Really annoyed with HUGE game file downloads and low storage - Windows Phone 8 General

I have a 16gb Samsung Ativ S.
Like most people I was curious about the newly launched Modern Combat game. It is over 1gig to download but that is fine, I had over 2gigs of free storage space. Except I could not download it as I got a low storage error. No problem I say, I will just delete some games and reinstall them after I tried the trial.
So I delete a game. Not enough. I delete another. Still not enough. Then I delete the largest sized game I have: Asphalt 7. Still not enough. Now I am getting angry because I have to start sacrificing my game progress and saves by deleting games just to try a flipping new game. Which do I delete? Which do I keep? Decisions decisions. I downloaded way too much. I then didn't want to delete anymore games so I had to start deleting apps. Here maps with downloaded map. Audiocloud app and saved songs. In the end when I had 5.11 gigs of free storage would it allow me to download and install the Modern Combat game. When it did install I checked phone storage and it said I had 2.45gigs left. So the 1gig download takes up 2.66 gigs of storage space and yet I had to have over 5gigs free to download? What the hec!!!
Some points...
I know games need additional space to unpack its compressed file but needing over 2gigs of additional space is just wrong.
I don't know who to blame.. the developers for making such games with HUGE storage requirements or blame Microsoft for low storage phones and storage allocation system.
Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against the game. It looks and seems great and of course I would want plenty of games like this but if you are telling me I need to delete apps to gain over 5gigs of storage to install a 2.66 gig game, that is not on. God forbid I want to install and buy Modern Combat, Batman, Asphalt 7 and Real Football - they would probably be the only games I could fit in my phone (excluding apps). Also good luck if you have an 8gig phone.
Also the famous 'Other Storage' fiasco doesn't help where it is 6gigs on my phone. What the hec!!! I am being polite
I really think all phones should have minimum 32gig storage if this is the way games are headed. If only we could install games and apps to microSD - it would solve all problems. I am not a big music hoarder or photo hoarder as most my photos are on the cloud so I have a 16gig microSD card in my phone with a lot of valuable user space that I cant have apps on. What use is that Microsoft? Microsoft is pushing/suggesting we store photos/music and video on the cloud (Skydrive), then what is the point of having external microSD storage supporting media files only? Give us options Microsoft.
Anyway, rant over. I will go back to playing Modern Combat trial, deleting it and reinstalling my games back and playing them from the very beginning. Again! I cant buy the game because that means I cant play my other games because they would have to be deleted. £5.49 sale lost. Actually £10.98 sale lost because I want Batman game too!
What joy!

You need approximately 2.5 times the size of the file you download, because during install, you have the downloaded copy of the installation zip, and the decompressed copy, both existing at the same time. Considering the thing you download from the marketplace is somewhat compressed, you need much more space than what you download.
After full decompression, the compressed zip is deleted. Keep in mind that the size on the marketplace is the size of the download which does not always match the actual size of the game.

Thanks I am aware that the size quoted in marketplace is the size of the compressed file. I think Microsoft should make it mandatory to include the required space to download the file also. Eg over 5gigs for Modern Combat. This way we can make an informed decision of what we delete if any if we choose to download it.

I do not believe they measure the space as a requirement. They do, however, have issues if the game is too big for devices that should support the game as far as RAM and CPU are concerned.

One trick you could try though is to download the Game's XAP from the Online Marketplace at www.windowsphone.com. You then copy the downloaded file over to the SD card. It takes up to 10 minutes before the Store on the phone discovers the XAP-file. You can then choose to install the downloaded XAP from the SD card to internal memory. This should help you reduce the space requirement during installation by at least the amount the downloaded XAP file occupys.
For a better manual on how to install downloaded XAPs you'll have to do a Google search. I have a Lumia 920 which doesn't have a SD card slot and had to type this up from memory.
Hope it helps.

Yea, Download it from the Windows Phone store website, you wont get the error of lack of space. If you are really low on space, when it is downloading it to your phone, it will give you the error.
If your having problems with a large "other" folder, Download the "Shrink Storage" app from the market place. It really does work. Took my HTC 8X from having a 6gb down to a 2.54gb "other" folder. I use it time to time when my "other" folder starts to get large, and it does shrink it....Till MS fixes the problem.

