I just got my Xperia Play today and I'm a little puzzled about some of these games. I see that my Nova 2 cannot be moved onto my SD card (or atleast that button is dimmed under "manage apps"), but it requires an almost 400 Mb download to play. If there is only 400 Mb of memory on the phone, how is this possible? And if most Play games require additional downloads but can't be moved onto my SD, does that mean you will only have a few games at a time? Sorry if it was posted elsewhere, I did try to look around but couldn't find them
Use adb to set the install location to sd then everything can go to sd card, but as it is now just the app will be installed on the phone memory then the additional download will be put on the sd card

O I don't have adb yet... do I need to root my phone to use that? I recall it appeared when I put CM7 on my last phone. Thanks for clarifying that, all the games said they would download more stuff, didn't state where it would DL to, so I assumed it would go with the game

You do not need to move anything to download and store alot of games on your Xperia Play.
That would be stupid.
You download the apk, which gets stored on the phone. Its only a few mb. Then you download the game data which gets stored on your sd card.
The above users should of mentioned this before they sent you down a path of using commands to manually move things to the sd card.
I have about 9 large games on my phone at the moment and have around 155mb of free phone memory unused.
Also, the easiest way to move everything to the sd card is with titanium backup. Once you have rooted your phone, select batch move and it will automatically move everything you select to the sd card in one go.
Just as a tip, do not move wallpapers or clocks to your sd card. Your wallpaper and clock settings will get forgotten every time you plug your phone into your PC. (this is because your phone disconnects itself from the sd card so your pc can access it).
I think the biggest one ive seen so far is asphalt which takes up 30mb on the phones internal memory (after downloading the 400+mb to your sd).
But as dsswoosh has said if you root your phone you can use the free version of titanium backup to moves the games to the sd card. Now asphalt takes up less than 500kb rather than 30mb. Same with the other games once moved to the sd.
Games that are unable to be moved to the sd card normally such as nova and ashphalt can be moved once rooted.
Thank you all so much! Very useful, I think I was mainly just confused about where the game data was being downloaded to. With widgets and such having to stay on phone, plus the bloatware and programs that are phone only, 30 meg games still seemed pretty big so I was kind of worrying about space still, but after this thread I'm def going to root my phone. Thanks again!
I've got 21 games installed and a bunch of other apps and still got 240 mb of internal storage!

Bloatware you can easily remove when rooted. and if you force all the installs to sd throug adb, you can keep up to 300MB internal storge
I have 303 free atm.
Only modern combat you should keep on the phone i think, i had it on sd for a week or 2 and suddenly it stopped working and no possible way to get it to work again only after factory reset.

Hi everybody
I have been looking for an Android smartphone with a decent Camera (as I love taking pictures) and it seems I have found it in the Arc.
But one thing worries me, which is the 320 mb of internal memory which I have doubts of not being enough for my Arc to be Smart enough.
Can anybody help on this plz.
Thank you in advance
I have installed all the apps i need (abt 20 apps) and still have abt 200mb left. Also, I move games to SD card.
it's enough i have 150Mb free with all my apps. this was a little issue with Nexus. I even move some system apps to SD with titanium backup (you need root).
right now i have 58 apps installed (excl. system apps) and still have 147MB free. I have 9 games (not big games just casual) biggest games is taptap but after moving to sd save a lot.
If you able to fill up 320mb apps, your arc will be slowest phone in the world.
Given app2sd, most of new version apps support usage of 32gb SD card.

Thank you all
I am definitely going to have the Arc as soon as it is released here in the market (hopefully next week).
Thank you again
I have installed many apps (around 50 ~ 60) now still have 175MB.
Conditions: rooted the Arc, use Link2SD to move apps (cached, library, app) to your SD.
But you must get root to make 2nd ext2 partition and install Link2SD before can do this.
Can i move my apps on my sd card without rooting my phone?

only some. There are a lot that still will not allow themselves to be moved to SD.
Rooting however can force them all over to SD with programs like Titanium backup which is mighty handy, particularly if you have a few gameloft games or big satnav apps

SD card partitioning
Can anyone please advise on what is the right way to partition the SD card?
I've gotten a Sandisk Class4 16Gb; googled around and thought I should partition FAT32/ext3/Linux-swap. But after doing so, the phone cannot see the card anymore.

