[Q] Best way to root and flash JB on 2.3.4? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend just gave me this phone, as he bought the HTC One. It's running 2.3.4. I have above average experience with rooting/flashing on Samsung devices, but never HTC. Could someone point me in the direction of the easiest way to root this phone and get prepared to flash? I'd prefer not to setup adb and all that jazz on my PC. Any help would be appreciated. Also, maybe a tip on the most stable version of jelly bean. Thanks!

You'll need adb to downgrade. No way around it. You can only get S-Off from Froyo. Use the guide linked in the thread RIGHT BELOW this one. Once downgraded, use the ultimate S-Off thread stickied in development.

[Q] MT4G - Still no "One click" ROOT methods?

So am posting this for a friend who is attempting to root his MyTouch4G. I'm on a DX and it has been a cake-walk, wondering if there is not an easier method for him?
I am reading through all these threads, just want to make sure we're not missing the obvious. Any and all help appreciated.
Wrong thread brother

Yeah I guess this could've gone in the "General". Sorry, am reading as much as I can and as quickly as I can, I guess I'm just surprised there hasn't been any rooting methods that are somewhat automated or streamlined.

I used the Gfree/Visionary method and it took like 10 minutes. It is pretty easy if you follow the instructions.

One click root teaches you nothing. If you can't bother learning how to root it the way many of us have before you, then you learn nothing. JMHO

I can certainly respect that, but this wasn't about "learning", it was about the simplest/easiest way to root. Again, asking for a friend but thanks for the input.
Use gfree to S-OFF, flash eng hboot, then Visionary to get "root" in the OS. As simple as you are going to see at this stage of the game.

Honestly, not sure how much easier you want it. The gfree s-off method is pretty straight forward. In my opinion if you can't follow those instructions you're probably better off not rooting at all. Rooting isn't a very difficult process but having even a little bit of knowledge about what you're doing will help to ensure you maintain a working phone. If you proceed without any understanding you are just setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment.
I just put one together, but I have no way to test it. Once I can find some willing testers, or unroot my phone and test it, You'lll have the absolute simplest way to root your phone.
I might be willing to test it...

Right now, I need to find out if the stock rom has root rights in adb shell by default after temp rooting. Once I know the answer to that, i'll let you know.
Cool, thanks.
Do you have adb working? It one click but you need adb setup and all the drivers installed. if so, it may be ready.
No unfortunately, I don't... I'll look into it according to that "everything" link and try to get it set up now.
Cool. Let me know when you're ready.
Okie doke, I downloaded and installed ADB and through the command prompt ADB recognizes my device...is that what I needed?
Yeah. Check your pm.
Is it really that hard to install visionary & terminal emulator, unzip a folder, do some commands and a step or two for root....

No, but it is when you try and script it all together. lol. I think it should work, we'll know after he finishes testing.

G2: is there a one click perm root?

Is there something like unrEVOked out? I really like how easy it is to root on a EVO and how any unexperienced person can root there phone without much hassle.
HTC seriously ramped up the security on the Vision (G2 and Desire Z). It's not a one-click thing to root, sorry. But it's not hard if you follow the instructions carefully.

Also: don't be tempted by visionary. It has a very high chance of failure aka bricking your phone!!!

Nope there are none. Well you can easily prem root your phone with s-off pretty easily without adb. You should read android development section. i used the old way of getting s-off cause its the fastest way... but if you want the safest way gfree method will do.
Follow the guide on the WIKI of XDA. It's simple and easy. I got it and it's my first time rooting anything. Just read everything carefully and good luck!
Also, if it makes you feel any better, I also read that the method posted on the WIKI page results in very few bricked devices (if any at all for that matter!). Go for it!
Does anyone know what version of ADB/SU should be used to Root the new Desire Z OTA Update? And if this is possible wo Downgrade? I see the Wiki is not too updated

Any version of adb.

If you are talking about the 1.72 OTA then you can use psneuter to get root, rage won't work at that level. That assumes you already have used gfree at a previous version to get radio S-OFF. Otherwise you have to downgrade.

its okay if you want TEMP
Easy enough to do if you take your time, and well worth it. I had never used ADB before but following along slowly got it to work (took a while to figure out to move all the files I wanted to 'push' into the adb directory!); and although I lost all my games progress (the horror of having to start Angry Birds over again!), I got back all my texts etc. from Google after moving back up to 1.72. There are backup programs in the market that should backup your apps if you want also.
Well worth it if you need root for MarketEnabler like I did; ClockworkMod is nice too for backing up.

Follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886023 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Once you have got s-off and you upgrade again to 1.72 follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10574813&postcount=329 (read from post 301 if you have changed your recovery image) to re-root.
You could always write a script to make it automatic, bundle it with the neccesary files, and share it.

[Q] Installing a custom ROM

Hey MyTouch 4g users, I'm quite new to this and I've read the tutorial threads about rooting and etc. But I'm still confused. I'm trying to flash a custom ROM for MyTouch 4g T Mobile version. Do I need to have ADB Fastboot installed before I can root my device? I plan on following the True PermaRoot method. I dont want to miss anything. If anybody can simply point out what I need to do in a simple order that'll be very helpful. Thank you in advance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
EVERYTHING is here. You just have to read. And if it's not clear enough - perhaps you should reconsider rooting until it is.
Welcome to the forum. Don't mind some of the cranky people, they haven't gotten laid in months. Yes you should have ADB set up, there is a great guide for it in the development section. It will make your life much easier. Once that is complete just follow the instructions to the "T" for the rooting method and you will be good to go. It is actually very simple.

You just made my day low hahahaha
As for rooting (not just gunna make a useless post) if your going to use the gfree method honestly you do not need anything besides your phone visionary a terminal emulator and some bandwidth to work with. In my mind that is by FAR the easiest.

mt4g is on android 2.2 - how to root?

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forums, just picked up a mt4g yesterday. After some reading I see that you need 2.2.1 to root your phone with visionary. I'm outside the US and can't do the OTA, is there a way to root a 2.2 version? Or get 2.2.1 on my phone?
Thanks!
I the same issue. Go to big sticky in mt4g dev section and look for a guide called "force update to 2.2.1" or something. It was my first time using adb so the direction could be a little confusing for you as well. If you have any problems with the guide, feel free to ask and ill get back to you when I can

Just root via gfree. You won't need the update. Follow this video for gfree.

BE CAREFUL with your phone. The ./gfree method will root phones with bad and good eMMC chips. You should hop over to the "post your serial number" thread and see if you have a good one or a bad one. neither one is fool proof. But the bad eMMC chip is pretty much a ticking timebomb.

The method this person posted also includes the engineering hBoot, which is not required to flash anything.
and if the one line code is interned incorrectly you will brick your device
