Nope. Sammy can go take a hike with their 10.1.
You get a bigger screen, but that's the only major benefit. The Nexus 7 has a better CPU (Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2, quad core vs dual), and is probably going to have a better development scene (however, I have no idea on the current state of development on the GT 10.1).
Edit: Hmm, it also seems to get cellular and rear camera. If you want cellular, and have a want for a rear camera, I don't see it as that bad of a deal.
No, I've never liked 10" tablets, iPads or otherwise. The N7 is the perfect size for me.
Don't need the cellular since I can tether to my HOX, and taking pictures or video with a tablet makes you look like an idiot.
Yeah I like that it has a rear can but do t really need it I have an s3. But I really like the bigger screen and as fas as the development I already feel too caught up with my s3 that I just flashed paranoid android to my n7 and left it alone.
I guess I just wanna feel good about giving up a newer product for an older model

If you can sell the Tab for more than the cost of the Nexus 7, then it might be worth it to make the trade, sell the Tab, and then buy a new Nexus 7.

The Tab 10.1 is a nice device. Its a generation behind in specs. I liked my 10" Transformer but it had a micro SD card and HDMI out. I found it tedious to lug around and eventually stopped using it because of such. Everytime I wanted to use it, it was dead.
I sold my transformer for $200. The N7 was $250+tax. Not sure what the Tab sells for but they are probably being flooded in the market since the 10" Note is out.
Sammy stopped updating the Tab a long time ago. I'm not sure if it even officially got ICS let alone jelly bean. The N7 has JB and will get KeyLime Pie when its released and probably LoliPop.
Tell him to sell it over in the Market and pick up a N7.

I've always hated larger tablets... once you hit 10" tablets I find little reason to not just get a laptop and be done with it. While the N7 is smaller, it's very workable. We're remodeling some areas of our house, and I keep a few pictures and measurement notes down in my N7. When I'm at Lowes, it's nice to pull out the N7 and get a better idea of what I'm facing at home. Since the N7 fits in my back pocket, it's only another +1 to that court.
That's just my 2c though. I've talked to some people who love 10" tablets. I personally don't, and on that premise alone I wouldn't do the trade. That being said, you're also swapping out for slightly older hardware too. Nothing wrong with that if it's worth it, but I see no compelling reason that I personally would do that trade.

thats the first thing i want to say to you.
i am ex tab 10.1 owner.
the performance is TERRIBLE!!!!
i started using from stock honeycomb 3.1
its laggy beyond words, and i was forced to learn to root and flash custom roms that are 3.2
things got SLIGHTLY better but it was still laggy.
simple things like typing on keyboard, bringing up on screen keyboard, scrolling are still choppy.
then ICS came, and i flash various customs like AOKP and CM9
things got better again, overall UI is acceptable, no where near buttery smooth but still ok.
however only the UI smoothness improved in ICS, apps, games, any slightly 3D games will play in "slow motion" or "stop frame" style.
the tegra2 just dont cut it. its a dissapointment.
i sold my tab10,1 the moment i saw google IO announce nexus 7.
nexus 7 is superior in every way then that tab10.1 in terms of performance, responsiveness.
the only weakness is the small screen, but that gives it another benefit which is better portability.
the tab 10,1 browser crashes on a daily basis.
memory management is terrible even on ics.
try load FB desktop page on tab 10,1 stock browser, keep scrolling down,
as the FB page loads more newsfeeds, the scrolling becomes soo laggy, and it will start FC eventually.
NEVER trade your nexus 7 for tab10.1. you will surely regret it.
I actually did the opposite, sold my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and got the N7. Main reason was the weight and portability, I lasted 30 minutes with the 10.1 in the bath and my arms got tired. With the N7, I can watch movies anywhere, holding anyway I want and it feels great. Plus it's much more snappier (I did install a CM10 nightly on the 10.1 which was much better than its stock ICS but wasn't as great).
Nexus 7 is the best Android tablet out there in my opinion. Not just the best 7 inch, the best. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to tech. I've had an Acer Iconia 10" and 7", Transformer prime, Galaxy tab 2, and now this. Not quite every tablet on the market but a pretty decent cross section. I've also had a close look at a few other tabs.
The only thing that comes close is the transformer prime. That thing is ok but it's harder to hold, much heavier and the dock seems like a nice idea but ends up being a pita in practice.
This thing is a little pocket rocket, very powerful whilst being very easy to hold even for long periods and extremely portable.
By the way the galaxy tab is ****. Samsung don't even bother to support it so it was still on honeycomb when I last checked two weeks ago.

So, I'm thinking about buying a tablet.
My main goal is to have a biggest, more comfortable device for web browsing to complement my galaxy nexus.
I was thinking about a nexus 7, but being too close on size to my nexus, made me consider a 10 inch model.
I liked the fact that the nexus 7 is updated by Google and runs stock android, but there seems to be a good community of support for Samsung tabs, and with ROMs like cm9 and cm10, that might not be the deal breaker.
I also looked at the Acer a700, because of its screen. The high res is really appealing, but the price is around 400.
I can get a sweet deal on a tab 10.1, for 200 Euros. So, is it a good bet today?

