I cant seem to get over 500kbps on my ATT connection, does anyone now any good APN settings? My Tmobile Nexus 4 gets over 9mbps while sitting next to it. Both are HSPA+
Why not use your nexus 7 over t-mobile network?
It may be that you just have a stronger connection to t-mobile's network where you are.
Att has coverage in more areas, so by having one on tmo and the other on Att I was hoping to make sure that I can always get data access. Looks like the trade off is better coverage, worse speeds.

anyone know if tmobiles hspa is better than sprints wimax
By actual performance yes, but by technicality and service, that's not necessarily true.
What was nice about t-mobile hspa+ upgrade was they even sped up 3g service for regular 3g users. But their network is spotty unless you're in texas pretty much.
My friend with a t-mo TP2 never gets reliable speeds. Its always fluctuating. Idk about the G2 though with its hspa+

I was under the impression that hspa+ requires certain hardware like wimax so the only phones that actually utalize the service are the g2 and mytouch 4g. Technically neither wimax nor hspa+ is really "4g" by the official definition, however, from what I've read, wimax is probably the closest we have right now. Hspa+ is an upgraded 3g network, like 3.5g. Both will run faster than 3g though so its more about what area you live in and the kind of coverage you get than which is faster. I know sprint doesn't have coverage in a lot of areas, but I'm not sure about tmobiles network.

Yes and no..the reason why wimax right now is that speed is because sprint is only running it in 10mhz of spectrum..if they run it in larger mhz it will be faster...
overall though while HSPA+ on t-mobile you might get faster speeds it will diminish greatly..HSPA+ is not as efficient as wimax, thus cannot support as many simultaneous users as wimax can.
And yes HSPA+ upgrade should offer some benefit to HSPDA devices as well even if they cannot utilize the HSPA+ speeds..
Wimax is also suppose to offer lower latencies...but I don't know if that can be seen or not..I do get around 100ms when I test which isn't too bad...but some got a lot higher...
The great thing about hspa+ and hsdpa is that the switch is made without affecting the user. There's no need to turn anything on or off and there's no message popping up in your taskbar. You can go from GPRS to EDGE to UMTS to HSDPA to HSPA+ or any combination of the 5 without doing anything. Your internet just gets faster or slower depending on where you are. Tmo has good building penetration and MUCH faster speeds than any other network today.

Herd sprint is leasing the 4g curently for verizon and tmoible(gsm cdma) I don't care its what I was told. As far as speed? Id like to see 4g at all.

i have the g2, on my epic in my area i would get 2.2-2.4 Mbps on tmo in same area i get a much larger coverage of the hsdpa speeds and i get about 3.5-5.0Mbps down. i have yet to see hspa+ in my about phone but i do get faster speeds with tmo.
the thing i like is its using the same radio so i get the increased speeds without loss of battery unlike wimax

+1 for mentioning the truth of 4g!
I loved my G1 with its internet speeds and voice reception when I lived in New England and its speed kicked the **** out of Spring 4g service but when I moved out to the midwest I couldn't get 3g barely anywhere yet alone HSPA+ and Sprint is much better overall out here. So pretty much its better as long as you live in a highly populated area that they deem is worthy for their service.
I had the G2 but due to my house being in a t-mobile black hole I decided to switch to sprint.
I live/work in an area that has both HSPA+ and Wimax and in the areas that I had a strong signal, HSPA+ would d/l at 2-6Mbps and with Wimax I average 4-5Mbps.
For me, T-mobiles coverage was spotty. Sprints has been much better.
As for the ease of switching between networks, I had a really hard time with t-mobile staying on HSPA+ even when there was a decent signal. It was much more prone to staying on the slower 3G network unless I manually forced it to stay on HSPA+
IMO, Long term, since Wimax and LTE will be the prevailing technologies, T-mobile will most likely be changing their network over at some point. HSPA+ is just helping them to buy some time so they don't fall to far behind in the carrier data race.
It all depends on what market you are in. I live in the midwest and TMobile coverage sucks all around. ATT isn't much better. ATT still doesn't even have 3G in the city I live in, which is only 10 miles north of the biggest metro area in the state. (I laugh at my one buddy who has an iPhone) It's basically Sprint, Verizon or US Cellular if you want quality coverage here.

