[Q] Corrupt boot partition aka aboot - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I want to install custom kernel on SHV-E330L, if custom kernel malfunction then phone will not boot. So i want to confirm in which state phone will be, on galaxy s4 startup logo or will not power on at all?
I think aboot and recovery both are bootable partition so it is possible is aboot is does not work then phone can boot into recovery through recovery partition or start in download mode?

Can you still access recovery and download mode?

Ahh, okay I see now. If there's a problem with your custom kernel then all you need to do is boot back into download mode which will still work, and then flash the kernel that you were using before again.
So basically, have a copy of a kernel which you know works on your PC ready, in case you have a problem and need to put it back to the way it was.
You shouldn't have a problem though, as long as the custom kernel which you want to install is for the correct android version etc, it should work fine. I've never had such a problem.

You can only restart the phone from recovery, not boot from recovery. But as I mentioned above, as long as you've got download mode your phone isn't broken. You can mess up anything on your phone, as long as you don't break download mode it's recoverable. You pretty much need to do something really stupid to lose download mode.
Stupid things that could make you lose download mode and completely brick your phone include, but are not limited to: flashing a kernel made for a completely different device Or selecting repartition in Odin but not adding a PIT file.
Never install anything that isn't made for your exact device! There are exceptions, but if you don't know exactly what you're doing then you're just asking for your phone to be bricked. So don't.

*FIXED* "unbrick". Can't flash custom recovery anymore, bootloop, native linux
Hello guys,
so let's "unbrick" a A500.... Anyone ?
flashed kernel image (linux native) works very well, can boot into Linux, could also boot into Android a few hours ago. Tablet was powered off, i tried turning it on, Android = bootloop. Can't flash a custom recovery anymore, so now i'm stuck on Linux (Not to bad, but Android is OK too).
Any ideas ?
EDIT:
Probably a good start:

ok, so the update.zip cannot be loaded from the sdcard.
Other options ?

if i do that, the linux kernel will be loaded, there's no cwm recovery on my recovery partition. This is used to boot linux.
btw; HOW ? hehe idk. Just flashing stuff, partition layout looks good, only the option to flash the cwm recovery is currently not available
Loading update.zip's from sdcard won't work either.

Refer to the previous link. Should reformat your partitions, and install a rooted 3.2.

He's just living life on the edge of insanity Bro
Would like to know from the OP, if it worked.
Been there done that.. NEVER AGAIN
I actually myself flashed the recovery to boot linux native boot.. yes M D .. this is a predicament that you find the answer before you flash that
of Course you can reflash the correct recovery if you do not toast android..Also you might could try a hard reset see if it will stop boot loop.
you found the flaw in doing this.. BUT YOU forgot one thing.. How to reflash the recovery.. This you have to do thru adb. its in the Dev forum on how to install recovery.img thur adb push.. be sure to run its magic as the instructions show..
just my opinion.. you should have not flashed this into your recovery partition if you did not know how to get out of it.
sc2ks thread and thors recovery thread both have your fix... Good Luck..

You have way too much free time on your hands
well i suppose i could also flash the recovery from linux right, boot linux on the tab, look for the correct partition
# cat /proc/partitions
dd if=blablablabla
adb still works "a little" can use adb, can't get root permission, but i'm able to get the uuid with adb devices.
Was to tired yesterday to try stuff out, today will be the day
So let's dd a cwm recovery on
mmcblk0p1, should work
So from with linux i get this uuid's

No i need to find a way to run itsmagic somehow
Ok, i'm probably screwed nicely.
no devices attached with the tool given earlier.
Any other ideas ?
Ok, so i went home, took the table, gave him a kiss, booted up my linbox, and all magic on hands, WindFu*** didn't recognized the whole tab with adb, so listed devices was 0.
So, as i sai, i went home, booted up my linbox, adb devices, and taddaa, there was my uid.
Back to freaki*** Windblows, used the tool from method 1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Now there was one change i had to make, the cpuid was set with a:
0x0 in front of the uuid, i had to remove 0x otherwise my uuid wouldn't fit in the tool, started the tool, flashed back to android, all done.
Thanks folks!

[Q] Flash Custom Recovery Without a Computer

Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster
I was wondering if there is currently a way to get a custom recovery on my phone without the use of a computer. I was able to root my phone using towel root, and first thing I did was install Rom Manager and start to make a nandroid backup until I got:
" RECOVERY BOOTING...
RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit: recovery"
So I went into download mode, hit cancel and was able to boot into android but to this day I am unable to get into recovery, stock or custom. Due to my current complicated situation I do not have access to a computer and was hoping there was a work around to allow me to implement a custom recovery without a pc. I want to be able to make a nandroid backup, flash zips into the OS, and possibly experiment with other roms... I have tried looking into this myself but the only thing I came up with us an app called "Flashing Tool", though I don't know whether that will allow me to do what I want it to. Oh, and I don't care about Knox being flagged by the way.
So ladies and gentlemen of the Xda community, I beg for your assistance and would greatly appreciate any answers you can give me.
My phone is a T-Mobile Note 3, rooted stock Kit Kat rom, any other info needed just let me know.

After that message it just restarts into a boot loop showing that message over and over until I pull the battery, boot into download mode and then hit cancel so the phone boots up normally. Currently I do not have a recovery menu at all, not stock, and not custom.

