I suspect the infrared sensor in front is sipping some of my battery life. However, I can't seem to turn it off! I turned off all the Smart Stay and Motion and Gestures and Air View crap, but when I use my camera to take a photo of my GS4, I can still see the infrared sensor lighting up.
Any idea how I could turn Infrared off completely?

Have you tried just rebooting the phone?
Sometimes the senson gets stuck on on my Note 2 after a phone call, despite having "quick glance" turned off. Reboot sorts it out.

One is a proximity sensor (turns off the screen when it's up against your face during a call) and the other is a light sensor (for the backlight's auto-dimming function)
its how the gov't is tracking you.
actually i'm glad as all the other phones get front face cameras i won't have one, no one needs to see my ugly mug.

dont think its coming to this country but the rest of the world uses it, at one point last year we were headed in that direction but the minmo7 devices turned it down unless the companies are still waitin to unleash the devices but the network can handel the data

If you want to get real technical about it, one of the holes is a light sensor that is sensitive to daylight for backlight brightness control and IR for proximity sensing, the other hole is an IR led that turns on during a phone call. When you hold the phone next to your face the IR led bounces off your skin and back into the 1st hole telling the HD2 that you have it near your face.
Try this, initiate a cell call on the HD2, then hold a video camera over those 2 holes. you'll see the IR LED lit up. It only lights during a cell call. Even better if you have a sony camcorder with nightshot mode activated, though just about every CCD/CMOS sensor is sensitive enough to IR even with the internal IR filter in place that you should be able to see it
Im going to take a guess that the IR led isn't just constantly lit, but likely pulse width modulated to some frequency the HD2 recognizes that way the light sensor can tell the difference between the IR bounce back and ambient light. I couldn't tell with my camera that it was PWM, but it could quite likely be at a frequency greater than 30hz, which you wouldn't be able to see on a standard video camera at 30fps. you'd need a high speed camera, or another IR sensitive photo diode attached to an oscilloscope.

I think you're looking at the notification led on the far left of the earpiece speaker grille. I highly doubt you can see the IR LED with your naked eyes. Were talking about the two dots under the glass just to the left of that.

That sensor is not a front camera. its a photodiode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photodiode i guess you could call it a 1 pixel camera lol

Believe me i can tell if it is an LED otherwise I wouldn't be doing my masters in electronics
and to answer your question, it definitely not the notification LED or the light bleeding from it into the adjacent space. when a call is in progress and it is very dark around, you can just make out the faint blinking.

Yep, very weak red light is normal. That's because it rather bright near infrared light.
Okay i can see i call and sometime when my phone is in standby have anyone this problem?
And when i test the sensor with AndroSensor than can i see rhe redlight. Some people says on a forum that the sensor cans see of the phone wet is with water...

My proximity sensor will lit up the red light whenever I open up TalkBox app, I don't understand why as that app doesn't even use proximity sensor, maybe a bug or coding error in the program.

i guess its a wetness sensor.. as i just experienced this issue some time back...
i had just taken a bath n my cell starting ringing, i went ahead n received the call without drying myself. As soon as i ended the call my screen went off, there was this red light coming out of one of the sensors, and the phone wasn't even switching on. I had to remove the batteries and place them back after which it started like normal.

Talkbox uses the proximity sensor to determine how you are listening to your messages. If you hold the phone up to your ear then it will play the message through the earpiece. If you hold it away from your face then it will use the speaker.

It may be a bug or something... Did you try updating your phone, or flashing a new stock/custom ROM to see if the problem remains ?
Proximity sensor which is located beside the front facing camera will always be activated whenever you're in a call. It's slightly red in colour, and more noticable in a dark room. To see the proximity sensor in action you can go to the phone dialer and key in *#0*# and it will bring up the LCD test. Select sensor and you can see the red light of the proximity sensor being lit up. Hover your finger or an object over the proximity sensor (need not to be covering the sensor) and the phone will vibrate and so will the background change to green.

nope not with the g2 if the led is disabled then it doesn't light up for nothing(I just checked to make sure I don't say something dumb)

What is next to the sensor?

Sorry,i guess it would be the light sensor right?

Proximity sensor doesn't utilize a red light. Maybe you have a malfunctioning notification light?

This is not a concern. The proximity sensor is an infra red sensor and emits a faint amount of visible red light. All of the S5's do that, it's normal and it is no barrier to great battery life.
If you did a forum search you would find existing threads where this has been asked and answered before. The glow probably represents the average bias current as the sensor periodically polls it's environment every x ms. In any event it's normal and expected behaviour.

After a fresh reboot, there may not be any apps using the proximity sensor. But a lot of apps do make use of it, so as soon as you use an app that does, the sensor will start monitoring and there will be that glow.
I don't think that the sensor uses much battery in most apps as mine is usually on. Even my screensaver makes use of the sensor and I still get great battery life.

Hey guys ,
I was thinking about this today. Can the Heart Rate Monitor's Red LED be used as a notification light? And customize the way it flashes to tell you vaguely what the notification is about before you check your phone? I sometimes leave my phone upside down; Even the dedicated LED on the front isn't bright enough to see if there is any notification.
Anyways let me know,
Thanks
I want that too
I was wondering about the same thing
good to see other users on the same boat with me
I want it to be turned on in-call and as a notification LED
is that possible ? anyone ?
I thought a lot more people would be interested in this. Having notification LEDs on both sides of the phone and having the back LED really bright red.
Any update on this?
or at least a way to make the standard LED notification way brighter...my note 2 have a bigger and brighter LED than the Note 4, I hope someone can find a way to make this happen...

i know that Emotion kernel has a few settings to send more voltage to the notification led, and to make it pulse instead of blink.
and it's also easy to make a profile in tasker to make the camera flashlight flash or pulse when you get a call or whatsapp message or whatever you want
you'd have to be pretty deep asleep or almost blind to miss that then
i don't think it's possible to use the heart rate sensor for notifications though, since it's a sensor and not a light
hope it helps a bit :good:

I did use the camera flash as a notification LED for calls. But I don't like it as it is too much like a flash (duh) For example my buddy was sitting in the train in NY and had his phone in his hand and when he got a call, the flash came on and there was a girl sitting in a short skirt across from him who thought he was taking upskirt pics, lol.
And having a red LED on the back is something different and a little better than a white bright flash.
I don't know much about phone coding, but would there be a way to trigger the sensor into thinking that it is taking a measurement, when you receive a notification?

it's probably possible if you can find the hardware path for the sensor, then you could use it with a tasker profile or make it in a mod.
But i have no idea how to find that path, and IF it even works then

Well I know for a fact that CM does have support for the sensor, and its not a hardware coded sensor as it can be used through the S Health app on the PLAY Store. So if you really wanted to know where to start looking I would say start there.
You could decompile the S Health app and see what portions of the system it access's to use the sensor and then develop from there.
I think it's rather hard, not to say impossible if you're not working for Samsung
