Leaving Apple........S4 questions - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
After 5 years of Apple (not a fanboy) I've had enough, seen the specs for the S4 & some of its features and feel it's time to change.
I've bought every version of the iPhone since the 3G, que'd up or pre ordered every new release but now........ I've just lost interest the iphone is beautiful to look at, but features & inovation have deserted the iphone. So I've pre ordered a S4 which I will hopefully get on release day here in the UK, so for when it arrives I have a few questions
All my tunes & songs are in itunes, will I be able to transfer them, With album art etc?
Currenty use Atomic Floyd earbuds, so can make & recieve calls & skip tracks on the move (cycling) can I buy the same for S4
Books, can I transfer to the S4
I'm quite a user of emoji on my iphone, just in text. this standard in android?
I know I'm going to lose a load of apps, but I'm sat here looking through my iphone & hardly use any of them anyway lol, Just cant wait to bluetooth songs & pics, have files on my phone (in folders) i can access/amend/email just freedom to do these things Apple strangle!, not to mention expandable memory, battery swapping, playing AVI's without converting & pissing about in itunes......
Looking forward to an actual upgrade, something new

all itunes music is compatible with the stock S4 music player, yes with cover art and tags
I'm not sure about the earbuds, but those features SHOULD work
not sure about books either, are they DRM protected?
and even though I'm not sure, I think the stock messaging app does support emoji,
but even if it doesn't, you're free to install another one

Well first congrats, the iPhone 5 is great but change is awesome. I believe that there is a way to import your songs from the iPhone 5 to S4, don't quote me on this but I think it was introduced with the S4 ( I have to look it up), otherwise there are apps like doubletwist that should work. Not sure about books.
Also the S4 should come with headphones that let you skip track, answer calls all that good stuff.

Yeah I know it will come with some earphones, but will be after some premium ones. (normally never take the originals out the box)
I love the iphone 5 for its simplicity & elegance, have it jailbroke to install extra features but for me, its not enough....... Apple (since Jobs) isn't a leader, it's a follower.

I think even Samsung KIES has an option to import iTunes. I don't know about the artwork though.
My GF uses isyncr. It also works over wifi. She gets her album art as well. The only thing that might not transfer is music you bought through iTunes.
But there are dozens of ways to get your music and playlist back with album art. The thing about Android is that there are more than 1 ways to do things.

Music = drag and drop on windows = done

Just copy all of your songs from iTunes into a music folder either on your phone or a microSD card. The album are should come with them.

I recommend GoSMS for SMS messaging. You get an awesome Quick Reply and it's VERY customizalble. It supports Emoji and theming. Check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
All in all, I think you will be happy with the GS4. I also had every iPhone (except the 5) and the freedom I found with Android was well worth it.

There's multiple apps you can use to text emojis. Go SMS is the one I use. I also figured out that if you set your twitter account up to be able to tweet via sms, you can text the number (I think it's like 40404) and use an emoji in the text if for some reason you want to tweet an emoji.

Music: Yes, you can transfer all with no issues. I get music from iTunes all the time. You can't transfer from iTunes itself, you'll need to either drag and drop, import iTunes playlists to other PC/Mac players like mediaMonkey, or get the app iSyncr which wirelessly (or wired) syncs directly with iTunes, the only thing is it's like 4USD. Worth it though. Albums, tags, and all will transfer to and from.
Earbuds: Yes, they will work. The only thing you can't do with them is raise / lower volume. If it has a mic and all that will work great, so will play/pause answer/hangup. I have a pair of Beats with ControlTalk for iDevices and it works great for me.
Books: Not sure. I never use books, If they're from apple then most likely not. Android does support books (obviously), just don't know about the compatibility if you get it from iTunes.
Emoji: Yes, the stock keyboard and many other on the Play store all fully support them.
You will LOVE android. The S4 is one if not the best device to get once it's out. Hope to see you on XDA, and don't forget to root to have even more fun!

For your iTunes music:
1) download google's music manager to your Mac/PC
2) sync music manager with your iTunes music folder
3) download google play music when you get your S4
4) voila! Your entire iTunes music library is now on your S4 with cover art that you can stream from the cloud.

really
So you really wanna leave?I just wanna one now.

Welcome to android and enjoy your honeymoon by managing all these things. yes S4 could well be your next GF
As said by many, songs should work easily as well as books. I have used a lot of variety of earbuds, I found all compatible. Regarding emoji, handcent sms is the best app.

