how can i root the stock 2.3.6 rom and how can i install cmw recovery? where can i download the seock roms?

There are several guides out there to root Nexus S. General section (sticky threads).
Also, you can head up to Nexus S hacks. They have a great tutorial webpage with videos about rooting your phone.

This is only for i9020A. But oldblu910 has added a reference for all devices. Make sure you use the proper guide since it can get pretty ugly if you flash another one on your device.

Also the dev sections are split for the cdma (Nexus s 4g) and the GSM models (Nexus S)
So just stick to looking around in the nexus s dev forum for correct roms and radios for your phone good luck, and its super easy. THe ony thing is to ge the proper drivers for your phone, I have used pdanet to locate and install drivers when rooting. Good Luck

[Q] nexus 4 newbie thread about rooting and other important questions

hello, i have one week with my nexus im very happy with it but i would like to root it, to test other stuff on my nexus....
but im afraid that google can get mad..
will google detect if i install other "os" on my nexus
will i loose my warranty if i install other os or gain root access?
if i get root access or install another "os" or "rom"...can i reset my phone
and get it like i just bough it?
iis the official nexus 4 android 4.x image always stored on my nexus 4 so i can reset the device anytime i want?
i think i may want to reset it if i want to get rid of lots of stuff or if i regret of having root or other roms
and i want to keep receiving updates from google.
one night i almost dared to root it..with one click...but i want first to have these questions answered
is google aware about each device about being hacked, rooted and dont give support if install modded roms
or i just simple reset and no one knows if i hacked or not.?

I just recently rooted my phone as well..
As far as I'm aware, there is no way Google can tell if you have rooted, modded, hacked your phone, unless you give it to them in that state. What is reassuring though is that you can reset your phone exactly like it was from the box. You can unroot your phone, lock the bootloader and many of the guys around here will have links to the stock image if you require it.

Toolkit vs OneClickRoot.com
I am reading up on rooting the nexus 4 and was thinking I would use the one click root function in the toolkit by mskip, but I have seen the website oneclickroot.com which says this: Remember: One Click Root is 100% guaranteed to work and the process is completely risk-free. It is currently in beta and will apparently be running properly in a couple of weeks.
Is this legit and is it really any safer than the toolkit??

need to post 10 times, so I'll answer even though you probably are past this. I used the toolkit. I couldn't find anything 1-click for the nexus. Maybe I just missed it.

[Q] Gummy Android 4.4 - [11/14/13] - Root access

Hi,
I installed this rom from Nov 14th, and I couldn't get root.
I tried flashing it from CWM, but still, no root access.
SuperSU says it couldn't install the binaries.
Does anyone has the same problem, or better yet, a solution?
This rom is really fast, the only thing stopping me from using it as a daily driver is not having root access.
I appreciate your help in advance.

Why not download the CM rom from their site. If you are i337 thinks is already loki'd
I run the 11/13 one no issues
Not sure on your root issue as haven't flashed Gummy. A little too aosp for me atm.

nightlies are going to work ok one night and not ok the next as they are changing things around alot with the builds till they get a stable release

Does CM comes rooted? or is it a method to root it? Does everything works? I read about some broken features, like bluetooth, IRDA, WIFI and Camera.
My only issue with gummy, is that I can't get root. Everything else works fine.

[Q] Root Iconia A500

Can someone please help me. I have an Acer iconia a500 that I want to install a custom ROM onto. When I follow the instructions to find the cpuid and sbk. I am told the file doesn't exist. Holding down the power and volume up buttons end in an android graphic with a triangle error. I have tried every tool I could find to help with no result. A lot of the links now link you to malware. I have a galaxy s2 which I have rooted numerous times. My aim is to install omnirom KitKat final version with root access. I have also done a factory reset and I have ICS 4.0.3
I am starting to think that there might be a fault with my tablet.

Sad to say development stopped shortly after it started on this device

I have found that omni ROM still supports this device. My main problem seems to be that I can't boot into recovery mode. It just comes up with an error graphic. I am happy with the tablet for what I use it for but am finding more apps are incompatible. Hence why I want to upgrade the ROM.

I too am looking to root an A500 for a friend and I am running into walls.

When you see the android laying down and has a punctuation mark on top.....it means your using stock recovery!

No tool that I have come across is working or downloading. I am only getting malware junk like "EZ Downloader". I have the CPUID and SBK but can't find any software tool that still downloads properly.

Looking for advice from existing SAC23 Note 5 Port users

I just got my Note 4 and it's running stock N910PVPS4COK1. I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs with this phone, coming from the S4 (Rooted, TRWP 2.8.7.0, BlissPop v4.03). I think I want to end up running the SAC23 Note 5 port with root access.
I want to do this right the first time, so I'm looking to get some advice from veterans in this area and steer clear of any problems / issues that I might encounter.
1. Is running the Note 5 port going to effect the ability to use Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay on this device if I head down this path?
2. Do I need to and should I, root and install TWRP first in order to flash the SAC23 Note 5 port? Or do I flash the port directly from Odin onto stock?
3. What is the best way to approach and what are the best versions / revisions I should be using? (Odin version, TWRP version, SuperSU version, SAC23 Note 5 port version)
4. In the SAC23 Note 5 Port thread there is mention of PMing for the latest version. Is v2.1 the latest or do I need to PM to get a later version?
Any advice through your direct experience with this phone and port would be greatly appreciated.

Search these forums. ALL these questions have been asked AND answered. I just don't think a complete "hold your hand" is the right approach. Read, read and read some more and than make your choice. There is an entire forum dedicated to rooting your device. Just search and look around. Good luck!

I have read. How else would I know the things I am asking about? The threads for these subjects were started at a time when a different Baseband was being used and things change from where you start from. I'm looking for succinct answers from people who would like to share their experience in this area. No offense, but basically you've added nothing other than a "Good Luck". So thanks for that, and same to you.

If u know anything about android you need a root your device for any custom rom, as far as the new version yes you need to ask for an invite to the hangout for the latest version which is not 2.1, i believe android pay does not allow a rooted device to use it so its tricky, Twrp in my experience is the best recovery

The N5 port automatically brings SU baked in, you need to be rooted so root first and odin a rooted stock base suck as OK1 which is latest make sure to update prl and profile before flashing the port n5

Thank you very much. Thats exactly what I wanted to know. I will odin Freeza stock OK1 kernel with root support for a systemless root and update the profile & PRL before flashing the Note 5 port.
I was not aware that a port & a custom ROM were the same, but it makes perfect sense.
Your excellent point about the PRL update sparks another question. I'm on Ring+ and had to tweak my APNs to get 3G and LTE to work on CM based ROMs for my S4.
Are there APN issues with the Note 5 port like are found with the CM based ROMs?
