Hammer and Knife test for HTC One - One (M7) General

**New knife+hammer test
Added April 26th:

How come nobody tries these tests with sandpaper?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

we know a screwdriver won't scratch it. I support ^, try sand paper!

I dropped my One one time from about 1 foot above the ground while sleeping. Woke up, looked at the screen and there was tiny scratch on the device. So while a screwdriver might not scratch the device be careful of wood

*sigh*, not this again...
All these materials used in the test, hammers, nails, etc. etc, are softer than sand.
Test it against a single grain of sand, and I'll be surprised if it doesn't scratch.
The only screen that doesn't scratch is my watch, which is made of sapphire crystal. Which is what they're working on at the moment. Can't wait.

Who carry sandpaper with them in their pocket or bag?

Funny how a carpenter could afford to buy an HTC One but not his own toolbox huh?

The common flaw that these videos have is that they fail to show on the camera the micro scratches which show up from using those kind of sharps objects. Try zooming in with the camera and making it reflect at the angle where those kind of scratches can show!

Gorilla glass my arse

My phone has 3 scratches on it. I can't see 2 unless I really look, so they don't bother me, but the 3rd one is blatanly there. I thought gorilla glass was supposed to be ale to handle everyday things, like a pocket? My hero has never got a visible scratch while the screen is on, even after I dropped it in the subway tracks (the buttons got peeled off though lol). Wats the deal

Who puts their new 400 dollar phone into their pocket with loose change, keys and other abrasive things? If you want to be so reckless with it, then get a screen protector. I have mine cozy in a delicious leather case when I am traveling and the screen is absolutely flawless. I dont expect a screen to survive having metal objects jabbed into it with pressure, no matter what animal they name the glass after.

I don't know. I think a KingKong glass would definitely be able to withstand a tiny little sharp puny key. C'mon now

Who said he had anything sharp, metal, or otherwise in his pocket. I suggest you reread the OP. You don't get to make things up so that your argument seems to make sense. That's what kids do in elementary school. I keep my Epic in my pocket and don't have a scratch anywhere on it. Now, I suppose by your (flawed) reasoning the Epic is impervious to "loose change, keys and other abrasive things."
Well this thread certainly has got off on the wrong foot lol, ya I have a few tiny scratches on my screen as well, not super noticeable but I know they are from being in my pocket with change and pens. Not a big deal as long as they are small, but it definitely made me consider a screen protector and a new pocket arrangement.

FWIW I regularly make it a point to purposefully try and scratch my display with my keys to prove to people how tough the glass really is and I still have no scratches.. not even hairline ones that require the right light/angle to see.

Heres a qoute from edge767 on android central
Sapphire will only scratch if you scratch it with an object that is higher on the Mohs Hardness Scale (or if you take a softer object put push the atoms beyond their elasticity and plasticity into failure) like a metal hammer used with force.
There are few common objects you would normally have in your pocket that is harder than glass (which is 6 to 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale). Unless you walk around with a pocket full of topaz, sapphires, and diamonds, you should be okay.
The real danger is dust and small grains of sand that can contain quartz (which, at 6 to 7 can be harder than your glass) that gets between your finger and the glass. That is where most scratches will come from, not from keys

There's a few flaws with your ASSumptions.
1)don't ASSume that just because YOU paid $400 for a phone, everyone does.
2)I NEVER have my phone in a pocket with ANYTHING else. A habit from my blackberry days. So again, don't ASSume that just because YOU have your phone rubbin up against metallic objects, everyone does.
3)why should I have to waste money on a leather case when gorilla glass is supposed to be able to handle the little things?
The statement about the dust particles made more sense, but I don't think I've touched nor been near quartz, and if I have, it couldn't have been enough to weaken the glass to thepoint of a clearly visible scratch on the screen

Lol when I was buying the phone, the best buy lady was asking me if I wanted a screen protector and I told her no cuz I'm finally gonna have a phone with gorilla glass, but we see how that ended up.
My conclusion is that gorilla glass is ass and that tft coating or whatever htc put on the hero to protect against smudges is also able to withstand scratches easier lol

Cleaning your baby?

