Hello,
I'm trying to modify the sound played when a NFC tag has been read/detected.
I've already updated my NfcNci apk using the one found on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026439&page=15 (I do want NFC polling on while screen is on but unlocked). NFC app works like a charm with this mod!
What I tried:
- Unpack apk manually, extract ogg, modify it (basically just a negative gain on it), repack apk, push back to phone. Didn't work (NFC app keeps crashing)
- Use NinjaMorph to change the ogg file. Didn't work (NFC app keeps crashing)
- Use apkmultitool : extract apk, optimize my modified ogg, repack apk (without re-signing it), push back to phone. Didn't work (NFC app keeps crashing)
Any hint on what I'm doing wrong and what I should rather do?
Thanks!
As you are not changing any dependencies or xmls. I would just open up the apk with e.g. 7zip as an archive. Drop and overwrite the ogg
Push back to /system/app/

Just did that, still the same thing (NFC App keeps crashing).
Out of curiosity, I did what you suggested on the original google app, and that time, it did not keep crashing, the phone did not have an NFC service at all...
Are there any specific guidelines for ogg files? I used a pretty standard ogg config (64 kbps, 44 kHz, mono).
I've atatched the two resulting apks just in case that's helpful.
Thanks!
Hmm. I'll have a closer look tomorrow.
If your on stock ROM. Did you remove the odex file after making your changes.
Just for testing purposes could you upload the version of the apk you want to mod and the ogg file you want to put into it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm indeed on stock ROM (Franco kernel though, but it shouldn't be a factor, should it?), I did remove the .odex file.
I have attached the apk I'm trying to modify, and the ogg file.
Thanks for taking the time, appreciated

OK the stock is only sampled at 16khz
and also they are not compressed within the archive
i will have a quick test and let you know how i get on
---------- Post added at 01:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:56 PM ----------
OK i think we have results
i tried just dragging and dropping into the archive which resulted in "unfortunately, Nfc Service has stopped"
it is to do with the raw.ogg files getting compressed when you add them to the archive
i tested with my own NfcNci.apk by setting it to store and it worked fine
give me a minute and i will upload your version for you to test
i dont have any NFC tags to test fully however NFC was there and does turn on and off, and also doesnt FC so let me know if it works for you
EDIT:
OK File uploaded
I hope this is the version you wanted modifying
the last apk you posted with the end.ogg inserted into it
Oh OK, didn't think about the ogg being compressed! I'll try it for myself. Thanks for uploading your apk though, and thanks for the explanation
No worries. I could not add a single uncompressed file in 7zip so I had to use winrar
It should work fine if you want to give it a shot yourself though.
From what I tried.
With compression - fc
Without - everything seems to be functional
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well, I did just what you suggested, and it works perfectly. Thanks a lot for the tip :good:
Is that a regular thing that ressources (images, sounds...) should not be compressed in apks?
Oh yeah, and since I can't do it (less than 10 posts), maybe you could post your apk to the thread I mentioned in my first post? There was someone asking for a discrete NFC read event there
To be fair it's been a while since I last made proper modifications to apks
The only other item I know that needs to be uncompressed is the boot animation

A fellow xda member showed me this thread and I'm glad to have read it. This is the exact problem I've been having for a couple weeks and it's been driving me nuts.
I'm having this same problem still
Do you think I could get some help from one of you guys.

Yeah me too!!!
I had this issue, this is what I did to silence NFC sounds on a Nexus 5 running stock Android 5.1.1. (UPDATE: this caused a constant NFC force close after a dalvik cache format and I had to restore both the original .apk and the .odex files to fix it. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK)
-Extract NfcNci.apk with adb to a work folder on your PC.
-Make a copy and store it somewhere else (usb drive, cloud drive, whatever)
-Rename the extracted NfcNci.apk to NfcNci.apk.zip
-Create a folder named "res" in the same work folder where the zip file is
-Create a folder named "raw" within the "res" folder you just created.
-Open the zip file with 7zip
-Navigate to res/raw inside the zip
-Extract the 3 .ogg files to the res/raw folder you created earlier
-Open one of the extracted .ogg files with audacity
-Edit->Select->All
-Edit->Remove Audio->Silence Audio
-File->Export
-Make sure to export as "Ogg Vorbis File", Mono, 16000Hz, 16-bit PCM (just like the .ogg file we extracted) and overwrite it
-Repeat for the 2 remaining .ogg files
-At this point we have:
Code:
Work folder
|--NfcNci.apk.zip
|--res
|--raw
|--end.ogg (filled with silence)
|--error.ogg (filled with silence)
|--start.ogg (filled with silence)
-Open a console, navigate to the folder where the .zip file is located.
-Run this from the command line:
Code:
7za -mx=0 u NfcNci.apk.zip res
7za is the command line version of 7zip. -m sets the compression settings, where x=0 means Store.
-Now rename NfcNci.apk.zip back to NfcNci.apk
-Push it to /mnt/sdcard using adb
-Copy it to /system/app/NfcNci/ overwriting the stock one
-Change permissions to rw-r--r--, user root, owner root
-Remove /system/app/NfcNci/arm/NfcNci.odex
-Reboot