Contents you can sync:
1.Sync Contacts and Calendar
On your iPhone go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Set up a new "Microsoft Exchange" account or add Gmail account by going to Add account > Gmail.
Input your email address and login info.
Select "Server" then either input the ME server address or "m.google.com" for Gmail.
On the final screen, select what you want to import—Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and/or Reminders—then hit Accept.
2.Sync Photos, Music and Videos
Windows:
Connect the iPhone with the PC.
Right-click your iPhone, select Explore and copy the media files to your desktop.
Connect the Android phone with PC, and drag and drop the iPhone photos and videos to your Android pictures folder DCIM, music goes to Music.
Mac:
Connect the iPhone with the Mac.
Open the Image Capture and download these files to the desktop.
If you are using new Android runs ICS or above, download Android File Transfer Utility to your Mac, and then drag-and-drop.
Android can't sync with iTunes, so after the syncing of media, you'll need an alternative service to load new media onto the device. You can use Google Play to help you load your collection directly from iTunes.
3.Sycn SMS and voice mail
You need a app to help you sync SMS messages. The free app My SMS is the good option which syncs text messages among your various devices—phones, tablets, laptops, and whathaveyou—and is compatible with both Mac and Windows. Download the app on both phones and follow the setup instructions and the app will easily help you do that.
For the voice mail messages, you just need to pay some money. Programs like PhoneView (Mac - $30) and iExplorer (Mac and PC - $35) can be quite helpful. You'll be able to copy not just voicemail to the desktop, but also your call history, contacts, bookmarks, notes, and media files as well with them.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&hl=en
You can always use Google Books, but I am sure you would have to purchase each book over again. It WOULD be nice for publishers to have some kind of cross platform syncing for something like books, magazines...

BBC iPlayer and syncing with iTunes?

Hi there.
Can a kind soul please tell me whether the Hero will be compatible with iPlayer and if I will be able to sync my (non-DRM) iTunes music across to the phone?
Also, how often does the Facebook widget update - is it pretty much 'real time'?
Thank you, in advance.
i am using the hero port for the g1 and bbc iplayer works with the beepPlayer app off the android market, there is no facebook widget afaik, and you should be able to sync the music fine by just copying it to the phones SD card
Yes, the beebplayer works fine on the release devices.
And the facebook and flickr updates in the people app are every 2,4,8,12 or 24 hours, depending on what you set it to (2 hours is the default)
As for the Music, raider is correct, you just drag and drop to the memory card and you're done.
I think that the original poster might be moreso hoping to have the organization of the itunes app transfer over with some order to the phone.
From what I understand, it works right now, but Steve Jobs has mentioned that it may not always be so, as I am guessing this was kind of an unexpected (unauthorized as well?) compatibility.
Caid.

iTunes doesn't work with any Android device. It works with Apple products & the Palm Pre & thats becaues Palm faked it as an iPod most likely with iPod device/vendor IDs.
I didn't really want it to work with the Hero, as such, but...
...simply to be able to easily listen to my AAC (non DRM) songs on the device. Should this be possible?

Best way to copy music to phone

Does anyone have any suggested techniques for copying MP3 or WMA files to the phone (SD or Internal memory)?
What I've discovered is that synching with Media Player will transfer over these hidden files (album art, desktop.ini, and folder.jpg). These hidden files seem to mess with the way the Sense music player is picking up the music and what ends up happening is that in the music players details view, it does indeed break up the artists and the albums etc. HOWEVER, in the default view (the one that shows the album covers) it doesn't know what to do and only shows you the album cover of the particular album you are listening too. There's no way to get to the other album without going into the details menu and selecting it from there.
Whew - SO, all that being said; what I found is that if I delete the album art, desktop.ini and folder.jpg files BEFORE manually dragging and dropping the music over to the phone it seems to resolve the problem.
So is there a more streamlined approach to doing this?

