Hi !
We all are very anxious about the upcoming official JB rom. But, how to be prepared to it, how to lose (almost) nothing in the process, how to do it ?
Which method do you guys recommend ?
1) Apps / data backup
- Google automatic backup :
it seems to be able to restore apps/data/settings, but will it work with a major update like ICS->JB ?
- Titanium backup :
Recommended method
the fastest and easiest way to restore apps is to use titanium backup, your ICS backups will work fine on Jellybean, moreover your progress in games etc. will be restored as well
And, how to restore the backup without root ?
Not possible !
download CF- Root 6.4 stock kernel and flash it via Odin
- Kies backup
This is XDA we dont use KIES
- will internal SD be wiped during the process ? Do I need to manual backup my games very large data for an example ?
your internal data won't be wiped so don't worry about app caches
2) The update process
- with Kies
This is XDA we dont use KIES
- with OTA
NO it will fail due to root
- with Odin
recommended method
As soon as official firmware comes out you will be able to flash it
- with CWM
wait several hours after release for someone to post a CWM zip of firmware which to your happiness will already be rooted , so no need to flash CF kernels
Other questions :
- is there already a known method to root ?
download CF- Root 6.4 stock kernel and flash it via Odin
- will I lose my 48gb Samsung Dropbox bonus ?
- if needed, where to best pick up the update file ? Sammobile ?
Standard XDA method
- Backup apps with Titanium
- Make a Nandroid backup of ICS
- Flash stock rom from XDA via Odin when released root
- Restore TB backup
On my old nexus one, I usually make a Titanium backup, flash the new already rooted rom, install Titanium and restore the backup.
I know it is a lot of questions, but I really want to upgrade without a pain. I'm used to flash, but that's the first time I really care about backups... 16gb is really a lot of data.
Thank you...

Yes

- Kies : update unavailable with a rooted stock rom (confirmation someone ?), and I don't trust it.

Standard XDA method backup apps Nandroid backup of ICS .

Wow ! That's a really fast reply for the dangerous part. Many thanks.
Could I use your informations to update the first post ?
Firstly, your internal data won't be wiped so don't worry about app caches . Secondly, the fastest and easiest way to restore apps is to use titanium backup, your ics backups will work fine on Jellybean, moreover your progress in games etc. will be restored as well. Yes , you will have to root , but it takes you 2 minutes to donload CF- Root 6.4 stock kernel and flash it via Odin- that's all, you're rooted and able to use TBackup .
Regarding an update method . As soon as official firmware comes out you will be able to flash it via Odin(can be found in development section) , but as you prefer CWM method just wait several hours after release for someone to post a CWM zip of firmware which to your happiness will already be rooted , so no need to flash CF kernels

An other pointless jb thread
I read that cf-6.4 is indeed OTA compatible. Wouldn't uninstalling busybox and su allow to do the OTA?

I'm not anxious at all.
What is the problem with KIES?
You keep all of your data/apps/settings then re-root and refreeze/install apps you want gone in titanium. Very simple! I have done this for two of the past three updates.
OTA may fail with CF-root. I guess we will have to wait and see whether it works when JB arrives, I suspect it will fail though.
Waste of space
What a waste of space this thread is. Bye Bye
hello guys, i want to downgrade because i am sick of 4.2.1. Due to the fact that i have a 8gb nexus 7(rooted) i am having memory shrtages and directorybind dont work on the latest version...so i have a few questions:
can i downgrade without losing data?if no....how do i backup my apps and dara
should i downgrade with wugs toolkit?
If it's not obvious already: you'll need to do a clean-wipe to downgrade. Just flash the appropriate gapps and you should be good to go. Keep in mind any custom kernels/zips you may have flashed that may not work on 4.1.2. -Use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps as some 4.2 system apps won't work on 4.1.2
Have you tried other 4.2 roms or different kernels? I used to get horrible battery drain and some performance issues with the stock rom and kernel, then I tried other options and got much better results

Please try a custom rom before all hope is lost. Try Rootbox
first of all i have never flashed a custom rom or kernel
secondly if i backup all my games and apps with TB when i restore it in 4,1,2 will it work properly?....as i have seen people complaining that after restoring they were stuck in bootloop...
...is there any custom roms that support directory bind or any other ways that allow playing games from usb stick?

what are GAPPS?
where can i find the appropriate gapps for 4.1.2?
can i use these steps to downgrade : http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/4...-stock-android412-android42-jellybean-ota.htm
This is what I would do:
Backup your desired apps using Titanium Backup
Install the factory 4.1.2 image using the instructions here
Root your device and restore the apps using TB
I don't know about bootloops caused by TB, but if it does you can reflash using the guide in the list.

You don't flash gapps on stock...
And we have a sticky thread for doing this; no need to leave the forum.

N4 is my 2nd Android phone (my 1st is an old HTC Magic) and have never rooted a device before.
I'd like to install PA. So do I need to root it first?
Also I have already installed some apps, I'd like to do backup before factory reset. What is the easiest way for this?
Thank you

Firstly Install carbon backup app (like titanium backup) from the play store to backup your app and app data. It is good because you don't need to root your device in order to backup.
However in order to root, you need to unlock the bootloader which will delete everything from your phone. After that it is easy to root your phone using the guides in the forum. I suggest you don't use toolkit if you want to learn how everything works.
Only after rooting, you can install PA.

You don't need to root. Open boot loader, install custom recovery preferably twrp and you can install the zip files you need. Roms come rooted by default you don't need to worry about that.
i think root will make it easy to install app

Thanks moles. I didn't know that you didn't need to be rooted to your roms. I guess you learn something new everyday. Btw I love your PA roms. This is my first android device and PA is the only ROM I've ever flash. Keep the good work.

I did the "Casual" TWRP Recovery and Root for my AT&T S4 and love it. I booted into recovery and flashed a backup image of my stock device and saved the 3.56 GB nandoid file on both the internal and external SD and put another copy of my original phone image or nandroid or backup or whatever flavor you want to call it, on my PC.
I've frozen 37 phone functions with Titanium Backup and dodged a bullet. I heard there was another over the airwaves update from AT&T a couple days ago, and I am pleased to see it never appeared on my S4. I couldn't be happier. I have yet to try any custom roms as cyanogenmod doesn't seem to be getting any love lately, plus I would not want to give up the universal remote in the on board "watch on" app.
Why do you want to undo TWRP custom recovery and lose root? Titanium Backup needs root. Did you flash a custom rom without going into recovery first and making a backup of your stock handset once you got root and TWRP?
In any case I think there is an Odin thread you need to read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40976805

well.....Theres nothing wrong with TWRP recovery and root, its just that I have no need for it. I have tried a few custom roms and none offer battery life better than that of the stock TW software so I decided to just stay stock. As you said like 2 days ago at&t rolled out another OTA, however I dont think my phone installed it. It booted into TWRP and it started installing a zip. I wasnt sure if that was the OTA or not. I just dont need the TWRP and root as of now and its kind of a hastle in my current state to flash the new OTA's instead of having it automatically install via stock recovery.
i find two items "imsqmisocket" and "media" as uninstalled in titanium backup app list.i rooted and flashed cwm just two days back but still on stock rom N9005XXUENB4. may be that i might have uninstalled them by mistake.please guide how to get these files/apps and what problems i can face because of missing files/apps.
PS.: no backup of these was done.
