I tried every possible situation to get the camera to act like a 5MP one but not even close.
I am happy with my HD actually but the fact that it has the 5MP camera made me buy it a week ago rather than getting the TOUCH PRO 2.
Looking at the pictures with 5MP set on, they are 2592x1552 with superfine quality which even does not make 5MP (4 maybe). Pictures with N95 were way better. Is it that hard to implement a good 5Mp camera with such a great device? Was the aim for all the stories about that 5MP camera only commercial ? I feel bad now as deciding which device to buy based on specs became really hard.
I'm a bit disappointent with the camera as well, but:
- Set 'widescreen' to off. Then you get actual 5MP pictures.
- The camera quality in the new custom roms (I use Dutty's 2.1) is slightly better.

Thanks for the link. I have been reading also that the camera quality is almost as good as other 3.2MP HTCs devices which is really disappointing.
On such a small sensor, more megapixels makes the picture worse.
It's the same reason why the best pocket cameras are three year old 6 megapixel models. The new ones are 15megapixel, and are way worse.

I think you are right, maybe we should ignore the fact that cameras of HTC devices with more Mpix are better and focus on other specs like Screen/integrated Keyboard/processor/RAM/ROM.
I understand now why PRO 2 has a 3.2MP camera.
I totally agree with op but also the reasoning responses.
they marketed it as a 5 megapixel and its way below par with everything.
the phone is awesome and I wouldn't trade it with anything right now.
however I would totally sympathise with anyone who uses the camera as a deciding factor upon purchasing.
The camera is not a deciding factor but when you choose between 2 devices with same specs, one with 3.2MP and one with 5MP, you should know that you did not get anything as a plus. You only payed more.
It's only going to get sillier. New models are coming out with 8mp and 12mp, and the pictures they take are awful.
Jeez, even aps-c DSLRs from all manufacturers max out at 10/11mp, because it's counterproductive to have more (and they have sensors 245645363456546x bigger than a mobile).
So in other words, the 3.2MP of new HTC devices camera is better than the 5MP on the HD ?
The quality of the picture quality of the HD is heaps better than the pictures taken from the n95, it's just the shutter is much slower in low light on the HD, that's its weak point.
It will be a matter of time when a firmware upgrade is provided to increase the shutter.

At this sensor size, and with the same lens, 3.2mp will produce better pictures than 5mp.

3.2MP on OLD HTC device is better than the HD in terms of usability, quality is still very very good in ideal conditions.
I find the photos pretty OK in daylight. It is an average 5MP just a little worse than the N95. Just use the default settings.
I had a N95 also. Like you said, the quality of the pictures is not as good as a 2 years 5MP device. That is what i am not getting.

Megapixels are just "dots" 1 megapixel = 1 million dots etc, therefore yes the HD can take a 5 megapixel photo, however, "megapixels" do not necassarily determine picture quality, all sorts of factors make up picture quality, such as: human knowledge and experience, lighting, the quality of the lens and sensor combination, the size of the photodiode(s), the quality of the camera components, the level of sophistication of the imaging processing software, the image file format used to store it, etc. Different sensor and camera designs make different compromises. I have n95 too and find the quality between the two similar, crap! compared to my Nikon 6mp digital camera.
Simply you dont "get it" because perhaps you dont put enough thought or research into things. Im not having a go at you, I just would assume that after 2yrs with a piece of crap N95 you'd know better.

Of course. That's been obvious for years now, same with mainstream cameras (except the dslr market, where image quality actually matters).

Higher Megapixels DO NOT determine picture quality it is merely and simply resolution, even on a high quality digital camera MP has less value than a good quality lens.