Theres no need to partition it unless your using apps2sd (which I dont think you can do yet with the arc?)

I've rooted (using Gingerbreak) and installed apps2sd / link2sd. Basically my issue is the pathetic RAM available causing Arc to lag from time-to-time.
I've removed Telco's useless software and I'm still struggling with <100Mb available RAM all the time.

You mean there's 100Mb wasted RAM sitting around doing nothing all the time? Oh no!
As for the partitioning, you have to do it in the right order or the phone wont find the card. First create an ext2 partition for apps, then format the remainder as FAT32. I dont recommend ext3 or ext4 for an SD card, theyre overkill for a simple single user system like a phone, and their fancy features will actually slow everything down on an SD card. You dont need a linux swap partition at all (IIRC this was only useful with early versions of some custom roms on other phones).
Note that i havent any experience with apps2sd on the arc, only on other phones, so everything i just said may be garbage w.r.t. the arc, but i think it probably applies whatever the phone.
Also note that using apps2sd wont help your ram 'issues' at all.
Moving apps to SD
You can move some apps to SD card in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
You can use apps like Apps2SD and ZDBox to automate much of the process.
If your device supports debugging in Settings > Applications > Development, enable debugging, install the Android SDK, go to the tools directory connect your device to the computer using USB, and execute this command:
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
This will allow you to move even more apps to SD, although there may be side-effects for some apps, like random crashes or failure to launch. If you see some app not working as anticipated, move it back to main memory.
To be honest i cant really see the need for the old style apps2sd these days, Androids built-in version seems to be sufficient to me.
While not all apps support it yet, the majority of the ones i've got installed seem to (particularly the larger ones, which is key), and the number is increasing all the time.
Maybe if you just *have* to install 200+ apps it will become a problem. I'm struggling to think of 200 useful apps though.
I have about 100+ apps. All the apps that CAN go on SD are on SD. I normally have about 70MB, but it fluctuates between 50~70
I've to install games and storybooks for my child, and these alone add up to about 50 apps. Some of them are not SD-friendly at all.
I certainly don't recall installing many apps, but Titanium Backup says I've some 306 elements.
Arc has only 335Mb available... why did SE take away the precious 177Mb away??
Guys i love my xperia play, but the 200mb of internal storage really isnt enough for me, seen as though most of us are rooted and have busybox installed, is it not possible to get an apps2sd+ script working on our devices? or will we have to wait for custom roms that have init.d support?? anyone have any ideas

Couldnt you just go in settings then application and move any apps to the sd card?
The PLAY has built in apps2sd
Only 30% of the apps can be moved to the sd card, using androids move to sd function, apps2sd+ moves the whole /data/app/ directory and the DC. Take asphalt 6 and lets golf 2 for example both thoes games are 40mb and cannot be moved, thats half my internal storage gone with 2 games lol copilot is 30mb adobe air is 20mb ..... all of these would take a few mbs each with apps2sd+

You can use the Android SDK to enable SetInstallLocation2, then everything will natively install to your SD

What is the best way to force apps to Sd on 2.3.3 rooted play? I've tried to find an app or process that's easy to do ad hoc but not found any easy way yet
I use apps2SD. Titanium Backup does the job but somehow my SD card got corrupted after rebooting my phone. I had to format and start over.

Where can I get apps2sd - or rather who is it by if its on the market. I've had a search on the market and theres a few with similar names in there, but none that look like one the forces apps to the sd card, only ones that alert you when apps can be moved to sd.
If its not on the market, can you link to it at all please?

