what you can do is give us more info. battery temp? cpu temp? custom or stock? the back glass plate is glass so that your quad core cpu can transfer heat through it, thats how its supposed to cool off. thats why it feels hot. has the temp in your area warmed up for spring? btw, the heat isnt harming your phone. if it gets to hot, it shuts down by itself, as a safety. before that, itll reduce the cpu speed to keep it from getting to the shutdown point.

Because of the glass back it may seem hotter, whats the actual temperature? And battery temperatures are not the same as cpu temperatures

Yeah!!! Its summer now here!! Da temperature is around 35°c nd falls by nearly 5°c in da night

with warmer temps around you, expect the device to get warmer. cool seasonal temps also keep the device cooler

So what can i do to save my battery life??

Custom kernel with undervolting will help with temp and battery life. Star there.

Hey everyone, My nexus one gets extremely hot, if anyone holds it they always mention is as its abnormal for a phone.
Is this normal?

What does the phone say the battery temp is?
the nexus is good up to 140 degrees and operates at 90 to 110 on average.hope that helps

The real question should be...
Can you fry BACON?!
Well i can say that is getting on the abnormal side, i know mine operates normally at about 80-85F and then on charge it can reach 100F

haha.lol!
mine operates at 80-85 degrees Farenheit. thats with the UV @ stock speed.
Mine gets pretty warm when charging up, but other than that seems fine.
I've never experianced it reaching a temp that I would class as 'extremely hot' but then that's pretty subjective.
mine only get extremely hot when i'm charging and listening to last.fm at the same time, but i don't a seidio 1600mah battery, so that could be causing it too...
30C here while idle and not charging, 33C if charging by USB. I guess it goes up to about 40C when plugged into a wall charger.
It does get hotter after playing games on it for a while, though.
on a road trip about 4 hours away from me, i had the navigation, music player, trapster, and lastfm was "scrobbling" in the background. Mine was so hot that i couldn't really hold it in my hand. so i did a dumb thing and held it out the window. luckily i didn't drop it. I've never seen a phone get that hot before either. didn't get a temp as this is my first android phone and didn't know how to at the time. but definitely hotter than 100.
Er... if it was hotter than 100C, then you'd have gotten first-degree burns at least on your hand, so I doubt it. And can't you Yanks get on with the time and start using Celsius over Fahrenheit?
You know I mean 100*F. 100*C would be boiling water. And no I refuse to use the metric system, imperial all the way LOL. j/k
So use setcpu and use the profiles...that keeps my phone nice and cool during charging/sleeping modes.
So would I be able to use that even tho I haven't unlocked or rooted my N1?
Pretty sure SetCPU is a no-go if you don't have root access.
That's what I thought. Guess I have to root my phone.

Overclocking

I was wondering if anybody would be so kind as to give me some pros/cons about overclocking my phone. Or a link to a topic as I'm sure there already is one, I searched but could not find.
Thanks,

PROS: Your phone goes faster!
It goes slower while it's asleep, so more battery (as long as you program the profile in setcpu)!
CONS:Your phone might overheat.
Thanks man I appreciate the response. When you say overheat do you mean the battery, or the actual phone? haha

Idk just thought I should ask....
I just figure the phone has a failsafe. I have mine at 768 and only gets ridiculously hot when charging running Google navigation. Otherwise it's just slightly warmer. When it overheats the led flashes red green and I figure its slowing the charge or stopping it to compensate.
A computer will shutdown when the heat gets to an unmanageable level to prevent damage. I figure the phone would have something similar.

It doesnt go faster while its asleep.. It scales down like any other rom/kernel would when the phone is asleep.
If you really arent sure then dont ever use an OC'ing app. Just install the kernel and let it scale on its own.

Also the only thermometer thats close to the cpu is the battery. So its not the most accurate thing to watch since its not the actually cpu temps. Just a rough estimate. Also when it get to around 40 C then set the max clock down to around default clock speeds. Or simple just let the phone relax and dont touch it. You can also take the back cover off and let it get more air..
It doesnt get hot extremely easy, so its not like youll be sending a text and it gets hot. Its only after prolonged use or doing something thats keeping the cpu from not scaling down very much (game, tethering, or etc..)

I haven't noticed a difference setting my phone to 245mhz when it's asleep (well positively anyway). But when I unlock it is slow to a crawl, so I just set it 528mhz all the time and my battery life is unaffected but my phone is always very spunky.I don't have fresh toast on my phone so I haven't overclocked it yet (but may eventually)
I only had issues with overheating when charging, especially via USB to a computer. One commonly overlooked side effect is that Li-Ion batteries lose capacity faster at higher temperatures. The capacity degradation is a combination temperature, charge and number of charge cycles. The ideal situation is to be at 40% charge at 0C, but the hotter the battery, the more it degrades with time.

Phone gets super hot after 2-3 mins of gaming

So I've been playing Arcane Legends rpg game , the phone gets hot on the top back of the phone . Anyone with the same issue ? Gets even hotter with a case on it's ridiculous Phone is completely stock 4.2.1
It happens. It happened to me just today.

How much is "super hot"?? Install the app called GS Battery Monitor and see the temperature of your battery. If it is more than 40 then it's something to worry. Or else you are good.

Seems pretty normal, screen is on, graphics are cranking, its an online game too right?
Best you can do is if you were to be rooted you could try underclocking to limit the CPU, or limit it to less CPUs, from getting that high so it doesn't produce as much heat, or really as easily.

Stock kernel? No wonder. Even mine gets hot after browsing. Fixed by installing a custom kernel.

