[Q] How do I NOT update to Kit Kat - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Total Noob here as evident in this being my first post, but googling about how to NOT installl this Kit Kat update that has popped up on my Verizon Note 3 today has brought me here.
Is there any way I can disable this update from happening? I have heard great things about rooting and custom ROMS, and have heard that updating may jeopardize this.
So can I turn off Verizon's ability to update my phone? I delayed this, but my Note 3 wants to install the files it downloaded at 2 a.m.
Can someone give me a crash course to help me, and/or a quick way to prevent this?
Many Thanks.

Step 1 - Root your phone

This method has worked for me twice. Latest was today:
youtube.com/watch?v=ukajWoxI3Tg&index=12&list=PLSQtCJEhU8pillzM7CZlSqFwApt7tKeWV
SKIP ALL THE STUFF ABOUT ODIN AND FLASHING FIRMWARE!!!! If you are stock JB, you don't need to do this part.
Then to get all the Chinese stuff off your phone, follow this tutorial:
youtube.com/watch?v=L5ebYM9CDkI&index=13&list=PLSQtCJEhU8pillzM7CZlSqFwApt7tKeWV
Finally, Install titanium backup, and freeze the program that is trying to force and over the air update. I came to the forum looking for the name of that file. Best I can find so far is: LocalFOTA v2_1308_1_1 -- but there my be others. Come back to the forum when you're rooted and search for it.
Best of luck!

The best way to not update it, is to not update it. It isn't automatic. But after updating mine, my phone is better than ever. Noticeably faster transitions & animations, and great battery. Everything works better with 4.4.2 than it did with 4.3.

I don't use Gmail, so I don't know if it's working or not. I'm using Mailbox and it does have that feature and it works. Even has a multi-level zoom w/ text wrapping.

The only way you can really stop it is to root and delete a file called sdm 1.0. That is the update checker. But if you are going that far you might as well install a custom rom. There are several good kk roms available now. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that if you ever want to root, you can't take the ota. There will probably never be a root method for the ota version. The leaked nc2 build is kk that is rooted by default and is the base for all available kk roms.

New to GS4 - Couple Questions

My new GS4 should be delivered today! I am retiring my beloved Motorola Photon but am very excited at the prospects of having the best device on the market in my hands. My question concerns all of my backed up apps and games from my rooted and modded Photon. Is it possible to restore them from my saved "Titanium Backup" files to the GS4? Is it better to download the apps again from the play store and just restore the data? Thanks for any help.
most of the apps will f/c, just download them again, and save you the trouble and time.
Thanks for the reply. I will go ahead and just download all of my apps from the play store but my main concern was more about losing the app data. Can the data be restored safely via saved Titanium Backups?
I think this thread should maybe have been posted in the Q&A forum. My bad.
You should have no problem restoring the data using TB, just make sure you don't restore any system data.
On another note, since you will be getting your phone today, I would recommend that you take both firmware updates before you root. The most recent firmware is MF9, when you receive your phone it will probably be on MDC. So goto settings my device and then select update firmware and let it upgrade to MDL, then after its upgraded have it upgrade again to receive MF9. Then you can use chainfires cf-autoroot in the development section to root it and follow his instructions to load a custom recovery. This will save you a lot of headaches in the upgrade process and get you rooted with the latest software on the phone.

Or you could use the Helium app for your transfers. No root required! I was able to transfer all of my apps+data from my E4GT via WiFi with no force closes

When I switched from my tmobile note 2 to the sprint gs4, I used titanium backup to restore user apps with data. Never had any issues.
Just make sure to not backup any system data/apps only user apps

Enjoy the S4. :good:
I got the Photon right when it came out and someone here in our office still has one. It really shined in the short span it was one of the top devices but crazy how much of an improvement the S4 is. First thing I always notice is how much better the screen is and how much thinner the device is. Not to mention moving from GB to JB is huge.

