wifi connect stuck in 'obtaining ip' loop - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

the Mrs. got her gs4 on Saturday. not rooted, stock. (I actually haven't even looked to see if there's a root for it yet, not that she'd let me yet)
All is well except I can't get it to connect to home home router's wifi. stuck in an 'obtaining ip address' loop until it gives up. router is a:
Linksys WRT54G, Wireless-G
All other phone's in the house have no trouble. I triple and quadruple checked her settings.
I turned "wireless hotspot" on on my 3vo and she was able to connect to it no problem. (this is actually how she was able to get through the initial setup, as it required a wifi connection).
today we'll try some other hotspots.
any idears?
Thanks!

fwiw, the saga concluded itself this way:
after making sure there wasn't any mac filtering, that there was plenty of ip address availability, and that there we're any other usage restrictions, being the culprit, the fix was to update my router's firmware. its previous version was from 2005 and the latest version available it from feb 2012.
(before you do this, make sure you take note of all of the router settings. i snapped a quick pic of all of the pages that looked too complicated for me to remember)
per linksys's website's instructions I:
updated firmware.
reset the router.
power cycled it, w/ 10secs off.
confirmed settings setup back to the way they were (which oddly enough they were already set(?). i thought that holding in the reset button in the back until to the power button flashed would've reset to factory defaults, but it didn't..)
by the time I picked up the gs4 to see what was up, it was already connected.

[Voda UK 1.43->1.66] Wi-Fi No More

Hi folks,
Upgraded to v.1.66 a while back (I'm on Voda UK) and can no longer connect to my Wi-Fi network. Done reset to factory defaults twice. Immediately after reset and during initial setup HD2 will successfully connect to Wi-Fi but that's about it. Any other attempt to connect will fail.
Wi-Fi is available (2-4 bars depending what part of the house I'm in).
Overall, every time I tap on the wi-fi it will look like HD2 is trying to connect but with no result whatsoever. Like trying and dropping straight away.
Tried with no seeming result:
- setting static IP on DHD Broadcom adapter
- changing Data Encryption (AES to TKIP and back)
Wi-Fi worked b4 the upgrade to 1.66 (from 1.43). Didn't have to change any of those settings above.
Logs on Wi-Fi router won't register any attempts to connect. My pure guess is that signal/connection/whatever drops b4 any IP address will assign.
I know that not a lot of information but that's what I have gathered so far.
Ideas? Thanks.
look at all other adapters and set them to dhcp... no problems with wifi on 1.66. make sure your router is configured to allow new wifi connections...
Replaced router today. Seem to have sorted the issue. Will keep my eye on it.

No longer detects my hidden WLAN unless I reboot

Does anyone else have this problem?
My home WLAN is hidden, it doesn't broadcast it's SSID. I've never had a problem until maybe the last week. Now my phone won't connect to my WLAN (or any other hidden WLAN that I had connected) until I reboot my phone. Once I reboot BAM it connects right away.
In all likelihood it might have something to do with my custom rom. Guess I should get cracking on a v3 with the latest OTA anyway...
I had this exact same issue a while back I while using a flipz rom.. one version of flipz it connected to my hidden network no problem the next minute it refused to connect I never got an answer so I just gave up
hopefully someone can shed some light on this because it has been bothering me for a very long time
I don't know about routers that have WLAN configured on hidden mode, but don't you guys have an internet provider service for your home and could maybe work if you tried looking for your/their router provided Homepage Login details on Connections/Frequencies/Settings? I don't know much to say but this is maybe an idea, because I had a router with SBCGlobal Internet Services from AT&T on my home lines and we have the top tier DSL service including hidden lines for using the internet as in internet ip addresses, so I'm just saying I could connect with the key included but I don't necessarily have your problem per say, maybe it could be the router or WLAN itself to be reset settings on it for a reboot maybe and it might work, maybe not.
Sorry if my reply fails. I thought of this upon thinking from myself in my head.
I use my own router, not something provided from the ISP. The same thing happened with my father's router over the Thanksgiving holiday. I connected to his network fine after I configured it, but the next time it wouldn't detect it. It's definitely the phone. Guess Jiminy v2 isn't perfect Back to the drawing board!

[Q] Nook Color - Wi-Fi connected but can't add google account or browse web.

