I'm not trying to sound stupid but is there not a way to "up" the camera on the Atrix to an 8MP or so? The reason I even asked is that I am just joining you "elite" group of Atrix owners by stepping up from an XT711. Now before I get too flamed, the XT is really a great handset, or could have been if it hadn't been abandoned by Motorola. I have an XT711 with a xenon flash and 8mp camera that takes OUTSTANDING photos and beautiful HD video, I also bought my wife its little brother, the XT701 that has a 5mp camera. After doing alot of searching, I found a Chinese web site that had a flash file that I used to flash her phone and change her camera to 8mp also, and it worked beautifully! Her camera went from good pictures to great pictures and it was just a simple flash file. Now that my wife and I are both upgrading to the Atrix because of no future support, I am just wondering if this method could be used for the Atrix as well or if anyone has thought about or tried it. I dont know how they changed it in the file, and if I wasn't such a rookie, I would look in it and see cause I still have the zip file, but I wouldn't even know what I was looking at if I opened it. I am sure the camera should be similar to the "X" phone with its 8mp, and from the looks of it, it might actually be the same camera as the newly China released XT882, which is almost the same as the Atrix (actually maybe better with its dual sims) but its camera is sitting at 8mp, not 5mp. Well since I am just a noob, I figured I would at least ask if it had been thought of or tried because I know from my XT phones that those 3 little megapixels can make a very nice difference in your pictures and alot of people including myself would love to have it. Why couldn't it work if the camera was capable? Just curious and hopeful. Thanks in advance!
I can tell you that the difference between 5MP and 8MP is not important, especially on a camera phone that is not designed to print large resolution images in the first place.
You can't increase the megapixels by flashing software onto a phone. Most likely the update adjusted the white balance, aperture, focus, and color contrasts to make the image more appealing. The iPhone has already proven that a lower MP camera can easily beat-out a higher MP if the software and lens is good enough.
I don't know of any current projects related to the Atrix 4G camera software. However, there many camera apps that offer filters and other software related changes to your photos. I suggest checking all of the modes the Atrix 4G offers and then see if any of the 3rd party apps add additional features.
Are you sure that the software cannot be limiting the camera to 5mp? I only ask because I don't know, not because I don't believe. I just read the site where the XT701 upgrade is and it says the software is limiting the camera. I just thought possibly the Atrix could be as well. Here is the translated page:
http://translate.google.com/transla...0/08/08/update_xt701_carema_to_8mpix/&act=url
Well it was at least worth asking. Hopefully with the new GB update coming up, the camera will become more like what I am used to. Thanks!

I would take that with a grain of salt since the retail version hasn't been released yet.
Funny fact: HOX uses samsung's image sensor (iirc, it's the same one used in GS2 and GS3 uses something else)
The ONE X is the winner hands down! Can I please have a phone with the design, camera and screen of the ONE X and the rest of the specs from the GS3?

Maybe so but thats "only" the BSI sensor if I'm correct? The HOX has a 8 mp BSI sensor and so does the s3 if Im correct?
The HOX furhermore has an dedicated imagechip, does the SGS3 come with this? Is that something "official" yet?
In due time we will see. But I THINK the HOX will be hard to beat in this area atleast
Damit. HTC One X has much better photos. I guess I will wait no more. Bye bye good old sgs2. I guess HTC is new king!

Imho the wider aperture of the HOX is really paying off.
Let the straw grasping begin.....

The One X is marketed as having the best camera hardware. The SGS3 is marketed as an all around device.
If u want good photos, go One X. For everything else SGS3

They both do but there is literally zero information about the sensor being used in the s3. I think someone already matched up the model number for the S2 camera sensor to the HOX
What does the dedicated imagechip do?

I'm not sure! But google gave me this:
HTC’s ImageChip is responsible for most of the things that would traditionally be done on the SoC ISP. 3A (Autofocus, Auto white balance, and Autoexposure), lens correction (geometric and chromatic correction), noise reduction, best shot selection, continuous auto focus, controlling gains on the CMOS sensor, LED flash level decision, region of interest identification (augmented with face detection) and so on. This is all stuff you can verify yourself by taking apart some of the ISP related files - curiously enough internally ImageChip is actually referred to as “rawchip.” This is also the hardware responsible for enabling HTC’s extremely fast image continuous capture and frame grabbing during video capture (HTC Video Pic). It’s somewhat analogous to what Google and TI did with the OMAP4460 on the Galaxy Nexus, except discrete and with a much more ambitious focus.