Ok, installed Mobile Odin, first thing it said was to make sure I have the proper boot loader or it could result in a soft brick. Now it shows me the different partitions, one of them being "recovery"... Now what file exactly should I be using? Do I flash it to that partition or do I just use the" Open file" option? Can you guide me through it at all? I appreciate all your help thus far!
Edit: I believe I found the correct file to flash... Please correct me if I'm wrong but being that I have the T-Mobile version of the Note 3, my boot loader should not be locked right? So I should be able to flash this file *n9005-cwm-recovery-6.0.4.7-kk(0125).tar* using mobile odin, and all should be good, right? I would post the link but I'm a new user and cant... But this is the description of the file: SM-N9005/SM-N900T/SM-N900P Qualcomm Note 3 – CWM Recovery -*Download*-*Credits*(Also works for T-Mobile/Sprint)

[Q] File recovery From Bootloop'ed Nexus 4

Hi,
I Need help .
I have nexus 4 with stock ROM and stock recovery.
Two days after OTA update to Lollipop, the phone got stuck on boot-loop.
The problem is that on the phone i have a very important voice recording of a cop that says he will lie in court.
The court time is coming and i need that recording!
Everywhere i looked, no one has an idea how to recover a boot-loop'ed phone.
The 2 options that people recommended are:
1. RE-Flash the ROM.
Maybe it wont delete the files.
2. Wipe everything and hope that the file is recoverable with one of the software's.
A. What do you recommend?
B. Did someone try any of the recovering software's with any luck of actually recovering?
Your bootloader is locked, correct?

If your bootloader is unlocked you can try flashing TWRP recovery which has a built in file manager and mtp function to copy files to computer. You can also try to "dirty flash" another lollipop rom which will not wipe the data, but may not work.
Yeah, this is the only option, however, this can only happen if his bootloader is unlocked

Unfortunately, as far as I know you can't flash any Rom's while your bootloader is locked. You need either fastboot or a custom recovery to flash a custom ROM and both need an unlocked bootloader.

Yes, after you've flashed twrp you should be able to access your files from a computer if you're booted in recovery.
soooooo.....
i flashed the TWRP Recovery.
very easy. no errors.
and it shows as the storage is completely empty! as if someone in all this time wiped everything...
so now, what recovery software do you know/used/heard of?

When the storage is completely empty, are you booted in recovery, the bootloader or just trying to boot normally? When you say it's empty, do you actually see the device on your computer? If so, is it completely empty with no folders or files or anything, or just stock stuff?
Can you check mount and make sure all the storage volumes are mounted? It's usually blank when they are all manually unmounted.

Accidentally wiped OS from phone

I accidentally wiped my OS from my phone when I wasn't paying attention. All recoveries wiped as well. It will not boot past startup screen. Odin v3.07 and 3.09 both display FAIL when I try to flash the stock ROM back. I am using a G900P. Help?
How do you accidentally wipe an OS from a phone?
You're putting the phone in download mode for ODIN right?

Try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...in-sm-g900p-oa6-official-restore-rom-t3022826
If you're putting your phone into Download Mode you should be able to flash a custom recovery onto it (such as TWRP - the one I personally use.)
Try flashing that onto your device then flash a ROM through TWRP - You can mount your phone and SD card onto a PC through this, allowing for you to access the devices file system here.
Then, if you really wanted to, you can go through Samsung Kies on your PC and restore back to the original TouchWiz ROM from Samsung. It'll ask you to verify your device and ask you to put it into download mode but not sure if you'd want to go back to stock.
If you need any more help, just ask here and I'll give you a hand.

It's quite basic, you simply just go into TWRP and select what you want to be mounted to the computer from the custom recovery. If you need more help here, just let me know.

PLEASE HELP!!! Phone stuck in bootloop, will not boot. Will not boot into recovery.

I've had my Moto X Pure for over a few months now. After rooting it, i installed TWRP 3.0.2 and have had different roms and not come across any problems regarding a hard brick. I was using my phone on the CM 13 Rom, and it was bugging out, so i tried to reboot. After trying to reboot, it would come to the WARNING BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED SCREEN and not boot past that, let alone get into the actual loading screen. Now, i cant boot into twrp. When i try to enter recovery mode, it goes to the TWRP screen, and sits there without proceeding. I cant boot the phone, or boot into recovery. I can only boot into the bootloader. ANY AND EVERY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED THANK YOU!!!
Edit: I fixed it. had to manually extract and reflash some files from a very useful restore to stock tool.

Can you get it into fastboot mode? If you can, it sounds like somehow the recovery is corrupt and you would need to use 'fastboot erase recovery' first, and then 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' (using the twrp .img flashable file of course)
I hope that does the trick. Only think I can think of other than that is look for the automated return to stock tool for the moto x 2015 and use that.
thanks

I honestly have no idea what the problem was. But i downloaded and used someones lollipop restore to stock tool, literally restoring to the original state you got the phone in, and it worked. I believe it had something to do with the rom, and possibly some xposed modules i had installed, but there was nothing that actually messed around with the phone's system files. I couldn't access recovery in anyway whatsoever, but my advice to you is that if you ever need help because the phone is potentially hard-bricked, see if it connects to PC and if it does use the restore to stock tool.

Now, my device is automatically getting On and OFF in seconds and does not boot beyond the bootloader 'unlocked' warning screen. Please please please help !!!!
