Anyone else's lock screen do this? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I have preview messages in lock screen and status bar checked on. Why is it that when I click on the message in my lock screen this blank box appears that I can't do anything with? Never had so many questions about a phone considering I get so many a year. I've attached a picture for reference.

It's a built in function. For instance, once you click on the text, you swipe in the box below and your phone goes right to the text.

From what I've been able to tell, the swipe on that lock screen is actually a widget. The box that sometimes appears is the area where the swipe trail can be triggered.

Swipe down on the message notification, then you can click on the text message notification on the lockscreen.

that helps, although I dont see the point in bringing the box up. Not like it really matters where you swipe as it will unlock.

Its no unlocking the phone by swiping the box down. Its "enabling" the lockscreen text messaging widget that google implemented in 4.2, because by default samsung overrode the aosp lockscreen with its swip from anywhere.

So does that mean there's no way to get rid of this box that pops up?

That is correct, there is no way.

I guess it's been awhile since I used my s3 and it's just something I will get used to.

very simple to get rid of that box...... but it requires using a different messaging app that is the only way right now until roms are built

Swipe to call?

Is it just me or does this version of Touchwiz not have the option to swipe right to call a contact? I can swipe left to message someone but no swipe right. Kinda disappointing cuz I used that particular feature extremely often with my S3 and Note 2...

It's definitely there. Make sure you're swiping on the contact name and not their profile picture.

Well damn. I was used to swiping from anywhere on the other phones. You guys are right though, its there. Thanks for the quick responses!

[Q] What do the text message notifications look like?

I am very curious about something that really isn't a big deal.. I don't have a S4 yet, I have a Galaxy Nexus. When I get a text message I have 3 options in the drop down notification shade. Reply, Read, Call or something like that. I have had ROMs on this phone since I got it so I am not sure what options are suppose to be in the notification shade when you get a text message on Jelly Bean phones. So when you guys get a text, by pulling down the notification shade what are the options you have if any? Thanks!
I personally don't get any options It simply shows the persons name, and the first part of the text (or amount of texts if more than one)
If you tap on it it opens the person - no options like the above.
You may find different SMS apps give more options in the notification bar and they have been incorporated into the roms you have been using

You can't expand it? (Drag it down with 2 fingers)

You can but that just shows more of the message. Doesn't give any options.

Just go to messaging settings and enable to show preview of message

Somebody help!

My friends s4 (top picture) shows the date and time in the notification bar. No matter what settings I change, mine (bottom pic) only shows the time, also only shows time on the lock screen, where his shows date and time. Ive checked "show time" in lock screen settings. Nothing has worked!
Thank u in advance!

Glad to see that Urlacher decided to retire instead of puting on a different team's colors...
Try changing the system font back to default (Settings>Display>Fonts) that may have something to do with it.
Definitely glad about that as well! But yup we tried changing it back already and nothing...im @ a loss..
Im sure its some simple setting im over looking..

Try this:
When you pull down the notification window, click on the time in the top left. This will pull up those settings... check to see that both are the same.
It could be that the format you have set is too long to fit in that spot.
That was it! You sir are a scholar and gentleman, Thank you! !*!*!GOBEARS!*!*!

Where are the format settings? I only see an option to add a city after clicking on the time in the top left.

If you have World Clock enabled, you can get to the settings mentioned at: Settings>More>Date and Time

Is this possible? Nav buttons in notifications tray?

I've seen the apps and edits to remove or replace the navigate buttons (home, back, recent apps) or even move them to the side... But what about moving them entirely to the notifications tray? Is this a bad idea?
For the videos and apps that remove the tray, there could be a hot corner or gesture to bring it back up. Should I have patented this idea before posting?

That's called tablet ui.

Patent it or not, Apple would still steal it.

Tablet UI would bring it to the statusbar. Not the notification area.
To the OP: this would be bad for accessibility. Imagine using an app that requires you to double press back to exit. You would neet to pull down the notification area twice... just to close an app.

Fullscreen app gives you two hot corners, replacing the back/home, but I found I kept accidently hitting the corners within other apps or surfing, no matter whether I put them top or bottom. I ended up using Pie Control app, customised with Nav buttons to solve the problem. LOVE the huge screen via fullscreen.

Wow sorry for my late reply everybody. Thank you for you feedback. I haven't looked at tablet ui but I will. I have installed GMDs auto hide nag buttons. I like it. Sometimes. One thing I do not like is that the menu button for apps like Chrome are automatically moved to the navbar. I know I can turn it off but the menu button is just gone. Not a huge deal but I also don't like how it is sometimes less responsive than the stock navbar. Either way, I'm still shopping.

You should try AOKP rom which you can toggle phablet and tablet UI, I've been using this feature since 4.1.
As for in app menu button, there is in option called "Show menu UI overflow" in the rom to enable it.

Can't remove this icon from homescreen! Which app is it?

This icon with a white background and black person inside a circle appeared on my homescreen today. What app is doing this and how do I get rid of it?
Screenshot http://i.imgur.com/USGDi6M.png
Greetings, you should be able to Disable this Icon in your Phone Settings
Go to the General Tab and tap Accessibillity there Disable the Universal Touch Feature
I'd probably edit the post to say silhouette instead of something pottentially offensive to some.

Don't be silly and read it in context. Obviously doesn't mean a "'black skinned" person.
And the accessibility options for universal touch is correct as I've enabled this before.
