[Q] Stutter in games - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have just upgraded from a Nexus S to a Nexus 4.
I always played with a free game, "Scopa" of Whatwapp. In the Nexus S, it sometimes stutters... but this is reasonable with such hardware.
However, I have tried it in my Nexus 4 now...and it stutters there too. Maybe more than with the Nexus S...
How could this be possible? This game should not be heavy...
I tried with Antutu to check the performance...and it gave me a score of about 17300, which seems correct/good.
It is noteworthy that I have seen that game playing very smooth with some low-end devices (e.g. Samsung Galaxy Next or Galaxy Pocket).
Any suggestion? Can someone of you try with the same game? May be an issue of that game?
May be a problem of resolution?
Thank you

it's more than likely a background app causing the problems.
Have you closed everything in the android JB task manager?#

App must not be optimized well itself , or for the phone..
I play about every main Game title.. Never get a stutter/lagg

I have just tried Temple Run 2 and it plays smooth. Can you please try that game?
Just to be sure it is a game-related problem.
Thank you

Try which game ?
But yes I'll give it a go for yea Edit: downloading now

What task manager , the nexus does not have one....
Nexus⁴

I've encountered a similar issue, any help would be much appreciated.

It definitely has lagg on the scopa game.
So it's the game not being optimized very well.

Temple Run original does the same.....It's the crappy governor settings.
Set on demand with these settings....
down_differential 30
up_threshold 70
Smooths everything out including OS and is great on battery.

Ok, I currently have everything stock and cannot change anything.
Btw, I'm going to root the device, but I'll keep stock rom for now.
Which tool to you suggest me to change governor settings?
In my old Nexus S I use NSTools.
Thanks
EDIT: I have just flashed CM10.1 M3 .. lol ... but in the performance settings there are not those settings.
Can you suggest me another kernel (with a related tool) to flash?
Thank you

Use any file explorer with root and write access, es file explore for example can but you have to enable write access in its settings.
Make sure your governor is set to 'ondemand' then navigate to sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand and change the 2 settings I mentioned in my last post using your file explorer.
If you like the settings you can make an init.d script to set them at each boot up.

I'm using a stock/aosp based ROM and kernel.(prime runner+mottley)
I've never used a cm based one before; I guess cm is setup differently... Maybe try sys/.............cpu/cpu0 see if there's an cpufreq/ondemand folder there.. If there is I'm not sure if it would apply to all cores anyway.
Edit... Just remembered, it might be 'system tuner' app that creates the folder there.

You guys should check out this script V6 SuperCharger !! HTK & BulletProof Launchers!
I'm not sure that many of you know about this script... I recently ran into it.
XDA Thread Link. It's called V6 Supercharger. If you wanna read all the nitty gritty go for it. I'll just tell you what to do for those that just wanna jump to it. It is developed for the Milestone, but memory configuration works about same.
Get this file right here and rename it so as to remove the .txt extension (it was added to allow upload on XDA).
Now move that file into your SD card.
Open up [or first download if needed] Script Manager.
Run the script that you have in your SD card, and be SURE to check 'Run as Root' as WELL as 'Run at Boot'.
When the prompt comes you can read the different presets there are. However, I strongly suggest going with just typing 2 and press enter. It will fix your current memory groupings and put your default launcher as priority 0 with apps and stuff at 2 [meh not exact but something like that].
Then it will tell you to reboot after all the scrolling of text. Do, so. I swear I don't ever get a single lag spike anymore.
THANKS zeppelinrox
(I had nothing to do with this script, just referring you guys to it).
This sounds pretty awesome, has anyone successfully tried it on the EVO, and does it truly make a difference?

I wonder if this will fix the launcher lag on Virus ROM B .1.1 someone try it out and post back results.
Yeah, I'm interested in the Launcher part, because regardless of Android version or rom, ADW and LP always freeze on me whenever I restart the phone.
It typically fixes itself after a force close so it's a not a huge issue, but it'd be nice to get rid of it.

not sure but my miks 4.6.2 launcher seems to stall and lag since doing this :/
and its telling me it can't reboot my phone i had to do it manually .. dont think some of the settings took or something
Messed up my stuff a bit. Had to undo. Oh well.
End of line.
Although sense seems to be smooth on the kingdom port after running this script my apps seem to be really laggy. Like the Xda app, when I'm scrolling it studers a lot. I'm pretty sure it had a little lag before running the script but i don't believe it was no where near as bad as it is now. Is there any way of undoing it without reflashing the ROM? Thanks.