I've figured out all apk files are really just zip files, but why am I not able to unzip the framework-res.apk file, edit the images within, then save it again without causing my phone to hang on boot?
Is there some step I am missing? I've tried rezipping with normal compression, store only, and only photoshopping and resaving a single image within the apk and still it fails.
How are images edited and updated? What am I missing?
I use apkmanager myself for most theming. You might look into it

An apk is a zip, but it's a *signed* zip
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Here is the way I do it. I use 7zip to do this and I think it is the only program that can do it.
The way you can do it is to extract the drawable-hdpi folder within the framework-res.apk then do all your edits and save them with the exact same file names. Then you can go back into your framework-res.apk and drag and drop the drawable-hdpi folder back in and it will over write the original ones. Now just hit the Up (like to move up a directory) button until you see the message "framework-res.apk has been changed. Update it in the archive?" then click yes. Now you can put it on your phone without force closing. If you were just editing framework-res and it was not within another .zip file then you won't get that message and that is fine.
APK Manager.
You can use extract/zip (2/3) for image-only edits, but you need to decompile/compile (9/11) to mess with xml files.
Do *not* sign system apks (like framework-res.apk). Do sign other apks.
Btw, this is in the wrong forum.
(Next step: learn about the update.zip packaging script. Remember to name it something besides update.zip afterwards, because on the Fascinate we're installing everything through Clockwork, which should be the only file actually called update.zip.)

Oooh! I didn't know this app made xml's editable. That opens up a whole new set of theming fun. I can't wait to release my new theme. It should be well received (I hope)

I considered putting this in Themes, but this was a theme development question, so here it ended up. If the Theme and Development forums ever hook up and have a few drinks, then spawn a sub-forum, Theme Development, I assure you it would have been a much easier decision to make
Thanks everyone for helping me out. My last time playing with a phone is an old WinMo 5 device. Anroid seems limiting in it's own ways (no dedicated theme files (can't update without losing the apk theme), but much better for customizing for a 'look' of the OS.
Hey guys, I've been up since around 6 am working on this theme for the stock AOSP music app and I don't really care how it's applied as long as it is. So I've edited all the .png's but want to know how to apply them.. I tried zipping it back up and as stupid as this sounds, I can't get it out of a zip format. it just gets saved as Music.zip.apk. Any help would be appreciated!
Copy the original APK with a new name.
Open the new APK with 7zip or something like that.
Drop the edited files back to their folder (res/draw-hdpi or something like that). Allow overwriting the original files.
Sign the APK (using apkmanager, for example, if you think it's too complicated to set up the signing environment that allows doing it from right clicking the file).
Alright thanks man!

Ok, So after copying 200 or so png's in the Drawable_xlarge_mdpi and the drawable_mdpi folder, I get my image mods after flashing.
But, they still only show the stock number of images, 9 or 10. Charging works ok.
So somewhere, there are some xml files I need to edit to reflect the filename additions?
Or am I missing something else?

