Samsung has already stated that the previous generation of TecTiles are not supported.
Sorry havent heard. Thanks

Tectiles don't equal NFC tags - they're just a name that Samsung use for THEIR NFC tags..
Samsung changed the NFC controller in the S4 to a Broadcom controller (whereas previously it was an NXP one), so are unable to read some NFC tags (MiFare classic/1k being one of them - which happen to be what the original Samsung Tectiles are).
Some places are saying that it affects all MiFare tags, but it's only the MiFare Classic/1k that's being named - So if you buy any tags, avoid anything with the word "MiFare" for now.
I have a heap of MiFare Classic tags (now useless), and some MiFare Ultralight which may or may not work. If you're desperate for stickers now, NTAG203 tags work (I just tried one to be sure), but they can only hold about 1/6 of the data that that the Classic could hold.
It was silly of Samsung to change it suddenly.
Are there NTAG203 tags that support more storage of data? More than 114 bytes? do the specifications allow it?
MiFare Ultralight work just fine (reading tags that have already been written, recognising unformatted tags, and formatting and writing tags).
So it looks like it's just the Classic/1k that are useless for us now.

@monotheist: I've read that the Broadcom controller is "better" (it's subjective I guess), but I agree that it's pretty crappy to make a switch rendering all of Samsung's existing (extremely overpriced considering the price you can get tags for elsewhere) NFC tags useless. I'd be royally PO'd if I'd shelled out for the Samsung ones thinking that I'd be better off as far as compatibility goes.
I don't believe that the specs for NTAG203 allow for any more data - although I'm far from an expert so could be wrong here. According to http://www.gototags.com/docs/display/NFC/NFC+Chip+Types (they sell tags, so take any information as a sales spiel) the Type IV tags hold huge amounts of data - they're also about $3-4 each. Expensive, but not too bad if you're only after a few. No idea whether they're readable by the S4, but on a forum elsewhere I saw someone recommending Type IV tags (the conversation was specific to the S4), so it's possible. Personally, until I see someone say that they've used specific tags successfully with the S4, I'll be wary of getting them
Personally, I use an app that uses the the tag ID, combined with a url to trigger the specific app (since so many apps try to pick up the tag when it's scanned now - and I don't like setting the default reader if I can avoid it.. Only uses a tiny amount of data, and all of the tasks (assuming triggering tasks is what you're after) is saved on the phone so can be as long as it needs to be without running into space issues.

Just used NXP TagInfo on a blank NTAG203 (type 2) tag. The amount of usable storage is exactly 137 bytes.

In the summary you mention that "...you can get a pack of NTAG203 NFC Tags, which are essentially what Tectile 2s are going to be, at a fraction of the price." Are the Tectiles 2 going to be NTAG203? I had assumed that they would be Type IV tags.. I've not used them, so I'm not certain how much data they need to store.

I think I should have used the word "probably" instead of "essentially", and I've updated my posting.
I've been trying to find out exactly what kind of tags the Tectile 2s are going to be but so far no luck yet.
Can you suggest nfc tags that are cheap for basic usage with the Galaxy S4?
ebay?
@Robogar: Ahhh.. No worries. Considering that some places have reported that some people purchasing the original Tectiles have actually gotten Tectiles 2 (even though they weren't packaged as such), I'd have thought that specifics would have been plastered all over the place.
---------- Post added at 12:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 PM ----------
@jastonas; There are loads of places online that sell tags in small quantities. Personally, I'd go for a dedicated shop versus ebay, but that's just me. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662367 for a list of places. Just make sure you don't get the MiFare Classic/1k ones
Edit: Just noticed that the post I linked to hadn't been updated for a while, so wont include any newer sources.
Found a tweet from someone who probably got the new batch of Tectiles.
https://twitter.com/BeauGiles/status/327216733335207938
Looks like they're going to be NFC Forum Type 4 tags so lots of storage space. I wonder if the pricing will be similar to the previous Tectiles?

Wait, are you saying that the S4 is incapable of supporting the larger tags? they max out at a certain size now?
Why on earth did they change this controller?
I also have 25$ worth of useless tags thanks to this change and I'm reluctant to order anymore unless I know they will CONTINUE to keep goddamned working

Ok so I guess my question above has now been answered.
So does anyone know if the chips on the tectile 2 models will be released unbranded and cheap as heck on ebay from sellers in asia? The NTAG203's can be quite cheap.
I would recommend either the NTAG203 or the Topaz 512. Either has compatibility with any NFC enabled device.
Main differences are NTAG203's have only 144 bytes of available storage but the Topaz 512 has 462 bytes of available storage. You can actually find the Topaz 512 cheaper at some places.
I wonder if it's a hardware or software limitation. Probably software imho.
I bought these and I get this message on my Samsung Mega...