You need to provide more information. Have you checked out the connections? do you have a physical connector? Do you have the pinouts or datasheet? I'd expect it to be a difficult task. Even among similar devices the pinouts and connector types change. After establishing the physical connection, you have to work out the communications.
How do I get the data sheet, I Loove the fact that I have a 8 MP Cam but The I phone has a 5 PM thats sarper than mines, Just imagin the 4s Cam. I know how to tak my phone apart if that helps, but Im not sure what other info I need.
5mp being sharper than 8mp does not seem to make sense. have you tried cleaning your camera and/or maybe refocusing it? there is a manual focus adjustment on the camera which is set by the factory. Maybe it is set wrong. Also, there can be buildup on the lens on the inside of the case which is causing blured images.
I doubt replacing a camera with a lower megapixel camera would fix anything. It would actually be more of a hassel than it is worth... locating pinouts, drafting a new connector, manufacturing a new connector, locating or writing new drivers.... these are all required for you to go from the 8mp camera to the 5mp camera. even still, you'd have a lower quality camera.
You really want to look at cleaning or refocusing via the manual camera adjustment on the camera dongle inside the device.
those tips are great tips, and should be followed before any kind of extreme camera swaps.
But with that said, I could see situations where the iphone 4s' camera could be better than an 8mp one. Although more pixels are used to create an image in an 8mp camera, the method of creating the image itself is entirely different. The iphone has a very unique type of setup, especially with the backlit sensor. The difference is especially noticeable in lower light situations. A typical 8mp setup will show more "blue haze" than an iphone 4s, and may be blurry only because the device may "record" more frames knowing there is less than ideal lighting, which allows more room for error for the human taking the photo because they might not hold the device perfectly still for this long. The sensor in the iphone 4s reduces the haze and allows the camera to take a faster photo in darker situations, avoiding potential camera shake. I personally would love to take the iphone 4s's sensor, and put it in the Galaxy Nexus Prime, but actually getting that to work would require a team of developers experienced in the hardware utilized in both devices.
That's what I was talking about. The IPhone 4s camera, but in any case I'm not a developer just good enough to hack and regonize really good hardware. But in this case I'm starting to question if this is more a hardware or software issue.

It's possible that iPhone camera does better pictures, it can be just manufactured of better materials.
Anyway, such replacement is impossible for single man without advanced stuff and deep knowledge about drivers. It isn't a notebook where construction is somewhat standarized and you can just replace LCD screen with one from another model of another producer and it's big probability that it will work, as an example. Every phone manufacturer does create its own unique connectors and it just won't fit to another stuff.

I have a Galaxy S2 i9100 Mobile. Some days ago, I tried to update my mobile's driver with Samsung App. After installing its driver, I found that I must use of Main memory for updating. Now the camera doesn't work, and whenever I click on camera icon, the camera application open but the screen is completely black, and after some seconds this message is displayed on the screen:

The application camera (processcom.sec.android.app.camera) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
I try all ROMS and RESETS but still it doesn't work.

Replacing camera module, possible but not worth it. takes a lot of trial and error so why not just buy a new phone?
5mp sharper than 8mp, possible. a good picture does not rely on megapixels. that's what manufacturers want you to think. The optics are a much important thing.

I'm looking for switching from Lumia 920 to an Android phone with a good camera like the one in 920. I was close to getting a HTC One but I read horrible stories about purple fringing and so dropped that idea. Then I looked at HTC One X, but it seems to be an outdated phone and so dropped that plan too. All my friends have iPhone or Samsung and so I don't want to get them either.
Finally when I read the reviews for G2 it seemed to be the most perfect phone for me as it's said to have a nice camera, 5 inch display, Android and fast. On top of it AT&T has also promised an early free upgrade for G2. But when I read some of the threads here they talk about the camera being too slow and not good for indoor. I also read the thread about the Xdabbeb Mod and it seems promising but some folks in that same thread say that even after updating with that Mod the camera is still not that good.
So here I'm, so confused now knowing if I should get G2 or not. What's your opinion on G2's Camera? Again I'm looking for a decent camera that could take good pictures like my Lumia 920 whether indoor or outdoor. Any help is greatly appreciated.