Put your INC in DISK DRIVE mode and copy your files to the SD card using Windows Explorer. You can also take out the SD card, put it in a reader, plug that into your PC's card reader, and put the files there via Windows Explorer.
Of course, all this presupposes that your MP3 files are correct (e.g., their ID3 tags are correct; and the album art was already integrated).
I use Tunesync, there're also isyncr, doubletwist, websharing....
The thing I like about these sync software is that they put your music in a playlist, which all the players can see.
First thing I would do is ditch the default android player though and stay away from Music PlayerPro too (just a skinned default player-same options same problems).
I am using bTunes, I think it's already abandon by the developer, but since it works and I already paid for it so might as well.
I recommend Mort Player if you don't look at it too much, Man!..that UI is just plain Ugly.
DoubleTwist is great. It also syncs your videos as well. Best part is it only syncs what you want. You create playlists and it syncs based on their contents

Thanks for the info everyone. I guess the bottom line is that music software on Android is still in infancy stages with a lot of options but nothing that really just stands out. I hate to admit it but looks like Apple has a (+) in this department for now. My Incredible is a filler phone to hold me over until with WINMO7 stuff starts to hit Verizon so just looking for the best combinations of software on this thing.
I'm totally new to Android but I would have thought that the folks over at Google would have taken the media experience a little more seriously and spent some time on those aspects out of the box.

Google was doing fine, 2.1 was solid. It uses up battery like there's no tomorrow, but solid.
2.2 seem like it's coded by 5 year olds... in Mongolia...using Vtech's Vsmile system....during recess. Maybe that's why the battery last longer, nothing works. Could be a way to make us pay for third-party apps (free enterprise at work).
Bus, now that's just plan 'ol funny. Educational (for me) at the same time.
I use the free version of Media Monkey on my Win XP desktop and Meridian on my Dinc. Then I sync playlists (like I used to on my iPhone 3G). Works like a champ.
The iPhone is far superior in the music catagory (dsp, organization, genius) but u have to keep inmind it stemed from an ipod. That said the closest ive come to it is boomboxoid but its terribly slow and often unresponsive. Which is why i primarily use pandora now...an ipod like music player is the app i want most!

I've mentioned bTunes above. It's the exact replica of the iPhone/iPod player.

Google Music. Will it be Android's answer to iTunes, or more?

I don't want this to be another "OMG, the video support on XOOM SUX!" thread, but rather a discussion about what you expect in the future from Google. Mostly just fun speculation, I suppose.
I know a lot of people do complain about the video support, but I'm an optimist, so I am eagerly awaiting what Google has in store for Android tablets. It's obvious they have SOMETHING up their sleeves, as we've seen hinted in a few articles here and there. Cloud syncing is one of the more recent little nuggets of gold we've seen.
Apple users have iTunes, which helps keep everything going smoothly for their music and video syncing. When Google finally gets around to unveiling its music service, what would they have to do in order to make it MORE useful to Android users than iTunes is to iOS users? That is, what can they do to make it more than just a clone of iTunes?
Obviously, cloud syncing would be one of the things that sets it apart. I'm really looking forward to being able to share music with my XOOM and my Android handset.
What I'm wondering the most about is weather the service will be a standalone app, or will it be tied to the market, like Books are? Which would you rather see? A separate system altogether, or the addition of "Music" and "Video" tabs alongside the "Android Apps" and "Books" tabs that we already have? I actually wouldn't mind seeing the latter. It just makes sense, really. And with the cloud syncing support suggested, it actually looks like this might be what they plan to do. However, there needs to be some things supported in the app, such as the ability to convert video files into XOOM formats without the use of a 3rd party app, and a better way to add album art and change info on sideloaded songs than what iTunes uses (That is, being able to edit the files directly on the mobile device instead of just on the computer.) I also hope that Google is working on a standalone video player that doesn't rely on the gallery, and hope they are considering supporting more video codecs.
[edit]
Also, I want to see a better setup for the PC side of the application. iTunes has a lot of crap to navigate through, and just seems messy to me. Again, the cloud syncing will make this so much better. It'll be great to drop a song into the program from my computer and have it pop up on my XOOM without having to plug the XOOM into the computer.
What do you want to see in Google's Music (and video) service? Speculate away!

How to transfer iphone/itunes music to android phone.

