Buying S4 from AT&T @ full price - worth it? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can get the S4 from AT&T for $639...no contract.
The phone will be SIM locked, but since I still have AT&T service (grandfathered data plan with 20% discount), I can ask for the unlock code later (have Note 1 now - got the unlock code in 6 months after purchasing the phone).
The reason is because I want US warranty. I bought Intl Note before and the phone went dead. I don't want to go through that hassle aanymore.
So...worth it?

Dude is it worth it for you? Its your money.
I bought my S3 off contract, and sold my S2 for $300 so only payed around $350 out of pocket. Now I sold my S3 for $400 and got the S4 for 199 on contract.
And the day I got the S3 I got the unlock code from AT&T by calling and asking for it.
If you want it get it, but if I was you since you have a note I would just wait for the Note 3.
Or whatever buy the S4 and then sell it back and get a Note 3 off contract.

What about the micro sim for the iPhone? Or do you have another regular sim that you can use?

Micro-Sim to Sim adapters cost about a dollar on amazon.
While I appreciate the info, this thread title gave me false hope, lol.
Welcome to years ago & welcome to the Note club.
galaxy s2
Me too just did the same thing wit the galaxy s2 but I only got $450 for it.
I do the same but with two galaxy s II
Was going to do the same thing but in the end, straight talk at $45 a month unlimited comes out cheaper over the 2 year run (saving $40 a month every single month), if I get booted for too much data, than I will do this

Any information will be highly helpful.
thanks
Yes the galaxy Note from India will work with AT&T.
At&T uses band 850 and 1900 for 3G network.
I thought the Note may come out on ATT officially before end of the year with LTE support. Why not just wait another 1-2 months and see what happens.

I highly, highly doubt it. But if it does, I can always sell my current one and use the money to buy the AT&T version. Unless AT&T's version is crappier, in which case I'll simply be glad I enjoyed my Note for all of that time before AT&T got around to releasing one, and also appreciate how much better my international version is.
For people waiting to "cash in" their 24 month upgrade credit, the smart way to do it is to buy the most valuable for resale phone at the time (unfortunately usually an iphone) and sell it, saving the money for the phone they actually want. No point in waiting for the phone you actually want to be released unless you know it's coming soon and the resale value's high enough that with ebay/paypal fees included it wouldn't make more sense to go the other iroute.
Thoughts?

I saw this and thought it would be good to post.

I'm on AT&T myself and might just wait and see what happens. If it doesn't come to AT&T, I could still always choose the UK version...and maybe the price would even come down a bit.
I'm using the Dell Streak right now. I love it, so I really don't mind waiting a bit.
mha1021 or anyone here, Can someone please, please tell me how to get a an iphone 4s with a 2 year contract to get the discount but instead activate a galaxy note instead? Perhaps i missed the details but I live in Long Island NY and at&t is not selling the iphone 4s without activating it. Am i supposed to buy it, activate the iphone and then use the sim card with the note? Is the iphone then locked or imei not cleared and not sell-able? My goal is to get a 2 year contract using the galaxy note, but purchase the iphone on the 2 year contract at $200 and then sell it to offset the cost of the note.

