The real answer is if you have ICS, to install a custom recover or custom kernel you must have an unlocked bootloader.
The following resources are related to the new bootloader, a quick read of the OPs of the first two are highly recommended, even if you install with the third link. (This is to have a highlevel idea of what you are changing on your device, as it will help you find what you need to look closer at in future if something goes wrong, or possibly prevent a problem in the first case) bootloader thread civato's guide Afterota tool (windows users bootloader install tool)
If you already have the unlocked bootloader installed, but can't boot into recovery:
This is likely because you have a stock ICS rom overwritting recovery with the stock recovery in every boot; either use fastboot or (if you have root) a program such as acer recovery installer to force the install of a recovery and immediately reboot into it. (Most bootloader installers will also install a recovery that you can immediately boot into)
Once in recovery you can backup/restore/or install a rom modified to prevent the overwrite of recovery. (More advanced users can stop this from adb by removing some files)
Personally I use a lightly modified version of the stock rom you are using now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1661492
it ought to be safe to do a no wipe update to that and receive a more expected environment with a custom recovery, optional custom OC kernel, and busybox support.
However if you explore the dev section, many other (both more and less modified) versions of ICS roms exist. Themed and otherwise. So feel free to explore.

Hey guys, so I recently unlocked, rooted, and created a nandroid backup using TWRP with wugs program. Anyways I want to put on a new ROM and kernerl and I was thinking of either the CleanROM 3 (4.2.1) with m-kernel or the Linaro ROM and Kernel combo. Which one would you guys recommend? Does these ROMs support flash? And how do I use wugs program to do these steps as I am not good with adb haha.

you should first figure out what you are doing, what the rom and kernels are called. they arent called Linaro rom/kernel, linaro is the toolchain used to build them. and you shouldnt use root toolboxes, figure out how to flash roms and kernels right first(through your recovery), before you end up started a "i bricked my seven" thread.

you can go into your recovery a multitude of ways. in twrp, wipe data, flash your ROM, flash your kernel, then reboot. if you are just updating your ROM, you don't have to wipe a thing. if you are flashing a different ROM, then you have to wipe data(factory reset). don't worry about wiping dalvik or cache as they get wiped when you flash the ROM. when flashing kernels, you never have to wipe anything regardless of what you read. the dalvik and cache have nothing to do with kernels. I suggest you experiment with a few different Roms and kernels, I prefer the rasbean jelly ROM with the trinity kernel.

Cool, i will have to experiment but Im having troubles getting into recovery mode. I get into bootloader and selet recoverymode but then it doesnt bring up TWRP, it just shows the droid with the door to his guts open with an exclamation mark. I tried goo manager and then go into recovery but the same thing happens. I have to hold the power button just to get pass the error.
You need to install open recovery Script in the settings tab of goo and it will find and download the latest version of TWRP and install it for you, if you had a custom recovery and installed a ota then it deletes it and you are left without one.As long as you are unlocked and rooted you should be golden.

no. even if you do it the right way(no root toolkits) there is a command to flash your recovery permanently or a command to just boot it once(fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img as opposed to fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img). yes, wiping = factory reset.

you can leave it in downloads, just where you downloaded it to if you downloaded it straight to your device. yes, install is flash. just find it where it is in the filesystem. if you downloaded it straight to your device, it will be in the downloads folder. btw, trinity kernel goes great with rasbean. trinity kernels http://derkernel.com/jb-seven.php press the experimental tab, alpha0(4.2.1 kernel). flash the rom, then the kernel, then reboot. rasbean comes with the busybox installer app, open it after booting up, install busybox(you need it for root apps to work properly). install it to /system/bin, youll see the option.

if its not there, its this one, the best one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
and yea, its all very easy. its just a matter of learning what the terms mean, and getting over the fear of breaking your device. even rooting the device from scratch is very easy, to many easier than a root toolkit. its just the fear of doing it.

there are free cpu control apps in the market, and on xda. but the best way is to use the trinity kernel toolbox(it has extra stuff included, that the free apps dont have, but its a paid app. its worth it, but its definitely your call). btw, everything thats included in the trinity kernel toolbox can be done free via the terminal emulator(many of those scripts are in my signature), but the app just makes things easier and gives support to a great dev.

you can install flash on the browser via finding the apk here in the forums or via flash installers in the play market. rasbean is an aosp based rom, aosp roms have the aosp android browser, which supports flash. all you need to do is install the apk.
you use the command either in a terminal emulator app(many good ones free in the play market), or finding some of these locations in a root file explorer, then manually editing the variables. some of the scripts/locations in my signature are only for the galaxy nexus, but many are for the nexus 7 too.