I'm not sure what your 4g signal is where you live, but even in Denver, where 4g isn't official yet, i get anywhere from 4-9 Mbps. Then again, it isn't Live yet, so it could go down as more people start using the 4g service.

Thats about what I get here in Baltimore and we had WiMax first. I average about 6-7 Mbps inside my house
Funny, I live in philadephia, pa area. I have epic, 2 of my friends have tmobile {hd2 and tmobile gs phone}.
I get 2-4 mbps, they get 3-4, shockingly their upload is better as well. Seems their faster coverage is better on the outer areas of my 4g coverage and get it where I can not sometimes[suburbs and south nj]

Sprint wimax seems pretty useless here in san francisco. It gets pretty good data rates when it works but you pretty much have to be outdoors in the open. The main problem though is that it's very spotty and every time it falls back to 3g or switches back up to 4g there's no connectivity AT ALL for at least 30 seconds or so, which makes it more or less unusable. I just leave it turned off. Also the battery doesn't even last half a day with it enabled.
One problem I've noticed w/Sprint 4G in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale -- your connection drops & IP address changes whenever you 1)get ip lease from a tower, then 2)move somewhere more than 1 tower-hop away into a new tower's area with 3 bars of signal strength.
The moment you hit 3 bars, the connection drops to release your ip address back to the first tower... but the phone will have no connectivity at all for a few seconds, and won't try to reconnect to 4g for a few minutes unless you manually toggle 4g off & on to force an immediate reconnect.

Any idea what average ATT data speeds are? Specifically in Denver. What does your Focus max out at on 3g? Reason I ask is because I am tired of how Sprint's 3g is basically limited to 2mbps max, anything higher is 4G which kills your battery and is spotty. That's if you have a 4G device even. I know that Tmobile is great with HDSPA and HSPA+ I used to get 7mbps on my Vibrant over 3g with no issues here. How is ATT though, is it pretty similar?
2 to 3mbps down, 300k up is what optimal AT&T 3G can get. The upload speed is capped by AT&T on all but iPhones.
On average, the download speed is about 1mbps. In populated big cities, it can be much lower. So, it all depends how many AT&T customers are on the same tower as you.
Ah I see, so I won't see more than 2 on focus more than likely. I have issues with arrive Zune streaming completely screwing up when I get or send a text, I'm assuming it is due to simubtaneous voice and data not being available, I wonder if that problem exists on focus

As long as you're on 3G signal, you have simultanous voice and data. Not sure about your problem. Maybe due to the lack of multitasking?
If I order this will I get HSPA+ speeds on the device? If not, what's the point of spending 700 bucks and only getting to use 3G speeds?
This would be my only drawback from getting this phone
On a 4G+ plan AND with help setting you up with a 4G+ imei (my phone is on a skyrocket imei)....you'll get hspa+ speeds. You won't on GoPhone even if you get a 4G sim card.
I have a Note on AT&T and get the same speeds as I did on my GS2, which is 6 down on average in my area. The HSPA + speeds are not effected on the Note for AT&T, only on Tmobile you will get 2G/EDGE speeds because of their baseband.

