[Q] Hardware ID missing? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I cannot connect to Kies or root, it just hangs on the "daemon started successfully" step. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times. Any ideas?

Did you go to the "about" in the setting and tap build number over and over to unlock developer's options and than turn on usb debug?

Same thing happened to me. Here's how I fixed it. I uninstalled the drivers from my computer, rebooted, did a factory reset on my S4, installed S4 drivers on PC, and plugged in my S4.

I have the same problem. Only, mine used to work fine until I rooted. Ever since root, I get the "Hardware ID missing" error when I connect to my computer.
Details:
I have AT&T S4.
OTA Update applied before root.
Rooted and Custom Icon removed according to steps 1 and 2 HERE
I've tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers
With USB Debugging Checked and UnChecked
I have not tried the factory reset because I really loath setting my phone back up again.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the motochopper instructions saying to perform the root before ever connecting to your computer.... unfortunately, I had already connected to my computer before reading the instructions.
Any suggestions to get a USB Mass storage or USB as Camera connection back would be greatly appreciated.

Grab the app USBdeview and delete any previous drivers that are still associated with your phone. That should work if the problem is on the pc side.

I registered onto this forum just to say this WWOOOOORRKS!! I got this problem from a failed root. It kept saying "Hardware ID missing" and wouldn't allow me to access the SD Card anymore.
What I did specifically:
1) Download and start USBdeview. (unable to post links since I'm a new user)
2) Plugged in my Samsung Galaxy S4.
3) USBdview will highlight all S4-related drivers with the color green. Please right-click "Uninstall Selected Devices". (if you have a USB mouse connected, obviously don't delete that, but EVEN if you do, just unplug and replug to reinstall)
4) Unplug Samsung Galaxy S4.
5) Install Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones. (unable to post links since I'm a new user)
6) Plug in Samsung Galaxy S4 and wait for new drivers to install.
And after that, it worked for me. Hopefully you have the same luck.

For those who can't connect with Kies

After half an hour trying I have just found a working solution how to connect your SGS in Kies. Here is the deal:
Start Kies, put phone's USB settings in Kies mode. Connect your phone to the PC. Wait until MTP App show "Connected". Go to your PC's Device manager, find Portable Devices and select Disable on GT-I9000. Do not wait for the disabling process to be completed, just disconnect the USB cable. Now connect the USB cable again, wait the MTP App on the phone to show you the message "Connected" and choose Enable on GT-I9000 in Device Manager. After a few seconds your phone should be ready in Kies
I tried this both on x86 and x64 Windows 7 and it works for me.
I hope this will help! And I hope there isn't another thread with this solution. If there is - I'm sorry
i cant wait to get home and try this... another 10h to go

Will put this in the FAQ if we have some confirmations for its effectiveness
when i first bought my phone it worked with kies, but after flashing it to a different firmware there was nothing i could do to get it to connect. i had deleted drivers, re-installed, etc etc but nothing worked. what ended up working was putting the phone in download mode, plugging in the usb to both phone and pc, then putting the phone into recovery mode, and as soon as the recovery menu popped up my device was recognized and the correct drivers were reinstalled and all was fine again

If you still have this problem, please try my method and tell me if it works
I had issues and I also tried this method. But it didn't help
Last thing I tried was to format the internal SD. That did the trick for me....
The biggest problem with getting the phone to connect to Kies is two fold:
1) MTP application will ONLY launch from the home screen (touchwiz screen). NOT from any app. drawer / launcher screen
2) If USB mode on the phone is set to Ask on Connection, MTP won't launch due to the USB app. being open (see 1) above)
If you set USB to Kies mode and then ensure you are on the home screen of the phone with nothing else running, Kies WILL connect
Also remember the 16+ size extension bug.
So a full wipe on ur I internal sd card is a good solution just make sure u back it up tour hdd
I also did a "Driver recovery" from Kies and it worked after that. Although MTP driver failed to install for me in this case.
Make sure to update to the latest version of Kies ( Now 1.5.1.0074.45 ) as this version seems far more reliable when connecting the phone
I recently discovered that the culprit of Kies continuously trying to connect to phone was caused by wrong MTP driver selected.
Under WinXP
After phone connected in Kies Mode..Go to Device Manager/Portable device..
If you see a device labeled as "MTP xxx or Portable device.." ,wrong MTP driver or older driver has been used..For my case, a Microsoft 2004 MTP driver was selected.
To fix it.
1) Do a manual driver update..for my case ,i let the driver wizard to search automatically..this round, another newer Microsoft driver was found..in fact 2 of them.. after installing the drivers(Microsoft 2006 MTP driver,2 are listed..). .Now Device Manager/Portable device listed "GT-i9000" ,Kies immediately found my phone.
Driver name that worked are "wpdusb.sys" and "wudfrd.sys" found under \windows\System32\drivers\..