It doesn't hurt anything to activate the sim card in the iphone then take it out and use it in the Note. You may have to put it in a dumbphone before the Note if you want to call in and have them switch you to the $15 unlimited dumbphone data, or you may be able to just call them, give them the Note's IMEI, and tell them it's a dumbphone (insert brand/name of dumbphone here.)
But if you want the iphone unopened/unactivated (maybe it sells for more? I don't know), you can purchase it through apple in a store or on their website, using your upgrade for the $200 price, then when it gets to the apple store tell them not to open or activate it.
Thank you Max, I do not have an upgrade as I am not an at&t customer. I am planning of going under my gf's family plan so I was looking to get a new 2 year contract under that plan. (Does that matter?) I am OK with paying all of the family plan rates and am not looking to get unlimited via other means. My main problem is I was lead to believe via many posts (not here) that getting an iphone 4s with the 2 year discount was easy and I could then sell it. at&t will not sell an iphone 4s here in LI without activating it. So, is activation what I have to do or are there other options where I could get a boxed iphone 4s (legally) and activate my note instead? However, this is another important question... If I activate a brand new iphone 4s, what do I have to do to make this phone sell-able? at&t said that I had to keep the iphone for 6 months. How do they know? Is the imei locked? Do I have to unlock it via other means or can someone just add this phone to their plan? I wish at&t was more forthcoming. I do not see why there is a problem here since I am buying the 2 year contract in the first place.
CHANGE THE THREAD TITLE.
OP IS NOTHING NEW. FEEL BAD YOU JUST REALIZED SOMETHING PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING FOR YEARS.

Only problem is no insurance through ATT if you have an accident. You can buy a year online for $60 from a 3rd party though.

ATT with Galaxy Note

My contract is up. When will att start selling these things with a new contract. I'm not paying the $700+ for a phone or tablet or a phonetab lol.......I gave my sister my samsung infuse 4G and i have her crappy iphone 3G and im getting tired of seeing this iphone everyday, i'm an android fan.
Anyone with knowledge about this please let me know. thanks
Could be 6 months, who knows. I personally wouldn't hold my breath on AT&T picking it up anytime soon.
look how long it took for the SGS2 to come out to AT&T after the international version came out. I'm guessing 4-6 months again.
Probably at least 4-6 months if ever. Most likely they'll not get it and wait on a quad core variant since Tegra 3 based phones/tablets are due out early 2012.
It should be about 4 months from now, but that model will throw in an NFC chip and LTE.
However, your an idiot if you delay your contract for it.
It's much cheaper and more freedom, if you purchase it for $700 unlocked and use a pay-as-you-go (or Prepaid) service. In the end, you'll save more money, there wont be cancellation fees and your device is unlocked (use it overseas). Plus, you could sell your Note for ~$550 later on and buy another device (Note 4G or the SGSIII) for $750.
Trust me, you'll thank your lucky stars if you do that and opt for the extra freedom.
If you want to stick with subsidized phones and contracts, just buy an iphone 4s, sell it on ebay for $650, and use the money to buy the Note.

Question about Verizon edge

I have a s4 on unlimited data and want to give the s4 to my wife and get the note 3. I qualify to get the note 3 on Verizon edge. Question is can I swap the phones over similar to what most people do when opening just a normal 2nd line or its not possible because the 25$ for edge is linked to the note 3?
Yes it is possible. All you have to do is swap SIM.

If my wife wanted to upgrade the note 3 would have to be turned back in correct?
I've never turned in a phone at upgrade...

I thought I read somewhere for Verizon edge you have to turn the phone back in.

Only if the phone isn't paid off. You can upgrade your phone after 6 months and you would have to turn the other phone back in.
Why would you want to go with the EDGE program?
I'm not going with it I'm keeping my unlimited plan. I was starting Verizon edge for my wife because it seems like it's a better deal than going with a traditional contract.
Why do you need to keep a phone that's out of date? These devices are getting replaced by faster counterparts every 3-5 months as it is, granted nothing like the note 3 w/ s-pen, but still internal guts wise.
Its only $45-60(depending on conditions, etc) more at the end of 6 months then buying it on a subsidized rate, and I get the latest piece of tech for only tax again....and i'm not in contract anymore, month per month.
So I decided to give a shot,
I lost my unlimited, oh well. My data-whore days are over. I did however 'sweet-talk/complain' my way into a 8gb for the price of 2gb, instead of the 6gb they were going to offer me.
So my bill going from my old unlimited plan , to this new w/ 8gb, only went up $30( ($125.53 p/m) after taxes, no-contract, great LTE coverage, and new toy ever 5-7 months... and only having to pay $40 at the Verizon store and walking out with a new Note 3.
I'm not sure what you're trying to explain. I'm adding Verizon edge as a second line and swapping sim cards with the note 3. They will have to trick me or just completely take away my unlimited before I just gave it up.

