I am going from Autonootered 1.1 to the latest nightly CM7 with Dalgrins Kernel using CWM
Please advise
1. Before installing CM7 what all should I wipe / format
2. After installing CM7 and kernel what all should I wipe/format
Also when I update to a newer nightly later
1. Before installing the newer nightly what all should I wipe / format
2. After installing newer nightly what all should I wipe/format
3. When updating to a newer nightly do I nned to install Dalgrins kernel again
Thanks very much
Anyone ? would appreciate some help
Whenever I try to install a new nightly I have to wipe everything. If I don't all the apps when I try to open them just flash real quick then close. I have titanium backup so its not very hard restoring sense I can just restore all apps + data which makes it a very painless process.
In the Nook General forum user eyeballer has an excellent step-by-step guide for installing CM7. Follow his directions and you will be fine. In general, you do not need to do a complete wipe of everything to install CM7 or to update between versions of CM7.
Guys I tried searching and only found this thread
which didn't help me at all
Can someone please explain when to do each of the following?
Reformat
Wipe Data
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
I want to have the cleanest install, so do I do all?
Thanks
I will give thanks to all that help me clarify when to use what in what combination

If you look in my tips thread linked in my signature, I explain what you need to wipe in what situation. But I will explain just a little here.
Ordinarily if you are moving from just one nightly to another nightly of the same rom, just wipe dalvik cache.
If you are moving from one type of rom to another, it is best to do just a factory reset. A factory reset wipes /data, /cache and clears any apps you installed to SD. (And a factory reset automatically wipes dalvik cache since it is located in /data and /cache.)
Never wipe /boot and the new rom automatically wipes /system so you should not have to ordinarily wipe that.
But I have found if you are moving from a CM rom back to stock you need to do a full format with my format zip in my tips thread. It formats /system, /data and /cache completely where using CWM does not.

Thanks so much, I left you a thanks as well
can you explain 2 & 3 again? I have CWM. Is a factory reset same as wiping data? Thanks
Edit: Darn, only limited to 8 thanks per day, I'll get you back tomorrow

Wipe is the same as formatting.
Factory reset is listed in CWM as 'factory reset/wipe data'. And it is shown on the main menu. It does what I said earlier, it wipes /data, /cache and clears apps installed to SD.
Wipe dalvik is shown in CWM in the 'advanced' menu.
Those wipes or formats that are shown in CWM under 'mounts and storage' should rarely be used.

Quick off-topic question:
I have the rooted STOCK ROM and I deleted/edited some system files. Should I revert back to a nandroid back up with the system files in tact, or should I be ok to flash the new official rooted JB ROM (when it comes out) with some system files missing and/or renamed? thanks =)

If you are going to flash the new JB ROM over the top of stock, you do not have to do anything to the stock ROM first. It will be wiped entirely by the new JB ROM as it is installed. But I would do a factory reset/wipe data first as I said in my earlier post.

Oh ok, thanks! So, just to re-affirm, I don't have to revert back to a STOCK ROM with system files unedited in order to flash JB?
Before flashing JB rom, I will absolutely wipe data, cache, and dalvik prior to flashing! Thanks! :cyclops:

No, no, no. Are you not reading my posts? You do not wipe data, cache, and dalvik when you install a new ROM. Just do a 'factory reset/wipe data'. That wipes everything for you. The other wipes are redundant!
And to re-iterate, you have to do NOTHING to stock before flashing the JB ROM. Leave it exactly as is.

Thanks. I got you now. I was just in a habit of doing that before. Even if it was redundant

Can I pick your brain a little bit?
I had an odd thing happen to me......I rooted and went all delete-happy and deleted a bunch of stuff from system/app without making a nandroid backup...of course stuff stopped working properly, so I downloaded the stock rom rooted and flashed that (with wiping data, cache, and dalvik---even though wiping cache and davlik is unncessary as you explained), but those files I deleted were still missing
The only way I got them back was to do what is listed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1904099) and start all over from a non rooted state
Any idea why? If I would have flashed the rooted stock ROM, wouldn't it have wiped my /system too?
PS: I'm reading your tips thread now....just got off work

You said you downloaded the 'stock rom rooted'. Where did you get that? Also as I explained in my tips thread, sometimes CWM does not wipe things as cleanly as it should. I cannot explain why. In those circumstances I flash my format zip from my tips thread. I suspect that that rom you said you downloaded that you said was rooted was not set up to format the /system.
Also that link you quoted does not work so I can't look at that page.