There's something wrong with those galaxy siii pics. There's way too much noise around any picture of a light. My sii takes better pictures than that. It almost looks like what pictures look like when you still have the protective plastic over the lens!

True..The photos looks worse than SGS2. Also EXIF data missing.
Here's another site where you will get some photo comparison between SGS2 and SGS3 at full resolution and EXIF data.

Theres definitlly something wrong with the SGS3 pictures because the camera on the HTC ONE X is one of the worst 8 mp cameras around.

"Then there's the camera. Once again, HTC is able to deliver one of the best if not the best smartphone camera with the One X. Low light performance in particularly impressive. The new Sense camera UI is a great match for the hardware as well. The ability to take photos while recording a video without a costly mode switch is both innovative and incredibly useful."

HOX has some very good optics. Nobody will argue about that. We know how HOX images look. That's not the point of discussion here. The photos are not 8MP resolution and don't have any metadata.
Compare this to the link I mentioned earlier, do they look like taken with the same device?

I really doubt that the photos appearing on android central are legit. The phone hasnt even gone out for reviews and this guy has it in his pocket on the streets and shoots randomly? rofl
The polish site's photos look way better.

So you disagree with what you said in your 'comprehensive comparison'? If it's so comprehensive, you should include reviews from more than one source, instead of the most critical one you can find
Bull**** I call, not taken with a S3. Samsung murder HTC. Always have, always will. And I'm a One x owner.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen any camera comparisons between the One and One X.
Seeing how many of us are upgrading FROM a One X, I'd love to see some comparison shots. To me, the camera is a huge deciding factor.
Anyone have a a link to such a comparison?
huh? there are already so many. i have seen many comparison in pocketnow, , technobuffalo, engadget, the verge, etc. the one seem to perform well against other android devices, even with iphone BUT, honestly, all the results shows that it still loses to the lumia 920.
I just rechecked those reviews and didn't see a single photo comparison between the One and One X.
use your eyes dude. technobuffalo has a whole article for it(compared with the latest phones), pocketnow even has it on its main page(against droid dna), scroll down for the against lumia 920 one.
TechnoBuffalo shows to me that Lumia 920 lost. Daytime detail is functionally identical, while low light noise is noticeably worse than the One.

I can clearly see that there are some comparition betw mobilephones, but i can't find HTC One X in the list. Where do You see it?
There are no comparisons between the two yet, I'm sure someone here will do one as soon as they get their hands on the phone though.
You have to consider that review sites aren't likely to compare an old generation phone to a new one from the same company. They're interested in comparing the phones that are current, that are considered the best shooters and that people are most likely to buy. I can't see many people, if any buying a One X over the One once the One is out.....Hence review site's wont see the need to compare the two.
very good question but no one compared them for some reason, there is an evident full size quality loss coming from the One X but otherwise the camera improves on everything else
and i just posted this

can't wait to try this camera with reduced sharpness
i freaking love it
to be honest i feel they now completed what they started with the One X camera, the camera is no complete (the bold green lines are the new improved abilities, bold red are compromised features)
- Super Fast shutter, much reduced motion blur
- Super fast focus
- Best HDR in class
- Smart Metering Flash light
- Stunning daylight image enhancements
- Stunning daylight detail from One X reduced on the new ultrapixel camera
- Optical OIS reducing motion blur further
- Excellent noiseless low light
- Excellent macro focus
These leaves only tweaknesses, the color balance is currently too much on the warm side and over exposing bright areas (due to the light loving sensor) which can all be tweaked in software
HTC have rewritten the One X camera app from scratch for the JB update which dramatically enhanced the view finder speed, they also improved many of the focus, white balance and low light issues
i have no doubt they will do the same for the new camera