Why change it? Just rendered 20 tags useless to me.
Is this going to be an ongoing thing with NFC technology? is this a once off change? Why the HELL are these things not backwards compatible (the chips, not the tags!)
Where can I find 1kb tags for the S4 at a reasonable price and what model # are they?
Ridiculous.
http://tagsfordroid.com/store/2-ntag203-bundle-with-free-nfc-keychain.html
Those NTAG from their website are all working
That's only a 144 byte tag though
That's still plenty of space. There are MILFARE nfc chips, but if you read the description are not working with S4, neither Nexus. I'm sure there are no alternatives yet.

apparently the old tags were not spec compliant and not supported by other NFC readers.
The old tags were proprietary and Samsung switched to non-proprietary standard tags.
Still raises the question of why they didn't use the standard tags in the first place
Anyone know where I can get good, cheap tags? 1kb? under 1.30$ US per tag?
I need about 10.

I picked up 10 on amazon for $8.49 NFCguize I believe are the brand
The only time you should need more than even a 100 bytes in my experience is if you are storing data on the tag. Such as encoding "Here is a three thousand character long string" on the tag, as opposed to using something like NFC Task Launcher for automata of things like Wi-Fi/Car Mode/whatever. In which case it's just a waste of money.

I dont believe these new tags have that kind of storage(and its not needed btw)...and i think they wont be changing the tech now..at least not in near future..now the chip is compatible with the nfc standards..that s why the change was made..

Another Samsung fail.
Every news outlet I saw (including SAMMobile) was reporting, all trough past last 2-3 weeks, that 4.3 is confirmed for S3 and listed ANT+ as one of the coming features.
Well it was a lie. Its not there (and will never be).
Samsung really has to get their PR/communications team together. When Note3 was released, they forgot to mention anywhere (spec sheet, news, reviews, stage intros) that it had ANT+ support. That was one end of the stick.
Now they jump to the other end by reporting that it will come to S3 with the 4.3 update, which turns out to be completely false.
Here is the SAMMobile report for example: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/11/04...olling-out-for-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-gt-i9300/
Extract:
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update now rolling out for Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300)
CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS IN ANDROID 4.3 UPDATE
- GALAXY GEAR Support
- TRIM Support (Makes the device much faster)
- ANT+ Support
- Core UI elements updated to the ones on the Galaxy S4 (Galaxy S4′s theme all over)
- New Samsung Keyboard
- GPU drivers have been updated (Higher GPU benchmark scores)
.

Edit: Please read post No.10 before you comment!. Also SAMMobile has today corrected their report, see post No.12

Please don't go into an argument about something you obviously don't understand. If you just cant hold back, then at least do some research.
Its not a bug. Its a missing feature. There is a big difference.
It is not something they can fix. It is something that will never be available (as in technological limitation in the hardware). Ergo its misinformation, plain and simple.
Edit: But they don't care. They keep reporting the same old BS today again: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/11/13/android-4-3-update-arrives-on-the-galaxy-s-iii-in-the-uk/
I just hate copy/paste news.
Not for every function must need an app. Screen mirroring is involved in this.
I think the point is just because it did not come out with the first release of the firmware does not mean it will not be supported in the future. When they get past 4.3 and never had any support for it, then you can say they are liars.

I am not saying don't comment, but please do a little background fact checking before do. Are ask question first, not make stupid statements.
Let me spell it out for you 'S3 WILL NEVER SUPPORT ANT+', no matter what firmware you put on it. Hence the news report is false or as I put it "IS A LIE".

You put "turned out to be a big fat lie" which implies you previously believe it to be true. When did this hardware limitation come in, what info did you learn and where did you learn it?
You don't mention anything in the OP about the hardware limitation, which if you have info on this would be the most important info related to your thread topic IMO.
Not trying to argue, but the thread is a little confusing. If you have the info it would be great for you to share. The only things that come up on google are questions about it and the press releases you are saying lie.