[Q] Overheating Problems [franco kernel | cm 10.1]

After having my phone for around a month, I (yesterday) decided to flip the switch and flashed myself cm10.1 and the latest franco kernel. Just now, I reached to pick up my phone (after letting it idle for around an hour and a half in my pocket), and burned my fingers. The thing is running at 46.5c when the highest it used to get for me was maybe 40-42 (watching a movie, or charging).
What do you guys think the cause is, and my best way for fixing (I dont want to go back to stock, but I will if I have to).
Thanks,

your device isnt overheating nor did it burn your fingers. human body temp is 37C, and it was sitting in your pocket at that temp, insulated, keeping warm. 46.5C will not burn you, ever. it could feel warm because the heat is escaping from the glass back to cool off. thats what its supposed to do. you have a quad core device, it WILL get warm.

is this a serious statement or sarcasm? lol.
while charging the battery can get hot, and the device can get really warm, especially if its being used at the slightest bit. besides, what is overheated, i mean what temp does it reach, battery and cpu?

my phone is currently charging and I'm posting this via phone.. so this is in no way sarcasm . it's showing battery temperature as 39 degree Celsius ( checked through *#*#4636#*#*) .. my fingers can feel the heat while I type this... though the heat is not too high but it's not negligible also.

think about this.. your body is 37C. 39C is a bump warmer. since your fingers are extremeties, they will be slightly cooler than the rest of your body. since they are a little cooler, your phone will feel warmer. but in reality, your battery temp is just normal, even relatively cool for being on the charger and being used.

Okay, I didn't mean literally 'burn', you're right. My point was that I picked it up and was shocked (figuratively ) by how hot it was.
Again, for the last entire month my phone (on stock) has never reached near this temperature before, even when It was actively running.
[Oh and jacket pocket, it wasnt on me. My point was that it was in a cool, dry, place not charging, and I wasnt using it].

Okay, so saying that makes me stop worrying its going to blow up (happened to my friend's moto milestone back in the day), but it's still a new occurrence to me, which cooincidentally happened right after a changed both my rom and my kernel from stock.
The office aircon is a breezy 24c no matter what day it is .
I was leaning more towards this questions, that I gathered from when i glossed over the two respective threads, but dont understand well enough to decide or check if they're relevant:
-could it be that the rom or the kernel overclocked my phone and thats why its running hotter?
-maybe theres a wake-lock (or partial lock or whatever its called), that had my phone on though it was being left alone?
-did the kernel mess with the radio so now it keeps jumping signals?
-was there an option for 'testicular irradiation' that I accidentally enabled?
Not even sure if these are the right questions to be asking. Definitely not sure what to do about it even if they are...

there could be 1000s of reasons that your device is running a little warmer today, really. it could all just be random too. as long as the battery stays below 55-60C(60C is the battery temp safety shutdown) and the cpu below 80C(95-100C is the cpu safety shutdown). you wont see those high battery or cpu temps unless your really pushing your device(cpu) or watching flash movies/playing intensive games while plugged in(battery). there are safety protocols set in your phone in case it really does overheat.

um, you run it at whatever speed you want. default, it boots up at 1026mhz, with all 4 core set as minimum, and thats recent. before that, it booted up 1458mhz hotplugging, which is still slightly underclocked. just because you have a choice of raising the cpu speed to 1836mhz, doesnt mean that is the kernel default. you should learn about what youre talking about first, before you say something silly.

Galaxy s8 Gets Hot

Hi i bought the device two days ago and whenever i use it (i start opening Facebook, instagram, WhatsApp and other apps) it gets Pretty warm in the right side or the screen and behind. The CPU reaches 50 degrees and sometimes 55 and the worries me. What should i do? Is it normal or should i return it? I previously had an Honor 7 and it reaches the same temps but it doesnt feel that warm at the touch, it Just gets warm in the bottom left corner.
the temp while i'm typing is 41C, outside its 33degrees C and inside(where i am now) its 24degrees.
I do not believe this is normal whatsoever. My S8+ has been one of the coolest-running Samsung phones I have ever owned. You might want to return/exchange it if that is possible.
I have not used/tested with any apps to determine actual Temps but it never gets hot. It gets warmer but not very hot (like my S7 Edge did) when using Gear VR.
Have you done the simple things like closing all apps & rebooting? Clearing cache, etc? Maybe some app is "stuck."

it is absolutely not normal
my first device share the same issue with your's
well i ask for a exchange, the new unit just go to 45 when running games, most of time it wouldn't even reach 40 degrees
but
new device came with new problems, red tints, home button problem
it's up to you
ask for replacement until you'er satisfy with it
I would get an exchange(Yeah right the real me would hold on to it until it melted because i'm lazy). So far this is the coolest smart device I have ever owned. Even when playing intense 3d games and emulators it only warms up a little.
Thanks Guys! I'm going to return it on Monday.

If you're constantly scrolling and opening posts the phone will get warm, Facebook isn't exactly a battery friendly app, but if you're stuck at a post and reading it for a while it shouldn't get warm, it really depends how you use the phone. I can get my phone warm using twitter too. My friends z5 with the sd810 gets toasty.

Mate. The CPU throttles when it reaches 80C. What are you worrying about?
I advise reading your manual, which specifically tells you that the device will heat up with use and the heatpipe is located on the top right section of the phone x)
The reason why it may feel hotter than your previous (?) phone is because the metal rim (and whole body) acts as a heat spreader and the heatpipe connects to it with a thermal pad.

Cpu temps keeps spiking up and down on any device that actually has a cpu.
What you need to look for is battery temp and not cpu temps. I consider battery temps a more steady measure of over heating rather than cpu as they dont spike.
Eitherways heavy bad background apps will make any device hot. Now if your just browsing on chrome with no background apps and your device temp ( battery temp ) is around 40c in a 20c room thats when ill be worried and exchange the device.
But hey thats just me
Gd luck !