G2 camera is excellent in my opinion. I never had a problem with it or had to install a modded camera on it. I didn't really use it but when I did the pictures were crisp & clear. I'm running AOSP now and the camera is still performing well. It all depends on what you want to use it for. The mods that you mentioned are great and if you ever have problems with the G2 camera flashing one of them will solve it. :victory:
It's exactly like what you've read. Shots with plenty of lighting are fantastic and stunning. Shots with lower lighting (as in indoors) are terrible with the stock camera--it takes way too long to take a shot after you hit the shutter button, as in 5 seconds sometimes. So if you have a moving target, you will miss the moment, or get a blurry mess.
Plus, the denoising algorithm is terrible. Detail on low light shots get lost and people's faces often look like a watercolor painting and unrealistic. Camera mods like xdabebb's help quite a bit, but still the camera has a lot to be desired.
Coming from the Lumia, you will be VERY disappointed.

yes he will, but compared to other android phones it is one of the best cameras available, for the next 2-3 months or so. there are some pretty saucy rumors about the s5 camera though.
I used to have an HTC One before picking up the LG G2 earlier this month and it had a great camera. Until it started malfunctioning with the purple/blue/pink tint issue. The low light performance was awesome and the audio recording was the best I've had on a phone due to the dual microphones that it had. I haven't really had a chance to test out the G2's camera much but it's been alright so far. Just disappointed in the low light and microphone performance. The G2 does capture a lot more details with more accurate colors in normal conditions because of the higher megapixel count though.

The camera in decent light and with still objects is great. Like others have said, it doesn't do too well in low light conditions or with moving objects. I would expect that with the speed in which the phone takes pictures, that it would do much better with moving objects but you do get a blurry mess. It's a fantastic phone in every other regard, however, the camera could use some improvement.
I love the G2's camera. If you don't think it takes good photos, just look at these. None of these are edited, and straight from the camera. Photobucket reduces the quality a bit as well.
Thanks everyone. So it looks like I can't get pictures as good as the ones I get in my 920 but it seems I can still get decent pictures. I think that should be enough for me. I'm not looking for digital camera quality pictures but just the ability to capture good moments and share it with others. As long as those pictures are not bad I should be ok with that (yes, I'm convincing myself! ).

A mix really, some with the stock LG camera, some using the AOSP camera, and some using the 1.5.0 camera mod.
I am due an upgrade and currently being pushed a S7 by my service provider. But i decided too take a look at the G5.
Its a nice looking phone, fits nicely in your hand as its slightly narrower than the G4.
I have some reservations about the module release button? but only time will tell? The software has more of an iclone feel now? But the camera functionality is what i was most interested in. Looking at what i have seen i would say that LG have dropped the ball on this? Sure theres a little tweek on the main 16mp camera but the option to have dual lense you think they would have come up with something far better than what they are about to deliver.
Sticking one image inside another is nothing new,, they should have delivered a software package to accompany the new camera system that would have made the user more interested in using both lenses.
Once the handset in delivered to me i will post some more, but the bottom line is the modular system might be the only real reason to switch from a G4 to G5.

'Sticking one image inside Another is nothing new' - I'm pretty sure you've missed the point in the dual camera setup. Sure the photo in a photo is a gimmick and 99% of people will never use it. But what about the wide camera lense? You haven't even mentioned that, and that is one of the most important things you could have mentioned.
What sort of software package are you alluding to? You've essentially got the option of using a great 16mpx camera, which will be absolutely amazing if my lg g4 in manual/raw is anything to go by. And in addition you have a super wide angled lense for taking in sweeping vistas.
The only reason someone would upgrade from an s6 to an s7 is incremental hardware updates. So I don't really get your 'bottom line' bit.. The lg g5 has hardware updates like the s7, and an even more unique and innovative design, so actually you have more reason to upgrade.

I'm currently in possession of a G4, I've had a chance to do side by side compare.
What about the amazing software? Well you have a 16mp camera which in my opinion is the same as the G4 just software / processing seems tweaked a little? Its really nice but nothing you will be surprised at if your using a G4. The wide angle lenses you talk about mate is a bit of a letdown, it's true does have a massive angle on it but 8mp is more than able to handle shots with good detail.......................................if it had a bloody bigger sensor!
Theres a lot of noise in the photos and I'm hoping with an update that will be addressed? But I like photos with out the green and red salt and pepper dustings.
So what they could have given us was a smart blur option on backgrounds like the what HTC done with the M8 series and bokeh effects?
That would have been a nice upgrade on the photography from the G4!
How about a native filters and editing tool? Sure there's plenty of third party apps out there, but how about we have an option to shot live with filters rather than post edit?
So no I don't think I missed the point of a dual camera feature? I think LG are the ones who missed it by delivering what looks like good hardware with bare minimum effort on software to showcase the hardware.
I ain't asking for bells or whistles but they have launched a phone that's show case features are modular customization and a DUAL LENSE CAMERA, so why have We not had a bigger bundle installed on the software to help support this?