Probable Fix for Kies
Friends,
I have also faced the same problem (while connecting my SGS via Kies MTP was crashing). It used to work earlier so I started to remove Applications and data in the reverse order of Installation. After I removed "Dolphin Browser HD" and all saved bookmarks it started working.
This may be a probable solution if you also have Installed Dolphin Browser.

MTP crashing on phone is independent from Kies on PC cant detect phone.
i couldnt use kies either but i wasnt worried as i hardly have free time now..

You might be interested in my little APK (SGS Toolbox). I first created it to have it read the product code from the nv_data file to allow you to check whether it has been modified after a firmware update. But now I added some extra options, of which one is the option to check whether there are new firmware updates available in KIES by issuing the same request KIES does when checking for new firmware. This way you don't have to connect your phone to your computer all the time to check for new updates in KIES. Note: It sends JM1 as the current firmware version to find the latest. I might send the actual phone's firmware version once I figured out how to find it. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778244
Thanks, I'll give it a try

Continuous force close and also corrupted zip

Hello Everyone I felt my previous explanation of the problem I am facing may not have been a good one so I am going to try explaining my problem again. I am currently experiencing several problems. I have a samsung Fascinate. When the phone was working fine I rooted it and all was still fine. I then installed clockworkmod(rom manager). I tried installing several roms by downloading them to to rom manager then selecting the one I want then rebooting the phone. But everytime I tried installing a rom by selecting apply update.zip from sdcard E:signature to verifly whole-file signature, E:signature verification failed, installation aborted. After reading through some of the links in xda developers forums I realized I need Odin. Once I installed Odin it never recognized my fascinate in the ID com column with in Odin. I made sure the phone was mounted by selecting mount from top drop down menu from fascinate. At the same time I notice that in Windows XP it would say USB not recognized although Fascinate would show up as a mass storage when checking under explorer and see a F: drive for the phone. Iam able to see the files in the phone and transfer if necessary. I then tried getting a new update.zip and rebooting to menu where u select apply sdcard update.zip same error of invalid signature. then tried cwmrecovery and rebooting ..no luck either. Then I found a link containing a file named stock.zip...but no luck either. So I decided to wipe and reset to start all over and when I did that and the phone started and I unlocked the screen I began getting endless forceclose. This is where I am now. Does anyone have any suggestions.
You need to download the Samsung drivers first. Then proceed to use Odin.

Download mode is easy:
Step 1. Power up your phone (while phone is off, press power and release), then
Step 2. Immediately hold volume down until you see the yellow Android warning sign.
I downloaded the usb drivers for mobile but ti still didn't wok. What else do you think it might. When I connect the phone to computer (windows XP) on the lower right it says USB device not recognized.
Are you pointing the device driver installation to the path where the drivers are? And did you download the drivers for your correct cpu 32 or 64 bit?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I forgot to mentioned that I have installed the samsung usb drivers two times. still no luck. I even read that if you unplugged the usb and then shoutdown windows xp and physically disconnect power and wait about a minute or two sometimes this would help xp recognize usb port. I also tried disabling and enabling the port via manage in my computer on xp while the fascinate was connected and also tried it disabling and enabling while phone was not connected no luck eitherway. Any other suggestions. Thanks inadvance for everyones suggestions.
the drivers I downloaded are 32 bit. how do I point the drivers as you have mentioned. I also tried downloading android sdk tools and tried to figure out how to push the files top the phone but when I typed adb device under listing devices it does not show the phone or anything for that matter. I am confused now as to what may be the original problem and how to tackle the problem should I work on USB problem first then force close then update.zip any suggesstions.
You need to go to device manager, find the phone under the section that talks about not recognized usb's, right click on it then go to properties, then you need to manually select the drivers you downloaded..

