Galaxy S4 and the MHL adapter - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, some of you may remember that the S3 had to be connected to the charger to output via HDMI using the MHL adapter. I just did a quick test using the S4 and the same adapter and good news! It now works without a charger! If you're interested in seeing it in action take a look at the video.

Thanks for sharing!
I need to buy such an adapter.

Hey, which adapter do you have?
Is it the same as the one for the S2?

Do you think the S4 will work with any generic MHL adapter? Does Samsung use anything proprietary?

While it is backwards compatible, the s4 supports MHL 2.0 (i.e. it has a new adapter that does not require external power). You can use the old one, however.

I just read the newer Samsung devices use 11 pins. I don't have a samsung device so I cannot test to see if it works on the 4S. Where are the pins? I'm assuming the 11 pins are on the male usb connector. Can someone please verify this. It would be great if someone could find or take a picture of what the pin setup looks like so I can tell if it is compatible. My eyes are not the best right now, (missing contacts) so its hard for me to count the pins.

I'm guessing it's proprietary

Look lag a bit, isn't it?

Cool. Does it support multiple resolutions, or is it just 1920x1080?

My skiva and menotek do not work with my s4.

The S4 HDMI output is looking better as I do more tests. Previously the S3 couldn't send sound to my Philips TV (sound worked fine on my Samsung TV) now using the S4 the sound works! Also I'm happy to report that everything (web browsing etc.) is coming across to the TV in 1080p.
Also when playing a video on the TV you can use the S4 to do other stuff.

It's great that you do not need to connect to the charger.. but I noticed that when I do connect the charger to the mhl adapter, the phone doesn't charge at all.. Is this the case for everyone?

After some testing I have found that in order to charge the phone through the MHL adapter you must:
1) Plug the charger into the wall socket.
2) Plug the charger into the MHL adapter.
3) Plug the MHL adapter into the phone. Phone should start charging.
4) Plug HDMI cable into MHL adapter.
I've tried plugging the adapter/charger/phone in different ways and the above way was the only consistent method to get the phone to charge and output to HDMI.
I hope this is just a software issue and can be fixed, it is a bit annoying to have to plug everything in a specific order.

Hello!
I curently have the Galaxy S4 i9500 with the S3 MHL adapter and I confirm that it does not require anymore the charger, but yes it seems to be a specific order to plug everything as sometimes it did not charge for me.
I have a question: Is the S3 MHL adapter able to charge the phone via HDMI or do we need to buy the last S4 MHL 2.0 adapter? Does not work for me but maybe my TV does not support this (quite old, about 4 years).

I don't think you can charge via HDMI regardless of which adapter you have. If you want to charge you need to plug in the charger.

Greaaaat! Thanks for the video!!

HDMI charging is possible only with the original S4 adapter, it also supports 60fps... BUT, in order to recharge, the adapter must be connected to an MHL ready TV, otherwise it won't charge!

Charging from USB?

I keep getting a red X Through my battery when plugged into my laptop to charge, is this normal? I really dont want to plug into the wall to charge
Really hope this doesn't become the case and that it will charge off of any USB charger...in particular like the one in my car that accepts USB Devices.
My friend has a galaxy and has the same issue, idk if its our laptops or what
Okay this has been address. please search but ill answer for you.
This device uses 5v 2a to charge. Hence the wall unit. you computer is 5v 1a or 1.5a (its not enough)
The device will maintain and in some cases when screen off slowly charge when plugged into computer or usb adaptor with the red "x" through it.
you can find a usb adapter cable which has a switch to allow you to charge while connected to a computer. its a data and charge switch. search for it. i think its on ebay.
also you can find on amazon or google shopping wall chargers for the p1000 which work for like 8$

Having this Y-cable will also help with the fact that the USB cable that came with the tablet is so sort. I have a lot of 5V power supplies around but they are all from 50ma to 1a. Can't believe this thing needs to much power to charge, I would think that 1a would be enough just to maintain it when in use.
OK, I got a couple Y/Split cables and I still have red X when plugged into two USB ports, I even tried two ports that are on different controllers... as well as two USB3 ports in my laptop. I even tried my desktop. No luck.
Has anyone gotten this to work?