The reason I'm interested in the tab 10.1 is mainly the price.
At this time I don't know if I would use a tablet all that much.
At first I'm guessing I would just use it in the couch to do some web browsing.
When I go out, I usually just take my nexus in my pocket and it pretty much covers my on the go needs.
If I have a tablet, I might take out out sometimes, but my fear is not using it enough. That's why I am not thinking about a tf700 or iPad 3. I just think I would not use them enough and would probably feel sorry for spending 600 on a device to sit on the shelf...
Anyway, does the tab 10.1 still holds it's own against those tegra 3 tablets?
How is web browsing with the screen's low PPI?

I got my wife a Tab 10.1 on clearance ($250) a couple of months ago. I bought my Nexus 7 at the same time. The only time there's a difference between us performance-wise is 3d gaming. All other times there's no real difference.
EDIT: She's very happy with the device for web browsing.

can you tell me your opinion about the difference in PPI from both models, since they both have the same resolution, but the nexus is smaller?

A modded 10.1 with performance tweaks is a joy to use. Battery life is sick @ 7000mah too. I have one for myself and one for the wife and they're wonderful. The kernel I'm running is OC'd to 1.4GHz and GPU @ 400 so while it's still not a match for newer devices, 3d games are still running nicely. A build.prop tweak for increasing buffer size will make web browsing even more enjoyable and most custom roms account for that, I've found.
In portrait mode the tab is still a bit wide...if you have long thumbs you shouldn't have any issues. If you were cursed with bitty digits stick with landscape and key the way you normally would.
I don't know anything about the Tegra 3 devices but I can tell you about my experience with the GT7500 . The main reason I got it was for Web browsing and watching video content on my daily commute. I really like using using this device and I may be imagining it but the display seems crisper since ICS updated. If you can get one really cheap I say buy it

I think it is an option, is fast, convenient and runs android. The only think i guess should be reconsidered, is the price since with the introduction of the Kindle Fire HD, its price is now prohibitive.
If you can get it for under 250, I would think so. If you're a spec freak, you might prefer a quad core but you'll pay a lot more for a ten incher.
It depends on what you plan on doing on the tablet.
Yes, I can get it under 250 and I just plan on using it for web browsing, tapatalk, some note taking, videos... no gaming. Just maybe the occasional angry birds type of game.

ASUS is a better choice..bang for the buck.
Google Nexus is pretty sweet also.

I know it is not state of the art, but all I want is a tablet to web browse on the couch or on the coffee shop.
I am also thinking about an original Motorola xoom. It is almost the same specs as the tab 10.1, but it runs stock android without the need for custom ROMs.
If I get any of the two cheap enough, maybe I could resell them in a couple of months and then pick a better 2013 tablet without much loss.
And until then I could have a nice tablet to browse...
Thoughts?
Does a 1920x1200 screen make a huge difference in browsing experience? Is it worth twice the money?

Argos have been knocking them out at "half price" in the UK. Mainly 3G models left for home delivery. Likely to be as rare as hens teeth in store. I've ordered a 16GB 3G model for £250 (it's being delivered tomorrow ). Seems like good value to me.

I can tell you that prior to the ICS update, I was very unhappy with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It was frustratingly slow, and using it was not a pleasant experience. Then I bought a Nexus 7 and totally fell in love with it. I did end up tweaking it with Nova launcher, but did not root it. After the ICS update I still wasn't happy with the performance of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Then I added Nova launcher and the same tweaks as for the Nexus 7. Did not root the Galaxy tablet either. And the performance seems to have improved so I am no longer complaining. However, I have to say that I still rarely use the 10" tablet. For me the 7" form factor and the higher pixel density works better. Or the weight. The 10" tablet never leaves the house, and rarely leaves the bedroom. The 7" tablet goes everywhere. I would recommend giving some thought to what size works for you best. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages. The 10" tablet should be better at note taking. I've seen lots of comments that the 10" should be better for videos and web browsing, but that hasn't been my experience. The Nexus 7 seems to have more apps available for it. For example, Flipboard is available for the Nexus 7, but not for the Galaxy tab. (It works fine on the Galaxy tablet, you just can't get the apk from the Google Play store.) If I had $250 to spend and did not have either tablet, I would either buy the Nexus 7, or save up for a better 10" tablet. I don't think the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 is worth $250, not when you can get a tablet that works better for $199.
For the usage you describe either the galaxy tab 10.1 or the xyboard would suffice (the later having microSD expandability). If the Asus Transformer TF300 is in the same price range the it is worthy of a look too (tegra 3), though I'm not sure what the status of development is for that device.
It has taken a long time for development to get to the point that it has for the galaxy tab 10.1 due to how long Samsung decided to wait to release ICS. CM9 development is far along with CM10 still needing work. There are some great devs here as in other device forums.
As for screen resolution one would expect that despite the color accuracy issues of the nexus 7's screen the higher pixel density of that panel would render text better and in my comparison between the two (I own both) that is the case so I would expect no different from a 1080p screen on a 10-inch form factor. That said the 10.1 does have a very nice panel and it's adequate for the use you describe.
Its great that you're doing the research so that you enter into your purchase eyes wide open. Know that you're buying into an aging platform and make sure you can live with the tradeoffs that come with that in order to get the lower price you're looking for.

