im a big fan of nief's rom comparison, and i think the same concept could be applied to Kernels. I know performance and Battery Life will vary by ROM, but if we get enough responses the different ROMS wont make too big of a difference. THis is just a draft, feel free to message me with suggestions or info.

I think these comparison charts are a waste of time to be honest. The only way it would be effective would be if it was the same person doing all the testing, under the same conditions (ROM used, tries done per benchmark, specific time after reboot, etc.)
With kernels especially, the ROM you're using it with will play a major role in benchmark and stability yields. Not to mention the what apps you have running in the background.

I just put in an order in for a Wildfire, and of course have since been looking up all the apps and mods etc that people tend to install. My main question is about the battery life, roms and overclocking.
Is the battery life really that bad, is it worth modding anything to improve it?
What are the benefits of changing to a different rom, and are Wildfires brickable? (excuse me if I'm using the term 'ROM' incorrectly). For example, to mess around with the UI do I need to root it and all that jazz?
Is overclocking advised/necessary? I read that it is stable as long as you don't over do it, but is this mostly for people who just do it because they simply can?
I apologise in advance for all the questions - I've spent a decent amount of time googling around, but as usual definitive answers are hard to come by. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I own both a wildfire and a desire, i use the wildfire as my main phone ( the desire for showing off). The wildfire has a good battery discharge rate...meaning it will get u through a good day and half of heavy use unlike the desire (half a day). I change my roms very reguarly, say once every week to take advantage of improved and updated software by the devs on xda. Trying different roms will also expose you to different type of kernels, some are faster and more stable than others. No your wildfire wont brick if you follow the guides written by the xda devs correctly. Overclocking tends to make the overall rom appear more responsive but you can go without it. I always overclock after flushing new rom. Hope that helped a little bit.

The battery life of the wildfire pwns most of the devices running android today , i get about 2 days to 3, or perhaps more if i BARELY use it. mostly it lasts for longer than a day, as i like to use the wifi/3g etc.
yeah to change to a custom rom you need to root. benefits = faster, more features, extra cool stuff, themes etc.
Nah overclocking isn't necessary, i just do it cause i want to, and it makes the phone faster , but don't overclock to max speed otherwise your phone might freeze.

I was intrigued as well. There are rules pertaining to kernels here in xda. If a dev won't comply, the thread gets to be closed down.

I don't know what I expected actually, my experience on any forum is that most people don't research on their own, they come to forums and if the answer isn't there, they give up. I love googling for new undiscovered gems. :thumbup:

I am sincerely blown away by the spike in interest... Just wow!
In the space of two months I have moved twice across Europe and am currently getting settled in my new home (and waiting for the darn broadband).
I can assure you two things; ShinTo Kernel & PreCog.me are not a hobby.
They are my daily work focus (as in my daily job).
I could extend myself talking about the great projects I have but I am the kind of person that prefers to prove with facts so... Keep an eye on PreCog.me

ShinTo Kernel v028a005 has over 50 updates/enhancements/fixes and it is compiled with the latest bleeding edge Linaro Toolchain GCC 4.9.2
I also fixed the cosmetic issue of not displaying the kernel name correctly in the TW settings app.
If there are no unforeseeable issues, it should be released around the middle of the week

Why?
Your setup and phone use is completely unique. Anyone else's battery life will not give you the slightest clue as to what yours might be.
Flash it and see for yourself.

Benchmarks are different from device to device. They're not a true statement about a kernels performance. I get insane battery, I get lightning fast speeds and I love using the kernel. This is a discussion of the kernel in this thread, that's why I started it. This is not an official Dev thread, that will come later from the Dev. Of you're interested in it, head over to precog.me and read the official kernel page. :thumbup:

Actually it can serve as basis. For example if that user is able to achieve 10hrs SOT, then at least I know that the kernel is capable of going that far. No matter how you force a kernel, if it has bad battery life then it can never achieve high SOTs. It actually us very helpful for one to post battery stats because I can then adjust and try to get close or even surpass the user's settings.