Running CM7 Stable. Seemed to increase speed/smoothness slightly, but may be more noticeable on Sense.
I uninstalled Autokiller before executing.

are you sure you checked off 'Run as Root?
read throught the OOM (out of memory) mappings within the script and try a different memory range. I would say try option 1 or 3 then... But there are 3 others with less aggressive groupings.
Hey...when does this have to be run again?
Obviously not after reboots, after wipes??, after flashing??
How do U check that it is in place?

Andromadus beta 5 ideas

I like andromadus a lot. its the best rom ive ever had but i think i have some ideas for the next versions of it:
-themes, i would love a sense 4 or touchwiz or even a iOS theme
-more processor speed options, i mostly onderclock my Android. but there should be more "low speeds" options, like 600mhz.
-USB options, like the internet USB options in android 2.3x
-Beats Audio, maybe?
-The old music player, this one is not as easy as the one in beta 3
-Gmail update? it says everytime at opening that it hasn't been synced
-games, temple run is always buggy. Fix maybe?
-when at lockscreen, and then holding the lock button, you can still make screenshots or shutdown or phone, happend to me 2 times. fix that please
i will have more but this is it for now. what do you think?

last thing you said: it has always been like that.
themes pretty much difficult and there are cyano theme you can use
they're trying, I think, to keep the rom as much similar as possible to stock/cyano ics and and to add new features when they may be useful, but not to completely change it. Beats audio: it's mostly for sense roms, you can flash a zip if you want it. they can't update gmail themselves, google should.

AAB4 supports theme. I think the place you should look at is the market. In case you really want sense 4, there're Sense 4 ROMs.

I think Apollo is way better, it runs smoother, faster and plays more file types. The old one was really crappy. I have no idea why you would prefer that one over Apollo.

This is a known issue, I can't recall what causes this but it is solved by wiping the cache/gmail cache. Go to account & sync to check if the email sync is actually checked. Not AAB4's fault though.
Overall, I think a lot of things you ask for you can get it if you do some extra work instead of asking the dev to do some more work.

sense 4 rom does not have working camera's and camcorders.
Apollo is more laggy than the old one for me
Im a noob at denvelop. and im not gonna customize this rom because i can let my HTC crash very easy. and i like this thing
This is pointless, honestly. Some people would like these changes, some wouldn't. They can't take a stock experience and change it drastically just for you, and if you must, please PM them your "Sense based" ideas.
Not sure on your other points but have to agree about Apollo. Not sure how anyone with a Desire Z would prefer that over the old music player when it does so much in Portrait rather than landscape....
Lol I made a sense 4 themed andromadus rom in the dev section. Just made it today haha

I dislike how most CPU governors start slow and build up after wake. If the wake speed isn't high enough moving the lock circle on the lock screen seems very laggy and not fluid.
Music player is so very easy to change. If we are talking about custom roms, you can easily delete .apk files in /system/app because you have root access. I do this to ensure only my favorite browser is always used for instance.
I wish known issues like Temple Run crashes, camera focus is off, 3g doesn't always recover after wifi signal dropped were mentioned on the 1st post as "not working". I believe that post is misleading otherwise. Perhaps his 2nd reserve post could be used for a list of "issues" to be resolved.

Which ones are you thinking of? To my knowledge, all the ICS roms released use kernels that default to the smartassV2 governor. SmartassV2 automatically hits an ideal wake frequency immediately after turning the screen on (768mhz in Andromadus). From there it will ramp up or down appropriately.

Thats hurt Thanks anyway
I have a synaptics touch and I also have lag.
That YouTube video is useless because it's obvious that if you don't have lag with the screen on, it not simply locking the screen that it will get lagged.
As far as I know it's been like this forever and there are several topics discussing this.
If the phone enters deep sleep, sometimes the touch events will lag a lot and it seems to stop detecting multi touch points. Sometimes locking and unlocking seems to avoid that problem.
I have a PIN unlock and this really bugs me but it's been like this forever, so I take it as a consequence of owning budget phones.