In regard to the nexus 7, it is a device that is also on my mind. Mainly because as I said, I love my nexus phone and the whole nexus experience of stock android and updates from Google.
Does who own both, how is the web browsing on the 7? Does the higher PPI makes up for the smaller screen?
How is using nexus 7 vs a smartphone like the galaxy nexus? Very different? Or is it a close experience?

i have had my note for almost a year now - generally all pretty good
but for some things i am thinking about the nexus 7
maybe for a bigger ebook reader - kindle / BBC news / Flipboard etc- i have a lot of books which would benefit perhaps on a bigger screen
Tegra 3 - one of the reasons why i would like the nexus 7 - some games can only be played on a tegra 3 device - i am not a really big game player but sometimes would like to play Horn, Dark meadow and the other tegra 3 only games which cannot be played on the Note
general web browsing / ocassional movie watching when out and about would be nice on a bigger screen
i live in europe so google voice is not available at this time - so i wont really use it for any phone calls - maybe skype but ocassionally
i am trying to establish how much of a use it will get in order to see if its worth to purchase it..
please share your useages and experiences with owning both
Actually I have both items, G Note and Nexus 7
I bought the Nexus 7 two months ago, and the Gx Note last week.
Since I bought the Note, I've never used again the Nexus 7 (I'm selling it)
I've downloaded some Tegra Only games and only tried them for a while and never played again.
The Nexus has a bit bigger screen than Note, it is more fast and the touch responsiveness is better, but I prefer to have a decent "All In One" device like the Note (with a good replaceable battery and micro SD slot whith tons of films in it) than having to carry with another device only for a "little more of screen"
I have both too. But I find the Note to be slightly better for everyday use. It's decent sized and runs games (that I play) perfectly fine. Screen is a bit small (as opposed to the 7) for web browsing, but that's something I can live with. On the other hand, the nexus 7 screen is right in the middle of the Note and a 10" tablet. For certain apps, if I run the phone version on the 7, the UI's too big (big buttons, big text); but if I run the tablet version of the app, texts are often too small to read on the 7 inch and some buttons are harder to press as they've been resized to fit the 7" screen. Sorry for my english but I think you get my point.
Now that we have jelly bean running on our exynos powered phones, the whole performance argument doesn't fly. Pretty sure the note outperforms anything with a tegra 3, despite having half as many cores. Exynos ftw!

I have the note and 2 nexus 7 had 2 more but sold them, the nexus is much faster (all are running paranoid android 2.5 ROMs if I were going to read , check emails , look up something on the internet it would be no question the nexus 7, if I wanted something small / more portable to check something quick then the note is better plus if need some to make phone calls without being linked to another device ie. Tablet talk then obviously the note is your choice, even though I don't use the note as a phone anymore I would never sell it

I have a Nexus 7 and a GN. The Nexus is lightning fast, and a real pleasure for games or as a e-reader. I use both devices every day, and I love both.
I use my Nexus for navigation in my car (with car mount). The GN sits in my console, connected to BT for calls.
The one thing I do find is that the Nexus connects to GPS faster, and the nav app (Waze) seems snappier.
Whilst I do love the Nexus 7, as it is an amazingly capable tablet for a very respectable price, there is very little point in any 7" tablet in my opinion so long as you own any of the newer Android devices that often employ a 4.5+ inch display and especially if you own a phone/tablet hybrid such as the Galaxy Note. In my personal opinion, a tablet should be around the 10" mark like the iPad. It is just a nice size for greater productivity, whilst still maintaining greater portability than a laptop.

My Note is running the leaked 4.1.1 rom and the nexus the stock 4.1.2 from google and the nexus is a lot faster than the Note

a lot of good points have been made here regarding speed of the nexus, size and usages what you have
from what i have evaluated certain tasks are better suited on the nexus and other tasks are more geared towards the note..due to its size etc
lots of things to think about here....
I have Note and tried nexus. Just doesn't feel big enough and had other limitations that didn't help. My Note and Transformer prime work a lot better as a combo for me.

I have a Galaxy Note and a Nexus 7. Although its a nice device i hardly use my nexus 7 as my Note can do everything it can (except the tegra3 specific games) but theyre not really that good tbh. Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean was much smoother but i have since installed super nexus rom on my note and theyre pretty much the same now.
My Nexus is mostly a home device for me until I get my hands on the 3g version then i will bring it out and will be doing mostly my surfing and emails with it. My Gnote is mostly just phone calls and occasional quick surfing, whatsapp, Facebook, etc.
I reckon a tablet and phone have their own specific uses and each supplement the cons of the other. Everyone should have both!

