That is old news.
Yes, I have, there is a small line right under the notifications bar that you can open and slide.
And it never hurts to put helpful tips in for new comers, it would be difficult to search for something you don't know!!!!!!!!!
And new tips beat old complaints!!!!!!!!!!
LOL... holy Smoly... I knew that messing with the notification bar messes with your brightness.. but I didn't know you could control it like THAT! IF you drag it to the LEft it dims, Drag to the Right it gets brighter.. nice find. more things to show off to my friends..
Its quite a cool f3eauture of touchwiz,

I hate it, wish I could disable it, because I always make my screen brighter by accident.

I searched around the forums and did not see anything else posted about this. I just bought the WiFi only Xoom and am very happy with it, except for the fact that the bottom edge of my screen is darker and dimmer.
To clarify a little bit, I mean the edge of the screen thats next to the ports on the bottom of the Xoom. Normally its impossible to notice since I usually hold my xoom in landscape and there is the black bar at the bottom. If I open a pdf file or ebook, and then view it in portrait mode, I notice a darkening of the screen along this edge. It kind of looks like a shadow or a very slight black blur. The darkness is not that exaggerated but once I noticed it, I could not stop looking at it when reading.
Now I normally go on a witch hunt for problems with new devices when I first get them. The more I pay for them, the harder I look. I thought at first I might be doing this with the xoom and kind of blowing this out of proportion, but last night I was showing it off to a friend and he noticed it before I even mentioned it.
Does anyone else notice the darkness along the bottom, or do I just have a defective panel? Its easiest to see if you put your brightness around 80% and then display something that has lots of white, like a pdf or ebook, and then hold it in portrait mode.
I will post pics of it when I get home tonight.
i've noticed on all the xooms i've looked at too, including the one i bought. someone once replied that it was defective, but i think it's actually how it's made.
most people's eyes may not be sensitive enough to notice this i suppose.
I hope this is not the case. This might be a deal breaker for me since I need a device that I can read on a lot.
Can anyone else verify this?
Mines not like that. I'm using the Verizon one. I use it in portrait often.

i just exchanged my defective one (had wake issues) for a new one and guess what - dim bottom too.
that makes 8 xooms i've looked at that have the dim bottom. it's only noticable on white/light bg and if you don't have your menu bar covering it.
i picked up the wifi xoom yesterday and noticed it when togglieing the bottom right corner setting button (battery indicator). When looking at this the entire right portion of the screen dims. Other than that, it is not noticeable.

This is a purposeful UI effect (what you are talking about, not the OP).
For the OP, I looked at my Xoom diff brightness levels, angles, orientations, etc, cannot see any dimming. 3G model. Not very helpful, I know.
also, if you look at the top of the screen (landscape mode) at an angle you can see the light source. the lighting just isn't even. i'm positive that if i look at anyone's xoom i'll see it since the back lighting is made the same on all... unless they switched mfg's in production like the evo4g's did.
Well thats a real bummer. I think I might just hold onto mine for a while and maybe try and do a warranty replacement later in the year if they fix this issue.
Did you notice any 3g models having the dim bottom, madsquabbles? Or for that matter, has anyone noticed this on the 3g model?
I first noticed it on the 3G. thats when I posted my first question.
Hi
Which one is better in CM9 in your opinion?
With SoftKeys?
Without SoftKeys?
I don't get why youd even want softkeys, why would you want to waste a portion of your screen with keys that you have already have anyway
i didn't buy a device with a 5.3" screen because i like wasting screen real estate...
i did buy a device with a 5.3" screen because i like wasting screen real estate!
Tablet mode with touch keys is how i use it now.
I even disabled the original menu/back button, cause i touch them while typing.
Soft keys for the multitasking button. With such a large screen we can easily afford to waste screen real estate.
Also softkeys are not good for our SUPER AMOLED screens, they will be permanently burned to your screen after a few months!
No kidding!

So will your status bar.
I personally love the onscreen buttons. I disable the other ones and disable the backlight as well. I do this for the fact that my kids and I would constantly back out of things when grabbing the phone landscape. I like the fact that with the onscreen you have somewhere to grab the phone without backing out. And although not a big deal, its less stress not having to press the big button, and this I would think would help the longevity of the hardware button itself . But in the end, it's purely preference, oh and I don't worry about the burn in as I have mine set very low so its just noticeable and It moves when I open apps and when I go landscape.

I think that was so freaking obvious so I didn't mentioned it.
Point is, why have yet another static object on screen?

That is the main reason why I enable software keys on every ICS ROM I try! When you try on-screen keys you will feel how LONG it takes to launch the recent apps panel using the long-pres on Home button! Add to that I got very used to multitask using the recent apps softkey then physical button will only hinder my speed and will wear out in a matter of couple months
I've flashed the soft keys and disabled the back lights of the hardware keys, but how do I completely disable the hardware keys so I won't press them by accident?

I think its so freaking obvious that you're gonna have a burn in (allegedly) regardless.
Point is, why even bother trying avoid a screen burn in if its inevitable.

Point is if u enable softkey , ur status bar blend in with the keys to to bottom of the screen. Where is the another static object comes from? It is still one black bar just different position.

Have to quote this again so people are aware. Amoleds are notorious for ghosting due to pixel wear out burnout whatever you want to call it. Using the ICS on screen virtual buttons will surely destroy your screen.
That's why I also autohide my notification bar on the home screens.

Burn out is avoidable provided you don't leave static images on the screen for long periods of time. With the notification bar it is always there unless you use a launcher that hides it on the home screens and apps that have the option to hide the notification bar as well.
I use opera mobile so I can browse in full screen and not worry about static notification bars. Also use launcher pro so I can hide the notification bar.

