So, I have a 500 GB hard drive. Using stickmount, I am easily able to browse through it on my N10. However, stickmount is only read only for ntfs file systems for now. Is there any app which might allow me to write to my hd?
Any help will be very much apprrciated.

You need a kernel that supports fuse. I'm not sure any of the existing kernels do that, but I could be wrong about that. Once fuse support comes to a Nexus 10 Kernel, you can then follow this thread for details of how to get read/write working for NTFS.

I just got my 32gb microSD card (http://tiny.cc/6dkju). I originally formatted it as NTFS so that I can transfer large files. I put it back into my EVO (cyanogen 6 froyo nightly) and it says that the card is blank. I realize that this is because its not Fat32.
My question is that: is there anyway to enable usage/compatibility with NTFS formated microSD cards?
thanks,
mark
also, i did search and couldn't find any concrete answers.
NTFS (NT File System) is a microsoft proprietary format.
No, android will not read NTFS. Format the card in the phone or fat32.
Not much reason to use NTFS, but I woulda thought Android might have support for NTFS-3g

Which in my experience, is buggy as hell.
Stick with FAT for now, or ext3 if you can.
And I swear, if a Mac-humper comes on here and says to format in HFS+, I think I might just lose it.
I tried formatting my card in ext3 through recovery and it didn't seem like it wanted to format the whole card in that format. I suppose you could format it in a linux box that way. My macbook (ahem, lol) won't do that file system, I think. Seems kinda waste of time to install linux in a virtual machine just to format a card. I wonder if the phone would ***** about the entire card being ext3? I'm lazy, so I haven't tried it to see, yet.

Don't know when you last tried it... in my experience, Debian does not include "buggy as hell" software in their stable repositories.

I tried to load up a 10GB movie file to my EVO to take to my buddy's house and watch through his PS3. I was unable to load a file that large because of the 4GB file size limit of FAT32. I'm just sayin'
by the time you transfer a 10 gig movie file to your phone, the movie will be out on cable!!

wow, 99 for a non-fishy 32 gig? nice find! EDIT: :-( they were selling it for $49 by accident about two weeks ago. Still $99 is a good deal.
Look for a program called gparted. It's free and supports almost all formats for partitioning etc. Anyway hope that helps.

so is there any file system that this phone will use that will allow file sizes beyond the 4gb limit of fat32?
edit: whoops, wrong forum/phone.. I'm asking about the epic, not the evo.. I was going to start a thread, but the forum suggested I check out this (and other threads) before I start my own.. very handy feature for those new to the forum :]
Roebeet at slatedroid has a step by step for using the Xoom usb port for host mode: http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php...le-usb-host-mode-ie-thumb-drives-on-the-xoom/
and it is on days like today that I love my Xoom that much more. By the time the devs are done designing things for this tablet, it is going to be a whole new experience. I feel sorry for people that returned theirs after not even giving it real time to grow.
so this enables host mode, but can you switch back and forth between host and client?
I guess his new boot.img that enables the USB host will be a moot point with regard to the new update coming from Moto tonight. This sucks.
an update is coming?

Regardless of the update, we will still be able to run this great mod. There has been little work done on the kernel as seen on aosp. so all the kernels floating around will still work just fine. In fact, the only kernel work committed from upstream has primarily been bcm4329 work for the wifi only models.
Will this allow me to plug in my external hard drive?

Yes, if your drive is AC powered. And u get the cable. I will release this in my next kernel release with due credits given in my OP.
how hard would it be
To have the OC and USB host lines in the boot/root img?
I would love to have this and OC at the same time!

how about portable external HD's that draw power through the usb cable. theese will also be supported too, correct?
The actual change is very minor from stock - a few extra lines in the init.rc and then the /etc/vold.fstab change.

Going on my GTAB experience, it should work. But, there might be a size restriction -- 128GB, I believe (?) and of course FAT32. Again, going on memory here from the GTAB forums.
My external HDD's are all EXT3/4 so I usually don't test them against an OTG cable.

FAT32!!!! who uses that anymore?!?!
Anyone got a good link for the right cables. The last one I bought to add storage to my jailbroke apple tv failed miserably.