Thanks. I kind of figgured those were the xml files I was looking for. Problem is, I'm playing hell with de-compiling my framework-res to be able to edit the xml files.
Can't make much progress with the apktools available, even when including the dependancy apk's. So clearly I am a noob with decompiling framework-res
So my next question, is there any difference between a com gen 1 stat_battery_charge.xml; for the a500 and 501? If not, is it feasible to switch the modified xml to replace the current stock one?
here is how i mod those files as well as the icons and so on
i copy the system ui.apk to a folder on my desktop
i open it with winrar.. DO NOT EXTRACT IT.. pull out the folder containing the png files or xms you want to edit.. Just drag and drop them to another folder..
edit them to your hearts desire.
open the system.ui apk again in win rar.. drag the edited folder back into the system.ui.. push it to your tablet.. to say download folder..
then copy it to the original place it will ask you to replace say yes.. your tablet will CRASH .. REBOOT then if you edited the files corectly it will boot and show your changes.
i dont know if this is the correct way easiest way .. but IT DID WORK FOR ME.. USE AT YOUR OWN DESCRESSION..
I could send you the apktool I am using. Its the only one I have found that works worth honeycomb.

Thanks Erica! That's what I've been doing Actually, wanted to do some editing to the xml files itself. It's easy for png's, at they don't get compiled.
Anytime we take the first step, and install iconiaroot, we do so at our own discretion
Here's an updated apk_manager if you prefer that method.
I normally use a CWM zip since I have to reboot anyway. You can usually start with any theme zip and just make sure their updater-script copies /system to /system and just look through the zip to see what it copies, and if it looks normal, you can make the directory structure the same but copy your own over the old ones (and delete any orginal files that you won't be overwriting). i.e. it should look like:
system/app/SystemUI.apk
system/framework/framework-res.apk
system/fonts/blah.ttf
Just drag your files into the zip in the same place and use it.
And then as a precautionary measure, just do this once or any time you mess with more files (for inexperienced modders): Make a 2nd copy of that zip and call it blah-revert.zip then copy the orginal files over those modified files. Once you have both zips on the device, if anything goes wrong you can flash the revert to get back quick.
GgI am currently working on a major update to the apk manager application as well and changing the name to APK Multi-Tool with some new added features and also to fix some issues with some code errors.
I am also changing a lot of the features as well since a lot of the code has been outdated for a while.
I have updated all the files and modified Apk manager's Scripts to fix many user reported bugs from Daneshm90 apk manager which he had written a simple script to ease the process of editing apks. Got a lot of downloads so thought its in demand
Whether you're doing basic image editing or editing the smali or xml files, on average u have to use (Brut.all or JF's smali/baksmali) awesome tool to extract the apk, edit it, then sign the apk and then adb push/install it. This process is quite tiresome if you are testing a method that needs fine tweaking.
This script should make the process a LOT smoother.
Theres an option of compiling/signing/installing all in one step
Thanks:
Goes to Daneshm90 the Original Writer of APK Manager
Goes to Brut.all for his awesome tool.
Goes to JF for ofcourse, smali/baksmali
Features:
- Added framework dependent decompiling (For non propietary rom apks). (Option 10). Checks whether the dependee apk u selected is correct.
- Allows multiple projects to be modified, switch to and from.
- Allows to modify system apk's using apktool but ensures maximum compatibility in terms of signature / manifest.xml
- Batch optimize apk (Zipalign, optipng,or both)
- Batch Ogg optimization
- Batch install apk from script (option 19)
- Batch Theme Image Transfer TOOL
- Batch Theme optipng TOOL
- Batch Theme Zipalign APK TOOL
- Compression level selector (monitor status above menu)
- Error detection. Checks if error occurred anytime u perform a task, and reports it
- Extract, Zip apk's.
- Incorporates brut.all's apktool
- Improved syntax of questions/answers
- Logging on/off has been removed. Instead a log.txt is created which logs the activities of the script organized using time/date headers
- Optimize pngs (ignores .9.pngs)
- Pull apk from phone into modding environment.
- Push to specific location on phone
- Quick sign an apk (Batch mode supported)
- Read log (Option 24)
- Sign apks
- Supports batch installation, so if u drag multiple apks into the script (not while its running) it will install them all for u. U can ofcourse drag a single apk as well
- User can change the max java heap size (only use if certain large apks get stuck when decompiling/compiling apks) (Option 19)
- U can now set this script as ur default application for apks. When u do, if u double click any apk it will install it for u.
- Zipalign apks
- Much Much More
Instructions:
- Place apk in appropriate folder (Any filename will work, if running for first time folders will not be there, you must run and then the folders will be created)
- Run script
- Minimize the script
- Edit files inside the project folder
- Maximize the script