I just loaded phiremod 6.3 onto my Nook Color. When I attempt to add my google acount, I get "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server." When I click on the market app, I get "Could not launch the requested activity." When I open the internet browser, I get "Web page not available."
I have a strong wi-fi signal that my computer, cell phone, and another Nook Color are able to use without problems. The tablet says that I am connected, the signal is strong, and I'm not in airplane mode. I can't seem to find any posts that address the problem of not being able to add a google account AND not being able to browse the web with a solid wi-fi connection.
This is my first post so let me know if I put this in the right category and if I need to add any additional information.
Thanks in advance.
I thought this might be a problem with the newly released phiremod 6.3 because my device was working just fine on 6.2. However, I just flashed back to 6.2 and experienced the same problems. I can't make sense of this especially since the device is successfully connecting to the wi-fi.
Have you verified that if you reboot a PC on the same wireless network it works properly? Could your router have run out of available IP addresses? Possibly not handing out DHCP properly? Maybe your DNS servers you have listed in the Router were down temporarily and your computer was using cached information previously. Several scenarios that could be valid here. I'd like to find out first if a PC on the same wireless, connected wirelessly, is working.
Also do you have MAC address filtering on the network? So you're connecting w/ no issues but not able to surf because it's blocked.
If you go to the admin GUI of the router do you see the NC in the DHCP client table after you are successfully connected to the WiFi network?
Good Luck, I'll try to think of any other things.

Thanks for your reply Deltabear.
I share a wireless connection with my apartment landlord so I don't have access to the actual router. However, I can tell you that his computer is the only other one that uses it, and only for a few hours during the day. I rebooted my pc, and it's having no problems with the wireless connection. I rebooted my other Nook Color, and it too has no problem with the wireless connection.
I just remembered that when I loaded phiremod 6.2 it connected to the wi-fi. Then I experienced a boot loop when I tried to flash 6.3. I still have no idea what went wrong when I flashed 6.3, but everything went downhill from there. I ended up trying to revert back to stock, but instead of a bootloop at "Touch the future of reading" I got stuck in a bootloop at the N. I performed the 8x method and received an OTA update, but remained in the bootloop. At this point I decided to just go back to trying to flash phiremod 6.3, and this time it worked...except for the wacky wi-fi problem.
When you go into settings>Wi-Fi settings Is the router listed with connected underneath it? Or does it keep saying 'connecting'?
If it says connected press the router name and it should bring up a box in the middle of the screen with
Status
Security
Signal Strength
Link speed
IP address
What does it say under each?
Well the problem seems to be resolved but I don't know how or why. I turned the Nook's wi-fi off, and when I turned it back on I was able to add my google account, browse the web, and open the market. I know turned the wi-fi off and on several times yesterday so I am still perplexed as to why it seems to be working now.
To answer your question DreamingWolf, the router always said it was connected. I don't remember what the info was for it when I was having the problem, but I know I looked at it a few times and nothing seemed unusual there...I am however a noob.

problem connecting to wireless

I have a network with a hidden SSID. today, I changed my google account password due to google telling me mt accounts was accessed from malaysia (....), so when I got home and turned on my tablet, it prompted me to re-sign in. except I forgot the new password. so I hit home and pulled up the browser, at which point it disconnects from wifi. and I couldnt get it to reconnect or see my network. I reboot, nothing. So I changed the password on my macbook, which works fine on the same wifi.
then i tried to connect on the tablet again, nothing. so i deleted the network from the tablet, then re entered it. nothing. so i changed the configuration on the router so it wasnt hidden. it does now appear in my tablet's list of visible networks, starts to connect, says obtaining ip address, then disconnects and tries again.
any ideas? fyi my android phone is working fine.
It's a well known issue, though with all the 3.1 update threads lately, it's been pushed off the front page.