Fair enough, but I still disagree.
For example - on my last cycle I got nearly 8 hours SOT and about 1 day 13 hours on one charge. What can one infer from that? I say another user can infer very little, there are way too many variables.
I use Alliance ROM. This was my first cycle with this kernel. I use only 100% black wallpapers, system, desktop, and lockscreen are all black. One homescreen. Brightness about 40% except for videos. Tasker is set so that screen off=WiFi and data off, and I use a flip cover. I've deleted over 100 apps. I've removed about 25 autostarts with SD Maid, usually only use about 750 mb at startup. I never sync anything whatsoever. Two widgets, clock/weather and music. Location is always off unless I'm navigating.
I could go on, there's more, but I hope you see my point. And that's before the vast amount of kernel tweaks I've set up with Faux Clock, which I'll probably tweak further. And I haven't even mentioned my usage....
With further cycles I'll probably squeeze more juice out of it, who knows?
If you think this will give you any idea about your battery life, fine. But I can't see how it can.
As for benchmarks - a waste of time if you're comparing with another device, only remotely useful if you're comparing performance with different setups on the same phone, IMHO.
The past few weeks I've been using CM12.1 as my daily driver but I started to miss the speed and functionality of Sense 7. Not to mention the look. I'mhere to gather opinions on which rom you personally think has the best battery life. Sense 7 Roms only, please.

"Best" is very subjective. You can compromise many things for battery life like functionality and speed. Keep in mind that users have totally different battery lives while even on the same ROM.
This is something only you can judge based on your usage.

Please don't post irrelevant information. I realize that. However, I'd like to see a rom that many people view as having good battery life. I'll pick that one to try first. I'm asking for everyone's personal experience and opinion, not factual information.

IMO
S.ROM has really great battery life. It's stock ported from m9. SkyDragon is also pretty good as well and has more features built in.
I think that it's less of the rom, and more how you use it, and what apps you use. I.E. using greenify, powernap and amplify, you can get decent battery life from anything.
You talk about irrelevant information, actually this whole thread is irrelevant because there is an existing battery thread already and the rules on this forum suggest you to use existing ones over new created ones.

Hello, i am rooted with stock rom 4.5.10.
Can anyone suggest me a good kernel that could help with the performance of the device. or should i stick with the stock one.
Depends on your usage. If U want a even better performance is ElementalX a good one. Easy flashing process with AROMA options (ability to overclock)!
No such thing as best, just flash a few and see what you feel brings you the best performance
Hi, i am in the same case of you, i have flashed "simpleGX 1.11 kernel" to have performance and a really good battery life. And yes, it is very smooth and i stay 3 days with my battery charge..! for me it is a very good kernel for the moment. i think to try blue spark kernel but for the moment i am happy with SimpleGX kernel...

3days?? may be very light to moderate use?
Blu Spark is designed for performance. Boeffla for stability and Franco to extend battery life. Usually kernels are designed to provide something different than the stock kernel and the description at the top of the thread for the kernel should give you an idea of what the dev was trying to do. I honestly wouldn't recommend ElementalEx. It's a very vanilla kernel that is available for almost every device but they don't do much to optimize the kernel for individual phones. I use Blu Spark. Personally I think you are better off with kernels that are made for stock OOS.

I did unlock/root/flash roms on 30-35 devices, for friends/family and myself.
And even if XDA members do not like ''best rom/kernel'' threads, its very usefull for a quick search, because i.e. my friend want simply a stable rom and I don't want to test every roms or read the thread's 200 pages.
Wihout pointing the ''best rom/kernel'' you might maybe help by pointing the cons and pros .

After reading the Franco XDA interview, he was pointing the fact that there's not much work to do on kernel in general, because they are out-of-the box already good.
My first device was a desireZ, with froyo 2.2, back in the days, kernel works was badass, and make huge changes to the devices, but now, I agree that there's not much difference, at least for now, since this OP5 is crazy fast.
I do use Franco kernel, as per Franco's thread, he's stating better battery life. well, hard to tell , since he won't achieve 125% better battery life... It might go around 10%. Which is good, but hard to tell on day to day usage, since 10% is about my usgae precision time if I compare all my usage over each days.
So far so good, no cons.

Worst answer ever? I'll admit I could have shared my setup for OP to try as well, but other than that, "worst answer ever" is a bit dramatic.
XDA members don't like the "best ROM/Kernel" threads because of my original point, there really isn't a 'best', it is subjective to your needs/usage. A kernel I find to be an absolute beast in performance can end up being mediocre at best to you. And again, that all boils down to each user's unique usage.
Telling a user what works best for you isn't going to be as good as the user trying it out for themselves; getting that first-hand experience with a certain kernel will give that user a much better idea, and that's why I said flash a few and see what they like best (no need to flash every single one or read through 200 pages...).
Like I said, I admit I could have shared my ROM/Kernel combo originally to give OP a starting point, but that doesn't take away from my main point(s).
Anyway, I don't mean to get into a whole debate about this with you, a handful of users have already responded and hopefully OP has found a kernel they prefer.
For what it's worth, I've used both Lightning and Blu_Spark, both have provided me with excellent performance and battery life (On PureFusion).
