[Q] about CF-auto-root and stock rom - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So if I do a CF-AUTO-ROOT (by ChainFire) my device status will be "CUSTOM".
If I flash back a stock Rom ... will the status return to "OFFICIAL" or "NORMAL"
Sorry if it been asked before... didn't really find it by searching ...
Thanks in advance ...

Would also like to know this for warranty purposes

I believe that's the job of TriangleAway, I'm sure chainfire will work on that in the next couple of weeks.
:good:

Yes, as with the other old Galaxy's the Root can be taken away, and therefore leave the mobile "Official", but this is not yet done, as akrontomaz has said, in a couple of days the TriangleAway system will also be enabled for the Galaxy S4. Or you can always flash a Original Rom from Samsung and wipe everything, restoring the mobile as official, but in this case you would need to reboot the number of flashes from the Recovery, (Other thing that would be certainly in a couple of weeks).

[Announcement] Mobile odin fix coming

There is great news by CF
Mobile ODIN v3.50 will be released probably later today or tomorrow, and it will fix the flashcounter. In other words, for the international SGS3 (including LTE version), Note2 (all versions, even US carrier) and Note10.1 (all versions), using Mobile ODIN will keep your flashcounter at 0.
so anybody want to update ROM without raising counter hassle free, just stay tuned.
Will this also enable flashing of ota on note2??

There was no comments made on OTA by CF, let's wait for full change log.
That's good news. I hope CF can also update Triangle Away to change status from "Custom"/"Modified"...

+1
it really annoys me to see system status as custom
i got to be official once with TWRP but don't know how
i am currently on Omega V5.0 if a new rom is released i going to try to make it official and share the results if they are worth it
The latest Triangle Away version does a much better job of resetting that value (in the bootloader, not under Settings) than the older versions, but you still need to be running a stock firmware for it to work !
So you need to flash back to a full stock firmware, root, make sure you are again running a stock kernel/recovery (so the counter doesn't auto-trip to 1 at boot), then run Triangle Away. Confirm everything is set to 0 and official, THEN flash back custom firmware.
The "system status" thing is set by a program inside stock Samsung firmware. It will not be triggered on for example a CM-based ROM (assuming it was set to official when you flashed said CM-based ROM)
All my devices have "Official" status - so yes, it is certainly possible.
As for OTA, the binary blob OTAs I have done no work on at all, only ZIP OTAs are supported. Or just wait for the full firmware to get out and flash that... hell it's usually available before the OTA gets officially released - and for those four or so OTAs you'll get during the entire device's lifetime, I wonder why people care about them so much ... and if you do really care about them, then just don't run root/custom ... easy really.
^ Thank you very much for the TA update. Yes, indeed, it worked like a charm. Though the settings still shows "Modified" i know in time you can crack it.
BTW, i paid all of your apps that i have.

I have some bad news though ... the flash counter fix breaks exFAT support. So you can no longer use SD cards formatted as exFAT to flash firmwares from. You'll have to use a FAT32 card - or use the internal flash memory to store your firmwares.
I am not happy about this, but as exFAT is a closed system, there's not really anything I can do. I can maybe fix it by making the Mobile ODIN process a *lot* more complicated, but I think that may create as many problems as it solves.

Should I update or not

I am worried that the samsung knox will ruin my device. So should I update or not. What if I got bored of touchwiz and wanted to flash a new rom
Does updating mean I will lose the ability to root and flash forever?
If you search the forum you will see someone already posted a rom with the knox striped. Wait a bit longer and I am sure more versions will be coming.

as far as i did understand that, it is a question of the new bootloader, where a knox flag shows your flashing orgies, which cannot be resetted at the time (no triangle away can help us so far)...so if you try to get away from the original firmware, you raise the counter and void your warranty...well, if you had one
anyway, if you have no warranty, you can show your backside to knox. nothing will happen, but a flash counter shows what you were doing...
please be careful, of course you can brick your phone with flashing, as always, but this will not have anything to do with knox!
EDIT: the only thing is, there is no possibility to downgrade the bootloader by now! so, you cannot simply go back to 4.1! but you can of course flash 4.3 custom roms...
I still don't get why Samsung has this Knox thing. As far as I know, here in the EU, rooting and flashing ROMs does not void the warranty unless it is proven that the malfunction came from the owner messing with the software. So, having Knox raising a counter or flag the device or whatever, is pretty useless, at least here in the EU. We already have the flash counter. The only advantage may be that with Knox, there is no way to conceal the precious flashes and that we can claim the warranty when we DID messed up the phone somehow, because if we didn't, the warranty is still active.

