Hello guys,
I have this problem with my new Nexus 4.
Sometimes for no clear reason for me diplay on phone turns black and nothing more happens. Software keys are not visible too. I have to hard turn off by holding power button, then it's ok for a while. This happened twice.
I am running stock Android 4.2.2. stock kernel, not rooted.
Thanks for all replies.

My N7 was flawless until some days ago.
Usually to turn on, I had to press the power button for 4s and it would turn on, never ever failed. Also on the boot sequence (the X of nexus), it took relatively low time, even when I had all of my currents apps installed (nothing changed).
For the last days, it's happening that sometimes the device doesn't wake up after pressing the button. I've checked and I have to press it for 20-25s in order to see the "Google" logo and have it start booting.
Also, the nexus "X" boot animation also randomly takes like 4x longer, and it seems to not have any relation with the 20s pressing issue, since it happened me both with the 4s and 20s pressing power-on times.
But both of those issues came together.
Anyone else with the same issue? Would a factory reset solve the problem?
Thank you in advance.

How much memory is free on your N7? I've seen posts from people who have had similar issues when they came close to filling up the memory on their N7.

16 GB model, more than 6GB left.
It has been like that for the last 2 weeks.
I am current using PA mar11 build with franco r102 kernel.
I have issues bringing the menu up when you hold the power button. My power button is not broken, because after a restart (using power toggles) it works again.
Happens randomly. I have searched the forums and have not seen anyone mention this, has anyone else experience this?
Update: Do a fresh wipe, problem will go away
What issues do you have exactly? I mean, what exactly do you see when you long-press your power button?

after a long-press no menu comes out and my screen turns off like I pressed it normally.
I have the exact same problem, except that my nexus 4 isn't rooted and I can't use toggle buttons to restart. So basically I cannot restart my phone unless i let the battery running out or i reset the phone.
Weird... I just got this too... restart and it's working again... but for how long.... and I never would have noticed if I wasn't trying to take a screenshot!

I have exactly the same problem running slimrom 6.5 and anarkia kernel.
After a reboot the reboot menu always comes up. After a while it doesn't work anymore. Turning on/off the screen always works, the problem only affects long press.
Has anyone a sultuion for that?

Did anyone find a solution to this problem?
My Nexus 4 is now having this same issue
I thought I was the only one! It happened after a bit of rain with my phone in the pocket and I thought that was the cause but after holding it down and seeing it reset I see that it is not. Wonder why this is happening.
Note: I am running completely stock 4.3 at the moment with a locked bootloader, but this has also happened on 4.2.
I got this issue with franco kernel. putting back the original kernel fixed the issue for me. I was able to reproduce the problem with another nexus 4 phone. there's maybe a config to tweak or i'm messing something up.

Exactly same problem.. But a long press of the button for about ten to fifteen shuts down the phone in my case.. Stock 4.3 no root
I no longer have this issue. The fix: fresh wipe
Hi there,
I recently did a bunch of app updates. I've been running Jelly Bean 4.2.2 for a while and it hasnt given me any problems. After I did my app updates, now in the middle of doing something (be it using Chrome or Gallery or third party apps like Whatsapp), the phone freezes and then tells me the app isnt responding. When I force quit it, I get the top status bar (with the battery indication and what not) and also the 3 buttons underneath. Rest of the screen is black. When i press the power button, the display goes off and when I press it again, I get a grey screen (almost black). And when I press the power button again, it turns black (as in, display has been turned off). I press the power button for a while and turn off the device and turn it back on. It'll boot fine. But after a while of use, the same problem surfaces.
I ran my phone in safe mode and its working perfectly fine! I'm guessing its some app update that caused this. Is there some way of logging this or something to find out?
Thanks in advance.
Help!
Can someone help me out please?
Have you got Titanium Backup? If so, you could try freezing all your user apps and seeing if the problem goes away, and if so then defrosting them one by one.
This is a stock ROM and kernel, right?

I'm on stock ROM but not rooted. I'll check through Titanium Backup.
Thanks.
My nexus 4 doesn't respond to power buttons at time. Sometimes it works flawlessly. Sometimes it doesn't. I'm on stock android 4.3 rooted only.
I don't know whether this is hardware or software problem. Can anyone name any app that enables waking up nexus 4 using volume button?
P.s I did a full reset too.
I got the same problem after upgrading to 4.3 via OTA , also some people have the same problem

I think I have the same issue after the latest minor OTA update the week before.
The 1/4 chance that screen turns on after power button pressed about 2 seconds longer than normal.
I flashed a customer ROM based on CM10, Same issue !
I was using my Nexus 7 (2013) this morning surfing some sites, when all of a sudden my touchscreen just up and died. No laggy response, no jittery response, just nothing. I can't even unlock it when I wake it up. I can't power it off (as far as I know), since after I hold the power button down, I can't select Power Off.
I'm rooted running a stock 4.3 as fas as I know. Any ideas of where to begin? Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue when I didnt use it for 4 days. Touch would respond and when the power off dialog came up I couldnt touch it but just hold the power button longer and it will reboot. I held it for about 15 seconds maybe 20 and it will restart
Well, if that previous posters suggestion does not work, or any software-related solution, my first suggestion would be to send it back for a replacement, barring that, it sounds like something could have come loose, if you're the type to try it, you can see how that is addressed with the 2012 version:
Google for "How to Fix Nexus 7 Touch Screen Problems", the video is by Tampatec.
Happened to me too once but i was on a custom rom and kernel. I freaked out when the touch wasn't responding!
I held down to power button to power-off/reboot. It seemed to result in a bootloop and i wasn't exactly patient because i was freaking out a bit!
So, i powered down the device again, booted into recovery (TWRP) and to my relief the touch worked!! I just rebooted back to the system and everything was fine.
This happened to me on stock android 4.3 twice. I believe it is a software issue with the last one or two factory builds of 4.3 for this device. As previously stated, my problem was fixed by holding down the power button for about twenty seconds until it rebooted.

I got it to reboot and that seemed to do the trick *crosses fingers*

Had this issue too a few days ago. I connected it to my PC and rebooted it via adb reboot command.
Occasionally I get this issue after switching the screen on running completely stock 4.3, but I can solve it by holding the power button - not to reboot, but just so the menu comes up. That alone wakes the touchscreen up for me.