I was also thinking about buying a Nexus 7 mainly for reading ebooks but I am unsure about the display quality - isn't the notes super amoled far superior?

I have both aswell and happy with both of them. One would expect the screen quality of Gnote to be better due to the super amoled tech it uses but in reality it have black clipping issues which make watching low quality videos a problem.

I too have both. I love everything about the Note (previous phones were Nexus One followed by Nexus S) except what it's missing... the Nexus experience. The Nexus 7 reminded me what I'm missing. My wife inherited my Nexus S and I still envy her smooth clean experience with a phone that's 2 years old. She has JB with Google Now and all the goodies... I sit here with a beautiful 5.3" screen, and incredibly powerful hand held computer, but stuck on ICS. When will we get JB on the Note (Samsung is in no hurry.They want to sell new phones)? I considered rooting and installing a rom, but after following this forum since I purchased my Nexus One, I decided to stay stock. Too many problems.
After much thought I've decided to sell my Note and will pre-order the Nexus 4 as soon as it hits the Play Store. I will never buy a phone or tablet again without it being pure Google.

Blacks are a lot blacker with the note but I was surprised that the nexus looks much sharper and detailed. Maybe is my lame screen protector not sure.

Well, I decided to take the plunge. I have upgraded and moved on to the Nexus 10. This tablet has been good to me for the last 18 months, but I don't want to rely on rooting to have the latest software and sometimes there's just a little bit of lag that's upsetting. And I'm just not a fan of TouchWiz.
Tablets aren't as important to me as the smartphone that I am carrying, but I think this upgrade will last me a long long time. So it was worth it.
I haven't heard or read about many people here talking about the Nexus 10 yet*. Should I assume that everyone is just content with the Galaxy Tab 10.1? How much longer do you guys see yourself with it?
* Edit: let me clarify since this was not understood. Many forums talk about the "next" device to move on to. For example, the Galaxy Nexus forum had lots of talk going on about "should I upgrade to the Nexus 4?" There really was no 10" Nexus tablet, and it seems our device (10.1) is the logical precursor (Grandparent?) to the Nexus 10, which seems to be a GTab 2 10.1 on steroids.

To answer your post. I moved on to the N7.. I purchased my 16GB version then two weeks later the 32GB was released and I exchanged it out. I haven't looked back since.. My Galaxy Tab sits on my TV stand and has been there for weeks now with an uptime of 445 hrs (just checked) and a screen on time of 5 minutes.. It's literally a paperweight. I tried to use the tab as just an e-reader but.. Seriously.. The Tab 10.1 sucks.. Once you use a real tablet on real hardware that isn't crippled and under-performing the flaws, lag, stuttering and slowness we already knew about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are just heightened to the point you want to smash it.
So yes.. I moved on. I would buy the Nexus 10 if I had a need for a 10 inch but after using the N7.. I no longer want a 10 inch tablet.. For me the 7inch form factor is perfect.
BTW Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the Nexus family! Home of prompt updates straight from Google and pure AOSP support right out of the gate.. You'll never buy a non-Nexus device again

I'm not yet satisfied with the Nexus 10, perhaps I'll go for google's next 10inch tablet, though I might get a N7 before then, but I think I'd miss the larger sceen (a more likely scenario is that somebody else in the household would be the primary user)
P.S. Actually, maybe I would get it if I wasn't getting the N⁴, but two new devices is probably)too much for me atm, and (for me) the N10 definitely doesn't justify it.
Well I thank the last two users for "getting" it. That's all I was asking for, the perspective of 10.1 users.
To me the N10 advantages over the 10.1 are:
AOSP - No Touchwiz! (or Rooting needed)
Prompt Updates
Resolution makes reading a joy
Lag free on the A15 Cortex.
Doesn't look like an iPad
Lightweight but apparently a very sturdy, industrial design
If I DID choose to root and ROM, a bigger community because it's a Nexus(?)

Cameras? Meh. Never use them anyway.
Battery life? I've never had any opinion of the 10.1's battery life. It's not a smartphone that I am constantly using so it last me several days in-between charges. I'm sure the N10 will be the same.
Design and looks: The 10.1 probably does look better? Though, more Appleish. So it's about even.
I honestly wanted to find more reasons why keeping the 10.1 makes sense. And as far as a point-by-point argument, the Nexus 10 wins hands down. But that doesn't really matter because it depends on how you are using a tablet. To me, a tablet is always secondary to my smartphone. I use it far less. The Browser, Email, Google Reader, scan the news apps. That's mostly it. I don't play games. I don't video chat. So really, even though I think the Nexus 10 is far superior, the 10.1 did most of what I wanted just fine. So I can't blame anyone for keeping the 10.1 (unless you're still using it on Stock TouchWiz 4.0, where it is soo laggy, etc? My Jelly Bean ROM has been fantastic!). If you don't like to root to "fix" things, but you are a heavy tablet user, than I'm thinking you probably are looking to upgrade--which goes back to the original question: Is the Nexus 10 good enough? I guess I'll see in a couple days... I'll probably post back some comparisons later.