Games running very badly

:crying:
I am having problems with games running very slowly, it seems the more simple the graphics are the worse it is
Eg "Clear Vision" runs really badly as do a lot of the games from the latest Humble Bundle but gfx intensive games like Shadowgun seem to run fine!!
Anyone got any ideas?
Define "running badly". Display corruption? Tearing? Banding? Lag? Fuzzy?
The only thing I've had is fuzziness. Some apps don't scale well to our extremely high resolution.

Many Android games are yet to properly handle the N10's resolution, or badly optimized anyways, the HW can handle everything, the problem lies at the developers,.

Nexus 4 Prob.

Hello Guys i need some help here, im using Google* rom and i havent changed anything in the phone, i downloaded some games and apps, i just bought a nexus 4 in india and when i swipe through homescreen i occationally get lag and i get lag in app menu and widgets menu when swiping. when i play Temple Run 2 and subway surfer ( all updated to new version ) i get slight lag when playing the two games and at 37-40*C and the lag increases in temple run 2 when the temperature increases from 37*C - 40*C, can i know if this is normal?, anyone notice this?, i thought Adreno 320 was a great GPU which can play any games without lag and was in par( or Greater ) with/than iphone 5, but it cant withstand Temple Run 2?! im disappointed or is my Nexus 4 a defective one? or i gotta download a custom rom to resolve this problem? please help me.... :'(. and by mistake i was kept clicking the model number of the phone and i activated developers version by mistake, is there any way to disable it? i dont know what is developers version by the way .., just to avoid trouble :/

Enabling Developer options doesn`t cause lag or anything and gives you the choice to enable some options like usb debugging etc etc. I run Temple Run 2 too and xperience no lag at all and i have about 160 apps installed. Maybe too many heavy apps like Facebook or similar apps running in the background? And the temperatures are quite normal when gaming. Install BetterBatteryStatts for monitoring specific apps behaviour.

i only have like less than 15 apps installed, using the same rom included with the phone during purchase, i always clear background apps and recent apps often. and what are the normal temperatures for nexus 4? maybe the google* rom not very powerfull? i get lag on my homescreen, app section and widget section too occasionally.. :/

I would do a data factory reset in settings/backup and restore if i we`re you. I realy don`t xperience any lags and i`am on stock 4.2.2 also. I guess you installed the 4.2.2 OTA and it is advised to factory reset afterwards to avoid conflicts.

i hear so many complaints about those two games and laginess, that i dont think that its the phones fault. im gonna chalk it up to crappy coding in those games.
reading some of the comments in the play store for those games, also makes me think its the games issue.

i use trinity kernel. there isnt even a thought of lag on my phone(i dont play those two games, but i do have other games that i play). even though im a friend of francisco, franco kernel dev, and he makes a good kernel, im still a trinity user/and official teammate/tester

even with all stock, it shouldnt lag like that. what governor/scheduler do you use?
kernels control most everything about your phone(like the brains kinda), they also connect the hardware to the software.

I think the factory reset will wipe both your app data and the apps. That's why it's called a "factory reset". You need apps like Titanium Backup to make backups for your apps.
I'm not running stock rom now, but the lags you experienced are absolutely abnormal. I would also do a reset as Gee2012 said.

ok. then you dont need to consider kernels. do you reboot your device often? if not, one every few days is good. a factory reset might help too.
okay ill factory reset then

the thing that i dont like about being completely stock is that real maintenance is hard to do, like wiping tge dalvik cache(that would speed things up), or changing the kernel dor one that has been optimized. so, a factory reset would be the option for a completely stock phone.
okay
I have both games, and it does not lag on stock rom/ stock kernel. As for temps, I'm not too sure. If after wiping it completely and the problem is still there, then there might be an issue with the phone.

the game does not lag fully but it lags a bit here and there, is that normal?

For temple run 2, if I remember correctly it had little lags so it may just be the game. I'm currently playing temple run OZ and playing it on high graphics with no lag. If you feel your phone gets a bit warm, def look into UV it helps cools down the phone.
