No Mobile Data on AT&T - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this problem for a while now but it's starting to get extremely annoying. If I'm not connected to WiFi I will have no mobile data at all. I can still send texts or make a phone call but I can't go on the internet or receive MMS. I've tried at least 5 different APN settings and I've made sure that "Data Enabled" is checked but nothing works. When I contacted AT&T they said there is nothing they can do because it is not an AT&T device.

Maybe you should try again, but this time tell them you'll drop them like a hot potato if they don't give you the correct APN settings. They're doing false advertising by telling you just because it's not their device that they cannot help you. Oh really jerks? I'd ask them why the f you pay full price like everyone else then. Try playing rough, maybe you'll get a response. I'd answer you but I don't know AT&T's settings. I use T-Mobile.
After some research, it may be a problem on their end. They may have you set up for a non-smartphone data plan or HSPA or LTE, not HSPA+ data. Look at your statement and see what plan you're on. You can always call them and make sure you're set up with HSPA+. Tell them to die in a ditch if they refuse to service a paying customer. I'm having a similar issue that seems to have started around 4-5 days ago. I'm in the Twin Cities area, btw, if that matters.
Prior to that, I was only the victim of the occasional data drop or ARP offload delayed-notification issue.
The problem usually, but not aways, occurs when I leave a WIFI area and get handed off to the cell towers. I get no data, but calls/SMS works fine. Anywhere from 5-15 minutes later, I will get mobile data again, but only briefly before it goes away again.
The issue can also occur when seemingly changing towers, or going from HSPA > HSPA+.
On occasion, when the problem is occuring, my cell bars will still show blue as google services don't know they've been disconnected, but when I attempt to access, for instance, gmail or GNow, I will get no connection. Finally the bars will turn grey as the phone attempts to (apparently) cycle the radio.
Oddly, I stopped into a retail store here locally and the gal said they were having data issues so I figured it'd be fixed. That was 5 days ago. 3 days ago I called customer care and logged a case. They've found no issues with their towers or my provisioning thus far.
I also switched out my SIM card. No change.
At this point I think I'm going to walk over to T-Mobile and try a prepaid SIM to see if it's the phone or really and truly something with AT&T's network.
I'll post a logcat here if anyone is interested but I couldn't find too much interesting within it.

I've been on the T-Mobile network now for about an hour and I have had ZERO of the aforementioned issues. The phone definitely handles leaving WIFI > HSPA better as well.

Forcing G1 to Roam

I'm going camping this coming weekend to a place in the mountains that tmobile has very poor coverage in. I was there last month and discovered my friends at&t phone had full service while my g1 showed service, just didn't show any bars and other times only showed one bar. Calls with my phone were flacky and dropped out, his worked perfectly. Is there a way to make my phone switch to roaming on at&t?
I have a national plan on T-Mobile.
I'm running Cyanogen 3.9.5
Thanks!

Should do it automatically. I saw my phone do this the other weekend when I was travelin. My phone showed ATT, Corr Wireless, and some other service and certain points.
The tmobile signal is just strong enough to keep it from roaming there. I was hoping it would switch automatically but it never did. I know the phone does have roaming ability, i've seen it switch to roam and work fine.
I would assume then just change your APN settings.
you can try manual operator selection, by going Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Network Settings > Network Operators > Search Networks then select whatever network you want to use
Hi.. I'm using CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 on my HTC Dream and I've got the same issues with roaming. I've travelled to 3 countries last month and I had issues with connecting to GSM network.. There was error message that my sim card cannot work with specific networks.. I've tried to use auto connection and I've tried also to connect manually to specific networks, but with the same result. I've tried also rebooting and removing the battery... Problem disappeared after few hours... I had this issue in Austria, Hungary and Turkey so it's not operator/country specific. Problems doesn't exist on different cell phone (Nokia). Everything works fine after powering on the phone.

[Q] cant connect to internet but has 3g signal

I just picked up a Vibrant today from craigslist (sold my HD2 a couple of hours before ) and internet was working fine for a few hours. I went to the marketplace and downloaded about 30-40 apps then i went to try some of them out and i would get error messages saying i dont have internet but at the top bar there is a 3G symbol. I tried doing a battery pull 3 times to see if that would help but nothing. I even tried switching to only 2G but that didnt help either. Any tips? Im thinking of doing a hard reset just to reset everything incase something odd happened but id rather not because i already started setting up the phone how i like it.
I'm guessing it's because you need to switch your internet data plan to the Android plan, assuming you are on T-Mobile. If you had anything else it would likely work for a few and then stop.
Try go to a different location. I was having problems with 3G at work, would only show uplink but no downlink on my mytouch. Called t-mobile up and opened a trouble ticket and it was fixed today. 3G worked everywhere else but where my work is.
This is likely due to a problem with T-Mobile's data network tonight. For the last few hours data (EDGE and 3G) has not worked not only in my area, but around the entire United States (NY, Vegas, Illinois, Florida, etc).
People have been tweeting about it all night so far: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=tmobile
Some of the latest tweets as of this posts have a few people saying 3G is working for them but no EDGE. If true at all. This is not the case for me, still down here.

