware and let it upgrade to MDL, then after its upgraded have it upgrade again to receive MF9. Then you can use chainfires cf-autoroot in the development section to root it and follow his instructions to load a custom recovery. This will save you a lot of headaches in the upgrade process and get you rooted with the latest software on the phone.

Enjoy the S4. :good:
I got the Photon right when it came out and someone here in our office still has one. It really shined in the short span it was one of the top devices but crazy how much of an improvement the S4 is. First thing I always notice is how much better the screen is and how much thinner the device is. Not to mention moving from GB to JB is huge.

Thanks CC. Yeah, the Photon was a great phone. Still is. Was Sprint's top device when I ordered it. I had mine rooted, overclocked and modded almost from day one and have had a custom CM10 JB rom(Thanx jokersax) on it for most of the time I've had it so I'm very familiar with JB. I'm really excited for the S4 though. Cant wait to get my hands on it. Hopefully today! First thing I'll do after I activate it will be to update the firmware to MF9. Then I'll have to figure out how to root it. Then I have no idea what I'll do as far as kernels/recoveries/roms yet. Have lots of reading to do. :silly:

Try running it with rooted stock for awhile. Maybe even with a custom launcher & kernel. You might be pleasantly surprised at how well it runs. Plus you can play with all the fancy stuff on the phone and see what you like and don't like.

Well, I got my new GS4 on Friday finally! This thing is really nice. The screen is amazing. Hard to believe how much better all of my photos look! Anyway, what I'm looking for is advice on what to do next. I just rooted it with CF Auto Root (Thanks Chainfire) and it went very smoothly. Kernels, custom recoveries so I can run a nandroid backup? Given that there's no way to reflash the factory image, is it still safe to remove all the AT&T bloat using Titanium Backup? Right now I have all the AT&T bloatware frozen and it doesn't impact anything, but I just want to if it'll change if I completely uninstall the AT&T programs i.e. My Locker, Blurb Checkout, etc. Would this impact my ability to receive firmware updates or unroot and reset the handset? I should mention I'm probably going to be selling the phone when the Nexus 5 comes out so I still want to be able to unroot and factory reset (as long as it can reset, it doesn't bother me if the AT&T bloatware is gone).
I guess that depends on what you mean by "safe."
I removed almost all of the AT&T stuff except for the update service and the hotspot app, and I know I'll never miss them even without a recovery option.
If you need a recovery option, then probably best to not remove anything and use Safestrap to experiment with other roms.
Don't delete it, freeze it. That way if you mess something up you can defrost it.
If your on MF3 I wouldn't touch anything and just use safestrap.

About the time you posted this last night I was freezing apps. Apparently too many. Phone will not boot past the at&t logo now. I can still boot into my custom rom slot 1 so I'm not at a total loss, but would really like to know if there is anyway to replace/defrost those frozen apps on the stock ROM via the ADB terminal running on my custom ROM. Seems like you could just copy and overwrite the package files on the stock ROM... Which leads me to my ultimate question of what does TiBackup Freeze option actually do? Uninstalling would remove the app and files from the system completely so since they are still present it seems there would be some sort of a control file that you could edit manually to defrost the app(s) in question.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I've read a few times that best buy can do a factory restore, yet every time someone says they are going to ask their "friend" at best buy for the method/procedure for the restore they drop off the grid... Is this a possibility?

I don't recall the urls but there are already a few in-depth lists of safe bloatware to remove from our phones..
@xda_n I'm not too sure I'm still researching on this, but haven't really been actively looking for it. Not in a rush really because I'm not going to sell my phone or anything so I'm just going to wait on Samsung to release the mf3 file via Odin or kies. I'm just using vision-x and shostock which is giving me better battery and performance than stock and still have stock feel so I'm not in too much of a rush to fix my stock ROM yet. My stock ROM would boot but it would say com.android. something and it'll freeze. I accidently tried to do a factory reset after deleting all the apps via tibu so I couldn't recover any files I saved and froze so i learned my lesson and don't want to deal with best buy right now.

Total Noob here as evident in this being my first post, but googling about how to NOT installl this Kit Kat update that has popped up on my Verizon Note 3 today has brought me here.
Is there any way I can disable this update from happening? I have heard great things about rooting and custom ROMS, and have heard that updating may jeopardize this.
So can I turn off Verizon's ability to update my phone? I delayed this, but my Note 3 wants to install the files it downloaded at 2 a.m.
Can someone give me a crash course to help me, and/or a quick way to prevent this?
Many Thanks.

This method has worked for me twice. Latest was today:

SKIP ALL THE STUFF ABOUT ODIN AND FLASHING FIRMWARE!!!! If you are stock JB, you don't need to do this part.
Then to get all the Chinese stuff off your phone, follow this tutorial:
youtube.com/watch?v=L5ebYM9CDkI&index=13&list=PLSQtCJEhU8pillzM7CZlSqFwApt7tKeWV
Finally, Install titanium backup, and freeze the program that is trying to force and over the air update. I came to the forum looking for the name of that file. Best I can find so far is: LocalFOTA v2_1308_1_1 -- but there my be others. Come back to the forum when you're rooted and search for it.
Best of luck!