The red x will show up if you are charging with anything under 2A. If I remember correctly usb 1 puts out 100ma and usb 2 & 3 put out 500ma. Even with a Y adapter you will only get 1A. If the screen is off then you will charge the battery however with the screen on, you are using the same amount of power that the usb is providing. Therefore the x because the battery is not charging.

It doesn't matter what kind of charger you have. The only thing you must look at is the voltage of the source (5V DC) and it must be a micro usb plug

im using my old htc hd2 charger as the samsung one seems to have packed up and isnt charging properly
The easiest way to charge your Note is of course via a USB>Micro USB cord plugged into a laptop or PC (where you are guaranteed the voltage is correct), however if you are using a generic or knock off wall wart charger than provides a micro USB connector there is some small chance that it will not charge your Note.. look for the charging icon and if its not charging, toss the charger and get another.
There is no specific risk to the device, provided that it (the charger) has a micro-usb intended for charging generic devices..its just that some modern portable devices have a stricter requirement (tighter tolerance) for charging voltage and simply will not charge outside that voltage range.. my BB9930 does exactly this..

Since all micro/mini usb chargers have the same voltage, and vary only in the power output - the only problem you could face is slow charging, or no charging at all if the charger doesn't have enough juice. But it certainly won't harm the phone.

My stock charger has a slight squeal, so I usually use the charger for my BB Curve 9300. Does totally fine.
My Note was purchased from expansys UK but shipped in from mainland Europe. As it was to be sold in the UK, expansys had to supply a UK adapter rather than an EU one ...I received an HTC adapter with my phone. At first, I was worried, but discovered that it works beautifully with my Note. Charges faster than generic Samsung chargers too! You should be fine using another standard charger

Most modern USB chargers should be fine (I use my old iPhone charger for the Note, for example.) Watch the power output though - some tablet chargers are rated at 2A+ and that could overdrive your charging circuit and cause damage. If you make sure your charger is about 1A (and 5V, obviously) then you should be fine.

Well emuX said it all!
1A of output and 5V and you are fine!
Actually the charging current is limited by internal resistance of the battery, so the battery effectively "accepts" charge. Charging current is not "pushed" in by the charger...
obviously a charger from say a BB is likely to be current limited and so longer charging times would be expected, but an iPad charger will work fine.

I wouldnt worry too much, I charge my note with my iPhone charger purely because the USB port faces a different way so I can actually fit it on my plug extensions without loseing 2 sockets.

I think the N7 needs 2A to charge. a single USB is 500 mA and the dual 1A, so I don't think there's enough power.
Also check if the output of your microUSB cigarette charger is 2A

I'm having the same issues. All of my microUSB cables give me the error. Anybody know of rated cables that will work? Seems crazy that I get the error with every single one of my cables, but not with LG's bundled cable. I've used these cables to charge a DNA, GS4, HTC One, Nexus 7, etc. with no issues at all.

Anybody know where to buy certified Quick Charge 2.0 chargers/cables? I know my DNA had Quick Charge 1.0 and I loved it, but I could never find more chargers or cables that supported it.
Same here. 50% to 100% in an hour and a half.

So heres what they said.
Thank you for contacting Monoprice.com. In regards to your inquiry, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between USB 2.0 devices to 5 meters (or about 16 feet) and for USB 1.0 the limit is 3 meters (which is about 10 feet.) The longer the cable the more power it would require to charge devices and sync. You might need a active USB cable since the LG phone would require more power. At this particular length the power would charge slower. What is the the length of the OEM cable from LG that you're using? With the 1.8A charger with the 15ft cable still slower compared to the shorter USB cables?

