[Q] Vertical or Horizontal Mounting in Car ? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to decide where to mount my holder in my vehicle. Depending on what location I choose, the phone will need to be horizontally docked in one location and vertically in another.
Does it matter for functionallity if the phone is mounted horizontally (landscape)?
Will the screen be rotated horizantally when a call comes in? Or would I be reading the phone sideways all the time.
Thanks.

Horizontal is better while using GPS navigation, and if you plan to use your phone at all as a dash cam at all, horizontal is pretty essential, as otherwise you get vertical video which looks like crap.

I actually wasn't planning on having the phone be able to "see" out the windshield. I was going to mount it on the dash near where my HVAC controls are. But, what is the dash cam feature you were referring to?
That sounds like something to consider.

I prefer just the opposite if you are using heads up like most people (map facing the direction of travel) you can see further ahead on the map with the phone mounted vertically.

There are apps like Autoguard Blackbox and DailyRoads voyager that enable you to turn your phone into a dash camera. There's different settings, but chief among them is to allow your phone to record continuously and deleting old recordings as you go along. If the accelerometer in the phone is tripped, say, if another car hits you, that recording will be saved and can either be automatically placed into the cloud or saved on local phone storage. Also works with GPS.
There's a dozen of other features to check out in each:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dailyroads.v&hl=en
I recommend the pro version of AutoGuard Blackbox. It's cool having the dash cam up there in the event of an accident or something cool occurring, and I don't even have to think about it while I use my normal GPS navigation and listening to podcasts while driving.

Thanks for the details. That definitely gives me some new info to think about, and exactly where I plan to mount my mount.
I probably should have guessed there was an app that would do things like this

Poll: Which Cupcake feature are you most waiting for?

Latest Feature List:
1. Settings Page changes (different locales, text inputs).
2.view running, 3rd party apps (task manager without termination)
3. New windows opening/closing animation effect
4. Notepad
5. Global clock
6. extra settings (auto-rotate and such)
7. On screen keyboard
8. Shadow effects on buttons
9. Stereo Bluetooth
10. Video Camera
video ftw!
Video was something I always wondered why they did not put in. We can upload photos to picasa, you would think they would have done the same for youtube from the start.
A2DP is very important for me, but I kind of wonder how it will affect the battery life... I might just resort to the already-recommended switching off of 3G and GPS connectivity until needed, but they really are convenient to both have at any given time.
I might have to do what I did with my Uni and get a huge, ugly extended battery...
on screen keyboard
I can't wait for the a2dp profile. I love my sony BT stereo headset, the sound quality is amazing. Hopefully the range is good. I remember on my kaiser at first the range was about 10 feet, I tweaked those a2dp settings for months before I got anywhere near the advertised 30 foot range. I guess my second most awaited feature is gonna be the extension of the option menu. I looooove options. Thats the one thing I miss most about windows mobile, was the ability to change each and every option you could ever imagine. Hopefully android sways away from the "user friendliness" that apple fanboys are always bragging about. Screw user friendliness, I want my cupcake option menu to be 47 feet long, with a bunch of options that I have no idea what they do , and sub-options on those ones, and so fourth. That way I can LEARN more. User friendliness is another way of saying "No brains required! even a 3 year old can use it!!" Screw that. Just sayin'.
Once you have used it, it is hard to go back so I say stereo bluetooth for sure. This leash is driving me nuts...lol. After that I would say a native virtual keypad would be nice.
I really need the stereo bluetooth! I keep having to put the sim card back in my old trinity for workouts so i can use my stereo bluetooth headphones (no pockets in my shorts to put the phone when working out).....
I wouldn't say no to any of the other stuff though
They're adding a notepad? Any word on whether or not it will sync automatically with Google's notebook (it has a section for "Mobile notes")?
The camera in this thing is so pathetic, I don't think a video camera is going to be of much use to us. I'll go with the stereo bluetooth as well.