How did you disabled them??? Is there an easy way?
I like to use the softkeys simply becuase it allows me to completely disable the capacitive buttons and use my s pen to go back, home and bring up the multitasking window pane :good:

That's one of those old wives tales.
The burn-in isn't so much related to the technology as it is related to build quality.
Most of those issues are stemming from Gnex owners, and the ones with problems usually have other build quality problems too... they just were unlucky to have a bad batch that skipped QC.
I've got a friend who had the Gnex from day one, and to this day... no burn-ins!
I would normally prefer physical buttons (ftw) but I'm going to have to agree that the Note needs "soft buttons" aka on-screen Navigations.
Why?
Because it gets annoying shifting finger to stylus and back again during the daily use.
Bonus reasons:
- without it, the device looks much better (like the Gnex or N9)
- these can be customized for colour, glow, function and gestures
Anyone else having this problem? where you press the edges with the slightest pressure and causes the screen to ripple (sorry for not knowing what its called, it happens when you press on your desktop screen...)? I actually had an ipad that did this and the apple store said it was normally caused due to water, but mine didnt have any exposure to water and i dont go around godzilla pressing my touch devices. It doesnt bother me too much, but a little more information on it would be nice Thanks everyone
All LCD screens will "ripple". It is LIQUID crystal under there.
the bigger the screen, the more noticeable it can be because the glass will flex some.
Try it on a laptop screen and you'll see the effect more pronounced.
On mine, I have to press quite harder than I normally would for just touches.
Same here. When I press along side the left edge even moderately I see the ripples. It is very noticeable when the the picture is dark such as when you close all the tabs in chrome and left with just the gray background. Not sure if its a case for concern or not.
I believe this is caused by lack of support under the left side of the screen...unlike the right side.

I dont think so simply because even with the washer mod which adds the support, it still ripples. The right side does the same also now that I noticed as does the middle of the screen.Thin glass maybe? Of co**** this is all only noticeable if you look for it with the darker background. The concern would however be longer term when/if anything occurs out of it.
I guess that is a problem with the screen separation of lift. The left side of my N7 is lifting up and I find the screen ripples when I am applying pressure on to it. However, I do the same on the right side, no ripples at all. So, I think it's a related problem.
Hey I just got my tablet Z off preorder and love it. I have noticed today that there is a bit of backlight bleed (especially on the bottom) which is really noticeable during the startup screen. Also any pressure put on the edges of the screen produces a crazy amount of light leakage. Is this normal? Are others finding this too? I would like to know before I go and exchange.

The back near the camera is fine for me.
I am more ok with the pressure marks given how thin the tablet is. That is understandable if everyone has it. I am more concerned about the two or three spots along the bottom with severe bleeding when there is no pressure put on the screen.
Do you have the same issue like in below film ? It happens when i lightly press front or back cover in top right or left down corner.

Won't be doing anything about it mate. Isn't noticeable unless you purposely press on it.
I didn't even notice it until i saw this video.
Its visible with high brightness and if you purposely preasure top right corner in the back. Somewhat happens if you preasure front too but with much higher force. Nothing to be worried about as its only visible upon application and is not visible when you hold it. Also its quite awkward /uncomfortable to hold it with just one hand and fingers just 2cm from the edge basicly like you would be trying to pinch it.
There is no bleed otherwise.
Mine has noticeable bleed along the bottom even with no pressure applied. Ill have to exchange mine.
"noticeable during the startup screen"
I have this yet almost every tablet I have had shows allot of bleed/light at startup then gone. As for pressing around the edges, left side top none. Right side no but looks same as if I press on my monitor at home. Bottom yes but its flash of tiny light and just where I press and goes right away.
My only "problem"? is battery. It charges great I just cant use it while charging. If using it it shows charging but drains still just slower drain. So I have to not use it if I want to charge it. This is a killer for me. I will be sending it back.
Battery and blacklight bleed are killers for me. No bleed here..

I exchanged the unit and now I have no bleed. Very happy. As far as the drain goes, I notice this someones on my Xperia Z phone. Im tending to think that as these devices become more powerful, the battery used to operate them is being used at a faster rate than they can be safely charged at. It sucks but not a deal breaker for me.

Yes as expected. I find this reasonable given the thinness of the screen. I was more concerned about the bleed without pressure.

Also do you have trouble with the touch screen not fully working when the back of the tablet is on against something? Like with mine when I'm in bed and put the tablet against my pillow the touch screen won't work as much especially on the middle part. Wonder if I'm the only one has this problem.

Serious light bleed on the bottom of the screen
Bump on this one..!
Guys I have exchanged 4 different units , 1 black and 3 whites Xperia Tablet Z LTE, over the past week here in Greece and ALL of them have serious backlight bleeding issues on the edges and especially on the bottom of the screen !! Really annoying when wathing full HD videos which have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen
I cant believe there are only a few reports about this issue here. Could this be a bad batch here in Greece ?
Have you all checked with the light bleed app and 100% brightness in a dark room??
I notice a bit of shadows from The buttom of the screen when viewing White websites, but it's nothing major. For me, The light bleed is really only noticable on the boot animation, and not during normal use.. Still it's quite a concerning design flaw..

Yes it is concernig
For some people its ok, it doesnt bother them. But not for me..
Too bad, because other than that, this is an excellent tablet!! Probably the best out there.
I thought the Z tab was one of the few tablets that seemed less prone to backlight bleeding complaints. I had a 16gb which I returned for a 32 version and both were absolutely perfect with the displays. I can't say the same about any transformer pad I have tried/owned.

Try to update your tablet with the latest software.. I experienced that before but after updating it worked fine.