This.. This is why I am no longer interested in a 10inch.
Before I had my N7 as you said my phone would be my go to device and my Tab was second fiddle.. It was big, not very portable and kind of awkward to use in most circumstances unless you were just flipping through a book or something. Now.. Ever since I got my Nexus 7.. My phone is second fiddle.. The N7 form factor is like a phone on steroids.. Larger enough to make reading, gaming, app use and browsing much easier but small enough where it doesn't feel like you're Fred Flintstone holding a slab in your hands either.
This is ultimately the reason my Galaxy Tab has fall to the way side entirely and also my phone.. The 7 inch form factor is the perfect combination between phone and tablet..

I never needed a tablet but I liked my TAB (especially since ICS). But the Nexus 7 really hit the spot: now I feel I DO need to have a tablet around. For me (old eyes and all), the 10 inch screen is a bit better for classic WEB browsing (and a lot better as a remote to my PCs), but the format and weight of the N7 makes it the "go to" device for anything but "work stuff".
I thought a lot about the N10 these past couple of weeks, but in the end I passed (and I still have the TAB: not worth the hassle of selling at this point; I'll use it intermittently until I find a potential Android recruit to recycle it to). I think I may wait for the Nexus 8 (lighter, much thinner bezel, high ppi... and able to replace any and all of my remotes).
P.-S. --- The N7 fits in the pockets of my hoodies: no X10 would!
I have a wifi tab 10.1, a 4G tab 7.7, and a GS3.
I use the 7.7 and GS3 far more than I use the 10.1. Probably use the 7.7 the most. It's portability and the 4G give it an advantage over the 10.1 while the larger screen gives it an advantage over the GS3. I'd love to get a N10, but it's more because I love gadgets than any real need for it. I'd love the S Pen functionality of the Note 10.1, but wish it was quad core... And obviously the N10 doesn't have this. So the primary draw of the N10 is the display and the prompt updates since it's a reference device.
If I had the money, I'd probably get a N10...though Engadget wasn't terribly impressed by it. I may try to get my hands on a Note 10.1 cuz the S Pen functionality would make it a good tool for work.
Never been impressed by the N7. The screen feels narrow and its fat/heavy. I'll happily exchange the quad-core processor for the thin, light design and AMOLED screen of the tab 7.7.

What exactly do you mean by "pocket" here? The two hand thing? If so, how tall are you/what size do you where? I'm not a big person and I've gotten my gt10.1 in there :S
I have been looking at many of the next tablets being offered by most of the companies. The Nexus 10 is tempting, but I DO use the camera for some things, and the 10 inch screen is important to the main function for which I bought a tablet. I tried the 7 inch units and they're just too small for my needs. I use my tablet for a moving-map display and electronic flight-bag while I'm flying. I actually use an app that does a split-screen and shows me charts and flight data at the same time. The 7-inch was just too small for that. I had a Transformer Prime for a while and really liked the display and operational speed, but the lack of a functional wifi and GPS took that out of the picture in a hurry. For the moment, the Tab 10.1 still does the job. But I am looking.

GTab 10.1 vs N10
Screen:
N10 pixels/resolution obviously blows the GTab 10.1 away; but it seems like the N10 screen is more washed out compared to the deep colors of the GTab.
Speakers:
Maybe it's my hearing, but the GTab seems to have louder sound
Performance:
Oh my, not even close. The Exynos 5 in the N10 poops on the Tegra 2. FINALLY Android does not have any lag. Whereas the GTab hails from Lag City. (Rooting and Roming obviously helps).
Cameras:
Even? I took pic's, I skyped, saw no difference.
Build quality:
The N10 does not feel like a Samsung device. The GTab feels like a Toy in comparison. Though it feels much lighter (even though the specs say they are closer) so some may prefer that.
Software:
The GTab requires you to root it for decent performance. Or you can have full functionality to go along with lagginess and TouchWiz. The N10 is a Nexus. A full working 4.2. Yes it's new so there are bugs, but thankfully Samsung does not handle updates.
Battery:
More or less even. MAYBE the GTab 10.1 has a slight, slight edge? not sure yet.
Extras:
N10 has an HDMI port I probably will never use. Though it does have a notification light which is really helpful. Neither have SD's. I am fan of the wide bezels on the N10 because my thumb does not cover the screen.
Conclusion:
I feel like the N10 is so much better, but really, the GTab 10.1 did most of what I needed and did it "ok" to "well". The N10 just does it a little quicker. And it's nice to know I don't have to root it to be satisfied. So on those levels it is worth it. Otherwise, if you can not afford it, there is no reason why you need to be an early adopter. I think many GTab 10.1 users may end up getting the Nexus 7 instead as that is become standard for many hard core Android users. If you watch tons of videos, then the N10 is highly recommended. If you can not tolerate TouchWiz and rather not mod the device, also get the N10. For everyone else? No rush.
The N10 is 1.5 years newer.. It should smoke the 10.1
I'm dying to replace the tab with a new device, before the N10 I was considering the Asus TF700 but I'll only jump ship when one of them deliver a 3G option, I seriously don't get why the don't release mobile data versions in tandem of Wi-Fi only option.
But I suspect and hope Google bring it out soon, I don't think Asus will do now, not now the infinity has been out for so long.