Storage & Sync

Hi Guys
I am considering buying the nexus S and have a couple of questions that stem from what I've been reading in android related topics
1- Will the nexus S come with a software to sync Outlook contacts/calender/notes through a direct USB cable connection with the computer? are there any 3rd party software to do that if the nexus S does not ship with this software
2- I assume the 16 Gig will be divided as 1 gig for system and remaining as internal Card. I play games on my phone, and some have installation files as big as 500 or 700 MB, so will the 2.3 support installing apps on the internal card, or am I limited to the 1 gig of system space?
3- Is the Nexus S file system same or different from the Galaxy S file system (RFS)
4- Has anyone that tried the phone experienced any sort of lag after using the phone for sometime, installing a lot of apps, or after opening and closing a lot of applications
Thanks
1. No. Are there any? Probably. There are plugins you can use that syncs Outlook to your Google account then that'll sync to your Android.
2. The app limit itself is set to 50megs, if the game itself requires more, it will download to sd card automatically like that new game.
Other apps can install (if coded that way) to install onto "external", although it will still take up some internal space. Android 2.3 "apps2sd" is exactly the same as 2.2
3. Supposedly it's different so it's better, read the development forum I think people said it uses EXT4
4. All the reviews so far says no lags at all. It's the fastest and smoothest Android phone ever.
little addition to the storage space.
The Nexus S has .95GB for apps on the /data partition, this holds the apk and any other data the app stores on the /data partition.
The android market limits games to 50MB so anything bigger than that needs to download and store the rest of the game files on the SD card, most gameloft games do this.
The "SD Card" in the nexus s is a 13.3GB partition.

[Q] New Owner Confused About Games

I just got my Xperia Play today and I'm a little puzzled about some of these games. I see that my Nova 2 cannot be moved onto my SD card (or atleast that button is dimmed under "manage apps"), but it requires an almost 400 Mb download to play. If there is only 400 Mb of memory on the phone, how is this possible? And if most Play games require additional downloads but can't be moved onto my SD, does that mean you will only have a few games at a time? Sorry if it was posted elsewhere, I did try to look around but couldn't find them
Use adb to set the install location to sd then everything can go to sd card, but as it is now just the app will be installed on the phone memory then the additional download will be put on the sd card

O I don't have adb yet... do I need to root my phone to use that? I recall it appeared when I put CM7 on my last phone. Thanks for clarifying that, all the games said they would download more stuff, didn't state where it would DL to, so I assumed it would go with the game

You do not need to move anything to download and store alot of games on your Xperia Play.
That would be stupid.
You download the apk, which gets stored on the phone. Its only a few mb. Then you download the game data which gets stored on your sd card.
The above users should of mentioned this before they sent you down a path of using commands to manually move things to the sd card.
I have about 9 large games on my phone at the moment and have around 155mb of free phone memory unused.
Also, the easiest way to move everything to the sd card is with titanium backup. Once you have rooted your phone, select batch move and it will automatically move everything you select to the sd card in one go.
Just as a tip, do not move wallpapers or clocks to your sd card. Your wallpaper and clock settings will get forgotten every time you plug your phone into your PC. (this is because your phone disconnects itself from the sd card so your pc can access it).
I think the biggest one ive seen so far is asphalt which takes up 30mb on the phones internal memory (after downloading the 400+mb to your sd).
But as dsswoosh has said if you root your phone you can use the free version of titanium backup to moves the games to the sd card. Now asphalt takes up less than 500kb rather than 30mb. Same with the other games once moved to the sd.
Games that are unable to be moved to the sd card normally such as nova and ashphalt can be moved once rooted.
Thank you all so much! Very useful, I think I was mainly just confused about where the game data was being downloaded to. With widgets and such having to stay on phone, plus the bloatware and programs that are phone only, 30 meg games still seemed pretty big so I was kind of worrying about space still, but after this thread I'm def going to root my phone. Thanks again!
I've got 21 games installed and a bunch of other apps and still got 240 mb of internal storage!