Not sure about n2 but with n3 physical damage, in the form of a broken efuse, is actually the result of tripping knox. So even under eu regulations, the warranty is void once knox is tripped.

What a cheap trick they made. Since modifying software does not void warranty, they make a little piece of hardware get damaged so the warranty gets void even though that the so called e-fuse is non-essential (I think) for the smartphone correct functioning . Wow, that is even worst that what I was thinking. Samsung really messed up this time, what's the point of having an Android then? So, after all, we people from the EU, can't get away with our flashes and customizations...
Thanks for the info, btw.
Stick to 4.1.2 and enjoy mindless flashing of custom roms.

Knox has been deleted at the DN3 Rom.
Anyways AFAIK you flash DN3 Rom from Stock 4.1.2 the Bootloader will be still the old one and you have to use the wifi fix.

yeah agree totally on this,. they make sure you only have 1 way go to up in version of rom without able to go back down to older rom by locking it with knox,. it is very cheap method samsung is using this time, kind of what's else is the point of not able to flashing all fancy custom rom ?
Ditto Note 3 is awesome. They just released v3 and works great. I was on 4.1.2 for the longest time then updated to 4.3 official release but Knox was so annoying I have decided to go for custom rom and I am very happy so far.

1. Yes Flashback should be possible.
2+3. In any case do a backup of your imei, there are various possibilties but you need root.
After several days of sheer frustration with 4.3 constantly rebooting, freezing my phone, causing the "black screen of death", numerous force closes, broken apps and producing many permission related errors which can be seen in logcat, I downgraded to 4.1.2 this morning and haven't had a single issue in 12 hours. I have no good reason to ever change my firmware from 4.1.2. It's solid as a rock and trouble-free. Maybe if stability improves on 4.3, I may try it out again in six months.

I am not eager to flash, but because I have a gear now, I updated to open Asia mj5 4.3.
Rock solid until now, gear works 100%.
The only worry I have is future updates, because mj5 is a "leak".
But, mj5 is stable for me, although it seems a bit slower at times as the 4.1.2
Never rooted, standard all the way.

Guys, I don't think KNOX e-fuse is there to void the warranty or for Samsung to know if you flashed your device or not. KNOX e-fuse is there so that you know if the phone has been messed up with if you actualy use KNOX. This is for the COMPANIES that need enhanced security etc. And for this security there must be a way to tell if the device has been messed with. For most people that don't use company phone (and for majority of those who do) KNOX is not interesting because they don't need it. But I understand why banks and other institutions that demand security would need it.
So it is no cheap trick by Samsung to get to void ordinary user's warranty, it is a security measure which only some companies will use.

[Q] Bricked AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4

Hello all, if anyone could please help me, I would be extremely grateful.
I updated my Cyanogenmod nightly to the release for December 8th, 2013. The download seemed to be fine, it rebooted into the twrp, and then it rebooted, but then my phone never loaded back up. I tried restarting my phone with the power button, and eventually resulted to the battery pull, but yet my phone still wouldn't load.
I then tried going into the twrp again, and tried to flash a nightly upload that I had used from December 4th, it seemed to of loaded, but again my phone never loaded up.
I tired all day to use Odin to flash the ATT stock firmware, but I kept getting an ODIN FAILED error. I tried several different firmware downloads for ATT, and again, still no luck.
I am really upset over this, and would love to know why the update didn't work, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, how do I fix my device???
Samsung experience shop
Go to a Best buy with a local Samsung Experience center. They can flash the Latest 4.3 software on it from your carrier as long as it turns on and gets to download mode. I did the same thing to mine a month or so back and it saved my phone haha. Its a cool tool they have that i wish i could some how pirate haha