I will try to present a slightly different view. Before I was forced to get my Samsung 10.1, I had a 10.1v which I truly think is a much better device than the plain 10.1. Eventually I will cannibalize my 10.1 to get my 10.1v working again.
My new tablet has to have the following features: 10" screen, 3G, quad-core and preferably a pen too. Such a device is still some ways from hitting the market and until such a time, I guess I'm content with my 10.1.
I have a 4.7" phone so there is little point for me getting a less than 10" tablet. Call it due to my older eyes but for me 10" is a very comfortable size, I don't even miss my notebook as I also have a Logitech BT keyboard. I have no problems carrying the tablet. I can understand that it comes down to a personal choice where screen size is concerned, for me the big screen just makes it easier to work with the device.
I did root my tab as it makes me uncomfortable that I can't even make a decent backup without a root. If I can put JB on my 10.1, it would definitely delay a new device
I really want to get the Nexus 10, but I currently only use my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for infrequent browsing and even less frequent Angry Birds Star Wars. I may get the Note 10.1 for my wife because she really wants the stylus---oops, I mean the S-Pen.
If Google adds a native Android feature allowing two apps to run side-by-side (like the Note, but implemented better), I'd buy the Nexus 10 tomorrow.
For now, I'll keep puttng up with the mild lag of the GTab 10.1.

Everything works great. Google Now works, front and rear cameras work as well. It will take an hour the first time through, but I think you will be super happy with your Tab. This could extend the viable life of the 10.1 for another 6-12 months until the next big thing comes along.
(Of course all of this is at your own risk. It works great for me, but might not work so well for anyone else.)
On the Nexus10 front, I can't believe that anyone would buy a 16Gb tablet! If I have a couple nandroids and a few movies or TV show seasons, I'm well above 16Gb. Right now I have <5Gb free on my GTab10.1 and I only have a few games, 1 season of Breaking Bad and about 3 or 4 hours of music on it. This IMO is "minimum" local storage for a week away from home on a business trip. 5+ hour flights are a drag without copious local data.
I'd love to buy a nexus 10, sadly it's not available in Italy, maybe it never will be
that means my money is going to Asus this time, 299$ for 32Gb plus 3g is the best deal out there in my opinion; that said I'll keep my gtab 10,1 to watch movies in case I'm not satisfied with the 7 inch display.
OK, first impressions on the Nexus10 from someone who's been an Android user since the OG Droid and has had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi for 16 months.
It is a little bit wider and almost exactly the same height and thickness of the p4wifi
The Nexus10 is heavier, 604g vs 558g on my kitchen scale. Its width makes it seems a bit heavier since it puts more torque on your hand if holding it one handed.
The buttons are in the same orientation as the p4wifi
The buttons on the Nexus10 are slightly further to the left than on the p4. This leads me to accidentally hit the power button more since I'm used to being able to grab the tab by that corner safely
The buttons are lower-profile and seem a bit chintzy compared to the p4
The Nexus10 screen is warmer and a bit "dimmer" than the p4. I think the p4 actually has slightly better contrast. This is a subjective judgement. I'm using automatic brightness on both. Although the stock auto-brightness stinks. I need to get AOKP installed on the Nexus10 and tweak the brightness.
Nexus10 does indeed poop on the p4 from performance perspective. It is like night and day even running the Stock Nexus 10 versus highly overclocked and tweaked p4.
I haven't auditioned the headphone out yet. Will get some high-bitrate music on here and try it out soon.
It looks better in person than in the pictures. I think in the pictures that the roundedness of the Nexus10 looks unattractive, but in person it is fine.
I am very dissappointed with how few accessories have been announced so far. I suppose this isn't surprising, but I would really like a bluetooth keyboard case for it. The Logitech ZAGG case for my p4wifi, of course, doesn't fit at all.
My very cheap "Acase" flip case ALMOST fits. It is very snug due to the extra width. I think with a little Xacto knife action, I'll have a usable but not ideal case. The speaker holes aren't too far from the charging port.
My wife actually prefers the p4 for reading books as the Nexus10 is "too small". At least on Google Play (I haven't played with Kindle Reader yet) this is not merely a matter of zoom level. For example the free "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" the pictures of the Rabbit are about 2x the size on the p4 as on the Nexus10. I assume this is because the Play Store hasn't been fully adapted for high-dpi devices yet.
The p4 would slowly charge when plugged into USB but the Nexus10 seems to actually lose charge while plugged into USB. Hopefully custom kernels will be available soon with "fast charge" capability.
Well hope that helps somebody make a decision.
I've owned a N7 2012 for about a year, and I have a buyer for my old one, so I'm looking at upgrading. I haven't used a stylus device in years, but I used to love them: precision text editing, sketches to supplement an explanation, and unambiguous link clicking in the browser.
I expect longevity from my devices, and my previous experience has been that the charging connector breaks first on every mobile device I've had. This gives the N7 the serious advantage with the Qi inductive charging.
OTOH, the Note's performance is more future-proof: a 96GB Note (thanks SD-card expansion) will stay useful longer with a 32GB N7, and the benchmarks also come out clearly in favour of the Note: (Slashgear Note 6900 http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/quadrant_gnote8_attwtmk.jpg vs N7 5600 http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content...enshot_2013-07-25-13-17-52-google-nexus-7.jpg ).