N4 not showing up at all on PC

I'm not sure when this problem first appeared. For whatever reason, my phone doesn't show up at all when connected to either of my two PCs. It must have when I first rooted the phone (to load ChainSU) but I'm not sure if the problem is recent or occurred immediately thereafter.
USB debugging is disabled. When I plug my phone into a computer, it attempts to install the MTP Driver and fails. When I uninstall my device, it disappears and I'm unable to manually install the driver's I've downloaded from other threads. When I load into the Bootloader, my device is recognized by Fastboot.
I'm hesitant to factory reset as this will leave me unable to root if the problem persists, which is important to me as I can get rid of the yellow tint on this screen.
Any thoughts?
Edit: $10 via Paypal for anyone who successfully helps me to a solution!
Are you definitely sure usb debugging is disabled? The phone should install as a portable device on your pc. Also ensure to enter your password onto your phone when connected otherwise the phone will not show up its contents.
Make sure for windows media player to be updated to the latest, for the windows mtp driver.

There are a few things you can try. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely then reinstalling from the toolkit? In the past, I've had issues where the phone wouldn't be accessible in some way on one computer but would be fine on another, so maybe try a different computer to try to narrow down the problem as to whether it's an issue with the phone or the computer? Also, this may sound a bit ridiculous, but simply switching USB cables and / or ports has fixed detection issues for me in the past as well--something to consider.

Remove any existing drivers (while phone is connected), do the same for other android devices if you have any, then reboot and install Universal Naked Drivers. Have always had success with this driver pack.

100% sure on both counts.
I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.
I've had this issue before, my Nexus/Computer was acting in complete stupidity. When connecting the phone to your computer you will see a notification saying "Connected as a media device" on your phone, just touch it, and change it to "Camera (PTP)". It might access the camera for you, but It actually accessed the storage for me.

I'm thinking we've screwed something up with the phone's side of the MTP protocol - mine is totally independent of the cord/computer used. All the correct drivers installed.
Have you tried Factory Resetting? I'm really hoping this is a workable option.

I had same problem on my pc yesterday. Even if the drivers installer showed up that installation was successful, somehow for a mtp mode system was using some other Microsoft driver. Correct one was only used in ptp mode. So when I connected n4 in mtp mode storage wasn't available, when I switched to ptp mode everything was fine. Turn on your usb debug, switch on mtp and connect. Go to device manager in system, find your nexus there and rmb on it and manually reinstall driver. After this my n4 is visible in system in mtp mode again.

The problem is that even if I switch between MTP and PTP it still does nothing, I have tried multiple cables, computers and have reflashed the ROM and wiped the device but it still does not connect with the PC. This is frustrating.

Is yours able to connect during Bootloader/Recovery? Fastboot/ADB have no trouble recognizing my device.
It's really odd that if these things work, meaning your USB connection is fine, replacing the all of software fixed nothing... unless MTP occurs at a much lower level of the OS (maybe kernel is corrupted?)
I've got a similar problem that others have posted - PCs not detecting my N4. I got it last Friday (2/1) from Google and after the registering process and updating to 4.2.1, I connected it to my Win7 laptop and it showed on the PC as a drive. But since I couldn't copy/paste Office docs to that drive and had to do that through Dropbox, I didn't bother trying to reconnect until Monday, at which time the PC didn't detect it. Neither will one other Win7 nor two XP (both with WMP10) PCs. Have tried multiple cables, all of which work with other Android devices (pre 3.0). I've seen several suggestions on this and other threads, but one major issue I'm having is that some of the fixes require enabling USB Debugging. For the life of me I can't find that option in the N4's Settings. Unlike my other phones, there is no Applications subcategory under Settings on my N4 (4.2.1, Build JOP40D). Can anyone help me find that option? TIA.
Edit - Found answer. Click on Build in About Phone setting 7 times. That activated Developer options. Now to try the fixes which require USB Debugging mode turned on.

