Help with overheating/throttling - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought the nexus 4 and it was running very smooth on stock. But the battery life was kind of bad and the back got hot very fast. I decided to flash faux kernel. Then i set the governor to intellidemand (like many suggested) and didnt touch anything else. Now the phone lags a bit and it heats just as much as stock. Anything i've missed?

you have a quad core phone with a glass back, itll get hot with use and youll feel the heat escaping through the back glass. this is normal.

I mean the actuall battery temp when playing games. What settings do you recomend, like what governor etc?

your battery will get hot too, when playing games, especially when plugged in. what temp is it reaching? how about cpu temp? hot doesnt say much, hot/cold is relative. give me a temperature. i dont use faux kernel, so i cant help you with it. i use trinity kernel at its default(1026mhz, all 4 cores enabled, ondemand/deadline. again, heat is normal. having a glass back just makes it feel like its too hot. the glass is there to cool off the phone, transfer the heat to the atmosphere. if it was plastic or metal, it wouldnt feel as hot. if your phone gets too hot, itll reach the safety shutdown and shut itself off. before that point, thermal throttle kicks in too cool off your device. all thermal throttle does is reduce your cpu speed.

I wanted to start the topic about over heating.
My N4 is very hot when i use it normaly. I instaled battery info and i have buld infos. Battery temp. Is about 37°c but it feels like 50°c. Its located around the camera.
Is that normal? Does anybody else have that overheating issue?

37C is normal. I've seen my battery go up to 46C before heavy throttling, but generally it sits around 35-42C depending on what it is I do. My thermal throttle starts when battery hits 40C.

overheating isnt an issue for the nexus 4. 37C is normal, the average human body temp is 37C. things "feel" hot on the back because the back is glass. its glass so that it can transfer heat out of the phone quicker. its safe for the battery to get near 60C and for the cpu to get to its cpu shutdown temp(95-100C).

I having the same problem playing ingress while plugged in and I notices the back screen protector shield i got on it has made the heat even worst but it protects it from getting scratched up. o well i guess i have to live with it or install custom kernel with uv and uc

while plugged in will get it hotter, plus the back screen protector will prevent heat from escaping..

yeah I know. i just debate if i should take the back protector off i mean i only really worried about the front of the screen. it just took some time to put it on

mines naked. the front screen is perfect, but the back glass has micro scratches. im not too worried about the back. the shimmering effect covers the scratches well

Both 37c and 50c are normal. You don't have an overheating problem and neither does anyone else on our forums. We reaaaally need a sticky about this. I'm not trying to be an ass about it, but this has been beaten to death. Just because the phone feels warm doesn't mean it's overheating.

My Legend is "melting"

Just had a close look at my phone today and noticed that my sd-card was not so smooth black anymore and that my battery was melted open at the top.
Doesnt look all to good but still works strangely
Any1 of you experienced it to?
I never expected that overclocking (768) would make the plastic and battery melt, but kinda makes sense ;D
If you want pics i'll upload them

dont have the camera right now and obviously cant use the phone for pics, ill post them as soon i've got my camera back
oh dear, this sounds serious! maybe constantly in operation combining with Overclock and high room temperature/hot hands altogether?!

It doesnt't make sense actually, I've been on 768 since it got out and I've used Mugen extended battery, but it never ran that hot...
Just FYI, temperature to melt most these plastics is around 80 - 85°C (175 - 185°F) so the CPU would have to run at nearly 100°C to get the battery that high...
My gues is either there's something wrong with simething in the battery (charging circuits or something) or the phone has been exposed to sun too long
Anyhow, please uploat pics when you can
hope it works on...

strange then, and i just found out my old phone has the same cpu; wish there was a way to swap them
i think my cpu is getting f*** up, i can only overclock to 768 all higher instantly freezes and they didnt before
and yea its not really melted, but its starting to get rough and out of shape
In my experience buying HTC phones, repairing then selling...It's usually water that causes the overheating.Maybe it got wet in rain? Or even moisture being in a car on a cold night? Does the usb port also get hot? This would probably mean a short somewhere,Also inside there is a metal casing, is this were left off the CPU Would have no insulation so can melt the battery as its touching it.Pictures would help the diagnosis

Battery/Phone Getting Very Hot

Hey everyone -
Not sure if you've experienced this but I have the At&t HTC One 32GB model and I noticed that it heats up when watching videos or even downloading something. It gets over 100F as I have a battery monitor which informs me and I feel how uncomfortable it is. anyone else expericing this and maybe we'll need to root and Use Set CPU to add a profile which underclocks the CPU when it goes over 90 or something like that
I could just have a faulty device but i've read a few articles where people mentioned this but it doesn't get much attention -probably because people don't wanna bad mouth the phone so to speak. who knows
Maybe a Kernel and software update will help along with battery drain.

The heat is normal, you will find that the SoC can safely go up to 60 degrees Celsius and possibly more. The reason you feel it is due to aluminium being very good at dissipating the heat and as your hands are touching the metal, they conduct that heat
Its really just a case of either getting a case/cover. OR hold the device with two hands with the bottom of your palm (wrist end) pressed into the two sides of the phone (landscape) This way you get minimal heat to your hands and the device can cool itself as more air will get to the back

sounds great but it even heats up when the case is on it.. all phones heat up but this is pretty hot. i bet if they did that melting butter experiment with this chip, it will melt with absolutely no problem lol. this may sound strange but sometimes when im holding it and its hot, i use my mind and it cools down off and on.. goodness knows i be trynna make that work because i know how everything is really connected but yeah
hope they address this somehow

Yeah its just due to the metal honestly. In plastic phones the area where the SoC is gets extremely hot and just as unbearable to touch. BUT as this is an aluminium unibody the heat spreads all over. The reason I said to hold the top and bottom of the device where the speakers are is because there is a plastic strip separating the middle piece of metal from the two sides, meaning these sides are cooler to hold.
Yes, mine one can get quite hot especially when I play game. However one the other hand, I find it cooling down extremely fast comparing to my GS3 which does take time to warm up also to go back to comfortable temperature.
Must due to the aluminum back which transfers the heat faster than plastic.