Log on to your tmobile account online and see your device, might need to be switched to vibrant from hd2 and you should then get android data instead of what you had with hd2
im retarded i had to call tmo CS and have them switch me to an android plan.

[Q] Could Fast Dormancy be causing the data drop while on calls (AT&T)

There's been a lot of talk on XDA recently about fast dormancy on the Galaxy series and yesterday on the LG Optimus G. Apparently AT&T loves using FD on their network and it's causing many users issues from battery to reconnect issues on data.
There are a couple of threads on here particularly detailing a scenario whereby AT&T users will start on a phone call with their data connection active. After a small period of time (usually around 1 minute), the data connection will drop and will not reconnect (forced onto 2G) until you end the phone call. Users are able to fix this by going into *#*#4636#*#* and selecting WCDMA only.
My question is could it be possible that our devices have FD on by default and after a period of data inactivity (phone call) the phone is using FD to drop down to the lower level of cell service?
If so, how can we fix this?
Sorry to necro this thread, but I just went through a week of new (new as in not the normal Qualcomm WIFI data drop issue) data connectivity issues, on AT&T, here in the Twin Cities. I would not have data after being idle, after leaving WIFI, or after what I assume is a tower switch -- for about 5-10 minutes, then I'd get data for a little bit, then as soon as I idled I'd be back in bollocks. After trying EVERYTHING including getting my account reprovisioned, a new SIM, every ROM/kernel/baseband, etc., I walked into a T-Mobile and picked up a prepaid SIM. Everything works great.
What I noticed is when data is idle on AT&T you get HSPA:10 while on TMobile you get UMTS:3. When active on either network you get HSPA+:15.
Since, for me, the issue has gotten worse of the last week, I've concluded that AT&T changed something having to do with fast dormancy and it really messes with the N4. I did see similar symptoms on my iPhone 4, but they weren't quite as debilitating as on the N4.
Anyway, this is my long-winded reply of saying I agree with your original assessment of the problem, although you're referring specifically to a different symptom than I am (to the drop while on a call vs drop after idle).

I'm not on AT&T, but have the exact same symptoms. After having searched for a while and tried whatever I could (different radios, disabling hspap in the build.prop, enabling LTE, etc.), I concur with the conclusion that certain providers' Fast Dormancy settings don't work with the N4.
So has anyone got a fix? Disabling FD or even disabling HSPAP?

Can't Get International Data (On VZW)

Took my first international trip since getting the 6P. I called to add international services. In the Bahamas, I can get voice, but no data.
I spent a hour hour on the phone with VZW, but they were unable to assist. Took the SIM out, rebooted, checked a dozen settings - nothing.
This is the first negative experience I've had with the phone.
Anyone else have experience with this, or have any thoughts/ideas?
I have had a similar problem anytime I am away from my home network. Two observations from me: (1) the phone does not give any indication on whether it's connected to a data network or not when roaming (all you see is the "R" symbol in the signal strength meter whether you have data or not) and (2) most of the time it doesn't connect automatically- if you toggle data roaming or airplane mode, it connects to data, but this disappears when handing off to the next tower.
This is clearly a bug- if I move my SIM from the 6P to my iPhone 6, i get continuous roaming data, so it's nothing to do with the provider. I wish there was a fix as it's a pain in the b**t.
Not very helpful I know, but you're not alone with this issue

Rakuten Mobile (AU) in Japan

Rakuten Mobile (partner: AU mobile) in Japan is an MVNO that has a new UN-LIMIT plan.
There are many phones incompatible with their network (and partner network) and I'd like to understand why.
For example the Oneplus 5 supports all their+partner frequencies but it still can't grab the network (2G/3G and 4G).
There is a trick using a hidden setting in Android which is "LTE only". In that case, we can connect to the Internet.
1. We can't receive calls and can't call if the 4G isn't available because it happens via their "Rakuten Link" app (kinda VOIP).
2. The quality is awful, I receive a new complain of "echo" in the voice at each call.
Could you help me to understand what's the technological reason behind that?
If it isn't the frequencies, what can it be? I've searched everywhere, they never say the reason behind that incompatibility.
Thanks!
Dunno if you're still watching this thread but here's been my experience with Rakuten Mobile:
I have a rooted OP5T. Didn't work out of the box even after putting in the APN settings.
Did some digging around on Japanese blogs and enabling VoLTE does get me connected to the network. You can make calls over the network or use their Link app to use wifi/data instead. Both worked fine in the limited testing I've done. Data was also fine and pretty quick. This worked well for at least a few months.
However, some months later, the fixes and patches I have applied to get VoLTE enabled on my phone doesn't seem to stick or something is resetting it. If I stay home, my connection will stay on indefinitely, however if I go outside, after a few minutes my signal will drop and stay off until I reflash the fixes, or now it seems to reconnect if I reboot the phone. I am starting to think switching cell towers might be doing something? I have more testing to do.