Skiing with HD2

Hi, wanted to briefly comment on my largely positive HD2 & skiing experience.
Video
Worked fine right down to about -15c (-25 with wind chill), noticed some jerks in recording but cant say if it was cold related, Here is the HD2 video I made.
Bear in mind that some videos had gamma/brightness adjustments.
Camera
Yea, not too bad after the HTC camera patch, the last image at the end of the video is a (curve adjusted) photo taken with HD2. I was impressed with the camera under some conditions (medium-good light levels and little movement), still not in the same league as an N95 especially in low light conditions.
Music application
Worked OK, but its still pretty lame, making the experience quite frustrating:
1. no volume control on the headphone piece
2. long pauses while (large) playlist loads, why is this not cached???
3. Cant use your own headphones with remote (like Nokia) so had to use crappy HTC ones
4. Scrolling large lists in the cold! (I believe there is a scroll bar in 1.6x)
5. loads more niggles
General
No problems most of the time but a couple of times in extreme cold (-15) I found the keyboard became really erratic and once it even completely stopped responding. I also noticed that coming in from the extreme cold quite a lot of fog behind the screen, this cleared up after the phone warmed up with no ill effects.
All in all I was happy, BUT I was pretty pissed off to find, after running for the plane, a scratch on the screen, keys or coins the culprit.. just shows how wrong the unscratchable claims are!
Sorry to hear about the scratch on your screen. You should have listened to your head and bought a screen protector. It's not too late.....
WB
And you really should have tested the SatSki application, then you could also have tested the GPS functionality.
Had this application already running on my previous phone, excellent application for skieers and on the big HD2 screen it is really handy.
I've downloaded Satski and will be trying it in Les Deux Alpes in a couple of weeks, will report how it goes.
I must admit I noticed the same thing about not being able to ajust the volume using the remote on the headset. That's a real pain.
Also intending to buy some new thin gloves for using the phone poss The North Face E-Tip or Blacks do their own version which I tried in store and they work ok (perfect for texting your mate at work while you're have a beer on the slope)
Headset
I use my HD2 when snowboarding with Jabra bt620s bluetooth headset. It works great and I can adjust the volume, skip songs and answer calls with buttoms on the headset. And its nice not to worry about wires.

To be fair I don't really have a problem with you guys being behind me...........because you can't keep up on your trays.
What I really need is a camera that can look out for groups of you sitting down just after the brow of a hill.

[Q]Questions from an iphone user regarding xperia play

Hi.
I'm on the fence on switching from an iPhone 3G to an xperia play. I'm kind of hesitant about the music control in xperia play, since I've never used Android before but the gamepad is slowly drawing me in since the iPhone emulation scene (the ones that I like) is mostly dead due to zodttd quiting ios and pandora scene.
Here are my questions:
1. Does this phone have a shortcut like the iphone where you can quickly control the music by pressing the home button twice and clicking on a media playback icon?
2. Does number 1 work when the phone is on sleep like the iphone?
3. Can 2 be done on just inside the pocket of you pants with minimal eye contact with the phone?
4. Does the position of the 3.5 jack feel weird/flaky when the phone is vertically set in your pocket with earphones attached?
5. Is it worth buying the phone now? I'm thinking this phone will end up being worth $350 at some point in a few months here? It's currently $534 here. I'm thinking of either waiting for the iPhone5 or buying this.
6. Is true this phone is picky on earphones? I tend to break my earphones (only one ear works) a lot so I tend to buy cheap ones. I think I've broken 3 official iphone headsets, 2 sony earphones and 2 sennheiser earphones, so cheap is in for me as of now.
7. I'd also like to ask if there is an application like flicktunes where you can control the player by flicking up, right, left, down with one or two fingers?
Thanks in advance.
Let me have a crack at this
1. You have shortcuts for almost anything on any android device.
Configure it the way you please for any application, with settings & options almost unlimited.
2.You need to specify if you mean phone is in sleep mode with the screen guard enabled or not.
If you are talking wen screen guard in enabled, certain apps have an option to not let the phone lock.
3. i'll skip this cos am not sure why you want to do this.. it's not very difficult to pull the phone out and stop music (or whatever) from the notification bar.
4. Feels quite fine.
5. IS it worth buying this phone? am not sure about that.. depends on your preference. but my advice would be an android device is a definitely more user friendly and customizable.. and free.. open source remember
6. any kind of ear phone will work... keep ur ears safe
7. almost any app there is for the iphone or windows fone or anything that has some usability, there is an android app.
thanks for asking!
I was a former 3GS owner and I can't say enough good things about the Xperia Play. I don't miss my iPhone at all.
The only gripe I have is that the level of brightness is never going to be as high as it is on the iPhone. Other than that you can customize Android to do a lot of things like the iPhone. Starting music is as easy as putting a music control widget on your homescreen. If you root you can also use a button remapper app to map media controls to any hardware key on the device, so in your pocket... easy to play/stop/ff/rewind with blind button pushing. You can even use an app called Tasker to do even further automation of almost any kind.
The headphones jack feels solid, never flakes on me, doesn't feel weird on the side. I use Sony Bluetooth headphones 90% of the time and it never has problems connecting either (cords annoy me on any device).
If you like emulation and games, get this device. It's easily the best phone to handle it. Touchscreen gaming will never be able to match the tactile response and level of control you get from real built-in controller keys, period.

