AOSP For Xperia Z
Originally posted by Sony Developer:
Remember our Android Open Source Project for Xperia S? Because of the great interest we saw in that project, we’ve now decided to create an AOSP project for Xperia Z as well. This means that the software will be open for you as a developer to use and contribute to. This is a way for us to continue our commitment to support the open Android community. It is also a tool for us to facilitate and verify contributions to AOSP on the MSM8064 Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro platform. Get the details after the jump!
About the project
Just as for the AOSP for Xperia™ S project, the AOSP for Xperia™ Z project will be maintained by Johan Redestig and Björn Andersson, senior software engineers at Sony. Now, if you go to Sony’s GitHub and check out the AOSP for Xperia Z project, you will find the code.
For the AOSP on Xperia™ Z project to run, we are also providing some binaries here on Developer World. Binaries are for example hardware drivers that are specific for a certain chipset. Since some of the binaries are proprietary files provided by Qualcomm, you can download Xperia Z binaries after accepting an end-user license agreement that states how the files can be used and what limitations that exist. Remember that the software is not intended for everyday use, and it does not include some apps and services that are part of standard phone software. Build instructions can be found in the readme file in the AOSP for Xperia Z project on GitHub.
Current status
Even though the software is not suited for everyday use, there are actually a lot of things working already. It boots up, and we have the SD-card, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth™, GPS, LED light, and sensors working (at least partially). And as you can see in the video above, we are also having the modem and camera running internally. However, both of these functions require proprietary binaries that we cannot publish at this time.
How to contribute
If you are interested in making contributions, head over to the AOSP for Xperia Z project on GitHub. Make yourself familiar with the code and feel free to have a look at the issue list to see where you might be able to help out. All contributions are handled through the GitHub tool.
Coming updates
Going forward, the next step in this project is to replace some of the binaries provided here on Developer World with source code, and to release binaries for NFC to work. For the latest technical status, check out the AOSP for Xperia Z project on GitHub. And feel free to drop us a line in the comments below if you have any questions. We hope many of you developers will engage in and contribute to this project!

When the first stable ROM is created, I'm off to the store to buy a Z
Let's hope that some magic comes from this!
As if I wasn't already coveting the Xperia Z enough. Now time to trade or sell my N4 for an Xperia Z
Damn this is crazy. I never saw this kind of step from the companys.
Damn you Samsung.
Well it works, just thought I'd give it a try
Not much works on it, but at least it can be worked on....

All the Nexus devices have the same issues. 'blobs' are used instead.
As this thread contains no original development and is just a discussion, it has been moved to the general section

KitKat is all fine and dandy but without, I am sure, additional sources released by Sony (Ericsson) we will probably never get a JB kernel working and still retain full Xperia PLAY compatibility... then again I may be completely wrong and if I am someone correct me. I have stayed pretty much on GB for gaming. Either way, thanks for sharing... although I think this should go to the General forum.... anyways... thread on.
google says that they made the OS smaller and after so old devices that didn't get in the past update can now get update because they resolve many issues.

Well maybe 4.4 is for older phones but as you know the companies support they devices for a short period of time. So no KitKat for us...

True but they also stated those will need to be updated by either the carrier or the manufacturer of the device(s). As $ony long ago gave up on the PLAY, I think its incredibly unlikely we will see any support form Sony and or even source releases.
Still, it would be awesome if we can get it up and running, but dont forget the highest kernel we can sort of get working, is kernel 3.4.
Kitkat would be an even higher kernel number.
Google isn't even releasing KitKat for the Galaxy Nexus. Sony isn't going to do it either, and it would need hardware drivers from Qualcomm side too.
Why is this thread in the dev section?
is that true?

Sorry for wrong section... Anyway to delete? On another note, dony and erricson broke up so i dunno if they would be wanting to support our 2011 devices. All we can do id hope a dev/sony has the power to bring us 4.4...
from the God of gaming, the Xperia Play
Nice Information
I think if the 3.4 Kernel is working it wont be difficult to get kitkat running. But as far there is no touch in 3.4

They abandoned it,yes. As far as i know, there are no new models build and everything that is floating around in shops are the last produced batches, not getting the update to Android 4 kinda sealed this assumption
I don't know if the X Play will ever get KitKat but Google introduced a new runtime called ART to replace Dalvik with KitKat, on my Nexus 4 it really improve the performance to a substantial amount, so maybe that will help as well.