I was actually able to unbrick my phone using the Kies app for Mac. I don't know why I didn't try this earlier. I suppose I was trying to hold onto my root, and ability to flash custom roms onto my phone. Less than 24 hours of stock firmware, and I'm already annoyed. I also ran an update from At&T, and now I'm on 4.3. I'm still a n00b when it comes to the rooting and flashing. Yes, I can manage to follow and read directions to get my phone loaded with custom roms. But here's where I'm at now....
I'm running an unrooted AT&T Galaxy S4 with 4.3. I want Cyanogenmod back, and I want it now!!!
What do I do next????

you can root it, but that will trip the knox counter to 0x1,
id suggest going into download mode to see if you've tripped the knox counter to 0x1, if not and you want no warranty go to the original dev thread and look for ways on rooting there
if your wanting warrenty, your pretty much hooped then bud...

Unfortunately at this point, you have root through vroot or kingo and that is all I can say. You cannot install a custom recovery, so no cyanogen

[Q] Should I root? Considering...

Hey!
So yeah Iv'e been root-phobic ever since I bricked my old Ace Plus back in the day, and Iv'e been satisfied with non-root for a while.
But now the advantages of root are tempting me to go back. Iv'e always hated the fact that you can't disable the camera sound and the bloatware takes necessary space, and let's not forget all the apps that have special root features.
The thing is I'm ready to root again but then I realized rooting would change my phones status to "modified," and I won't be able to update my firmware. And that's a no-no since I'm expecting to ( hopefully ) get 4.3 soon.
So my question is: If I root, remove all the c**p I want to ( camera sound, bloatware ), and then unroot, will my phone status still be modified or will the unoot send it back to normal, so I can update? I hope it does! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks!
I think once you root your phone it will stay modified forever, but still, having a rooted S3 is so much better, i have 4.4.1 with CM and its something that I think will never come to our S3, so..
I rooted mine two weeks before I bought it, ****ed it up and fixed it many times...
The choice is yours to make
Yes you can go back to official status even after rooting and flashing custom roms multiple times.
This can be done by resetting the flash counter via Triangle Away and flashing a stock Rom.
Check your Build version and CSC now by dialing *#1234#
Better yet download from Samfirmware your current firmware in case you want to go back to it later.
Also you may want to look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42568033
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33817354
Also it's a good practice to backup your EFS, if you're still on efs v1, and keep it in a safe place like your ext sd card or your PC before flashing another Rom or firmware.

[Q] Xnote gps problems

Ok I have looked everywhere and tried many fixes including the AT&T fix (put me into a bootloop) and clean flashes... but nothing is working.
Here are all the steps that i have done.
I have a Bell note 3 that was rooted on JB. I sent it into repair after unrooting (it still said custom but i guess they overlooked that). When i got it back it was running KK official.
I rooted with autoroot and flashed X-note with Civz kernel and the wifi/nfc fix.
Now everything is running great and i still have knox 0x0 (which is good)
EXCEPT my GPS is not connecting. I am using GPS status and it will show that there are satellites to connect to and will take a really long time to connect, then it will drop everything and say that there are no sats to connect to...
I need my GPS and am willing to sponsor a beer+ for a working solution...
And is there anyone out there that has seen the same issue?
Thanks in advance

Try replacing the GPS config with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=by.zatta.agps
It worked for me and I'm also using a Bell N800W8. My GPS behaved perfectly while on stock, stock rooted (with custom recovery) and at a point after flashing several roms it broke. Now it requires this app to work. I've also gone back to stock (knox 0x0) and couldn't get a lock.
Obviously it's a software issue I'm just unsure why flashing the stock firmware didn't fix it and a fix is required.
Good luck!

No offence taken
I posted there twice and it got buried within the hour and never got ansered...
Im a volunteer EMT and i rely on my GPS to get to emergencies, i needed a resolution ASAP.
I ended up just flashing vision-x n900w and now the first GPS fix after a reset can take up to a min (but it gets a fix which is an improvement)
But subsequent fixes take only a couple of seconds.... so i guess i have to live with that...
Thanks for the help (and i'm usually good with forums but i had to make an exception this time)
I have the same problem not running xnote or with at&t. I was rooted with xposed. Have tried restoring stock with odin but still doesn't work. I can run a AOSP rom and it works fine so not thinking its a hardware issue. I will start a new thread as this isn't specific to xnote.