1. There is a music widget, which you can place on any one of your homescreens, which has all the controls.
2. I'm not sure how you can use on screen controls while the screen is off...considering this isn't possible on iphone either I'll assume you mean lock screen controls, in which case yes, you can.
3. If you have an in-line remote you can. I've also heard of assigning long press volume up and down for next and previous track, for pocket navigation.
4. If you have a 90 degree jack on your earphones, then it's fine.
5. That's all a matter of opinion. In my opinion, I'd much rather go for the play rather than the iphone, ESPECIALLY if your doing console emulation. On screen controllers have NOTHING on physical buttons, period.
6. No, no issues here.
7. Yes, because you can download different music players in the market, you can choose the one that best suits your needs. I have seen ones with gesture controls.
All in all, in the switch to Android you can literally feel the grip on your balls loosen once you figure out all the options you have.
If you are going to use headphones for listening to music, you can install poweramp and use heatphone button to control your music. A single press of the headphone button can be used to start or pause the music. Similarly double press can be used to skip to next track and triple press to skip to previous track.

Yes it is. If your iphone is in sleep mode you can double click the home button and it brings up the music player. You don't need to unlock the home screen.
And no I could not do this from the play. It would be nice.
I also came from the 3GS. It is different for sure but worth the adjustment.

So what's wrong with lock screen music controls? I know it doesn't behave exactly like the iphone but the end result is the same, music controls without unlocking.

You completely missed the first part of the sentence, I was obviously referring to something else. I didn't know about the double click home while sleeping while playing music feature.
And i was simply telling you about it. I didn't mean to offend you.
Thanks for all the replies most of them were really helpful. I'm still on the fence though since I'm still thinking of the number of apps in the app store vs android market (I have an ipad, so this point maybe moot except for camera apps).
I am also worried about the possibility of a follow-up to this phone and the dpad functionality on fighting games (see other thread). I'll probably buy the XP (if ever) after 2 weeks since the Zagg here will only have it by then (Considering buying the dock and too lazy too remove case every time).
Hopefully I'll adapt to the quickly to the controls in the widgets and the syncing using iTunes through 3rd party software.

DoubleTwist has this option, puts a skip/pause and play controls on its own lock screen. there is also a tap to unlock button which then goes to the handsets lock screen.
Coming from iPhone its also great as the desktop app uses iTunes and has wireless syncing as well.

Also a walk through video is available on youtube (in Chinese):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ldpTp1kZyQ
From what information I gather through the video, the watch does not run Android, instead run a custom OS (java based most likely). The battery size is 350mah, and the watch take an optional micro-sim.
The video also claim the watch is water resistant, but not water proof. Additional the sync software work mostly only with Android, iOS have very limited sync functionality.
Hi
Hey can u plz give the review.. I am thinking of buying a smartwatch within $70-80.. so considering U8 or U8 Pro.. there is another one though which I liked but can't find any review at all.. So how is this U8 Pro? & another thing.. do u know if in the given range there is any watch with a 3.5mm port or not?
@NeelDroid - there's the SmartQ Z watch which but its $99, however using Bitcoin you can get it for $79. Features:
3.5mm port
3 different custom ROMs
Firmaware updates
Play Store but only certain apps work
Water resistant
Refer to the thread pls.
On a different note there's the Chinese Pebble copy for around $58. Please refer to its thread.