Thanks CC. Yeah, the Photon was a great phone. Still is. Was Sprint's top device when I ordered it. I had mine rooted, overclocked and modded almost from day one and have had a custom CM10 JB rom(Thanx jokersax) on it for most of the time I've had it so I'm very familiar with JB. I'm really excited for the S4 though. Cant wait to get my hands on it. Hopefully today! First thing I'll do after I activate it will be to update the firmware to MF9. Then I'll have to figure out how to root it. Then I have no idea what I'll do as far as kernels/recoveries/roms yet. Have lots of reading to do. :silly:

Try running it with rooted stock for awhile. Maybe even with a custom launcher & kernel. You might be pleasantly surprised at how well it runs. Plus you can play with all the fancy stuff on the phone and see what you like and don't like.
CF Autoroot has been confirmed working for MF9: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291827

Thats what I'm gonna do for a while yeah. Thanks for the link.
Well, I got my new GS4 on Friday finally! This thing is really nice. The screen is amazing. Hard to believe how much better all of my photos look! Anyway, what I'm looking for is advice on what to do next. I just rooted it with CF Auto Root (Thanks Chainfire) and it went very smoothly. Kernels, custom recoveries so I can run a nandroid backup? What have you done??
I just upgraded from a photon...I restored about 80 apps+data, text messages and call log. I actually didnt have a single issue. Titanium rocks.

Noob guide.

Just wondering if there is anything special to know about rooting etc on the G2. Or is it as simple as others? I have had MANY android phones from Xperias to Galaxy's, htcs and most recently the Nexus 4.
Is there a noob guide on here I can't find much but admittedly I'm on Tapatalk at the minute.
How do I unlock boot loader or even can I?
Can I just fastboot flash a custom recovery?
What is this root checking that voids warranty is it like Samsung yellow triangle?
Sorry if any of this is stupid but I've never had an LG.

first things first what model of g2 do you have/ are planning on getting(to recommend proper rooting method), anyways I recommend ioroot for rooting your device(easiest way and lots of support), second to unlock bootloader and flash roms/kernels without issues you need to loki your device or get a twrp/cwm with loki built in to it. As for flashing recovery the easiest is to use freegee from the play store and choose which recovery you would like to use, once rooted the root check is in download mode it will say if it's rooted or not but using lg flash tool and going to stock removes this and there aren't any stupid questions if I do say so myself. Hope this helps any thing else let us know

That does help thanks I've learnt to ignore the unhelpful and ignorant.
It is just the international version it should arrive tomorrow. So from what I understand I can follow any root and boot loader unlock guide that matches my version. And can fully return to stock with no traces or issues?

yea pretty much as long as you don't flash the wrong file everything will be smooth anyways this is the international thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development-d802) so you can sart planning what you want to do once it arrives and trust you gonna love it
also:
root- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48709232&postcount=869 (latest ioroot and drivers)
rooting instructions- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887
recovery twrp- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 (I prefer twrp)
recovery cwm- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468858 (just in case your not a fan of twrp)
(both recoveries include loki already)
As a last note if by any chance you want to try stock kitkat (you can try official without root by flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2664933 through lg flash tool) or if you root first you can try(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665985) although you will lose custom recovery and need to use the flash tool to jump down to stock jb and start again have fun :fingers-crossed:
Similar Situation but with Sprint
Hello, I'm kinda in the same situation. except the G2 is with Sprint.
First, i'd just like to say that i can root, twrp, custom with quite a few HTC and Samsung phones but have yet to tackle an LG. It's actually my girlfriends. I told her not to accept any updates when she recieved the phone today from the local Sprint Store. So as it stands she's completely stock to my knowledge. I've included pictures.
Since she's on Sprint and NOT International, i can only assume the guides that you posted to help our other friend will not help me(or at least to an extent). I'm definitely not opposed to reading and learning, just really unsure where to start as the G2 is only split on the carrier level at Development. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