Am I the only one that will take the time to routinely clean there incredible? I have a screen protector and a case on my phone. And when I have down time ill take the case off and wipe it all down with 95% alcohol wipes, and use compressed nitrogen (from work) and lightly blow all the fuzz and dust off it. Making sure not to blow on the speakers of course.
Just was wondering what you guys do to keep it clean.

yeah the speakers have a paper cone and could blow out if you do a direct hit. for me i can adjust how much nitrogen is coming out of hose. just don't get it to close.
I got a couple of those monster screen cleaner kits that I got from work a couple of years ago that I use. Monster forgot to drill holes in the spray bottles so we were to to throw the defective ones away. The spray and the microfiber cloth work wonders cleaning the screen and the silicon parts of the case that get dusty. At retail of $20 a kit, its not worth it but if you can get it for less then I highly recommend it. Plus you can use it to clean all other plastic gadgets guilt free

Every once in a while I'll take off the back and dust it out. Mainly the camera lens cover, I'm always getting a ton of dust under it. I don't have a screen protector or a case and it is still in great condition. Can't say the same for the back of my iPod though, stupid chrome.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I usually walk into home depot twice a month and use the tool rentals air compressor to blow out the accumulated dust from the rear cover.
Occasionally i'll make the mucrofiber cloth damp, just enough to get the

If there are any fibers or lint on the speaker screen you can use a small strip of Scotch tape and lay it GENTLY over the speaker screen to remove. Works wonders but do not press on!

I don't see why not. It's just a polish. You use a little at a time with a microfiber cloth until you are satisfied with the look. If I ever scratch my screen I will definitely try it. There are other options out there but the Maguires worked well and is readily available.

That is a plastic polish. We have glass, and not just glass, but super hardened glass called gorilla glass. I don't think that headlight polish would do anything.

Gorilla glass isn't scratch proof, just scratch RESISTANT, so scratches can still appear.

Yeah, the idea definitely has potential, and kudos to you for having the guts to pull it off, but this isnt a diy job if you want perfecfion. You need proper equipent and training. Someone who's decent with an airbrush could do wonders with this thing. Luckily i know a guy.
Yeah. An evenly sanded, then evenly sprayed cover can look just as good, if not better, than the original I imagine. I do want to thank you for giving me that idea. I might actually try something like this in that beautiful metallic orange color I often see on newer Nissan vehicles.

yea its not the best colour and finish. some plastics are more or less porous. Some will not 'take' paint well at all, so however well it is done, it will chip and peel. I was interested in seeing how well a properly keyed surface would take the paint. The Moto G back case seems to take the paint very well, with no need for a primer.
Issues:
The colours I had available weren't great, hence the strange green bowling ball look
The paint does not dry very hard (I don't have a heat lamp to fast dry it hard)
The finish isn't very even (brush as no space here to spray)

If I had:
A heat lamp:

You could easily get an extremely good finish and it would be tough and durable too. None of these items are expensive and anyone could do it, but you do need a good workspace or you will get dust sticking while drying etc etc..
Easier to buy a new back, but if you want a custom colour this is the only option..
nice work mate
i think this would have looked better with flat/matte paint instead of gloss. He's got the right idea though, this is a cheap easy way to customize your back cover:good:
Ugly, very ugly.
Not sure why you did it. Maybe drunk, on new years eve.

Sand off the oleophobic coating then apply a couple of coats of enamel model paints. Time will tell how durable it is once it hardens but it seems to bond very well with the plastic back cover! Photo attached

Gawd it looks disgusting, but 10/10 for self customisation!!
Hope you haven't done the frame as well!!
it looks good, but I would like more than you were painting with airbrush not it? some graffiti or something.
I've once bought a airbrushed back door inspired by Keith Haring's timeless art for a Nokia 6150 and to be honest I'd like to have a custom back door like that for my Moto G. I enjoyed viewing your custom work and hope that others will follow.
nice job mate, I agree spray painting needs some time and is not as easy as it seems.
did it on my gnex 2-3 times

I agree it doesn't look that great, but that might also be from the fuzzy picture of it. But, really, stop tearing they guy down. He did something to his case that he wanted to do. It's his to do with what he wants. He was proud enough of it to show us on the forum, so please don't tear him down.
I did like the comment about the bowling ball though. Thought that was funny.