thanks for that, one of the people in those topics said using the reset button worked so i tried that and it did. got the newest OTA too, hopefully that has a fix for this. if not, i also downloaded superuser, TB and Android terminal emulator, so i'll have those as options for a fix if it happens again.
of course, i'll need to be rooted to use them, so is there any way to root on 3.1 yet? gingerbreak is broken, I know that cause I just tried.
Yes, there's a thread on it in the dev section. It was rooted about 20 minutes after it was released.
Well it looks like the OTA didn't fix it because it just happened again. So I tried the reset and that worked this time too. Come on Acer, you can do better.
The OTA patch didn't work fully for me either...
Every once in a while when changing WiFi's (work to home, home to a friend's house, etc...) it'll not find the Access point name and disable that connection. I have to turn off Wifi and then turn it back on before anything will connect or search...
I still have the path where to delete the .lease file so I continue to check for that.
The .lease file has not been there the last two times, but connecting is still an issue.
Fortunately, it's a simple thing to turn off WiFi and then Turn it on again and then Ask the connection to do it's thing...
..but yeah. Acer? A little help over here...
I'm stuck.
I soft reset my A500 four times in a row with no luck, so I went ahead and rooted the thing to delete the lease file as mentioned in other posts, and as it turns out I didn't even have a dhcpd_wlan0.lease file in /data/misc/dhcp -- I had no files in that directory at all.
I don't want to deal with a factory reset, but if I do, I'm still sunk because I have no lease file to delete to fix my problem in the future, since that seems to be not my problem.
Running 4.010.13_com_gen2, updated yesterday I think to this version, went to work, everything was great, got home, nothing is great.
Any other ideas besides a factory reset?
Static IP's FIX this issue.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Returning to work has fixed my issue temporarily anyway -- I am connected once again on my work network. I will shut down before I leave for home and see if that allows me to connect to my home network again.
After which, static IP is the way for me, I s'pose.
Thanks!
setting the static IP worked immediately for me as well. I found a great guide for any users who are unfamiliar with how to do this.
Step 1 is to know your lan network topography: ipconfig /all at a command prompt will give you your computer's IP address, as well as your host/gateway (usually a router). It also helps to know how to log into your router (usually the first octet in your IP range, eg. 192.168.1.1 is a router running DHCP, while your computer might be 192.168.1.4). Examine the IP range that the DHCP is assigning..often it is limited to a certain number of clients already, or you can do so yourself (I have mine set to hand out 10 IP's only via DHCP, while my actual LAN is manually assigned throughout).
Step 2 on the Acer is to open wifi connection properties and select your own network. The Properties Dialog will pop up, and right below Signal Strength, is says 'Network Setup, with a little marker for a dropdown. Select the marker/dropdown and click 'Manual'. Scroll down in the dialog, to IP settings, click the dropdown marker and select 'Static'. Plug in an IP address, subnet and Gateway (router) IP addresses..I left network prefix alone at 24. I also use custom DNS addys (OpenDNS) but you can also simply point them to your Gatewat/Router IP with no problems. Scroll back up and enter your Network Key for the level of encryption you're using on your WLAN, and you should connect right away, since we are no longer relying on the router's DHCP server (and the DHCP/IP assignment bug on the Acer), and once this is done, it will stay that way indefinitely.
Click to collapse
I had issues pulling an IP connecting mine to my old router, so excluded part of the routers subnet from its dhcp scope and entered a static IP into the A500 for that connection and it has been working fine since.

[Q] DVP not recognising home WiFi anymore.

Hi, I recently bought a 16Gb DVP on WinMo7 and for three weeks had no Wifi problems at all. It recently stopped finding my home WiFi router. It finds both neigbours routers but mine is missing from the list.
I then got an update notification for the Mango update which I competed. the router didn't return in my list of networks immediately but about two days after.
It has now dissapeared again but 'Mango' has the added 'Advanced' button to see 'known neworks'. My home router is in this lst but I cant access the settings or force any paring.
I've tried the obvious of turning it off and on. I've reset my router, reset my phone back to a clean boot of windos 7.5 (mango) and still no results for finding my router. All the other phones in the house and all laptops find it fine so I can only presume it is the DVP.
Details:
OS version - 7.10.7720.68
Firmware Version - 2250.1800.7720.219
Don't know if this helps.
Does anyone hav any idea why and what I can do to resolve it.
thanks
Jock
Try changing the SSID (name of your wireless network) to something else and see if your DVP can see it and make sure the SSID is not hidden.
Thanks, tried that last night. No luck I'm afraid.
On the router admin now and It's all as it should be fom my service provider settings.
I have a full signal of my neighbours router and just don't understand why it's chosen mine to not even find. When it appeared last time it was after turning the router off all night. I tried that again last night but it didn't appear this morning when I turned it back on.
Confused !!!
Jock
have you been able to connect to and maintain future connections to other wireless networks? if the same problems happens with other networks, I'd run a factory restore on your phone as it seems there might be a software issue. However if you can connect and then are able to re-establish a Wifi connection to other networks then I'm stumped!
I've just changed the SSID to something completely different and it's appeared and I'm now connected again.
All I can say is that it connects to the router for around a week and then the network dissapears.
Short of changing the name every 7-10 days I can't really see another resolve.
In answer to your other question, I haven't really used it on other networks.
I'll see how it goes with this new name.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions
Jock
After reading other posts, this might be an issue with the .219 firmware that you are on. Just keep checking for updates. You could try a hard reset of the phone and then a reboot of the router
Also make sure your router is set to either B or G mode. Check my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324949
Thanks, I did a hard reset when it first went off, still found nothing when it re-booted. I'll keep an eye out for the firmware update.
Thanks again.
My phone just started doing this as well. Very frustrating as I cant download large updates and I dont want to exceed my data cap. I am totally fed up with this phone!
Fixed. Called Dell. Long press network name. Press delete. Press network name when it shows again. Reenter password. Works!