the rooting works with the g2 as long as it's stock 4.2.2 and the recovery guide for twrp plus 2.6.3.3 from here(http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/g2spr) should work but I did see somewhere that an update to the sprint model added some spark thing(I don't know what it is exactly) that does not play too well with custom kernels
on another note the reason for it splitting on a carrier level is so that no one flashes something that isn't for them which would cause lots of unwanted problems but of course if you want a rom for your model you head over to the sprint thread look for the one you want and flash away, and always remember to have a backup it can save your phones life someday
---------- Post added at 11:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:04 PM ----------
also forgot to mention there are other methods of flashing recoveries from play store like freegee, goo manager, rom manager, etc but I did not include because I am not sure wether they include loki or not which is important if you wanna flash certain roms and mainly different kernels
Wow that's some great help and info there mate thanks for all the help! Seems like everything I need all in one place. Its out for delivery today so will hopefully be playing with it by this evening.
From what I can tell from a little reading there isn't a UK KitKat officially yet at the minute? Is there any I can manually flash with minimal to zero bloat? Just standard LG software?

Well like I mentioned before if you root first you can flash this(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665985) if done correctly you keep root but will lose recovery because as of yet there isn't one and since its international bloat is minimal unlike when it's from an American carrier
Once you root, using freegee to install recovery is trivial and yes it includes Loki.
I used ioroot to root my G2 and I have no complaints, everything went through smoothly

Thanks a bunch! It seems as though this is going to be unexpectedly simple!
I highly doubt I'm going to be flashing anything other than a modified stock Rom for her. Stability, battery life, with no bugs is all I'm looking for as it's not my phone. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Also, I get why they're split at the development level, it's just that running through the QA and General sections is a little tougher. I do so appreciate all the help and advice!

Replacing factory firmware!!!
Hello,
i Am newbie here, recently i brought a LG G2 D802 supposedly from a EU store and i am in Finland, but to my surprise the software firmware is Asia made, Hong Kong to be particular. it goes like this, D80210b-HKG-XX build JDQ39B kernel 3.4.0. With this original Stock software, the 4G option is not shown( i know it can be done by hidden menu but i want to get a permanent fix); the MMS setting althought i did it manually by inserting the values provided by the Network service provider.Still i am unable to get that fix.
I am in turn to contacting my seller for the correct working OPEN stock rom installed G2 but if the case does not go like that then i wish to root it to the OPEN international ROM . From what i have read, if you update then it goes back to the HKG rom, if there any way i can remove the factory rom with the OPEN Rom and receive the update OTA and it will not revert back. I have been doing my research on this but i am not able to get the answers... Hope some one will shine some light on this.
Thanks in Advance !!!

FXZ for Kit Kat released!

Are you bricked after the OTA? Here's how to unbrick it, locked or unlocked.
One other note: this is NOT an official 183 FXZ, so if this doesn't work, it won't make things worse, but you'll just have to wait for the "official" 183 FXZ.
Thanks go to stras1234 for providing a KK FXZ for those that needed it to unbrick their phone.
Another big thanks goes to SamuriHL for providing a tool to use the FXZ provided by stras1234 to make your job easier to unbrick your phone and get you running with KK.
Go here to get the FXZ and tool to help you profit in the glory that is Kit Kat on the XT926 Droid RAZR HD -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45494-how-to-xt926-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/
I have removed all my instructions as they are useless and no longer necessary with the FXZ being released.
Recommended strictly for unlocked bootloaders? Or would those of us with locked bootloaders be safe attempting as well providing we're on stock 9.30?

If you're already on stock 9.30, then it should work. I think the hang-ups for many who are manually loading it themselves via taking the OTA directly, were where if you were pushed the OTA and immediately accepted it and allowed it to go through and update it, it might have worked as long as you were unrooted on stock 9.30.
However, I chose to save the OTA off to the side (from the /cache directory) and hence, booted into the recovery manually, not realising that it installs a newer stock recovery and that's where I got hung up at. I thought the install failed, when in reality, I had to go back into the recovery and install it again. Of course, I tried using vol-down + vol-up and it wouldn't work.
If you currently have root though under 9.30, you might want to hold off until someone verifies if root can be obtained again. Because, without an unlocked boot loader, you will more than likely lose your access to root, especially if the latest "exploit" for 9.30 doesn't work under KK.
Your mileage may vary, but I don't have a locked bootloader phone to test this out on, so please, I do not accept any responsibility for what may happen if you try it, whether you have a locked or unlocked bootloader.
Thanks!
Just what I was needing to hear! I am currently rooted so I'll probably hold off. I've got a used Moto X on order though, should get it in today. After I test it out and verify that I can tolerate it and the smaller battery, then I might do some experimenting with the xt926 model I have and report back. Though, as anticipated as this update is, I'm sure someone will have already beat me to all the testing within a few hours from now lol
I'm on 9.30 with locked bootloader. I've tried your method but can't get pass signature verification. It just won't be installed on 9.30 firmware. There must be anything can be mess in updater script to avoid error signature.