FAQ
Resulting apk file is much smaller than original! Is there something missing?
First: compression of resources.arsc file. Sometimes this file is compressed in original apk, sometimes not and apktool always compress it. Second: lack of META-INF dir. Apktool builds unsigned apks, so they lack signatures stored in this dir. Third: apktool uses newest Android SDK, so it could optimize files better, especially if original app is old. So: unpack both original and resulting apk, remove META-INF from original and then compare sizes. If they're still much different, then you could report on XDA or somewhere.
There is no META-INF dir in resulting apk. Is this ok?
Yes. META-INF contains apk signatures mostly and after modifying apk in no longer signed, so there are no signatures in it. You have to sign resulting apk and then META-INF dir will be created.
What do you call "magic apks"?
Sometimes there are some apks which (for my current knowledge) are invalid, broken, theoretically they shouldn't exist. There may be many reasons of their existence: my lack of understanding of Android resources; some non-public, maybe future SDK tools or custom modifications of these; manual hacking of binaries, etc. Usually I can't do anything about it, but you could at least try to replace broken parts by something valid. Actually it's quite likely that they aren't even used, because if they would, then application would crash.
Got problems ?
1. Make sure your path has no spaces
2. Your filename has no wierd characters
3. Java/adb are in your path
4. It's not a proprietary rom's apk (aka Sense,Motorola,Samsung) (If u are, then use option 11 and drag the required framework, eg com.htc.resources, twframework-res...etc)
5. It's not a themed apk (if it is, expect .9 png errors, use as close to stock as possible)
6. Look at the log to know whats happening
7. If all else fails, post as much info as possible and we will try to assist you.
TO DO LIST
Add new feature to Randomly Generate a new Key File for signing the apk files after modifying and recompiling of the apk files this will also allow of uploading to the android market as this added feature will allow you to sign apk files that you may of compiled without signing beforehand.
Modify the Signapk script to be compatible with the Randomly Generation feature in the works
and a few other added features are in the works as I am redesigning the application and rewriting a lot of the code to fix issues as well as some of the new features have broken parts as some features have been moved and broken some command line prompts.
Installing APK Multi-Tool Itself
Instructions (Linux):
1-Download, create a folder in your sdk called "APK-Multi-Tool" and extract into it.
2-Goto the the "sdk/APK-Multi-Tool" folder and rename "Script.sh" to "script.sh".
3-Go into the "other" folder, right click on one file at a time, goto "permissions" in the new window and check the execute box.(do this with all the files)
4-To add the path to your folder open up a terminal and type in -
sudo su
PATH=$PATH:/THE PATH TO YOUR "SCRIPT.SH"
(for me this looks like the following)
PATH=$PATH:/sdk/APK-Multi-Tool/other/
5-export PATH
6-install "sox"
7-Type into the terminal "cd PATH TO YOUR SCRIPT.SH"
7.5 export PATH={PATH}:/PATH TO Your SDK/sdk/platform-tools/adb
8-Type "./script.sh"
9-You should have a running APK-Multi-Tool.
how to install sox:
Open the software center of the linux service and searched for sox. Installed it and it there you will have SOX working.
- Place apk in appropriate folder (Any filename will work, if running for first time folders will not be there, you must run and then the folders will be created)
- Open terminal and change-directory to APK-Multi-Tool(Easiest way is to type "cd ")
- Chmod 755 Script.sh
- Chmod 755 all files apps inside other folder
- Run script by typing ./Script.sh
- Minimize the script
- Edit files inside the out folder
- Maximize the script

Maybe good to add this in OP when using linux. It is stupid of me thinking it was something harder so thank you for your help and fast response.

You don't need to type in ./Script.sh in teminal in linux , just clicking on it (Script.sh) and select "run in terminal" does the trick without typing anything.

Just uploaded changed attachment. Fixed minor typos in Installation Instructions. Sorry I didn't get it straight before you pushed to github.
I deleted the info for Windows in previous attachments as well due to this being for the Linux version. Didn't know if you caught that.
PS: Thought I would let you decide if you liked my hair brained ideas first.
Is there any way to have a .jar file work without having to rename to .apk, or is that a mind bogling code rewrite. I'm all for learning.
Hey, I made some changes to the script to act more like the windows version of this tool. I added a setup.sh which will create all the folders and set permissions to everything. i also the ability to have multiple projects going at the same time, and also added a separate jar/dex folder so there is no need to rename the jar files to .apk to edit it. and other updates as well. its not 100% up to par with the windows one, but these few changes make a huge difference. Would you be interested in this?