I am sorry. You are right about the "turned out part". To be perfectly honest, i did wish it to be true, however I knew it wasn't going to be. Practically wished the impossible.
I slightly wished that if all these news portals (especially SAMMobile, which has very close ties and inside sources with Samsung), they might know something that I don't.
About the limitation. You are right to ask for sources, but let me try to explain first as there is so much misconception about ANT+, as you can see, that its not so easy to explain. Not trying to hide links, just that (As you will find) the publicly available information is very very scarce, when you search for anything ANT+ hardware stuff.
Most people haven't even heard of the technology, hence all (I repeat) all the reviews you can find about Note3, ignored to mention this as a feature. They didn't forget IR, which is less useful in my opinion. Even Samsung itself, failed to mention it in any of there publications prior to the release of the phone. Owners only learnt about the support from finding ANT service updating on their phone when they turned it on.
Anyway back to why S3 wont support it... I will try not to be very technical.
ANT+ uses the same Bluetooth antenna that is available in the S3 (as with the S4 and Note3 where it actually is available) or most other current smartphone for that matter. However the antenna and software support are not enough for ANT to work.
Let me put it this way. If you have a b/g wifi router. It will not suddenly start to support wifi-n just because you rewrite the firmware and change the antenna. Or a better example might be a 10 year old Nokia (no matter what software you put on it) will not start to support Bluetooth 3.0, just because is had 1.0 on it.
The hardware limitation I talk of is in the SoC (Note: not the CPU). It needs to have ANT connectivity radio frequency IC with embedded ANT protocol stacks in the SoC.
Qualcomm is part of the ANT+ alliance, however not all their SoC have this feature 'onboard'. IT depends on which variant of snapdragon it is. I believe in their case it's called Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth (yes its called Bluetooth, even tough its where the ANT+ is supported). Its not even about how new the the phone is. Many Sony Xperia phone from 2011 had the right snapdragon chips that supported ANT+ (Sony Xperia Active is a good example).
Now to give a good example of why I am not posting link. Look at the below wiki of snapdragon chips. Go to the bottom for example (snapdragon 800 or 600). It is a fact that these have ANT+ support, yet you don't see it mentioned anywhere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)
Why yo ask? Well one of the main reasons is that players like Garmin (who are probably the main benefactors and driving force behind ANT+ Alliance), have no interest in making it as main stream technology as it should be by now.
They don't casue if it was then no one would by their $500 sports computers and watches. As the public would realize that they could do all those function (sports tracking) and do it better and even do much more, with a much cheaper smartphone.

I know dcrainmakers article. I read it the day it was published. He is wrong. No one is perfect. I believe that he was misinformed too. He is a cycling enthusiast, and a sportsman, but not an engineer.
Don't tell me that you thing hr is better informed than SAMMobile. They realized that they were wrong too and have corrected their article (all new one).
These people... Just take everything that they read on the Internet as a fact....
If you want to disprove me, cite some hard evidence (manufacturer startment or technologycal info). Quoting a bloggers suspicions is hardly enough.
P. S.: I like rainmaker, that is why I read his blogs. To ve perfectly honest, I was surprised that he got this one wrong as he has good relationship with ANT consortium itself. However ANT itself confirmed to an acquaintance of mine that S3 cannot and will not support ANT, meaning they had their facts straight and he did not.
I have seen other articles from him that were loosely based on facts. As I said blogger.

For example you can buy Sony Smart-Tags & Manage its tag with Smart Connect App
the thing is you need nfc tag & an app that manage tasks

I had the same question about NFC tags when I had my S4. The biggest factor I found out was whether the tag is compatible with NFC Forum protocols. The older Mifare Classics tags are super cheap but aren't always compatible (they weren't with my S4.) You'll want to buy tags that are compatible with NFC Forum protocols, such as the NTAG203 or the Topaz 512.
We'll know for sure what tags are compatible once the phone is out. I've got a pile of NTAG203's laying around so I'll be ready to test those.