I can't share the file, but if you look in the KitKat Tracking thread, you should find it there somewhere.
As an official soak tester, I'm not supposed to share the update. Technically, I'm not supposed to share ANY info, but I wanted to share this with other users who were having the same issue as I.
Thanks!
I do not believe the KK update for 9.30 has been shared anywhere.
No where that I can find. I've been scouring and following the forums waiting to find one myself.

I'm not worried about it right now, Moto Verizon just posted saying they approved the soak test and updates would be rolling out.

did your phone actually ota to 9.30 or did you use a sbf/utility and flashed it to 9.30?
the problem some people are having is, they flashed to 9.30 but the correct version they should be on is 9.18 and this post http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/44920-xt926-update-1824610-update/?p=431391 explains why thats a problem.

I flashed to 9.30. When I received the OTA from the soak push, I saved the OTA off to the side and didn't apply it immediately. Then, when I attempted to apply it (after using House of Moto to fastboot it back to 9.30 stock), it rebooted after it started applying and then went back to the recovery screen, but at that point, they had changed how you get into it. It's now volume-up + power, not volume-down + volume-up.
In any case, that second step needs to happen where you go back and re-apply the OTA.
I'm thinking if I would have taken the OTA automatically right after it downloaded, it was probably automated. That, or maybe Motorola/Verizon decided to make it a game and see if people could figure it out? :silly:
Safe root for me was a no go. But kitkat is pretty nice!

Thanks for all the info. Got KK up and running
I used these instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52602576&postcount=1
and I used this file - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52610188&postcount=11
All last night I tried using the leaked file someone put up from that "slow ass Chinese server" haha. Long story short, it didn't work at all.
This morning I tried again, and nothing. So I tried this file (the one I linked up top) and it worked like a charm. I installed it via recovery, phone rebooted, used vol up + power to get into new KK recovery, applied leaked file again, and boom I got KK.
As someone in another thread said, during the update it does say "Phase 1 possibly complete". WTF is that all about?
I've flashed my Razr Maxx HD to Kitkat using that slow Chinese server. I'm so happy it runs much smoother than JB. Everything seems fast and smooth. The new aosp lockscreen is much better than blur lockscreen. The aosp messaging is also nice. I can live without root for a while coz I already have a Photon Q modding to max. The only thing I dislike is the stock launcher which is not transparent anymore. So,I replace it with Nova Launcher Prime. It looks better now. Btw,I'm using GSM network and I notice signal is better than previous JB.

Double check before I root

I just acquired a GS4 from ATT today. it is:
Android 4.4.2 (which I upgraded myself)
Baseband V: I337UCUFNC1
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545 But I wanted to make sure there is not anything newer or different since then. I wasn't able to find anything else by searching. I'm trying to root this phone to use CyanogenMod. Unfortunately, my phone is not supported in their list of easy installs.
Can someone verify the steps for me to root and flash Cyan to this model phone before I pull the trigger? Thanks!

You can't flash anything other than Touch Wiz Roms. That guide and ones like The Ultimate All in one Guide will be a starting place. No custom recoveries either.

So what's the problem? ATT? too new a hardware version? I have the worst luck with this stuff - if I buy a router to flash a custom firmware like Tomato, it's the ONLY version that isn't supported. crazy.
I'm not sure what a custom recovery is unfortunately. That said, can I root this phone at all? I guess if I can't flash the rom I want to use, can I at least install titanium and freeze all the crapware that I don't want running?
btw - thanks for the response.