$79 with shipping registered worldwide :highfive: - it does not have a speaker, just a 3.5mm port.
Contact user adro (no paypal, bitcoin only) http://smartqwatch.com/forum/discussion/5336/selling-smartq-z-watch-z-watch-lite-69usd
Note: there are two models, the lite model for $69 no with no Wifi and less RAM ...i think and the other one with Wifi. Come with a few colours.
Also a newer model (Z2 or P1 or H1, not sure what its called) is supposed to be coming out in June, unconfirmed cost is around $169, no 3,5mm port, but with speakers.

MIC/Speaker is a very useful feature. Voice to text/text to voice, voice search, voice commands and the like. This can all be done without digging that 5.4" massive phone out of your pocket every time or in cases where your hands are full or the phone is out of reach. Speaker without a MIC is silly though.
i just sold my u8 to get the u8 pro... found like 3 new videos of it on youtube and it seems good for the money.. hopefully i'll get it soon..
so what are the differences between U8 and U8 pro?

Well there is a micro sim card slot which allows it to be a stand alone phone if needed.
This is all for an android phone ad that is what I am using with btnotify as downloaded from the details on the instruction sheet that came with the phone.
The phone arrived set to Chinese so to set it to English find the settings icon (looks like a gear wheel)
Tap the second option down.
Tap the second option down again.
Select the first option which is English.
I have one of these and it works pretty well even just as a phone.
Unfortunately the instruction sheet is a bit limited and you need to work a few things out.
Using btnotification on an android phone it will push full notification with some of the contents not just the fact you have a message to the watch.
You can start your smart phone camera and see the picture it is seeing then make it capture it on the smart phone using the smart watch as a remote control.
You can use the music app on the smart watch to operate your music played app on the smart phone to play music held on your phone. On mine I can skip tracks but NOT alter the volume coming through the smart phone speakers or smart phone earphones.
Of you allow the music to play through the smart watch speaker or earphone then the volume control on the smart watch works locally.
This may depend on the app you have on the phone and what functionality the phone has.
There are 4 clock faces and the digital one is very good.
The screen is bright and has good viewing angles. It comes on with a button press and goes off on a second button press or after about 5 seconds of inactivity. This is good for the battery life and not as much as much of a pain as it might at first appear.. No more so than pressing a button for a back light at night. There is only one button so you can't get it wrong.
Slightly annoyingly the standard micro USB plugs are longer at about 8mm because the USB slot is sunk to protect it from damage and water I suppose. The earphones are also micro USB in fact the same slot a there is only one. A 3.5 mm jack would have been better for me ad I don't like the earphones supplied very much. A bit of rooting around on the net can yield some 8mm cables but as yet I have not found a 8mm micro USB to 3.5 mm jack plug adaptor.
If anyone can work out how the speed dial works I would love to know how.
You can get the local sim to call numbers by entering their position on the sim followed by #. Not really the same thing but easier than scrolling through the local address book. Note their position on the sim is as they were added to the sim not alphabetical.
I might add to this as I find out a bit more.
I do have the observation that while names come up for incoming calls to the smart watch if they come from the smart phone it displays the phone number. Maybe this is just my fault.
Both the lost phone and loss of blue tooth connection (phone out of range) work.
I will be interested to see any other comments or instructions from anyone else.
Well only one day in and I find an undocumented feature. If you move your arm forward like you want to know the time the screen comes on. So one handed operation is no problem. Obviously someone used an accelerometer feed to switch on the display or my watch has a loose connection but I think it is very clever, just wish I had a manual that documented all the features.
Note you may have to try it a few times to get it to work but it will.

So moving your arm up turns on the screen? Is this a standard function or does like the pedometer have to be on?
is the watch strap replaceable? i dont really like buckle straps and would prefer a deployment clasp. im gonna be ordering this tomorrow so i would just like to know so that i could get the strap at the same time. I intend to make a video on this watch since there arent many. im actually excited for this watch, my hopes arent high but from what i can tell it's a pretty decent smart watch for what it costs.

