Blurry images in browser - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This issue is really frustrating me as I've never had this with any other phone, and I cannot figure out how to fix it. But in all the browsers, when I open a site like facebook, and someone has posted an image, it is so blurry I cannot make it out. If I click on it it takes me to a very small size image that is clearer, but as I said very small. There is a clickable link for a full size image, but then it goes to download the image on my phone! So frustrating!! Also pictures in people's photo galleries on Facebook are very small and nothing I do will make them larger. I can't pinch to zoom in or double tap the screen, nothing makes the pictures larger. I don't know what's going on?? I've checked every setting I can find, but nothing relates to image size and/or quality.

Am I the only one with this issue? Do I possibly have a defective phone?

If you're phone is displaying other things sharply and it's only Facebook or browser then it's software. You're phone is fine.

Okay, well everyone on Sprint would have the same software right? So why isn't there more people complaining about this?? I can't find any info at all regarding this problem. It's bizarre. And it's not just on one browser either, it doesn't matter if I use IE, minidolphin, or Chrome.

Flash enabled though.
It has something to do with the fact that the Hummingbird SoC is not optimized for flash acceleration.
Someone post a video scrolling around Android central zoomed out like that with Flash disabled so we can tell how much of that lag is actually caused by Flash.
I went to both anandtech.com and androidcentral.com to try to replicate the issues witnessed in those videos.
No problems whatsoever. Scrolling is fine, even when not zoomed in. Pinch-to-zoom is fast. Flash is enabled.

What's your definition of fine? It would still be great to get a video so we can judge for ourselves.

Not fine like that, no.
SADLY: the LAG in the browser is indeed there - and it shows up only after you have installed a decent number of apps (i have 67).
This is EXACTLY how it was on the SGS until Samsung released a fix.
Out of the box, it hardly lags - but as soon as i install some apps the lag starts. not always, but it is there.
shame.

Seriously?
YES i complain about lad with 67apps installed where my droid X has 100apps and there is zero lag.
My Nexus one has 110apps and there was no lag.
Solution:
Stick with Droid X or Nexus One. I use my phone heavily for work (2 Exchange accounts used all the time, 1 GMail) and I develop Android apps and have never had the need for more than 20-25 apps. Out of those 67, 30-40 can be useful tops, but 67, no way jose
Web browsing is smooth and fast. I think I like this phone better than the Vibrant. So far so good, no issue.
My mytouch 4g was definitely smoother when it comes to scrolling. It also automatically re-wrapped the text when I used pinch to zoom. With the nexus s it only re-wrapps text when I use the zoom control buttoms on the display.

Browser is not at all improved from my Nexus One. EXTREMELY disappointed and the main reason why I will probably return this phone within the 30 days.
what i noticed is that flash (mostly ads) is causing the lag on my phone. i dont need flash all of the time so it went into the browser settings>enable plugins> and set it to on demand. that way flash isnt loading all of the time, only when i click on a certain flash element that i want to watch. makes pages load faster and probably saves battery too.

[Q] Facebook contact pictures low res...why?

Has anyone found a workaround/fix for the low res contact pictures when sync'd with Facebook?

I've noticed the same with some people's fb profile photos. Others look ok. I thimk it just depends on the photo they use. It probably looks great on their computer screen, but is likely so far from the size needed by the Android fb app to be clear, that re-sizing reduces clarity greatly. And since it's other peoples pics on their profiles, you cant really change or edit them. So I doubt theres gonna be a real workaround, short of asking all your friends and family to use much smaller profile pics.

honestly, if you could use Google, like I did for this same problem only days ago... you would find out that this is a prevalent error that doesn't seem to have much of a fix.
I have thought about just saving a folder of contact pictures and seeing if manually assigning them would resolve the issue. but I believe the actual issue lies with Google sync or the Dialer only using thumbnails for the contact pictures.
I had Googled but no-one seemed to have any real idea about the reasons behind it happening. I appreciate there is no genuine 'fix' for it but I wondered if the infinite wisdom that is the XDA Forum could shed any light onto an otherwise grey area. Does anyone know if Google are doing anything (if they can) to fix it for future releases?

Very annoyed at this point with the browsers on this device!

So obviously I go to XDA everyday to look up information and post things. Well this has been huge chore for me with this device.
First off I have found that the dolphin browser slightly edges out the android browser for being the fastest. Even the dolphin browser can't handle quick replies and posting from the XDA 2010 browser very well. When I switch to the classic theme I am able to get more done. If I try to blaze away in the the 2010 theme I will get double button pushes and a ton of mis spellings.
This brings me to my next gripe. Say I write a block of text in a quick reply window and there are mis spellings (which there will be with a software keyboard) trying to fix these mistakes makes me want to throw my tablet at the guy sitting behind me a work. The little green arrow never lines up with the cursor, and when I go to move the cursor it is just all over the place and 2 seconds behind my finger presses on the screen.
I would remedy all of this by using the XDA App but it crashes constantly.
Also trying to do things such as login to Facebook and browse around make the device want to roll over and die. JESUS MY CELL PHONE HANDLES FULL HTML WEBSITES. I can honestly say that if the text editing were better I could live with not being able to run the 2010 theme. But why the hell does Facebook chug so hard? And why cant this damn thing load the 2010 theme???? Its a text website with minimal pictures!!!
so LOL
In editing that last post I realized that even though the arrow doesn't line up with the cursor it still functions correctly, you just have to deal with its random behaviour I guess. Also if you zoom considerably it helps a lot with text editing. Who woulda thought?
This still doesn't explain the poor performance on a lot of websites.

The XDA app is working fine for me, and judging by other people's signatures, it's the same for them too.
On the other hand, the general browser stability is pretty poor over all. Dolphin and the stock browser will just quit on me without warning. I was loving Moreno browser on my phone (Droid X), but, while it renders perfectly well, it FCs too much.