PC no longer recognizes Nexus 4: USB driver failure

Problem: USB driver failure for Nexus 4. The android composite USB driver loads. Portable device driver (MTP) does not.
I have the latest v7 Google USB drivers in the extras 4.2.2 SDK folder, and pointing the driver install to this folder has worked in the past. Now, I never get the portable device MTP to install. I have both windows 7 and windows 8 machines that used to recognize the phone. I suspect my phone USB firmware is corrupted ( or something else software related?), but don't know how to find or make a zip file I can flash via custom recovery to test my theory.
I've tried multiple USB cables, all which have worked in the past. Simultaneously, I can only charge at USB rate. This all started occurring a week ago.
Any recommendations?

User failure in this case, install these drivers from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650. Delete all excisting usb drivers and then reconnect to usb and prevent/stop windows from installing drivers. Open device manager in windows and select the N4 and install the 0.72 drivers and you`re done.

I'm having the same problem, ADB, MTP none of it works, I've tried every method including yours. Worst part of it is that nothing happens in the device manager when i plug in Nexus 4 so i can't update drivers manually too. It was the same with my phone. Wasn't detected on other computers too.
Here's what led to the problem resolution (kinda):
1. Formatted /system, /data, /cache, and flashed CM 10.1.2: http://get.cm/get/jenkins/34261/cm-10.1.2-mako.zip
2. Restarted the phone, then I came upon this forum post which mentioned that Trickster MOD Kernel Settings should be used to test for fast charge.
3. To install Trickster Mod I had to have Play Store (and thus the GApps package), so I rebooted into recovery.
4. After flashing the GApps package and rebooting the phone got detected and I was back in business.
5. Immediately flashed the factory image JDQ39 (it was the one I had available at the time.
6. Received the 4.3 OTA update about an hour ago and the phone is again back to not functioning on USB.
(Worth mentioning here that before this fiasco started, I was on CM 10.1.2, linked above.)
-- Update --
Rebooted a few times, phone appears on USB now and is there consistently, I'm beginning to think this is a hardware issue but I cannot apply for a warranty claim until the problem is consistent enough.
I've been having the same problem the last few weeks. I am on v4.3 stock. The phone is not being detected in any computer i've tried. I've used several USB cords and none of them work. The phone can be charged, but only in USB mode, so charging is slow, even when using AC charger.
I think this problem was triggered by charging on a cheap car charger. The Nexus 7 also can get into this state from what i've been reading.
I haven't come across a fix yet, so I think I'm going to RMA it before the warranty runs out.. its to bad though, I think this is a software problem related to 4.3. I used a lot of cheap chargers without this problem coming up before upgrading to 4.3.

Tried that. I also replaced the USB flexible circuit card ($25 amazon) and nothing changed. I'm glad their are people like xDA member, enfrant, that provides zip files for updating the phone, else I'd be stuck with a non- updateable nexus 4, which would be a nightmare for a flash junkie.

Very basic step but I've seen it being missed before:
- Go to Settings
- Storage
- Menu > USB computer Connection
- Check Media Device(MTP)
If this was not checked, checking it will make your computer download the necessary drivers if not present already.

[Q] Computer not recognizing phone when in USB Debugging Mode

I am trying to install the ADB drivers but my phone is not appearing in the device manager at all for some reason. I have USB Debugging mode turned on but all that pops up when I plug my phone in is the auto play that asks me if I want to open the device to view files. I have no android device listed in my device manager to install drivers to. I have tried on two different computers and my phone is not recognized.
I have the google edition on 4.3
have you tried a different usb cable?

Uninstall and then reinstall Kies and try again bro, that should work bro.
Try a different cable. Had an issue was GNex where it charged fine, connected to the computer okay, but couldn't get adb or use odin. Spent hours trying to figure it out, uninstslling, reinstalling, and rebooting everything under the sun. Then thought maybe, just maybe it might be the cable. Swapped it out, and it worked like a charm.