Thx. Were do I find the "camera thread"?
I've come from the One X which I thought had an outstanding camera, better than anything else on the market. I have two mates with SG3's and they were seriously impressed.
Now I have the one I'm equally impressed. The photos look amazing. I'm not blowing them up to examine pixel quality, as I really dont care but on the phone, facebook, printed out, the quality is great.
Indoor and low light blows my socks off. It's seriously impressive what they've done here. You still get detailed shots without the glare of a flash. Seriously impressive
http://translate.google.com/transla...review/samsung-galaxy-s4-camera.shtml&act=url
The 4MP resolution on the HTC One really suffers compared to all the other test cameras, in outdoor shots, overcast shots (pretty much everything there in Russia), macro shots, indoor shots, etc. I thought the "ultrapixels" would give it an edge in indoor and darker shots. Nope. Its just as grainy/noisy as the GS3, with half the pixels worth of detail. The GS4 seems to be a real substantial upgrade from the GS3. It is much much clearer and far less noisy than the GS3 at night and indoor. It goes from a grainy, overexposed, blurry ghost image (my GS3 does this alot) to a relatively usable, clean, and sharp image.
Some of the links are broken, but you should download the really large MP4 video files as well. I don't know why people keep on saying how SMOOTH the HTC One is with OIS when every video I've seen of it is super shaky. It's classic HTC super shaky. The exposure adjustment is wonk with it randomly getting way brighter for no apparent reason (typical HTC) and the darker areas are always super crushed like the shadows and the dark jacket the guy is wearing (also typical HTC). The GS4 video is far smoother, evenly lit, no crushed details, etc.
It's great that HTC is pushing the ultrapixel thing and bucking the megapixel trend, but they really shouldn't have been the ones leading the charge. Their camera performance has always been subpar in their previous phones and they have no "real" expertise in the field like Sony or Samsung who actually make and sell standalone cameras. Any one of them would have done a better job supersizing the pixels. It was probably pure wishful thinking or some kind of delusion on HTC's part, but the shortcomings should have been very apparent in their testing from the beginning. They could've thought, oh it sucks!, and quickly slapped a 13MP Exmor RS camera on the back instead. But the wishful thinking prevailed. It's kinda like releasing a bad electric car and souring the appeal of owning one, making it harder for future and much better electric cars by better companies to break into the mainstream.
Like many reviews have already said, its not a "bad" camera. It's just not particularly cut out to compete with the best cameras on phones from Samsung, Sony, LG, Nokia, Apple, etc. Not even last year's models.

There are many other reviews out there that say HTC One camera is better (e.g. Engadget, pocketnow, allaboutSymbian etc). I think its pretty stupid to form an opinion based on just one review (that may or may not be biased).
I'm sorry but do not trust that site its a Pro-Samsung site and the owner and chief-editor is on samsungs pay roll so its a miracle if Samsung products come out anything other than favorable, its dubbed for "consultancy work" but we all know real reason.
If you are working for samsung no matter the capacity its dishonest of them to not to be clear and upfront about it when doing product reviews.
Eldar Murtazin is the biggest a$£ blogger of them all who pretends to be a journalist.
btw theres a thread for reviews at the top
actually this review actually seems to have one of the good HTC One cameras (if two sensors are indeed used)
expand the images, the HTC One 4MP images are not bad at all
in macro detail its doing better
Macro example: One vs S4
MP detail: One vs S4, One vs S4
notice the field of view is just miserable on the S4
anyway yes, lets not fool ourselves its a big compromise that HTC made and not everyone would like to eat it (im finding difficulty myself, i love the 8MP camera on my One X)
as for OIS, gsmarena showed very impressive OIS stability tests
So I've been reading multiple articles talking about HTC releasing another variant of the M8 called HTC Eye which is basically just the M8 with an updated front facing camera as well as a 13mp back camera, honestly they should have done this the first time around but I'd like to hear otherwise people's thoughts on this, will you be purchasing the new phone or will you stick with what you have, personally I probably will be switching because I take a lot of pictures and this camera is terrible even with its "ultrapixel" feature.

It was leaked that the device code name M8_eye will have the same hardware as the original except the 13MP Duo Camera. the front facing camera is the same 5MP. Keep in mind that this statement is not 100% accurate or true. if HTC took this route then it might mean that the HTC one M8 is the last phone with Ultra pixels. Sadly i wish if HTC tried to do something for better pictures keeping the Ultra Pixel technology instead of ditching it as it take very good night shots but it seems that people wont appreciate low pixel count and want a higher MP even tho the 4 Ultra Pixel Camera takes overall better shots than the 13MP found on the Desire 816 in terms of color accuracy and lighting ( thanks to @hamdir for comparison) keeping the only issue is zooming. everything will be revealed on the 8th of Oct so lets see what HTC is hiding for us.
But I had also heard that the back camera could still use the ultra pixel technology, I'd this is true it would mean that the camera would be one of the absolute best you can get
Thread closed as this forum is for the m8 only. Other types of phones, if released will get there own forum.
Many thanks,
Ghost
