S4 & 4G - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Am planning to take this 4G connection from my ISP. The connection is not on my mobile, but via a 4G router and hence was just wondering ...
a) If I have a non 4G LTE capable phone device would I still get the same good 4G speed using my device with wifi?
b) If I had a 4G LTE capable device, would that get me faster faster speed with wifi?
Please note that in both cases internet will be over wifi.
c) If I take a 4G connection on a 4G LTE device, would that give me faster speeds than the 2 options above?
Am just preparing myself for the release of the S4 and wanted to know if I should opt for the 3G or the LTE device. Of course the price would finally influence the decision, but answers to the above may help me save a couple of bucks
Also, can someone tell me as of now, which of the S4s are better ... 9500, 9505, etc ... reason is which one has octa core and which supposedly performs better?
Thanks and Cheers

My Samsung Galaxy S2 3G Speeds Are Very Slow

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.
There are a couple of Indian specific threads that you'd be better off getting help in. This is the biggest one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995752
I would like to read feedback from folks around the world as well.
I've already gone through the mentioned Indian thread and I have to say, it requires a moderator.
Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side
thanks
thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless
just did a speedtest 133kbps/down 94k up , ridiculous :'(
Any suggestions or advices for the 3G problems
HI, I am also facing the same problem of 3G of low speeds any updates regarding this?
Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.

nexus 7 3g

I do not have data on my galaxy nexus because my phone line is paid by my compagnie, i am in the market for a tablet with 3g/4g conectivity.
what im wondering is if it''s worth it, 3g seem old and slow.but i love the NEXUS line.
or should i buy something else with 4g/lte ?
price is not a problem, only size, i don't want a 10inch tablet.
thx for your input guys!
3G HSPA+ or Evolved HSPA takes 3G into the range between 3G and 4G. Talking about theoretical speeds of 22Mbits/sec Up link and much greater down link.
Many providers are calling it 4G to prevent tower upgrades.
It's not a slow poke.

Thx i didint know it was hspa + which is plenty enough!
i tough it was the old 3g.
will defenetly buy it when it's released.

[Q] At&t HSPA+ Questions

I'm planning on getting the Nexus 4, and I am a bit concerned about data speeds without LTE on At&t. At&t coverage is good in my area (their map shows it as their "best" coverage, which I assume to be LTE). I have not used a phone with mobile data before (amazing, I know) and I am curious about how my experience is going to be. My searches seem to show about 5 Mb/s is about all I can hope for. Can someone tell me if this is accurate and, if so, how is this going to be for me? I don't plan on streaming video, but using Google Music to stream some of my music would be great. My primary use will be for loading webpages, cached youtube videos, emailing, and texting through google voice.
Go to ATT coverage map and look for your area(zip code). Here's an example of my area: http://www.wireless.att.com/coverag...2.22427198804337&lon=-71.08549506625758&sci=5
Remember when looking at map make sure you select data and only the very DARK blue is LTE and its only viewable at 120 miles and closer on their maps. "best" coverage is for voice not data and it does not mean LTE.
Download speeds on HSPA+ are fine on ATT for what you want to do.
Oh, there's a tab.
Oh, okay, I didn't notice that data tab. I only have non-LTE service anyway, and switching carriers isn't currently an option, so I think the N4 will be a great choice for me. Just gotta watch out for those hard floors and internal storage limits.
Thanks!
I would agree that TMobile may be faster with it's 42 BUT BUT... The other issue is the frequency it runs on... At&t seems better for penetrating through buildings and such. T Mobile in my experience and what I have seen in my area not so great. At work I know that TM signal is not good at all and data you can forget inside.
At&t is pretty good however even with the HSPA yet I also am spoiled now with the LTE so strong in CS were I am.
I am truly torn on what to do. At this point thinking of waiting a short period to see if the G on AT&T gets the bootloader unlocked or how good the reception and such is with AT*T here with the Nexus 4....I am also planning on getting the Nexus 7 with Data also.
Also wondering IF being a quad core and 2GB RAM is this will make a network run better or not....
In dc metro area fastest I've ever seen on at&t is 6mbps. On tmobile I've seen 21mbps.

Good thing Tmobile is refarming it's network to use the same freq as ATT!

Tmobile vs ATT

So I have been using my nexus 4 over tmobile network and lately I have been having really horrible signal with t mobile. I sometimes do not receive calls and some of my incoming and outgoing texts are delayed.
I am thinking about taking the switch to att however I have a few questions.
1. I currently use tmobiles HSDPA network and get average 5-15 Mbps while using it. Does att have a comparable network or would I only be able to get 3g (1-3mbps).
2. I know that some people are using lte on their nexus4. I know that att has lte in my area, would I be able to connect to the lte signal in my area assuming that I use the .33 radio?
3. Is there anything setting wise I would need to change in setting or would I simply put my sim card in from att and be all set?
Thanks for the feedback, its much appreciated!

It would help to know your location.
Coverage and data speeds vary greatly based on regions and specific cities.

1. AT&T has a slower HSPA network than T-Mobile. The speed is sufficient enough but it's just not that fast compare to T-Mobile's speeds.
2. If the Nexus 4 is able to detect the 1700 and 2100mhz radio frequency band (Which AT&T has.), then yes it should be able to run on LTE.
3. Here's the guide to set up LTE.

Decent phone for around $200 US

I'm looking to move on from my old atrix 4g and would like to find a good phone for around $200 give or take that runs CM 10 stable and with all the features working. It seems like it's hard to find one that fits this bill so I'm asking the crowd here to get some ideas.
1. Runs CM JB 10 hopefully / stable / all features work
2. Capable of taking advantage of T-Mobiles US LTE or HSPA+ for fast internet speeds
3. Has internal SD slot
4. Dual Core
5. Hopefully around 8G internal storage.
Thanks!

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_blaze_4g_t769-4420.php ..it does not say HSPA+. What speeds are you getting on your phone and which carrier? I really like this phone but wish it had a little more internal ram and wonder if 4G will be enough for me...I should have put that in the OP.
Which ROM are you running on it, can you post the link so I can read up on the rom?
Thanks for taking the time to post!

Did you read the entire page at gsmarena.com? The speed on that page says "HSDPA 42Mbps, HSUPA". For $200 and you want LTE? You might want to wait a couple years for the price of those phones to come down and then buy. The ROM that I am using is AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989825

Yes I read it which is why I mentioned I did not see the HSPA+. I'm guessing the 42mbps is hspa+? Still new to the whole mobile world so please forgive. Your right ..I think finding a good LTE phone for my price is a little ambitious. My atrix 4g on T-Mobile should be hspa+ capable but running speed test I only get 5-6 mbps down and 1 up so I wonder why it's not much faster when it's capable?
Thanks!

Atrix 4G is manufactured for AT&T network and, according to data specs at gsmarena.com
Data GPRS Class 12 (4+1/3+2/2+3/1+4 slots), 32 - 48 kbps
EDGE Class 12
Speed HSDPA, 14.4 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps
WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
Bluetooth Yes, v2.1 with A2DP, EDR
USB Yes, microUSB v2.0
Given the data specs, your phone won't get HSDPA+ and although you can use on a gsm network, the phone's radio (aka modem) is not designed for the t-mobile network and that's why you get slower speeds.