I prefer note 8 due to larger size and I won't mind carrying a slightly bigger one. Was coming from 7.7. I would have taken if it's nexus 8.

I don't know what I can add except my reason for buying a Note 8.0--the pen. I bought my Note for school to replace everything in my bookbag--no more notebooks, no more laptop, no more text books. So far I'm very happy with my decision. I was also considering the new Nexus but because I wanted the ability to take notes, the lack of a wacom pen was off-putting. The Note was well worth the extra money for me.
I'm split between these two devices also. The new Nexus has the 1080p screen and prompt updates in its favor. The Note 8, suprisingly has a very good screen despite being 1280*800, but don't expect to get any updates for this. I mean you can always go AOSP or AOKP but that defeats the purpuse of even buying a Note. So if being stuck at Android 4.1.2 forever doesn't bother you the Note is a good choice.

why should we not expect updates for the note 8.0? I thought they were already working on e 4.2.2 build. in fact a quick search suggests thats its already available
I had the nexus 7.2 for a week and a half, the 16Gb version and it had a very nice screen fast processor but returned it due to frequent reboots, apparently it only happens on the 16Gb version. Got the note 8 instead. Am very satisfied with it.
I'd recommend you get the Nexus 7.2 first use it for a week then return and get the Note 8, that way you can see the strength and weakness of both and then decide which one is more useful to you. I am glad I did that, the Nexus 7.2 was how to say this not to hurt anyones feelings -plain vanilla- which is not bad, but you can't really compare the two because of the S pen feature on the Note 8. The Note 8 screen is not bad at all, but the 7.2 beats it, and I find that I do use the S pen more often than I thought I would. Also I'm a long time Samsung user and I like their products. I gave the Nexus 7.2 a try but am more comfortable with the Note 8, also love the S pen, for that alone it was worth it to me.
So as I mentioned get one use it as is for a week or two then return it and get the other one. Test both, but in my opinion you can't really pin the two tablets against each other. They are both good just depends what you are going to use it for, if you're a big game player get the Nexus, if you going to use the tablet for other things get the Note 8