Would be great if Sony would pay more attention to their old phones, specially because they cancelled the ics update so sudden.
But i don´t think this will happen.
And that's one reason I won't buy Sony again.
we will get 4.4, not official but we will get it.
once i got a play i will work on it, otherwise we will have an other dev.

so? is there anyone working on kitkat roms for xPlay? or its abandoned at all?
By the looks of it, KitKat is out of reach for our device, theres barely any 4.1 or 4.2 jellybean roms functioning, what makes you think we will get 4.4 any time soon? Our Play is best optimised for GB due to performance issues as ICS+ isn't 100% functional on our play. Don't believe me? try any ics rom out and sooner or later you will find out that games will lag and memory will tend to be low. Sorry but this is the bottom line for our xperia play.
Legacyxperia (mostly mike) is working to get gully working 3.4 kernel. Than we wpuld be able to boot kitkat.
Sent using C6833 - Carbon KitKat/Pimped Z1 Kernel
It is indeed possible, and I am saying this because I have NEO L(same as xplay) and I ran kitkat on my phone, thanks to @Mike's hard work. He reached at a point now where touch is working, he just need to have Wifi,Camera and some other things work and it will be there

Please stay on topic
Try to keep android L talk in this thread to avoid confusion
Using it on my N7 '13, it's pretty good.
37% more battery life seen on the N5 while browsing over WiFi. That's always a plus.
New toggles are great. Non customisable sadly.
The Cards task manager is great.
Material Design UI is great. Big, big change. Although the UI isn't consistent everywhere, many apps are yet to be updated for it.
The Camera API 2 also brings these to the table:
Many of the finer control*configurations*can also be modified, including:
Exposure time
ISO Sensitivity
Frame duration
Lens focus distance
Flash trigger
Color correction matrix
JPEG metadata
Tonemap curve
Crop region
AE / AF / AWB mode
AE / AWB lock
AF trigger
Precapture AE trigger
Metering regions
Exposure compensation
Target FPS range
Capture intent
Video stabilization

Is this discussion about Android L only, if so why is it in the 'Sony Xperia Z1' section of the forums?
As you see in this thread you have a chap posting images of the Android L on a Nexus 7 when this is a Sony Xperia Z1 section forums.
Sony's implementation will look nothing like the vanilla Android L.
I am sure there is a sub forum just for Android L chatter irrespective of what device you have outside of the 'Sony Xperia Z1' forum.

I had one question always.
Can we xsp users multi boot?
great ! firefox on sp wow
No, it's a side project so it doesn't get much time. Release won't be for several weeks. The issues are not only on the side of device porting but also on the side of Mozilla. It is still under active development, unlike Android which is only released when it is complete.
Yeah, but of we get Ubuntu, it'd better right? But alas, no dev to port it for xsp. Same is for Firefox. As @Levered said it'll take a lot of time to get updates from the op if it gets ported

I'm curious, what are you guys 'eager' to see this?
The reason for no release is due to camera. From what I can tell the camera blobs depend on some Android specific parts which will never be part of FxOS (of course).
Unless this is solved then I will probably not release this for Xperia SP as nobody will use it without a functioning camera.
I'm considering getting Xperia E1 to continue this project as this hardware is better supported in FxOS and it also looks like the camera blobs do not have this limitation.

You caused it lol by posting this and showing a video everyone got all excited also you could just release non working build like many devs do with their custom ROMs: on some phones the phone might never have working wi-fi on custom ROMs (desire c fixed after about a year of tinkering) or if you check out the HTC one x custom ROMs they have a lot of stuff broken too!

No way, missing camera (and bluetooth) are missing features too big to warrant a release.
Besides, would anyone really permanently switch from Android to FxOS on Xperia SP if I fixed these two issues and released it? I'd bet money on it that people would use it for a couple of hours maximum, then realize they need the Google services that push all notifications to the phone.
(FxOS doesn't have push notifications for most things, pretty much everything has to be reloaded / refreshed manually, even syncing contact data.)
tested on older device..
I have already tested Firefox OS on my older Xperia E Dual device.. it kinda sucked.. I didn't like the way it felt and it was laggy and super slow.. maybe it is better here in XSP

New camera api need drivers update (it depends also on hardware, not only on software, so lollipop is not synonymous of camera api 2). For now even on z3 and z2 there aren't, speak about xperia family. Don't expect camera api 2 on our phone, first thing for a marketing choice. Which are the phones with new camera api support? So much irony over here.. Previously before this annunciation we had post like „I don't expect Sony will bring us 5.0.x“,. after that we've seen „Sony is so dumbasse* that they can't bring us 5.1“ (or sth), and now, when we're officially getting 5.1 people start's saying „I don't expect Android M“.. c'mon, guys. We're so damn lucky that we even got 5.0.x, because our Z is 2+ years old.
come on guys even the nexus devices don't get updates tis much. instead of feeling bad about android m be glad about our XZ's having a L update. i think sony is doing a great job about android and phones or tablets. it's a shame that other phones users don't see the durability, camera, support and power of our devices.

Another 8 months more to get 5.1 based on my own speculation. Sony Mobile first announce their lollipop upgrade @oct last year and we got it after around 7 months.
5.0 -> 5.1 is a much simpler step than 4.4 -> 5.0 so it shouldn't take as long.