Realistically who's going to use it?
As I stated already improving what they are offering by things just like you mention would have a far bigger appeal to people who are buying the phone for its features.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto Z2 Force come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So far I'm pretty pissed off with the camera. I recently tested the LG G6, Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 5, and now the Moto Z2 Force which I was hoping would be my dream phone. I owned the Z Force and so far and a bit disappointed. The Camera seems to have potential but the software is terrible, at least on my specific device. The camera is plagued with shutter lag which really seems to take a toll on picture quality. Pro mode is what really upset me with only having the option of 1/4 for shutter speed as the longest time for exposure. I have taken a great deal of pictures to compare with the phones listed above, so far the Huawei Mate 9 has had the best camera in my opinion. Obviously, this is totally objective as views will change per individual. I am by no means a photography expert, but I am always in search of a great camera in a smartphone. The biggest reason for my angry toward the quality of the Z2F camera is the retail cost of the phone, I really thought this would be a camera I would have loved. It seems like I may wait to see how the Essentials Phone turns out and am very curious about the Nokia 8, both in terms of camera. To date I think the use of a dual camera, one being monochrome and the other RGB, is the best implementation. Please let me know if the inconsistent shutter I'm facing is just a problem with my unit or if other's share it as well. I really had my heart/mind set on this phone being able to go toe to toe with others in its price range. Side note, the LG G6 wide angle lens was great for taking pictures, I was surprised that I liked the secondary camera being a wide angle lens as it allowed for unique perspective. I let go of the LG G6 because my father broke his phone and really thought the Z2F would be the phone of my dreams.
Update: Twist for camera sometimes hangs and after some time force closes. This has also happened on 2 occasions when opening camera app, viewfinder is black followed by hang and crash.

Camera shutter speed seems to be a stock app issue mostly. I have CameraZoom FX and that works better at taking the picture quickly. I do expect this to improve as the device matures and some updates get pushed out to it.
That being said, the overall photo quality seems to be pretty good overall. The S8 I am leaving does a better job of handling multiple light levels (like say bright window light in an otherwise dimly lit room), but I do think the Z2F has some promise for sure.
I do agree that I think the shutter lag is very 2015.....so hoping Moto does fix that

I agree with this. The camera app is terrible. I came from the HTC 10 into this phone and the HTC blows it out of the water as far as camera quality goes, and I doubt there's any reason for that as far as the sensor/hardware goes There are also other apps that don't seem to access the front flash on this phone, I.E. Instagram, snapchat, etc. could be a driver issue or something, but motorola needs to get it together with the Android O update.
Has any compared picture quality with Open Camera and the google camera app?

I just noticed that they added two features to the camera app. Object recognition and landmark recognition.They said that they included some bug fixes but did not elaborate. Hopefully they will continue to work on the app and image quality will improve as the phone matures. I think there is potential to improve low light photo's seeing that the black and white sensor should aid low light photography.
So far I am very happy with my photo's. I am a casual user and happy with the images. Realistically I do not think one can expect DSLR quality on a mobile phone. Maybe one day....
I've used several third party apps, and this camera is total trash compared to even my nearly three year old Galaxy S6.. I have to place dramatic Instagram-style filters on everything to hide how crappy this camera is.
I took this picture with full manual mode and it's quite good for me

It's only useful for its optical zoom.
Does anyone have problem with autofocus....? The autofocus on this device is absolutely terrible.
Google Camera port is your friend when it comes to the Z2 Force. Also, Snapseed is a great editor.

So, I'm reading through this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/themes/app-modded-gcam-hdr-t3735494 ; there seems to be no gcam available for Z2, which would be fully functional. Are you saying you solved this issue and have one that works? Perhaps you can post to the thread with your findings if you did?