Hey Guys an' Girls!
Anyway, so when I first learnt how to decompile, modify then recompile .apks I found it was a rather slow process and figured out a far faster way.I searched google and xda many times and couldn't find my method anywhere. So without further ado, let's go through an easy, simple, step by step guide on how to modify .apk files!
Step 1 - Getting the .apk
Firstly, of course, you will need to obtain the .apk file that you want to edit. There are two methods to do this:
a) If you have the recovery flashable zip for the rom you are currently on, simply open it up, navigate to the file you want to edit (in my case system -> app -> settings.apk) and drag the .apk file onto your desktop.
b) Using root browser or a similar app on your device, navigate to the .apk you wish to edit and copy it onto your sdcard. Then connect to your computer and copy the file from your phone to the computer.
Step 2 - Editing/Modifying your .apk
Now is the important part. Install Winrar by clicking the link. http://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0 Then open the .apk by right clicking the file -> open with -> WinRar. Now you can look around the .apk file. Find a file inside the .apk you wish to edit. (In my case I'm going to navigate to res -> mipmap-hdpi -> ic_launcher_settings.png). Just drag the file from the .apk and edit to your liking.
NOTE: It is recommended never to completely take everything out of the .apk and then put it all back in. Just do one file at a time.
Then when your finished, select the old file in the .apk and press the delete button. Now drag in the new edited file into where you found it. Easy!
Step 3 - Putting the new .apk back where it belongs
Now of course, your going to have to put it back on your device to see the changes in effect, there's no point having it on your computer! There are two ways to go about this:
a) Open up your rom and navigate to the place where you took your .apk file from. Click on the old .apk file and press the delete button. Now drag your new edited .apk file into the zip. Then connect your device to your computer and drag the rom onto the sdcard and flash it via recovery. Now reboot the system and see your change/s in effect!
b) Copy your new .apk file from your computer to your device. Then, using Root browser or a similar app, navigate to the old .apk file and look at the permisions. (eg. RW--r--) Now delete the old file and replace with the new, but make sure to set the permissions the same as they were before. Now Simply reboot and see your change/s in effect!
NOTE: For some .apk files (eg. Framework-res.apk) there might be missing folders inside the .apk (eg. Values).
Just hit the thanks button, he doesn't bite your finger!
This is an easy way to edit the images only(icons, wallpaper, etc),not XML files,Smali's and such.I do this using the kitchen, easy way if you theme alot.

You don't have to use this guide just for images. That was just the example. You can use it for almost any file inside an .apk. I was just saying that SOME folders aren't there.
Can you guide me to how do i keep same apps of diff versions.

How do I use a flashable to get rid of .apks??? ₩
On the app I have here it returns 20 results that it scrapes from a website. I only want it to return 3 or 4. How do I get in there and change that value?
I want to change values on touchwiz launcher on my note 3, to use it in 440 dpi. When I use it there is so much margin on all sides, and I need to reduce. I need to add a new icon row as well. Can I do that just by modifying the app?

Yes, depending on what tool you use to decompile the apk files it may or may not decrypt them. I use apktool and it decrypts them just fine.
I think this method is no longer working for 4.3+
Modify JAR files

Values).

Thnax for great guide but,my gopro app has a update and I have changed the icon on it but the app store dosent show me the update button. How to fix so I can update?
What do I need to change in an app to substitute it for another app?
OK so I've installed a new ROM and it comes with a kernel setting app preinstalled. This app has been integrated into the system settings portion of the ROM. I want to replace this kernel settings app with one of my choice but I want to be able to integrate it into the system settings like the original app is. I tried disguising the new app by changing the name of the app and .apk files but that didn't work. Closest I got was being able to convert my app to system app but even though I changed the name, the app, when installed goes back to it's original name. Or what permissions or files do I need to change to allow the integration of my app into the settings interface. Thanks ahead of time, it's appreciated.