[Q] MHL 3.0 lead for Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Hi guys.
Recently ordered the Note 4, and was wondering if anyone else has managed to find a positive 100% working MHL 3.0 lead yet.
I've been searching high and low and not found anything yet beside the usual MHL 2.0 USB 3 leads.
Used to output to my HDMI all the time from my S2/S3/S4/Note 2 etc. But ever since I've had the S5 (soon to be Note 4) I haven't been able to find an MHL 3.0 lead since the old one no longer works.
Tried changing HDMI cable to the latest standard just in case it was that (but it isn't). I know you can get the 5-pin adaptors that supposedly work with the 11-pin for the S5 (and presumably Note 4). Was just wondering if anyone else has had more success, or is it merely a waiting game until someone finally releases a proper lead for it.
MHL 2.0 works fine. Granted you still need external power, but that's no biggy.
Well, currently in my country only Sony have MHL 3.0 cable but it can be useful with Sony 4K Bravia TV, even Samsung doesn't have any product for MHL 3.0. http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/sony-dlc-mc-mhl-3-0-cable-1-metre-p47838.htm
I suggested you pre-order Avier MHL 3.0 adapter http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/sony-dlc-mc-mhl-3-0-cable-1-metre-p47838.htm for future-proof since we can't disclose about the compatibility of Sony cable on any other product.

Why the need for MHL 3.0 ? Unless you've a 4k TV to output to then it's really kinda pointless......
Because at the time I posted it, I didn't know the note 4 could run with mhl 2. Now I do, it's no longer a problem. Unfortunately the option to "shut down" this thread has so far eluded me. Otherwise I would have shut it. But I suppose in the future, some people, who may want 7.1 and be able to use it without external power may want to know.

Newer devices don't need external power for MHL 2.0, at least that's what i've read.
I am also looking for mhl 3.0 cable because its suppose to be able to charge the phone up to 10w of power. Currently with mhl 2.0 adapter I'm loosing battery fast because it only charges slowly, same rate like usb charging

I just bought a newly released samsung MHL 3.0 adapter (part # EE-HN910FWESTA). Once I receive it I'll post back with my opinion. Hopefully it solves the charging issues of MHL 2.0.
I'm on the lookout for an MHL 3.0 adapter too, especially if it chan charge the phone at a decent rate while connected - and preferably with the added bonus of a USB OTG port too - though I'm not sure if/how that would work at the same time as the MHL.
I'll post if I find one...
The Samsung mhl cable needs a power cable to it as the note 4 does not power the adaptor.
But it works. Also note 2 smart docks and screen casting dongles.

Not sure if youve had any luck but I just recieved my Samsung MHL 3.0 adapter Part# EE-HN910FWESTA and can confirm that it passes approx. 1A of power through to the phone using my official galaxy S4 charger while the screen is on and 1.5 when locked. As soon as I leave wotk Ill also test it with video and the adaptive fast charger.
Nah, in the end I just bought the MHL 2.0 lead. Although I was sunrises at how quickly that drained the Note 4 battery, even with power connected and the screen brightness set low.
I'm curious to hear your fast charger results. Have you tried it without external power to see how well it works just off the phone battery? Curious to hear how fast it drains.

Nope, it's definitely for 3.0. Even says it on the adapter. Here is the link. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EE-HN910FWESTA

Unfortunately I'm getting mixed results. While plugged into a 2a Samsung charger at home I am getting enough juice to charge the phone, however when using it in my car connected to my appradio using a nonoem 2a charger the phone discharges even faster than with MHL 2.0. It looks like I may have to invest in a power inverter for my vehicle, for this to work. Also to answer your question, it does drain pretty quickly.
i bought an ET-H10FAUWEGWW MHL2 cable on Amazon, doesn't work with my note 4 (but work with my note 3)
which MHL 2 cable is working ?
i can confirm that mhl 2.0 is working on note4 and its not some kind of brand name just regular chinese.
Can you give me an MHL 2.0 reference that works with Note 4 ?
So Ive got a Z3 and im wondering which mhl cable to get? Can i use samsungs mhl 3.0 cable? Does the tv need to support mhl 3.0 ?
