Rooting without unlocking - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I root my nexus 10 without unlocking it because I don't want to lose my data and its already great how it is. I just want to root so I can use the six axis controller app. I saw wugs toolkit. But his directions said to unlock first. So is that the only way or can I root without unlocking. I posted this in another thread but the other one was a little different topic so I made a new thread. Please help if you can thanks.

It's is sad... But yes you are going to have to unlock the bootloader first...
One thing you can do is have google back up the apps for you so when you reset it it will automatically install your own urgent apps... However this will not save your app data, but at least you won't have to try to remember the apps you had installed

You can relock after root and keep root... Also unlocking won't void the warranty on your Nexus 10

Ok thanks. Can i backup my data. Root it then restore or would that get rid of root

You don't need to... you can use superboot method, which doesn't need to unlock the bootloader, and you don't lose data.

Hellz yeah sixaxis app is awesome

I didn't have to unlock it at all. I just booted it by pressing all the buttons and ran the one click tool. But once you root, here is an app that will lock/unlock the boot loader for all nexus devices.

You're in the wrong forum. Unfortunate that XDA STILL hasn't given the Ray it's own form yet.. It deserves one.
Here's where the ray development stuff are (Except CM7):

That is more tricky and actually requires a but of extra skill you'll have to peel back stuff to get at the testpoint at the back of the phone etc etc... I personally didn't do it because I already had mine unlocked. You are welcome to try it.

Let me know how you get on with it
PS: For those of us that have already unlocked our bootloaders, there's no point in performing this
wooohhhh, its again so complicated...will wait for some other quick method. Like we have something for our Xperia Arc

Do it and don't look back! I was never going to then did so just before 283 was released because I didn't want to go through the rigmarole of having to downgrade to upgrade just to root, and so glad I did because I might have ended up with the 0% battery issue, PLUS it makes things like rooting so much simpler, even simpler than an app imo.
What put me off was something screwing up with the boot loader, it's a natural fear, but with Alejandrissimo and Jinx13 on call (more or less A+J? ), a fix is only an internet (and required software) connection away.
Ray can't be gingerbreaked, as there is no 2.3.2 available for it.nso there shouldn't be security issues that can be used for rooting a s-on device.
Just go ahead and unlock it.
As stated above you won't look back.

Any way to ROOT Xperia RAY with locked bootloader
What about the ZergRush exploit? Doesn't that work for the ray?
The Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit works and the Ray is in the compability list.
like what harfot said I'm pretty sure the zergrush method works for the whole 2011 xperia phones its easy to use aswell

yes there is a very easy way to do that you dont need to unlock your device for that. go to this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015467 , download the nexus 10 toolkit and install the drivers , enable debugging on your device, then select root unroot options , from there choose root + install busy box , then select superSU. and you are good to go , root without unlocking or any custom recovery.

From what I've read here, root only works for the primary user. I could be wrong, but you might want to do some more research on that subject.

Sorry harrisfayyaz, but are you sure?
I rooted my N10 some days ago with this tool and tried it without Unlocking. It did not work for me - app told me I have to unlock first before rooting. Just would like to know if I was just dumb or not ^^
Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938. It works for 100%. I did it already twice (once on 4.2.1 and then again on 4.2.2). Nexus is rooted, but lock is still there. Run *.bat file without unlocking - it works.
I dont want to doubt what you are writing but the OP from the topic says:
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!

No, through Amazon from US. So in my opinion you always can try. In worse case if it requires unlock it doesn't root your Nexus.
I also read first post but in next part of thread users noticed that unlock is unnecessary. I tried it twice and works every time

After root, lock your Nexus by NRT.
this method worked for me
however it was a pain to get drivers working, i had to get universal naked drivers
one question, will future otas work?
Should work as long as you don't change system files (OTA checks hash codes of them).
I also used universal naked drivers.

Rooting with locked bootloader..

Guys just got my n4 few mins ago.. I don't actually want to unlock the bootloader yet, just root the stock that's it..
Actually my younger bro is gonna use it for sometime and he doesn't do all this, i just wanna root his phone so that he could use titanium later on for backing up and move to a different phone while i take over the n4.. Would unlock the bootloader then so i get a fully wiped phone..
Dev section is too big to search for this.. Can anyone just link me to the thread/tutorial for rooting the stock without unlocking bootloader ??
Thanks

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. If you just got the phone a few minutes ago, what's the harm in unlocking the bootloader? If you unlock it now, it will save you the hassle of wiping all the data from the phone in the future.
Also, just because you have an unlocked bootloader doesn't mean that you have to change ROMs or anything. You can always lock it later if you need to, but having an unlocked bootloader gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to rooting.
Edit: Here's a guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179

Hi I see you want to root to use titanium backup. If you don't want to unlock/root you could use this backup service called carbon. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en
There is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader atm.
Just unlock with wuggs toolkit, then its as simple as an app from play store to lock/unlock. Geez, the urban legends of the horrors and sins of rooting, don't believe everything on the Internet.

BootUnlocker: Unlock your bootloader without loosing data

I received a news about this Google Play app: BootUnlocker.
This app should unlock the BL without wiping data.
Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker
XDA link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731993
BUT how to root without unlocking the BL? CF Auto Root unlocks the BL and flashing SuperSU requires an unlocked BL so...
Is app is only useful if you already rooted. It can switch between unlock and lock.
But If you are not rooted you could use Helium to backup your user data:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=de
Or maybe this is also working (adb backup and restore):

This will now work on model versions C6902/C6903/C6906/C6943

At the moment, I think that the only solution would be to backup apps and games is using an app called Helium. As far as I know that is the only working solution available on the market. Users have reported that the free version does not always work properly and that the safest would be to use the 5$ premium version of the app and to backup to a cloud storage, so I would recommend buying the premium app. Here is a link to the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup.license&hl=en
You can backup your photos by either choosing cloud synching in Google+, Dropbox or any alternative storage or by transferring them over to your computer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dropbox.android&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.plus&hl=en
Don't forget to backup your text messages as well. The following app works well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en
And also any saved wifi networks using the following app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryanamaral.wifi.passwords&hl=en