The best way to not update it, is to not update it. It isn't automatic. But after updating mine, my phone is better than ever. Noticeably faster transitions & animations, and great battery. Everything works better with 4.4.2 than it did with 4.3.

The only way you can really stop it is to root and delete a file called sdm 1.0. That is the update checker. But if you are going that far you might as well install a custom rom. There are several good kk roms available now. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that if you ever want to root, you can't take the ota. There will probably never be a root method for the ota version. The leaked nc2 build is kk that is rooted by default and is the base for all available kk roms.

I just followed the guide to flash back to NCG kernel, reroot and flash NE9 kernel. So far everything is lovely except for after a phone call I always get an error: "Unfortunately, Context Service has stopped." Any idea what this is and how to fix it?

No, stock ROM. Never flashed a ROM, Knox 0x0.
I believe I found a solution. I have installed Greenify, but it was disabled under my accessibility services. Apparently that's how it is set by default after downloading it, even when rooted. I turned Greenify on under Settings < Accessibility < Greenify and rebooted my phone. I made a few calls and received one and no more Context Service Errors for me. I am quite curious as to what Context Services are and why Greenify would cause those errors as I do not see any information on it relating to the S5, so if anyone has any idea why this happens, feel free to shed some light on it.I wonder also if Context Services are safe to freeze..
Problem returned with a vengeance after several reboots. Now I boot the phone sometimes and there are no errors, other times and constant FCs. Could I have somehow gotten a corrupt Context Service apk when I flashed to Stock Odin, or the NCG or NE9 kernels? Anyone know what Context Services actually is and if it's safe to freeze if there isn't a fix? I found a similar thread for someone having this issue on the At&T variant and someone replied that his Context Service apk was possibly corrupt and that he PM'd him a new one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/help/context-services-stopped-t2837895/post54614539 If this is something that is possible to do, I would greatly appreciate it.. I've looked both on Google and here and there seems to be very little info on Context Services, so I do not wanna freeze something that's unsafe to freeze, but these errors are killing me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Totally removed Greenify and the problem is gone. I would love to use Greenify, but I would like to know I can do so without causing issues. Does anyone know how Greenify would cause ContextService FCs?
Logcat
i have a logcat of the issue occurring, both by itself and induced via having my girlfriend call my phone. i took this to the xposed forum first and was told it appears not to be module related. if anyone can give me any input on this, i would really appreciate it
i thought it was just me.. however stock rom works fine for me its my custom build i get the fc on.. i dont have greenify in my rom so not sure if thats the root cause or not.. i will try something and report back

No, since I flashed back to NCG, rerooted and flashed NE9 it's been happening. I've never flashed a rom, just rooted on stock slot in safestrap

I'm not sure if this will help but from what I've read ss has a problem when using a rom slot instead of the stock slot I've seen a lot of the rom devs change the procedure from using a rom slot to using the stock slot.

Anyone know if a Nandroid backup from before I ever originally took the OTA, stock rooted NCG, would fix my problems, and more importantly, if it would trip Knox or not if I restored it via Safestrap?
I haven't read anywhere of someone trying it yet. I was wondering too good question

plenty of posts saying safestrap won't trip knox, had not heard from anyone as to what restoring a nano would do until i specifically asked this question yesterday though... you referring to a certain thread containing these many posts? because until i asked, the safestrap thread even made NO mention of nano backups as they relate to knox...
Never had that but I did get documents have stop once an it never did it again not sure what was up with that ?
Is there an actual fix for the "Unfortunately, Context Service has stopped" error? I really made a stupid mistake yesterday and froze some system apps in Titanium Backup. At first I was getting a bootloop when the OS tried to load the apps and thought I was going to have to wipe data, but I used adb push to send the entire system/app folder to my phone (got the files/folder from my wife's phone who has the same phone on same ROM - I'm 90% sure it is the rooted KOT49K/ANCG build of Verizon GS5). This adb push allowed my phone to boot entirely, but now everytime I boot the phone up, I get the Contest Service error message. So I just backed up Contest Service 2.0.3 using Titanium Backup on her phone, then put the 3 files it created onto my phone and tried using Titanium to restore Context Service 2.0.3 to my phone but to no avail. I tried restoring app only and also restoring app+ data but the restore never completes in TB (ive changed TB to INDIRECT mode too) but it doesn't fix the problem. When I start the restore, it does stop the error message from constantly appearing but only until the next reboot.
So does anyone know how I can stop from getting this error message? I have another working Verizon GS5 on the same ROM at my disposal.