I was basically just explain the perks in me IMO.
In your case, you can swap the sims (should be able to), but the Note 3 will never be yours unless you pay outright for it all $700 of it. Even if you are putting your sim into the note 3 from the s4, the contract is written out for the device you get on the upgrade.
Edge is a 0% interest loan basically on the phone, and you can upgrade to a newer phone once you hit $350 paid or 6 months, which ever is first.

I see. So you're adding a second line? Or is the second line your wife's line and its available for the Edge upgrade?
Double post.
I was under the impression you pay the 25$ a month and once you pay the phone off its yours to upgrade or trade. I think you're saying that if I want to upgrade before I pay the phone off I would have the swap the Sims back around since the contract is for the note 3?
Yep I'm adding a second line for my wife. She likes my s4 and I want the note 3.

Just get the Note 3 for your wife and swap SIMs. Don't go with Edge. The Edge program is only available for lines that have upgrades available so you wouldn't be able to put it on your wife's line. If you do the Edge upgrade on your line, you will lose your unlimited data. So you might as well start a new contract with your wife's line and pay subsidized price of the Note 3. You're gonna be locked in for two years anyway for the new line.
I'm a available for a upgrade but I will never use it when I talked to the Verizon rep he said I could start a new line with edge and it will not affect my plan what so ever

[Q] Are folks still paying $199 for a S5 from AT&T with 2-year contract?

How much, now-a-days, are folks paying for a new Galaxy S5 with a 2 year contract directly from AT&T? When I got my S3 the advertized price was $199 with two year contract, but with a little crying and with a copy of a receipt that someone posted on XDA that showed they paid only $99 I was able to get two S3 for $99 each. This happened just one month after the phone was released and my contract was about to expire. Has anyone here been able to get the S5 from AT&T for less $199?
Thanks...

[Q] Best off contract price in Canada?

Given that I have a killer grandfathered plan on Rogers with 6 Gb data, and they will not, no way no how, let me keep it and do a HUP, I am seriously considering doing a full price purchase. Best I could do after spending a bunch of time with rententions is the offer to get a share everything plan discounted to $85. Over 2 years that is the same as buying the phone outright, and locks me back into a contract.
I am on Rogers in Canada, and want LTE so I would really like to get a Canadian variant SnapDragon Note 4. The best off contract price I have found is $799 (basically the same everywhere). Has anyone seen a better outright purchase price?
Maybe port your nunber to a different carrier? That way you'll be paying for the phone on contract.
I got my phone from Bell on 2-year contract for $175 and $10 increment of my monthly bill.
I just bought mine off kijiji for $800. It's the n910u. I have same Rogers plan and certainly ain't giving it up considering Rogers wants $130 a month for the same plan now.

Looking into that. Managed to talk them down from $130 to $85 for a "share everything" (what a crock) plan that included my 6 Gb, but that is still the same as buying the phone over 2 years. If I am going to have the spend the money I might as well keep my grandfathered plan and the freedom of a carrier free, unlocked phone.
Yep I told them to shove it. And I told them I'll give someone else the $800-900 for the phone so they won't make any money off of that either
how did you guys pay so little? Did you buy it this last week? When i got it the day it came out it was $299 at Bell

We are talking about monthly plan costs. We both have grandfathered Rogers plans that are a lot cheaper than current in market plans. Rogers recently has drawn a line in the sand and insists on people switching to a in market plan when doing a HUP (hardware upgrade). The current cost of the equivalent plan is around $150... I am paying $64.
Due to this I am looking at buying a Note 4 outright, to keep the plan, if I decide to stay with Rogers.
with the 910u you gonna get the lte...no problem there!!! it have all the band needed for the north America.....however you could get the Canadians variant 910W8 for the same price too.... your choice!!!!