You flashed Samsung roms to your Nook Color? This is a Nook Color forum. All the stuff I have been telling you applies to the Nook Color and the CWM built for the Nook Color. Are you on another device?

LOL, well I learned something here. If users start asking questions that do not quite jib with having a Nook Color, I had better ask more questions before I start spouting stuff. I am really glad I added assert statements to my zips to make sure the user is on a Nook Color before the flash will attempt to install. It could have been a real disaster for you if you had tried to flash my format partitions zip on your SGIII and it was allowed to install. I am going to make sure I have that assert statement in every zip I make, just to protect users.
But most of what I told you about CWM should apply to the SGIII version of CWM.

So wipe and format are the same?
Why do they have them listed separately in the first place in CWM if they do the same thing?
Thanks.

True. Even though I got off topic for the sgsiii thing most of my questions are universal to all devices

Hello,
I plan on selling my device and I've left a completely new unused ROM toI restore then sell it.
Can I wipe the internal memory and then restore from SD card without having any issues? I've reset the device but folders and files still remain.
Any advice?
Thanks

yes, you can perform a full wipe in cwm (factory reset, cache, dalvik, /data, /system) and then flash whatever rom from your micro sd.
Does the same work for twrp? Haven't clean flashed since I got this and would like to 'clean up' abit

technically it should but i've seen users on various versions of twrp having issues after wiping data. i dont use twrp so i'm not familiar with version is running smoothest. the older ones seem to work best.
here's 2.5.0.2: http://www.mediafire.com/?4519q4rgg34f77g
and 2.5.0.3: http://www.mediafire.com/?41mdflr1e6u3051
So the Nexus 5 was released so it is time to hand over my nexus 4 to my little brother.
I'm running CM 10.1.3 with franco kernel, and I was wondering is there a difference between going into Settings -> Back & reset -> Factory data reset and going into CWM recovery and wiping data there?
I've done the CWM wipe but what I want this time around is to wipe all my files (music, photos, videos etc.) but keep the ROM as CM.
So how should I approach this wiping process? Thanks!
No, but if you want to wipe userdata (music/photos/etc) you need to select to wipe /data/media as well (this is located in the 'mount' menu of CWM.
Why don't you do him a favor and update it to 4.4 first.
Well I guess I'll revert to stock and wait for the 4.4 ota update. Seems like that would be the better route right?

settings/backup and reset/ factory reset data. will erase all data on phone, then you can do what you like with OS afterwards, you could format sdcard partition in CWM

if you go in to recovery and go to mounts and storage, format the /sdcard
I have updated my phone to latest official 5.0.1 and have also installed the 355 mb update that came after the main lollipop update Have wiped cached and data and done a clean install yet i still have some of the lolipop bugs..They are as follows:
1. homescreen Wallpaper gets set to default wallpaper randomly.
2. Keyboard crashes few times in a day.
3. Using snapchat and other apps continuously causes the phone to reboot
4. Overheating...phone gets heated like mad.
I noticed most of this happens when I am on 3g and on wifi everything works smooth.
my phone is rooted. Please let me know if there are tweaks or apps that i can install to fix these bugs. Thanks so much!

I think you should try some custom roms which base on android 5.0.1 for S4, suggest Omega Rom v28 .
This will fix those bugs easily
hey thankss! Can i install custom rom n retain my data or i will hv to wipe the data???

Start with a clean device. Thus wipe your data.
It's not needed to wipe your internal storage. But make sure to wipe /system, /cache en /data (without internal storage).
Hey thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how to wipe data without wiping internal storage ?? Generally when i wipe data or do a factory reset it wipes everything.

Use custom recovery like TWRP.