Thanks for the information, I did not know I needed to download an app and I hope the NTAG203s work with the Note 4.
Now that the phone has been out a few weeks, has anyone expirimented to see which tags work? I want to pick some up and play with some NFC commands, but not sure which type to get.
I have used tags for a while.
I have just tried my note 4 on the tags I have programmed and worked on 3 different devices, S3, M8 and nexus 7, however with the note4 I get a compatibility error 'unknown tag type'
I even tried some fresh tags I have never programmed and got the same error.
The problem is I cannot remember what type of tags they were as I have had them for a while. I think they were milfaire......
I am also just starting to research and play around with the NFC technology. I am hoping it is a little more reliable that Llama was with geofencing or Wifi detection to change phone states/settings.
I purchased these and they should arrive this week http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E0NRESE/
I am also thinking about getting the Topaz 512 variants for the additional storage space like these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FS4AF0S/
These are both "type 2" NFC chips. Depending on what you want to do, any Type 2 chip should easily store settings changes. If you want to store a lot of data or use fields, like with a business card, then you'll probably need to go to a type 4 chip.
I recommend staying away from the 1K chips as they are not as compatible. An example would be these that you would not want to get - http://www.amazon.com/Tags-Chip-Pack-Keychain-Bonus/dp/B00CE6QGLU/
Topaz 512's work
I ordered some Topaz512 chips to experiment with and received them yesterday. I can confirm that the Topaz512 do work with Note 4.

soooooo nope they don't work,I had a Note 3 and the tags I used do not work on the note 4, confirmed by Samsung Canada..you need the Samsung tactile 2..can't find them anywhere..soooo I only use NFC to communicate between my old note 3 (given to the misses) and my note 4...and I thought only Apple did the scam to change everything a bit so you'd have to buy everything again...

So I bought the Topaz 512 chips and I am having issues with them being read by my Galaxy Note 4 Edge. There wouldn't be a difference with the Note 4 and Note 4 edge would there? My phone does end up reading them but it takes multiple taps- like 6 or seven before it reads it. Does not really save any time, I usually just give up and do the NFC task manually. I do not know if I am doing something wrong or what. Anyone else experiencing this? My first thought is that I have Tasker, NFC Tools and an app called MyLog that all can write to tags, could it be that the phone doesnt know what to use? I never have any issue with Tap and Pay. Any suggestions?
Necropost here. Is there an answer?the old tags I used with the s3 don't work, who knows what tags work for sure

I ordered mine from aliexpress. Some of the stores there already have the stock from the first production batch, and if they haven't sold out yet you might get the phone by 1-2 weeks. Mine has not been dispatched, but the seller already has the phones in stock and will ship them in a few days. I still need to wait a little longer because the phone needs about a month to reach my place.
From its specs, performance, and price, I say it's a very good phone. I cancelled my Umi zero order and switched to this phone.
I also ordered for my wife the Meizu M1 Note which has almost similar specs. It's still in pre-sale, and its availability is not yet confirmed.
3GB version of how much money?

I've visited the site before but never bought anything from them because there are stores at aliexpress that sale items cheaper than them. But very careful if you want to buy anything from aliexpress. Make sure you read the negative ratings first, then you can decide whether the store can be trusted or no.
My S3 has been shipped today. I still need to wait about a month until the parcel arrive at my place

My order was shipped 19 days after I placed the order. It's not the store's fault, they are waiting the phones to be sent by Jiayu.

Not out of the box. The factory doesn't install playstore, but most sellers would probably installed themselves. The vendor from which I bought it does this.
I have this phone, after a quick firmware flash all the google apps are supported :
Firmware: http://www.needrom.com/download/jiayu-s3/
Review video (without google apps):
Camera sample pictures: http://colonelzap.blogspot.de/2015/02/jiayu-s3-review-mt6752-64-bit-octa-core.html
i buy it today on spemall.
so i waitting .:fingers-crossed:
i read on a forum for this phone some guy already port miui v6
Can we hope for a custom recovery ROM?
TWRP is my favourite one.
Without TWRP/CWM recovery, it's very hard to install gapps. I found ADB method, but I never used it before so I didn't understand:
1) Are MT65XX drivers compatible with MT67XX chipset?
2) Once the phone is connected to windows, what do I have to do exactly?
3) Is there any chance to do it by using an Ubuntu server?
I already tried googling before, but I didn't found any simple guide.
I ordered mine from Pandawill. The phone (3Gb version) will be in stock on 14.02 and
according the description will have Play Store installed .

you can install play store manual with root permission. just extract important apps and some of lib and framework using root explorer.
if you don't know to do, i will make tutorial soon if i get this phones.
p/s: i really excited to get this phones and will be my second phones from china company.
I hope this phone attracts many developers so we might get lots of customizations etc...
I hope that in near future there will be an update to Lollipop - this will help the phone to use the full capacity and functionality of the 64-bit processor.
About manual procedure to install gapps, I still haven't got the phone than I can't try.
But other users made something similar and they didn't reach the goal.
However somebody told my that once you installed jiayu.es app, you can install custom CWM recovery. He didn't test everything, but it looks like it's working (4 example, touch feature is working).
About Lollipop, Jiayu first officially declared lollypop very soon (march) but now they also declared their focus is on getting actual ROM more stable.
You really don't need to fix the play store / Google apps manually, just flash a new firmware that includes all the Gaaps and that's it
This is what the new FW looks like, google apps are all working, plus some gaming:

Great video, and I did laugh at your gaming.. sorry...
I would like to ask, after spending some time with the phone, do you find any bugs/problems/glitches?
May be somethings are not working as they should?
Hello everybody,
I recently bought and installed a new head unit as an infotainment system for my car. Now I'm wondering what kind of operating system this is and what options I have to adapt it. I'm brand new to the Android Automotive world and trying to get an overview. I can't quite make sense of the information I can find in the settings (see screenshots). It seems to be based on Android 10, but I've read about version 12. Also, it installed a pretty bad launcher. I've tried others but would be interested to see how google's vanilla stock launcher would look like. But since I couldn't find one, I got even more confused. I am also surprised that the so-called security updates seem to be several years old, but are considered up-to-date (no updates).
Even if this sounds very clueless, can you help me to orientate myself? Are there maybe custom roms that I would have to exchange?
Many thanks in advance!

Can anyone really try to help me with this problem?
What problem? Trying to find thr stock luancher? I think there is no built in launcher with android for cars. You can find custom ones on the play store.
Since you get no updates, you rpoboably bought a outdated device.
Okay, I would like to simply upgrade to a current firmware. I may not have made that very clear. I don't know much about such head units. Is this different from smartphones where I need a special build for a device to flash the ROM? I'm confused because I couldn't find out anything except the SoC name.

Are you sure this is not the latest firmware. If not, you can use fastboot to push a update.
No, I have absolutely no idea what versions are available and if I have the latest one. How do I find that out?
In other words, even if the manufacturer doesn't offer any updates itself, is it possible to flash your own "roms"? So they have to be specifically compatible with the head unit, or are there generally valid ones? As I said: I know very little about this area :-(

The rom has to be made for your device, and even that’s not all, it has to be made for your Model (certain models of the same device may not be supported). Google your device rom to see if there are any and if there are, confirm that they support your model.
Ok, thank you in advance for the support.
How do I get the device name out? You can see my screenshots above. The only thing I can read from the device is the name of the SoC.
Since I bought it from a dealer on Ebay, who also didn't provide any further information, I can't read it from him or the packaging either.
Does it not say you device name when you click on about in settings?
The device name seems to be a Qualcomm chip name. Can you link me to the listing?
Probably off-brand, as not brand would name their device a chip. If it’s off brand, prob no custom rom.
I misread something, is this your device?
Wow, 2 mistakes in a row, I did not misread something. Can I see the listing?
Unfortunately no, the seller has withdrawn the offer. I checked myself earlier whether I can still read the offer text from my account in order to read out information. I have emailed the seller and am hoping for a reply.
What you said about the no-name brands sounds logical. There are an infinite number of such devices on the net - most of them look very similar, at least in terms of appearance and connection technology. The only thing these offers have in common is the processor name. That's why I always hoped that there would be universally compatible roms that would enable new features. But the way you describe it, it seems like I don't need to get my hopes up too high.

I'll check later when I'm home! I'll give you feedback then!
The offer from the dealer is no longer online, but there is a very similar offer for a different type of car from the same dealer here:
Für Skoda Octavia Fabia Praktik Yeti Superb 8" Touch Android GPS Navi CarPlay 4262370642976 | eBay
Entdecken Sie Für Skoda Octavia Fabia Praktik Yeti Superb 8" Touch Android GPS Navi CarPlay in der großen Auswahl bei eBay. Kostenlose Lieferung für viele Artikel!

I cant learn anything from that.
Yes that is what I thought. The offer does not show any important information. By the way: I would have no problem installing a new head unit from a well-known manufacturer. The fact that I did that with the device in question a year ago was because I had no idea and because it came as a complete kit (that is, including a CAN bus adapter, bezel, etc. ...). However, I do not know where I can find good devices for my Skoda Fabia 2015, or what other options I have.

Aren’t all head unita compatible with all cars. Search for one from a known manufacturer, and for good value for cash.
your seller seems very shady. This may not even be android 10. Mind checking with this
If you are unable to install it, that means the scammer blocked the app, and it is fake. Otherwise, this will tell you your real android version and other things if it being spoofed?