11.1.115.27 ,it hangs the browser constantly. Even when going to this site browser would hang. Now that it's uninstalled browser isn't crashing. What's that benchmark that I see on the forums comparing the nexus 7 to the evo one x and transformer prime?
I fixed my problem. For some reason it was the rasbean ROM I think, because I flashed clean ROM and flash is working like butter. Although I put enable plug ins on demand because when I got on a website with several flash videos playing it would make browser freeze up.
Hi. I have been recenty using CM10 on my Defy and I wanted to change it. As I installed my CM with 2ndinit recovery it automatically changed to TeamWinRecoveryProject. So lately I was trying to flash this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515036
But as you can see, there is this line:
For CM10,10.1,10.2 < 07.11.13 users:
To install KitKat, need update recovery. Do not forget reboot, after install recovery.

I don't actually know, how to install new recovery I tried to flash it with TWRP, but after reboot I wasn't able to open it at all I tried to use ROM manager and other apps like this, but nothing worked. And I don't know why, but after a couple of reboots, my system crashed somehow: as the CM logo showed up while booting it just didn't move farther and kept like that. So I used RSD Lite and flashed SBF file just as it was described in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828639
OK, so now I want to install new recovery and ROM. Can anyone tell me, how to install recovery which is needed for QUARX's CM11?
And also: I don't know much about this, because I'm a newbie, but I heard that it's recommandable to change Kernel too. I heard that it would speed up my phone etc. Is it true? How can I do it? Which Kernel should I use? I didn't change anything while rooting my phone and/or installing CM10.
Just because you're a newbie, it doesn't mean you can't read through before asking questions. Read this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568325. No kernel change required.
Hi all,
I want to install custom kernel on SHV-E330L, if custom kernel malfunction then phone will not boot. So i want to confirm in which state phone will be, on galaxy s4 startup logo or will not power on at all?
I think aboot and recovery both are bootable partition so it is possible is aboot is does not work then phone can boot into recovery through recovery partition or start in download mode?
Can you still access recovery and download mode?

Ahh, okay I see now. If there's a problem with your custom kernel then all you need to do is boot back into download mode which will still work, and then flash the kernel that you were using before again.
So basically, have a copy of a kernel which you know works on your PC ready, in case you have a problem and need to put it back to the way it was.
You shouldn't have a problem though, as long as the custom kernel which you want to install is for the correct android version etc, it should work fine. I've never had such a problem.

You can only restart the phone from recovery, not boot from recovery. But as I mentioned above, as long as you've got download mode your phone isn't broken. You can mess up anything on your phone, as long as you don't break download mode it's recoverable. You pretty much need to do something really stupid to lose download mode.
Stupid things that could make you lose download mode and completely brick your phone include, but are not limited to: flashing a kernel made for a completely different device Or selecting repartition in Odin but not adding a PIT file.
Never install anything that isn't made for your exact device! There are exceptions, but if you don't know exactly what you're doing then you're just asking for your phone to be bricked. So don't.
I was running on an older version of TWRP. Also I had uprooted my phone recently due to battery heating and media server issue. Guys, hi
There is one more new problem. I tried to update the OTA update but got stuck at boot screen. It's not responding after the Lenovo logo. I think the issue is not having any recovery(custom nor stock). How to fix this issue? Please help me to

# Update the OTA update( I badly want this as I saw that Resurrection Remix requires the device to presently run on stock Lollipop to update. I soo badly want to use CM13

can you boot into the system? if Yes then use rashr app and flash twrp's img file from the storage.. and reboot to recovery and u don't need to update to stock lollipop you can directly flash cm12.1 by ed300 and after booting into system once you can install any lollipop or marshmallow rom with the help of recovery. i advice you to not to do update as u r a root user.

You first hv to root for the installation of recovery.. First root ur phone then install stock recovery.. Using flashify or rashr.
If you can boot into system, then you can use adb sideload to flash zips(recovery or rom).
For detailed info, google it or go to http://www.droidviews.com/sideload-roms-mods-using-adb-sideload/
If it doesn't work, root your phone and then install flashfire. Then use it to flash recovery.

Hello,
Thank you soo much. I flashed TWRP 2.8 using Flashify and it works. Actually I wanted to do a factory reset to solve "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" issue. Can I flash the TWRP 3.0.2-0 similarly using Flashify? Also please do suggest some good ROMS bro. Im still on the KitKat version( S040_150805)