Well there is a micro sim card slot which allows it to be a stand alone phone if needed.

i guess if the usb connector is not long enough on this one could remove the plastic case and stick some hot glue on it to make it longer.
so i got the impression though that you cannot store music on u8 pro itself, right?
also i`m kind of assuming that you would not be able to use u8 pro with bluetooth headset

headset of headphones? you should be able to use a headset but it might get a bit complicated. like if you answered on the phone and wanted to switch to the headset, it might switch to the watch instead of the headset but thats the only problem that might come up. because this watch is its own phone, it allows you answer the phone with the audio coming out of the phone and if you answer on the watch the sound will come out of the watch, the headset shouldnt get in the way... but thats based off my understanding of how the watch and bluetooth works, ill update when i get the watch haha
update: i said up there that answering on the phone would make the audio come out of the phone while answering on the watch will make the audio come out of the watch. well earlier today i asked on youtube whether or not this is true and the guy said that it is false. audio will always come out of the watch. BUT in the elegance u8 thread, someone said that the the audio will only come out of the watch if you answer on the watch, so im not sure. can anyone else confirm whether this is true or false?

I think the strap is a standard 24mm wide or just slightly less than 1 inch.
It looks pretty standard with except that the pin holding it is not a spring loaded type but
in fact looks as if it is some sort of screw with a hexaganol head
of the type you would put a very small Allen key in.
Changing it looks as though it should be pretty easy if you have two such Allen keys.

Not quite as easy as that because the metal outer case has to be 8mm all the way back from the tip to the shoulder on the plastic.
I read somewhere about someone stripping back the standard plastic plug and finding just the wires underneath.
There is a web site I found selling the longer tip variety of micro USB plug so if it arrives I will test it and maybe I can post a link.
You are correct I think as so far the only music I have played was on my smart phone.
The Bluetooth headphones might not be a problem as you can probable pair them with your smart phone
if the watch won't recognise them , which I suspect it wont.
The odd thing even then the volume control on the watch, in my case won't communicate with the volume control in my music app.
It will make the tracks skip and pause, pity about the volume control.
It is a dedicated piece of firmware as opposed to Android so it boots up very quickly but there are limitations unless the manufacturer posts updates to the firmware.
The battery life is quite good so far, for me a day of light use at least. Charging is pretty quick. It will of course charge off a lap top or aux battery using its 8mm micro USB cable.

No

A2DP Mode?

I have an Atoto S8 G2 and I use a lot of bluetooth streaming from my phone for things like podcasts.
I used to have a more basic touchscreen bluetooth head unit that showed the name of the track, artist, etc, all while sitting on a home screen with the clock and a moving line that showed the playback position in the track/file/song/etc, as well as minute/second marker. This was useful because I could press-and-hold ff or rew to move along inside whatever I'm listening to, much like an old school CD player.
I'm a little bit disappointed at how my Android unit handles bluetooth streaming. The screen just shows the track name and artist name, and then a HUGE MOVING DISTRACTING OSCILLOSCOPE STYLE DANCING BARS. I'm including a picture to illustrate. It's ugly and annoying, and there is no indication of where I'm up to in the track/title, nor is there a way to move the position around with buttons or any other methods. If I don't like looking at that dancing line of audio levels, I can press home but then it doesn't show me anything at all. I'd like to glance at which part of a lecture or book series etc I'm in before I shut off the car. It's silly the way it looks, there must be a better way! Is this how all Android head units handle Bluetooth A2DP / streaming, or just Atoto?
Also, if I use Android Auto (plug in, etc) and then disconnect it, it doesn't go back to Bluetooth mode. I understand if I switch sources to radio or something else, it shouldn't go back. But if I plugged in my phone, then next time I get in my car and decide I don't need AA, but I'm wondering why there's no sound coming out... it's because I'm still in AA mode!! Is there a way to automatically go back to the last mode when AA / Carplay finishes a session, much like a phone call would go back?