I use opera, no real issues except with load time which feels slower.
As for keyboard I'm using the hacker's keyboard. I love it more than ASUS or default.
You can draw the green arrow around after it appears if you're having issues getting it to position correctly.
I had a problems with XDA where I could not navigate to the previous page.
Most site work fine but on XDA and Yahoo when I hit the back button, it only refresh the current page and stay there. This is both the default and Dolphin HD browser.
The only one that let me navigate to previous page is Opera, I use it when I don't need flash.
On a positive note I just update to Prime v1.4 ROM today and it seems to be much better. It's letting me navigate back.

Im using the prime rom as well and haven't experienced any force closes or problems navigating back. Only the editing problems and overall slowness.
It feels like I'm using Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 6.
That said, most problems can be solved by rebooting.
Its a shame this is such a miss, given it's the primary reason for the device to exist for many people.
I can say it got significantly better with the 3.1 update and a modded rom, but its still not where it should be.

I did too, back when everyone was 3.0.1. The zoom and a500 played smooth in YouTube app while my TF struggled, although my video quality was much better.
I wondered if zoom and a500 had different HQ settings, wondered if all were actually using 720p, if HQ mode was really 720p for all the devices, or some were 480p scaled to 720p. That would explain to me any performance differences. With 3.1, this now called HD.
My YouTube app at 720p full screen on TF 3.1 is very good, no need to O/C to improve this app. Browser is another story, but I'm not convinced it uses H/W acceleration (yet).

Interesting thoughts. The responsiveness increase I noticed was in stock browser and home screen usage.
Just an update.
I am currently using Opera forced in desktop mode only. This is the fastest scolling and zooming browser there is. The only thing I hate is how opera functions when selecting text off of a page to copy. It is really cheap. I also like the fact that I can add any search engine to the browser. I couldnt stand how every time I did a Google search it would search through Google mobile, so I just added the main Google search and all was fixed.
Typing on forums has been a breeze for the most part with opera, now if I can just find a way to use the Native copy and paste on web pages it will be almost perfect. At least when editing text or web page URLs it uses the native highlight feature.
I gave up. I really hope by tf2 both device and os have ironed out kinks.

Such crappy apps.

I've been trying to find the perfect app for photos (particularly for my Flickr photostream) and what an abysmal lot of apps they are. The only one that seems like it might be good is FlickFolio but you have to pay to find out if it is. There is no free trial version or light version. I've tried nearly all of the free alternatives including Flickr's ofiicial app and that is terrible (Stuck in portrait mode on the tablet until you open a photo fullscreen and then it suddenly allows landscape mode. Exit fullscreen and it is stuck in portrait mode again). JustPics HD is sorta OK but has an issue where it makes the screen go full brightness when you show a photo fullscreen. Also it only shows sets instead of the photostream.
Don't even get me started on the inbuilt photo viewer. Complete garbage (why do I want to see every image stored in my books folder! Sheesh!).
This seems to be the way with a lot of apps on Android though. They seem to cater for either phone users or tablet users and rarely both. I don't have experience of Apple stuff but I am guessing things are a little more together over in the Apple apps camp.
EDIT: Sorry just having a bit of a moan.
Give Quick Pic a try. It's free and works nicely as a photo gallery for viewing local content on all my Android devices...you can choose which folders to include or exclude and the image rendering is very fast.
Id get flickfolio, really good app has all your stream and sets and so forth.
It stores it a set amount locally also so you can view while offline.
I've sworn by quickpic for a very long time but since the last few updates my albums sometimes take up to 90 seconds to load.

Problem with facebook

Don't know if its just me but is anyone else finding Facebook unusable. I updated it the other day for her and now she keeps complaining to me that its takes about half an hour just to scroll threw it as all the pictures are to big and keep taking up the whole screen
It's Facebook's new timeline update. It's how it is. Lol.
Think she will have to get used to it about time her fingers did some work anyway
Yeah, they didnt really take into consideration how the pictures would look on larger landscape devices. I'm sure it looks ok on phones, but tablets....yeah that's a different story.
Had a quick look on it today every picture takes ages to scroll threw. The only good thing is at least she will leave my tab alone now

Friendcaster is by far the best Facebook app, and FAR better than the official one.
Better interface, faster, easier to navigate, integrated Facebook Chat.
Only problem at the moment seems to be inbox messaging, though I believe that is being sorted.
I tried out Friendcaster and the UI is nice, and seems faster but the photos don't work. They are all pixelated. Also, I had it open and was switching between that and FB for android. Friendcaster was missing a bunch of posts that FB was showing. Not sure what the issues are. Why can't something just work the way it should?

Do you really think that was at all helpful? The iPad is not the end all and be all. I vastly prefer my Galaxy Tab because I wanted a full featured tablet computer, not a giant iPod Touch.
Getting back on topic, I agree that Facebook really screwed up their latest update. The pictures aren't handled right at all. It seems they've forced the app to behave like it's on a phone and are snubbing tablets all together.
However, if you don't mind viewing Facebook in portrait mode, it's fine. The photos are only screwed up when viewing in landscape mode. I hope they get their act together and fix it soon.
My friends have iPads and they complain about the same issues. The application does the same on both devices. Its just reformating the mobile page contents...

Why faccebook who has so many users, can't update their app to use tab's screen size? After all, tablets become more and more popular and recent days.

Because whoever is responsible for developing their mobile apps is utterly incompetent. They have always sucked and Facebook really doesn't seem to care, probably because they want people to access the site via web browser so they can shove all their ads in their faces.
well, if you have a tablet, FB is perfectly usable in the browser. As far as the ads, would you rather pay to use FB instead?