Try link2sd, it works diffrently to other app2sd apps, you will need to make an ext partition on your sd card though
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD&hl=en
I'm using app2sd, and it works great for most apps, however there are many apps that the program just wont allow you to move. I'm on an R800x via Verizon. Like I said I cant move the bloatware and some other apps but I'd say 50% of the apps I DL will move to my SD... I've only got about 100mb so I'm hoping a root or an alternative way to remove bloatware surfaces soon.

Ashphalt can be moved to the sd card using Titanium backup (free) not sure about lets golf but any gameloft game i have intsalled can be moved to sd by Titanium and they still work fine for me. (Ashphalt is now like 500kb not 30mb)
If you have Titanium backup (paid version) you can try converting the app to a user app and then move it to the sd and see if there are any problems with the app. I dont have the paid version but i have seen people have moved the pre-installed games onto the sd card with this method.
I know this is probably not the answer you are seeking but it will gain you some more mb's

Fire up adb and use the pm setInstallLocation 2 command, nearly every app can be moved to the sd card then, including all the gameloft games
Yes i know. But its pain when widgets e.t.c are installed to the sd so i dont use setInstallLocation 2 anymore too lazy to move them lol . I was just merely replying to the Ashphalt cannot be moved post

I use the apps2sd pro app, it lets you move apps to and from /data/ with just a long press, you can even set an ignore list
So i Got an S4. I rooted it and im running stock 4.2.2 XXUBMEA firmware. With the new update, i can move apps to the SD card, but App data is still internal. you cannot move app data. About 7gb of my internal memory is already taken up by android which leaves me with around 9.23gb left. after installing all my necessary apps, i have left about 7.3gb internal storage left. The problem is here. Most HD games these days have Data files around 1gb. for example, games like Asphalt 7, Batman and GTA Vice City. they all have sd data of around 1gb. And as you know, on the s4, unfortunately, you can only put Sd data on the internal storage and you cannot put it in the micro SD card. So, in order to play these HD games, i have to use my internal memory. By doing this, i wont have much memory left and will probably run out of memory after 3-5 HD games. What do you think is the best solution for this? How do i play a lot of HD games on my device? After all, I paid a lot for this phone. I hope i did not waste my money. Remember i am rooted. Is there anything i can do?
Thanks
Help will be much appreciated.

I've tried 4 apps so far on my tab 2. App2sd, Link2SD, GL to SD Directory Bind
the 1st 2 just did not work. GL to sd works but its limited (im using the free version). I have a lot of games, i do not have a count yet but at least 15. when im in GL to sd it only shows about 10 of them.... my number maybe off but nonetheless i cant move all my apps
i just recently (literally like 5 min ago) was able to get Directory Bind to work. This video helped a lot. Except he did not point out that when you start the app, in the bottom right hand corner the button needs to be on (minuscule but made the difference).
I hope this helps.

Give FolderMount a try.
Hi.
I recently bought max Payne from the play store. Once it downloaded I noticed I'm lower than usual on storage. I checked disk usage and sure enough max Payne was taking up almost 3 GB. It's only supposed to take 1.4gb.
I've attached the screenshot here. The data is taking its own space. And the apk is taking its own space. I can't find the apk in file manager either.
Is it safe to delete it? How can I?
Also is there any way around this silly Samsung limitation of not being able to copy anything app related to external storage. What's the use of having a 32gb card if I can't use it and can only have one big game at a time :/
On stock rom I was able to move all the app data to SD card.
It's google's idea not to move apps to the external storage.
Have you tried reinstalling the game?
The "extra data" is most likely either downloaded extra game data or simply game cache. So it's doubtful it won't stay away.

I have this option of moving games to sd card. But after clicking move to external storage only 2 mb is moved to card and the rest stays in internal memory. This is the case with every app.
Are you able to move compete apps?
I am using a GPE rom right now and it doesn't have the option.
CM12 has but, like you said, it doesn't move the whole app.
You could try Folder Mount