Thought I'd post this in case it might help someone. I just switched from an iphone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and am having a fun time (read: ***** of a time) transferring my stuff over. After a lot of reading, I found a way to move my iphone music including playlists over to the new phone.
Here was my situation - I had a bunch of mp3s and playlists on my iphone that were not synced to itunes, and if you know how that works, if you try to sync your phone to the itunes library, what happens is that whatever is on your phone gets erased and overwritten with your music library in itunes.
I looked online for a simple step by step solution but instead of finding one, I found a bunch of different piecemeal solutions that only took care of some of my problems and did not have the entire process from start to finish so I had to devise my own way using bits and pieces of other solutions. Here's what I did:
btw, all apps I used were free.
1. Install and run Sharepod on your PC. This program will export the music and playlists on your iphone to your PC. You want to choose the Backup Ipod option and then create a folder on your PC to store the music files. Also, you want to make sure you check the Import my music to Itunes box. This will add all of the files and playlists to your itunes library.
2. Install an app called easy phone tunes on your phone.
3. Install the PC component of easy phone tunes on your PC.
4. Run the app on your phone and follow the prompts.
5. Run the program on your PC and follow the prompts.
6. Sit back and relax while all of your music and all of your playlists are transferred over.
Very simple, very easy, and worked great for me. Hope it helps someone.
Another method you can use is DoubleTwist(free in the market). It sync's from iTunes
I create a playlist in iTunes on my PC just for my phone. Installed DoubleTwist on my PC, and my phone, tell DoubleTwist which playlist to sync, and it does the rest

+1 for DoubleTwist!
I use the wireless version, which is a little silly since I am sitting in front of my PC when I sync.
The only complaint that I have with DoubleTwist (player) is that it doesn't work with my BT headphone controls. Still looking for a solution there but for the synch, it is great!

I looked at Kies but didn't see an option to transfer sms/texts to the S3.
Oh god, I have nothing but bad things to say about DoubleTwist. It has duplicated my music, erased my playlists, and locked up my computer multiple times. My advice would be to avoid it.
I used Easy Phone Tunes. It's a variant of the utility Samsung put out a few weeks ago to help iTunes users sync their stuff to their new Galaxy easily. It's pretty simple. Plus the developers emailed me back within 2 hours. I didn't think I'd get a response at all.

Music syncing software?

I am coming from an iPhone and boy boy BOY do I miss the seamless syncing between iTunes and my iPhone..
It was nothing short of great.....
Now that I am rocking an S4, I am definitely missing this feature. I am using Winamp right now, but its not very good at deciphering stuff..and Samsung Kies is a joke.
I am looking for a piece of software that would rock at syncing my music with my S4 in a nice fashion. Any suggestions as I am really REALLY missing my iPhone 5 now simply because of a very simple feature...

I agree, if you are plugging the phone in, just treat it as a drive and drag and drop. Syncing with iTunes is a big pain and a waste if you don't use song counts or any of that nonsense. If you already have your music organized by artist and album, then copy/paste is a lot faster.

Exactly. Especially since Android runs a media scanner whenever you unplug, so all your Music apps like stock or Poweramp will see the changes instantly. And you can sort by folder so this is a great solution.
Reviving the topic, to see if anyone has a suggestion for PC software to sync music with the Galaxy S4.
I would prefer to have a program to handle this, so I don't have to manually build the folder structure (artist\album\file.mp3) and also, so I don't have to remember which new files I've gotten that need to be uploaded. Right now I'm using Windows Media Player, it worked reasonably well with my Xperia Ion, but with the Galaxy I have to stop and restart the sync and then stop it again, since it never reaches 100% even though all the mp3 files were uploaded. Also, it is not really syncing, if I change anything in already uploaded files, like tag or artwork, the changes don't go through, even if I manually delete the old file from my phone card.
I've tried Winamp, it doesn't recognize the SD card and wants to upload the files to the phone internal memory. Both Kies and Songbird never really connect to the device, they stay trying to connect for a long time. And Doubletwist Desktop does not update the music library when some files are added, deleted or changed.
SPOTIFY... 8 bucks a month for an unbelievable amount of music. The offline mode makes tracks accessible without and data and you can share music with your friends. You can also check out what they are jamming to and discover new music. I don't even know what people use iTunes anymore. Spotify also has a desktop interface so you can enjoy your music at the office on the Pc or Mac

Thanks for the info. I'm not at all interested in all the "social" stuff, I just need an efficient way to sync my PC music library with my phone. I considered Google Music at some point, since it was offering 20,000 songs (double my library) for free, that you need to upload. Problem is that there is no easy way to tell the program to store it in a specific folder in the SD card. Also, I don't think you can just make the whole library offline, you have to do it track by track, or maybe album by album. How is Spotify in these two issues? Although, quite frankly, for almost $100 a year I'll probably stick with WMP for free.