In my experience, gets One XL got noticeably hotter than the One when performing the same tasks.
Everyones heat tolerance is different. Phone gets WARM when im watching video. Couple minutes later it's not hot. So it's definateky not a issue.
Plastic insulates the heat, aluminum dissipates heat. No brainer here

Previous posters hit it right on the head. The aluminium body acts just like a heat sink sucking moving heat from inside out and then your hands act like an insulator keeping the heat there. The OG Droid did the same thing. It's just part of having this design. Keep in mind though it does an excellent job of stopping your phone from hitting critical internal tempetures.

Overheating Solution?

Hey guys so basically we everytime I play a game the temperature of the Nexus 4 increases greatly, and we can feel the heat radiating from the back.
So what I do now is place the Nexus 4 in the fridge for about 3/4 minutes and the temperature then reduces from 40°C to around 30°C which is around normal.
I'm not sure if this is good for the phone it self, so I ask your opinion. Please contribute.
Thanks.

It likely isn't. I believe it'll cause some condensation, and cause liquid to build-up inside and/or on the device, and liquid isn't too kind to electronics.
40C is nothing lol, my phone gets like that when am on browser, when am on chrome its closer to 50-60C.
you have a quad core phone, itll get hot when you push the cpu(gaming). this is normal. you feel the heat through the back glass because they used glass to help transfer the heat out of the phone faster. one thing you can do that will keep the phone cool is to not use the phone.
Just flash a custom kernel and UV..simple as that!!
You shouldn`t cool your phone in fridge. There is too high humidity

How do they come up with it :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:.
Maybe you better cool your own brain
place the phone on a sheet of metal or glass to conduct the heat, you shouldn't put it in the fridge depending how wet it is inside,

This came to mind when I read your post.
You know how to break glass right? And you're putting a hot glass front and back phone in the fridge? I wouldn't make a habit of it and expect anything good to result.
My advice, besides finding a different ROM and/or kernel combo that suits your needs better; use a console/desktop for gaming.
Thanks to all those who answered my question. Luckily I only did it once phew!
I had a feeling that there would be something wrong with putting it in the fridge.

Overheating Issue On Galaxy Note 4 N910G.

Hey,
I've Galaxy Note 4 N910G. It got heat up with use. It got so much heated up that it can iron clothes. I noticed that it happens when I increase screen's brightness, and one biggest thing to notice is that whole body is cool expect the upper part (where camera lies). And in upper portion, screen side is hot when touched. So I remove plastic case and check whether battery or camera, sensor are hot, but it didn't seems to, only the area that lies under receiver is hot when touched.
I concluded brightness factor due to following reason:
-I've played GTA LCS to a very long period in very low brightness and phone didn't heat up a lot, but yes, a little.
-I've then played the same for very same period but with mid brightness and phone started heating up, then a lot!
-I've used my Note 4 for a very long time downloading and installing apps in minimum brightness and it doesn't heat up.
-I've played on the music with screen off for a long time, and it still don't heat up.
-While backing up or doing anything in TWRP recovery it get heat a lot.
It doesn't mean that I should you Note 4 with minimum brightness. It was running on stock firmware, so I flashed Dr. Kretan custom Rom, I thought it would help, but it doesn't.
Please help me, what should I do?
Hmm that's a strange part that heats up since the CPU is on the side near the power button. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/rZAAWFWV4qobuSI4.huge
Normally when a device gets hot at a certain point other than the CPU it usually is water damage or a broken IC (component) on the mainboard.

Thanks for your answers. I notice this thing again with Xposed module for CPU temperature in status bar. And you got it right, it is CPU issue, so, how can I fix it? Should I underclock CPU? Or is there anything on market like some heat sink compound! I really have no idea. Ironing of cloth is just saying to show what I'm talking about, currently when it get heat up, I put it in front of Air Conditioner! I appreciate your answering.

Is it normal for the N4 to run super hot?

I've had a N4 back around launch and although I recall of hearing people with problems of their N4s getting hot, I haven't noticed anything too bad.
Just got a N4 again recently, and during OS updates (I use CM), the back of the N4 gets so hot it can burn if I hold my finger at a specific spot.
I've heard of some fix a while back involving putting some kind of shim between the CPU and the piece of metal it sits near so it could use that as a heatsink basically; would this really help?

Hi,
It will get hot when updating OS as after wiping of cache, all the apps are optimised again. During normal usage however it wont, as you'll use a custom kernel with setting a highest possible temperature. I usually leave my phone for a while to cool it down after updates and then use it.
You can put a thermal paste between body and cpu, this will spread heat better. Metal shim is a better conductor but can affect your GPS performance.
This lets your phone run cooler by a few degrees, but is it worth prying open your phone just for this?

Yes, it is normal. Its CPU gets hot with medium-high usage, and the dissipation of the phone is not so good.
And Yes, applying a shim of copper with thermal paste as described here improves the situation! I did it some months ago, and I can assure you it still works. Moreover, if you manage to undervolt a bit, you'll notice that you'll not feel the back turning hot ever again! Since I did this, using my phone in 3g while I'm around is not a problem in terms of temperature anymore.