Ok, right now I'm on the iPhone 4S so I have a data plan. My local AT&T said they would give me a SIM card. So if I order the Note, get the SIM, and change some settings (I'm assuming you know these setting I need to change) I will get 4G (HSPA+) speeds?
EDIT: getting a 4G imei is what I meant (how do I get one so I can get 4G speed)
I have a Note on AT&T. Had to get the correct APN's in there (find the thread with them). With a 4G SIM and data plan, fastest speed test result I have gotten is 11MBps down and 1.1up. Average is 3-5MBps down and 1Mbps up. Usually shows H+ icon so we'r'e good there! You also have to play around with what modem works best in your area. I am using the KK5 modem and battery life is amazing but initial connectivity is a tad laggy in some areas of SoCal.
So I have the LTE Note and the 3G 6800GT. I called AT&T and confirmed the IMEI for both are correctly registered, and I assume the PTA data (didn't double check that, but I get messages on both, etc.). I'm running a custom rom in the 7.7, stock based RC3 from sk806 (sp?).
So of course the LTE speeds are very fast, but that's not the point. The point is that it seems to me that 3G speeds are slower than they were a couple of months ago, when I still had my iPhone 4.
Either that, or the 7.7 is not HSPA+. With the iPhone I used to get 4K+ down/at least 1/1.5 up. With the 7.7 3G, I never get to 3K down, more like 2200/2800 down, while i only reached 1k once up. Mostly I get 400/700kbs up.
Is that anybody else's experiences, or is that my particular area?
Thanks.
My HSPA+ speeds on my GS2 (international) haven't changed recently. The obvious answer is that your area's network has become more congested, since none of the speeds you listed is even capping out bandwidth on vanilla 3G.
APN could certainly have an effect as well. I still get the best speeds using pta, but you should make sure that's actually the APN you're using. I don't know what AT&T considers "correctly registered" for the P6800, but according to my best understanding of their logic, it should be on the fauxG plan and using the phone APN, which tends to be more congested than pta. AT&T will also let you use medianet/non-smartphone data with the P6800, and wap.cingular is definitely a slower connection. Check your APN settings, and the plan you're on--you can only use pta with the "4G LTE" data plan, not the "4G" data plan.
Well, one reason is that I don't live exactly on a city center, so my speeds are always slower than most (25K tops for LTE, 4K tops for 3G). The thing is, by 7.7 is doing half of what the iPhone used to do on the same spot (home), so I'm not sure. Going to try my wife's blackberry Torch and see what it gets.
But yeah, it might be my area. But I was just wondering if it makes sense for AT&T to make LTE even faster sacrificing a bit of 3G speeds, when available bandwidth is limited already. Looks like AT&T might think that it would make LTE more attractive and would "spread the word" about AT&T data faster this way. Power users would be on LTE anyway, so they wouldn't notice.
I just got 3.5 Mbps down HSPA+ on my 6800 in the same spot where I'm getting 35Mbps down on my LTE Note. That's about how it has been previously.
Been using T Mobile $30 100 minute 5GB and I have to say I am thoroughly unimpressed. I live in my college town and I only get HSPA+ when I'm not at my house (otherwise its edge when I am at home). Amazingly, on my campus I get 1G in buildings.
So I'm concerned because I want to move to Straight Talk, but will I essentially see the same results with Straight Talk depending on whose Sim I use? My house is in HSPA+ territory for my home and campus for ATT, is it worth the slower speed for consistency? How slow is ATT HSPA+ compared to T More?

Without somebody from your area to give you specific information you won't know without trying.
That said I've tried ST ATT and ST TMo on my N4, ATT gave me slightly more 3G coverage but I was seemingly capped to ~1.5Mbps of data in most areas, Tmo gives me the coverage I was used to (I had Tmo for 3yrs) but I see ~5Mbps in most areas. I kept Tmo and personally I only care about data outside of the house, I have wifi at home so it's a non-issue.
I can speak from my experience with AT&T and TMO(in NYC). I'm on a post paid AT&T plan and the $30 prepaid 100min 5gb TMO plan.
In NYC my speeds with TMO are much faster. On average with AT&T I get anywhere from 3mb-6mb download speeds depending where I am. With TMO I've been seeing more like 9MB-14MB down. Upload speeds seem to be pretty close to one another
With my AT&T sim I do get service in more places than with TMO. In a few NYC subway stations for example, I'll get a signal with AT&T and nothing with TMO. I also have a stronger AT&T signal when I'm indoors compared to TMO. To me the speed is more important especially on a device with limited storage where I have to stream a lot of media

I tried TMo and was happy with speed of 12 - 18 Mbs; however, indoor performance at home, some offices, and large stores was disappointing. I would be on Edge or lose signal altogether while indoors. I switched to ST AT&T and couldn't be happier. My speeds are 4 - 6 Mbs, but I have signal almost everywhere. This is in South Florida, YMMV.
Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I will just need to order both SIM cards to see how everything works out