Any build after mdl has the bootloader locked down. If you read thru those two threads OP pages you get an idea. You will also need to get familiar with SafeStrap. I am on the old build and can use an exploit called loki-doki to bypass Sammy's security check and allow kernel to flash.
There may be some new stuff on rooting NC1, but I don't keep up. Basically you had to go back to mk2 to root then go back NC1 and use SafeStrap to flash only TW roms. The SafeStrap thread will explain that. But, it creates slots on the System partition again fooling Sammy. More or less--
Like I said not an expert as I don't have the issue you have with bootloader. But that is the gist of it. Just need to read up so you don't brick--good luck.

New way to root is call towelroot. Google it or search for it around here the link is everywhere. It's an apk file made by geohot (same guy that jail broke the iphone and ps3). Once you root you can install safestrap. If you've ever owned an droid device they have something identical called boot strap. Think of it as a dual boot of sorts. Definitely keep your eyes on these threads as well as the sgs5 thread. If an exploit is discovered it'll probably be for the s5 and will be compatible with our s4 (towel root was made for the s5 but works for a whole bunch of devices)

I was in the same boat as you 2 weeks ago, bought a NC1 and wanted CM, and used this to root. I currently use the Google Edition ROM that has been modified to work on locked bootloader phones, though it does have it's fallbacks. For someone new I'd recommend GoldenEye, just click the link on my signature to download it.
Good luck!
Oh, btw--check out GEOHOT's Towelroot thread in General for NC1. I knew I forgot one. That was the recent method I was thinking of. Not sure which of threads are best for you--depends what you want to do.

I just towelrooted. It worked! I was watching this video http://gs5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/r...nt-even-at-t-verizon-20-seconds-flat-0155617/ and I did it while I Was watching the video. On my device, it did not even reboot - i just said "should be rooted" so I loaded a root checker and sure enough, it is rooted! took all of about 8 seconds.
Now, on to a rom.
I'm confused now. Why can I not use CM? I read about SafeStrap and I understand it's sort of a dual boot setup - I get that. So, in a sense, I'm not really installing FRESH, a new rom - at least not in the sense that you format your hard disk and install a new OS. However, what ARE my choices in roms? I know the whiz touch, and now the golden eye, plus the google modified - but what else? I want something cut down, simple and battery friendly. I'm not a super power user and I don't require much. Actually, battery life is the most important thing to me.
This is my business phone - I use Gmail, SMS, maybe take a few pictures - and I listen to podcasts. very basic user. Advice?

MDL builds have an exploit that allows the kernel to flash. That is loki-doki. Bypasses the Sammy security check to allow this. There is no exploit yet for post MDL builds. Hence you can only flash stock Touch Wiz kernels, thus only roms that have them. So, no aosp based roms. In one of the threads in General that talk about MK2/NC1 etc is a list of roms for you. I forget the technical coding side of SafeStrap. But, it puts roms in System bypassing the bootloader. But, no way of doing that with aosp roms yet.
I am old and don't retain things much anymore if they are not very important to me. So, although I have read up on this stuff, and have a "45 year old" Engineering Degree, I don't need SafeStrap having the MDL bootloader. So, don't remember all that I have read. But, what I said is the basics of it.
Your roms need to have SafeStrap option in the rom thread's OP page. If not listed, it won't work. Having said all that things like Towelroot are new and more options may come along. :good:

4.4.4 OTA update with root

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Is there a way to install this update without having to use odin and flashing stock? I dont want to lose all my appz settings etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I still have the unlocked lock on the note 3 splash screen after reboot and the OTA fails....says error at install screen. I have read other people have done what i have done and the update worked. What im asking is am i overlooking something? Is it really even possible without using odin and reverting to stock even though i have read people have had sucess????

If you want the benefits "fixes" of the latest, would be be smart to Odin stock so you are clean when you take the OTA.

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…