Bloatware you can easily remove when rooted. and if you force all the installs to sd throug adb, you can keep up to 300MB internal storge
I have 303 free atm.
Only modern combat you should keep on the phone i think, i had it on sd for a week or 2 and suddenly it stopped working and no possible way to get it to work again only after factory reset.

Nvidia Shield updated to allow game saves to external sd card!!

I just got an update notification from my Nvidia Shield, the update contains the following:
1) Ability to move select apps and game programs (apk files) from internal memory to the micro sd card!!
2) improved Miracast streaming
improved PC streaming stability, gamepad detection and wifi performance!
3) Support for Tegra developer tools
Downloading the update now, good thing that I have a 64 gig card, now it's time to put it to good use!!
Great job Nvidia!
Update** Ok guys, the official news from NVidia about the ability to move complete game data over to the micro SD cards is shown below. Looks like they are working on it:

I don't see how some random Chinese tablet manufacturer can figure this out, but nvidia can't.
Nvidia Mod Reply: Its not that we cant, its that it requires some new code to be written in order to support it. Which we are working on for a future update.
Glad its getting good support i just got mine delivered here in the uk today.
Nice. Updating mine now.
Moving of games didn't work for me. It barely decreased the file size on the Shield. I looked at the SD after, and while there are a couple files there, they aren't the main game files. So the 2+GB games I have, are still on the Shield instead of the SD.
-Edit-
According to NVIDIA "Only APK files get moved." As most games have download after the fact, this doesn't quite help much.

Yes I just saw that as well. Gave me 300mb back. Not really useful just moving the apk.
can we update with root and unlocked bootloader ? also folder mount is doing a great job moving apps to the sd card so that's not a big deal
Nvidia deserves a round of applause for this one!

Yes. You will have to reroot though. The bootloader will remain unlocked.
DAMN YOU @MRCANNADY! haha
I was JUST ABOUT to start a thread... But I see that there are two new threads about this. (I think yours was the first)
I did make a video on the update too!

Just use Foldermount then you'll have plenty of space.
Arf, still audio latency....

What game did you move because I dont think it can completely move whole the game data into sdcard. I try for mc4 that have 1.9gb but shield only move 400mb.

It just moves the apk not the game data.. It is nice that they try but the apk is not the data hog.
I can not reroot. Need help. My PC don't recognize it. I installed the drivers already
yeah, I just noticed that it's only moving certain games/files...hence the quick transfer speeds
I think this is an android issue though, however, Nvidia stated on their official Shield forum that they are working on a a work-around..fingers crossed
CAN anyone help me??
I uninstalled and reinstalled Bard's Tale. This time it asked me where to put the files when the large download started. I chose my external card and it put all the 3.8GB of data there. I am going to try to uninstall Vice City next and do the same and see if it lets me put all on the external sd card....
Don't forget to click that Thanks button if I helped in any way.
I recall a poster saying you could move data as well. Poster did not know what they were talking about?
This makes more sense. The irony is it only helps with older games that had bigger apk files and no data folder. The trend now of course is huge data folders and small apk files. Apps2sd is a semi hollow option as a result.