I've owned more than a few Samsung devices, I currently own a two SGS 3, AT&T and Sprint. Neither are on 4.2.2, which is why i'm on CM10.1.2. I'd be pretty happy with a TouchWiz 4.3, but I know Samsung is pretty lame at updates that's why I made that statement, if the Note does get the 4.2.2 update, that's great, but I don't think they will go past that.
Hopefully Samsung is doing an overhaul on TouchWiz all together, I may stick with Samsung devices, otherwise my next device will be a Nexus. I've given up hope for the skin based phones and updates.
It really comes down to how much you value the s-pen....i thought I'd get much more use out of it (i do a lot of handwritten note taking, but at meetings i typically type in notepad) and never did so I just put my Note8 up for sale because the extra $100 wasn't worth it because it was still faster/easier for me to jot something quick on a post it than to take out the spen, launch the note app, scribbe something, save it....
however when I was in school the ability to take down quick notes and write on-screen on pdfs/ppt was *very critical* and I loved my W7 tablet with ntrig (this is all pre-tablets so it just depends on your use case
With OTG usb, you can still use microsd on the Nexus7, althought it's a bit more work and takes up the charging port..not sure if the new N7 has that yet (you had to be rooted on the old N7 to use it)
screenwise, the new N7 quality is much better, but I find the slightly larger note 8 to actually be easier to read on and use
I'm close to making my final decision because I refuse to keep the Note 8.0 and the N7 (2013) that I currently have.
The N7 is super nice. The display keeps drawing me back over and over. I like the fact that I can watch Netflix on it and not accidentally press the back button like I tend to do on the Note 8.0. I love the crisp text in my ebooks. And who doesn't love stock?
The Note 8.0 is better from a productivity standpoint for me, and it's why it currently leads. Outside of holding it in landscape and pressing buttons accidentally, I actually prefer the feel of the Note 8.0 more than the new N7. The display isn't nearly as bad as some would have you believe either. Sure if you have it side by side the N7, you'll see it, but in my opinion it looks real good.
Also a sidenote for comic book readers. I use Comixology, and I'm not a fan of the panel to panel view unless I'm forced to use it due to something being very small. It's easier for me to read comics on the Note 8.0 compared to the N7. Probably because of the extra inch of real estate.
Probably the reason I still go back and forth is because I know I can expect updates and a vibrant dev community on the N7, but probably not so much with the Note 8.0. Heck, I have the AT&T LTE variant, and I sadly can't even root that yet. Good luck with your decision.
I went ahead and ordered the 32GB Nexus 7.2. I figure I can always sell it for about what I paid for it if I decide not to keep it.
I got the previous Nexus 7 as a gift, but actually ended up selling it (and keeping the more lowly spec'd Tab 2 7" I already had) because the Nexus was just so flaky. Apparently it was a great device prior to 4.1, but I only got onboard after that. Plus the speakers were PATHETIC (unacceptable for a device that screams multimedia consumption.) I'm hoping those are better this go-round as I use mine for backgound music/video quite a bit.
There's pros to being on the bleeding edge of updates I guess. But I almost view it like you're being an unofficial beta tester. Samsung may not always have the latest official Android version on all its flagship devices, but all my experiences with them to-date have been outstanding. There's a reason (beyond just marketing) that they're the most dominant OEM in the Android world.
If the primary purpose is reading as OP has posted, I would suggest note 8 to be better choice.
My primary reason for buying note 8.0 was reading (PDF's as well as comics) and considering that almost 38 GB of my external 64 Gig card is occupied by books i would say i am more than pleased by my choice.
The extra screen size does matter here though both share similar 16:10 aspect ratio , which is quite ok,
another surprise feature, the reading mode that samsung built into this is amazing (though it might appear strange at first) but now I just can't imagine reading without that , it's easier on eyes,less stress and for me makes for much better concentration. add a good reader app (I absolutely love the free perfect viewer app for pdf and comics)
The secondary thing for me was the s-pen. since i have been using wacom tablets on pc since late 90's I found this quite adequate. My N-5100 costed me around $530 USD) which is surely definitely on the costlier side of things however I would still consider it worth that extra dough.
I also primarily use this at home and mine is still unrooted (haven't found a need or reason to root it yet).
Gotta decide what's your most important feature.
For me tablets can have two distinct purposes, media consumption device or productivity device. As a media consumption device there isn't much use to me for a tablet because honestly, most things are just more convenient to do on my phone since I always have it, and it has a data connection.
Now as a productivity device, there are a couple things the note 8 excels at. PDF and textbook portability/editing, handwritten notes, and remote desktop control. The spen takes this device to a higher level of productivity because there is no device with a comparable stylus. But for anything else like word document editing, media production, music/picture editing, tablets in general fall short because laptops/desktops are just better.
So if you want a media consumption device, the new Nexus 7 is probably better or even the iPad for that matter. But for productivity the spen will make up for the other shortcomings like lower screen pixel density, less frequent operating system updates, etc.
MobileTechReview posted her review, comparing the two tablets. Everything she said is exactly the same thought I have between the two tablets. I currently have both. I'm more tempted to return the Nexus, but don't know yet.

She doesn't mention bugs, but the Nexus has its own bugs too... such as apps crashing or becoming unresponsive to touches. I have seen the GPS crash several times using a GPS testing app.
It took me ages to decide between the N7 and note 8, and I decided on the note 8. But now I realise, that as I'm going university next year, I'll probably need a laptop, and I'm confused all over again

The Note 8, suprisingly has a very good screen despite being 1280*800, but don't expect to get any updates for this. I mean you can always go AOSP or AOKP but that defeats the purpuse of even buying a Note. So if being stuck at Android 4.1.2 forever doesn't bother you the Note is a good choice.

Agree with almost everything she said as well. I disagree with her assessment of the speakers and volume though. While this year's Nexus finally has proper speakers they're still not as loud as the Note 8's. The quality is a bit better as far as separation/bass goes, but not as loud.
I'm probably going to stick with the Note 8. It's just hard to go back to 7" display no matter what the resolution. It's great that the text is clear, but it's tiny - and the saturation isn't as good. And I've already experienced the Nexus bugginess (unresponsive to touches) several times as well.

I own the original nexus 7...
I currently own an ipad 4 (so I'm used to looking at retina display), I've had the note 10.1, nexus 10, etc....
Honestly I think 8" is the sweet spot. I want to love thenew nexus 7 so bad but I feel like 7" is just a tad too small. The extra screen area from an 8" tablet seems sooo much larger and more usable when browsing websites. Am I crazy? I feel like I keep reading about screen clarity vs spen vs whatever ... but to me the real battle is do you prefer 7" vs 8" - I'm probably going to get both and then return the one I dont' like. As I said, I'm used to the retina screen as well as the beautiful screen on my htc one; however just playing around with the note in the store, the screen honestly isn't that bad and colors are quite quite good.
That said, the nexus 7 screen is by far superior BUT I still think the larger size provides so much better screen real estate and thus ease of use.
Anyone not get the nexus 7 simply because they don't like a 7" tablet?
