Unless you wanna keep all those unnecessary temporary files, no it's not a bad thing to do. Just be careful not to wipe your dalvik in recovery too often as it may cause the system to rebuild it's cache upon every reboot and that means you will receive that annoying "Android is upgrading" window on every boot up

Yes. However I was referring to the fact that if too many dalvik cache wipes are performed, especially when flashing 3rd part kernels or mods, it can potentially reach a point where the system forces a rebuild in it's cache upon EVERY reboot no matter if you stopped wiping. I along with others I know have been through it. very annoying.

Every device is different so there's really no way in telling but it does happen sooner when flashing various kernels or mods, usually those that claim will boost the phones performance and/or speed. In my case it tends to happen between 3-5 wipes, which is why I try to avoid performance cache wipes as much as possible except when switching between ROMs. I always do a FULL wipe

i think that you are very mistaken. wiping your cache or dalvik does not cause this. what i think is that you had something happen to your device, you dont know what it is, so you blame wiping cache and dalvik often. funny thing is, i ran across someone recently whos dalvik rebuilt after every reboot. after lots of searching, it turned out that his sound mod/app was doing it. after getting rid of it, all was fine.

Maybe I am, maybe not. Everything I mentioned was based off my own experiences as well as others who have addressed this to me. As far as the sound mod goes, If you read my earlier post I did also mention that it could be caused by various mods or kernels, not all but some. never got around to actually removing a mod and then seeing if it fixed the issue so with all said and done, I appreciate the honesty and thank you for clearing this up for me.

a few years back, on much older devices, some kernel/rom/mod developers would "cheat", by making their roms/kernels/mods seem like things were sped up, by including scripts to delete the dalvik on every reboot. things feel faster on the first boot after the dalvik gets rebuilt.

Some of you may already know this, however I see it popping up more and more about low sound volume on CM7 with DT apps2sd.
I have tried to reply to people and tell them a fix, however if this does not apply to you no need to continue reading.
If you get a low notification, sms, email, music volume and the CM7 db settings do not work either you must reboot into recovery and clear your cache and dalvik cache, then reboot again and your problem will be solved.
This is the work around I have been using for a while now and it must be done everytime you reboot. Sadly.
If you want to flash a kernel, clear your caches first, then flash, then reboot.
Hope this helps some people.

And use what hater? The old version that doesn't support data2sd when all the old N1's are crippled for space? Christ I picked up a Galaxy S 4G then took it back, 1GB internal space no true apps2sd or data2sd yet?
I personally am thankful someone is continuing DT's work, Cyan sure has abandoned us.

I was only trying to provide a work around for the people who like to use the DT apps2sd.
If you don't use it then you don't use it. Simple as that. However the N1 is crippled with space.

For the most part, the low volume appears to be more specific to the beta release of DT. I've managed to avoid the issue by using the latest stable version. Doesn't work for everyone, but it does work for most. I currently run 217 apps, with 60+ Meg of free space, and zero volume problems... I'm certainly not a DT hater...
I thought some people may wish to know that there is an alternative to wiping cache and rebooting on a daily basis?

You don't have to reboot on a daily basis only when you reboot.
And some of us like flashing betas and living on the edge.

I wouldnt think so the flashaholics and devs flash more than once in a day sometimes, when i was trying different things with Supreme, i would format system/data/cache and wipe dalvik sometimes 3 times a day and reflash because i had an error

its perfectly fine, i do it all the time testing different things on my transform and ive never had a problem from factory resetting it. hoping to be able to be a flashaholic again soon with the shift
I suppose it could over the long run. I think it would take quite a while. Because I've been doing full wipes, and factory resets. Testing stuff, reflashing because of errors, or just dev stuff. For a while now, zero adverse effects.
There have been debates about this in every forum on XDA I'm pretty sure haha. The general consensus from what I've read is this. NAND memory does have a lifespan, that much is a fact. It is most people's opinion, however, that even above average flashaholics will not reach this lifespan in the couple of years they have their phone.

Factory wipes you /data and /cache which data is where your apps and random user stuff is stored, your cache is your cache... Your dalvik from what I understand is what makes android android, that's where all your widgets and what not reside, /system wipes your system files and formats it, of you wipe that you need to flash another rom cuz your phone won't boot other wise... If i have anything wrong please correct me, but ya

I press delete, but they are still there and wont go away! I tried reflashing but it didn't work! So any help will be appreciated. I will attach a photo.

I think this has to do with displaying precise date and time settings in the messaging app. Try changing that.
Also try a wipe of cache and dalvik in recovery, and clearing data for the messaging app in apps settings.

I wiped cache and dalvik, and battery stats (on accident lol) and I cleared the app data from manage applications. Any other ideas? I can live with it, just gets a little annoying.

December 31, 1969 is the oldest date the phone's hardware can recognize. This date gets slapped onto messaging threads that A) have no date or B) have a corrupted date. It can also happen if Android loses it's ability to tell time. Sometimes these weird threads appear when you use cloud texting services, like CloudTXT, DeskSMS, Airdroid (which does way more than cloud texting, check that app out).. You really can't "fix" them, but if all your threads, new and old, have this date being slapped on to them then you should try wiping cache/dalvik or remove a cloud texting app if you're using one. Also check Date and Time in Android settings to see if it is screwed up there as well.

Hey guys, long time rooted/android user here, I am about to get my Nexus 7 on Monday, and I just had a couple of questions. First, since there is no external storage, when you wipe the device to flash different ROMS, does it wipe EVERYTHING? Like, say I have 250mb's of downloaded data for a game...idk say, Dungeon Defenders, I know that when you typically wipe a device, it wipes everything, but will it still wipe that data? Basically, what I am trying to say is, after each wipe/install, will I have to redownload all of that extra data from the game again? That seems like a super big pain in the ass. Hopefully that isn't the case because I don't want to spend 3 hours redownloading data for games after each new flash lol
No. When you unlock for the first time, it cleans out everything... so do that asap before getting cozy.
CWM is designed to leave your storage folder alone. So wiping and flashing won't touch anything saved.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. The first thing I do when I get a new android device is root it haha. I have heard that you shouldn't use the toolkit with the device though, is that true?
No, at leat in cwm, it wipes everything not in the sdcard partition, so if you keep any nandroids, or app data in that partition, you'll be fine

The toolkits work fine most of the time. Its just always good to learn how to do things through commands in case the toolkits, or anything regarding your nexus has an issue

Yeah I understand. I know my way around ADB so honestly for me, it is whatever way is fastest and gives me the least heartburn. I have heard that users start to have issues after the first day with the device, so I will hold off for a day before I root it, just to be sure
When I clear my cache and dalvik and reboot and get the "Android is updating " notification... It says I have like 315 apps, and that seems extremely high because I barely have anything other than a handful of apps.
I'm running the FreeGS4 rom, and other that 10 apps it is bare bones

you have to remember that absolutly everything on your phone is an app or in some way has an app attached to it. granted 315 is excessive but im wondering if something isnt mabey a lil off and its picking up on all apks in the phone (just a guess) have you tried any other roms to see if it does it?
Happened to me. Might be a issue with the recovery not wiping it correctly.
It goes through every app, including system apps, and rebuilds the cache. It's normal.