[Q] iPhone 4S switcher to Note 3 comments and questions

I just switched from the iPhone 4S 64 GB AT&T to the Note 3 32GB AT&T and put in a Sandisc extreme 64GB microSDXC.
I had problems with the iPhone freezing and crashing. Doing a factory reset, a lot of my programs disappeared from iTunes. It was getting to be really annoying.
On the Note 3 I love the screen (size and resolution) and many other things. Asphalt 8 and RealRacing 3 look and play great.
While I had to call AT&T to block my outgoing Caller ID, I could do that from the Note 3.
There is no sales tax on purchases from Google Play store in Texas, while Apple always charged me 7-7.5% (I know because there is no "retail presence" of the Google Play store in TX).
Bad annoyance: I did, for as many programs as I could, the "Move to SD Card" and now I have ugly default android gray icons with SD in the right lower corner. How do I get the original icons back without transferring back to "device memory".
I am trying to upload music files to the SD card.
When I use Samsung Kies 3, will it upload the files to the SD (did not see an option for that anywhere). If it does not install it to the SD card: where are those files uploaded and how do I transfer the files over to SD and how do I play the files/playlists? Is there a way to directly transfer the files from the computer to the phone bypassing Kies. How and where do I upload books (pdf and other formats)?
Anyone know if there will be a combination extended battery/wireless charging case in the future?
My 14 days return time frame is not over, but they would have to "pry it from my cold dead hands".
The way I would do it is to just take the SD card out of the phone, stick it in the computer, copy and paste. The music player should find the songs automatically. As for the icon thing with the "move apps to SD card".... I don't know about that one. I haven't seen any reason yet to do that.
Welcome to Android, where you can use any file explorer on any OS to copy any file you want to any location on your phone.
You don't need to use Kies for media. Just use the phone and SD like you would any usb storage. In the music app you can then either select the specific folder, or let it scan the entire device.
Also no need to convert files, it plays pretty much anything. (and if the stock player won't, another will. For video I suggest Diceplayer from the start.)
Kies is for backup and sync, everything else you can do the good oldfashioned way. Most of us have never even installed Kies.

OK first you need to release the mindset of itunes for everything as in with Kies. DONT USE KIES lol
Just plug in your note 3, open up the folder you want, it will say phone or card
Drag the files you want. If thats not cool with you, there is an app called iSync that can copy your iTunes playlist over to your phone.
Also I think you should leave your Apps on the phone memory and not on the SD. Use the SD for media and your internal for apps and such. This way if you need to replace the sd or whatever you will be good.
Historically Google removed that option from android because it causes issues like for example the corrupted icons you've experienced. Samsung only added it back in with the 16 gb s4 because the system rom got so big it left users with less than 9 gb available space.
As the poster above said chuck all your media files on the external card. The 25 gb you will have initially available internally is more than enough for all of your apps unless you install a dozen or more high end games. Likely you'll only ever play a few at a time and then remove them when you get bored, at least I do.

Thanks for all the tips. I will try it tonight.
Welcome to Android, enjoy the coming months of playing around and finding out what you've been missing out on! I was an apple user until the Galaxy S2, since then I've never looked back! One little warning though, customisation becomes addictive... Flashing Roms, kernels, rooted apps/services.
Xda has some amazing devs contributing and as always they are happy to help a friendly fellow androider.
Back on topic though, I wouldn't even bother moving your apps the SD card? 32GB is loads of internal storage! Even tho we only see 25(ish)of that, below is my games folder and I have 8GB of internal memory left! But if I feel like freeing up space I'll simply use Es file Explorer and copy the game files from Android /data to my SD card (if rooted, use titanium backup app to backup the apk of the game) and swap back in at a later date if I wanted to play again
Hope this helps

[Q] Max Payne game taking up double it's required space

Hi.
I recently bought max Payne from the play store. Once it downloaded I noticed I'm lower than usual on storage. I checked disk usage and sure enough max Payne was taking up almost 3 GB. It's only supposed to take 1.4gb.
I've attached the screenshot here. The data is taking its own space. And the apk is taking its own space. I can't find the apk in file manager either.
Is it safe to delete it? How can I?
Also is there any way around this silly Samsung limitation of not being able to copy anything app related to external storage. What's the use of having a 32gb card if I can't use it and can only have one big game at a time :/
On stock rom I was able to move all the app data to SD card.
It's google's idea not to move apps to the external storage.
Have you tried reinstalling the game?
The "extra data" is most likely either downloaded extra game data or simply game cache. So it's doubtful it won't stay away.

I have this option of moving games to sd card. But after clicking move to external storage only 2 mb is moved to card and the rest stays in internal memory. This is the case with every app.
Are you able to move compete apps?
I am using a GPE rom right now and it doesn't have the option.
CM12 has but, like you said, it doesn't move the whole app.
You could try Folder Mount