Yeah I think this might be needed, since it seems that the boot.img for USB host conflicts with the boot.img for OC, rendering your tablet wifi-less. Hope we can get a workaround for this

Most of the vendors, unfortunately, because they can't hammer out a long-term solution they all can agree on. FAT32 is still used on flash-based devices because of this problem. And it is a problem.
MS, in its infinite wisdom, created exFAT to replace FAT32. But of course its proprietary and has to be licensed. Why couldn't they just open source it and allow it to used for free? That would be too easy, so they can't do that. NTFS is also proprietary, so getting OS's like Android and iOS requires reverse engineering. And HFS+ is, again, proprietary.
What would be best for consumers is that all the major vendors agree on an open-source standard (like EXT4?), and create drivers for their various OS's to support that standard. Then, we could migrate all new devices to that new standard and be done with this problem. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
(gets off soapbox)
Non zoom owner here, potiential in the future. I guess this mean flash drives not camera and phone etc or is it all the same? Wont different drivers b required?

Sold out and all the other ones on ebay will take weeks to arrive.
Anyone find a US site that we can buy one of these cables on?
Did anyone have the problem with WiFi breaking after flashing the boot.img? The only way I could get WiFi back was to boot a previous image.

Now that google owns Motorola mobility, Xooms longevity is assured I hope. Now if they can just make the micro sd card fully functional and allow me to create new google docs through xoom, I'd be a happy camper!
If you want to get full micro sd support you could try using Tiamat roms or kernels. And you can create new google docs through the browser version of Docs... I haven't tried the app, so that may not be able to.

It's not hard...just takes a pc (or mac) your Xoom cable, a micro sdcard and the android sdk, motorola drivers and the proper files and instructions which can be found in the Root Heaven thread in the General section. Check it out and don't get intimidated. If I could do it you certainly can.

I read several guides and my problem or their problem is the instructions don't say what device (PC or Xoom) they are downloading to whenever they say to download something.
I really would like to root my xoom ,at the least, in order to be able to get full function of sd.
Hi XDA'ians
I recently got my nexus 7 8GB (couldn't get the 16 GB since price diff was high in here) . Anyways I seem to feel like nexus 7 has less space, 6 GB for user usage. Currently I got only 800 MB free .
My question is there any way to increase storage of nexus 7 tabs?
You're a big boy im sure you figure out the answer to that or maybe just use search.

Search for info about USB-OTG and use that with something like a USB flash drive.
Thanks shook187, well little search made me realize that I can use OTG cable and pendrive . though android will detect the pen drive and map it where?
I'm fairly new to android and nexus 7 , so please easy on me guyz. Thanks
The device uses something like 2gb for system files and stuff like that, so effectively you would have about 6gb of storage.

You will need to unlock and root your device, which you want to do anyway if you haven't already done it, and then you can use the OTG adapter and a USB flash memory drive or external hard drive, with the help of a near little app called "Stickmount"
Don't worry, you're in the right place to ask questions and many of us remember what it was like to be new to Android.
Once you get it setup, you will use an app like root explorer, and browse to the sdcard/usbStorage/xxxx directory and it will be just like opening a folder or mapped drive on your computer.
Feel free to send me a private message if you would like and I'll help you out, and we can also chat on gtalk in real time. I help a lot of people get started that are new to Android, and I remember how overwhelming it can be.
You can purchase "Nexus Media Importer" in the play store for $1.99, it's like stick mount but does not require root. I currently use it and I love it!

Unlike most phones Nexus products only use EXT4 which supports files up to 16TB so just ensure you have enough free space and copy files like normal.
You mean does it support one file with a size of 4gb or just 4gb of random files?
ETA: I don't have enough free space right now to try it but just plug it in and see if it will transfer the file.

OMG, thank you very much. I own Nexus 7 about two months and I considered he is using FAT32, so only 4GB files
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to store files 4GiB and greater on the nexus7's /sdcard partition, even though it is ext4. There is a layer of software stuck in that makes it behave like fat32, even though it is really ext4. https://github.com/cgjones/android-system-core/blob/master/sdcard/sdcard.c I think that includes all the folders that are exposed when you connect to your computer with MTP.
You should be able to store large files in directories that are not handled by the fat-emulating stuff without any issue. So "adb push /big/ass/file /data/local/tmp/bigass.file" will probably work.
