supppose my phone is not rooted i am using a sgy
what if i directly flash rom zip
will it work?
If it work what is thee need of an update zip?

The need if a update.zip is to root your phone only and install the superuser app. It is safer to root before u flash because the chances of success are higher. If u got bricked go here to ask.

Happy flashing and press thanks !

u mean flash custom rom? it's just fine. almost all of them are pre-rooted.
and in that case, u wont need the update zip for rooting

Root I9100 XXLSJ JB Firmware on International Galaxy S II

Helo guys,
Most of you might have eagerly downloaded the leaked firmware and anxiously flashed the rom last night. But might have been stuck at getting root.
CAUTION: Flashing CF root or Some other version of Siyah Kerne will soft brick the device ending up at Boot screen.
Ok now.!! Root is now avaiable through PhilZ CWM v3.1 kernel.
This is a just a guide to those searching for root and ending up in bricks flashing old cf roots and siyah kernels.
1) Download the zip fie from the link given at the end of post.
2) Put it on to the SD Card
3) Switch off ur Phone.
4) Enter Stock Recovery by pressing Power+Home+Vol.up buttons at once and hold.
5)Now flash the zip by selecting Install zip from SDCard.

Good to know. Could you please provide step-by-step detail. I have JB 4.1.2 XXLSJ installed on the GT-I9100. I tried ODIN v1.85 and 3.04 but it does not take the Philz CWM 3.1 zip file. It looks for tar, smd, md5, gz, tgz. What steps do I need to take to make this file work with ODIN?

Bro but I do not know where you remove the root
U cannot remove root, kernel or recovery per say and you cannot remove root from rom and keep ur rom intact. If u want, back up ur note 2 by apps such as G Cloud. Use traingle away to remove major root traces if u want to return to stock rom, so u can update normally. Then, u have to flash stock rom or any desirable rom which r available in the forums. I hope this helps

You will successfully get an OTA if...
You're using the stock kernel
You have not renamed/deleted/mangled files in /system
You have not installed garbage like Beats etc which modify libraries
You have not screwed with your framework to bling it
ie: YOUR ROM IS STOCK
You STILL get, and apply an OTA, if you have..
Unlocked your bootloader
Rooted your device
You're using a modern CWM or TWRP

If you install a custom recovery you won't be able install the update naturally. You'll have to download the update and install from recovery manually.

Good point, but it will install just fine. But yes, you have to boot into recovery and flash the OTA zip file.
