Ubuntu for 'Z' - Xperia Z General

There are several cooked ubuntus lying around for most of the devices..I wonder why developers have not started its development.
Please checkout ubuntu s website.
Its cooler than android in a lot of ways except one vital thing which all phones need thats play store..
Sent from my C6602 using xda app-developers app

you'll never get the play store because nothing on there would run anyway on ubuntu. for someone who's begging for ubuntu support, you sure don't seem to know anything about it.

I ve ubuntu tv and my lap at home is on ubuntu..so I aint a newbie , my fellow..and u can say that until u know somthn about ubuntu..when u know what ubuntu really means for phone, you will want it..

Ubuntu is built from cm10.1 and there's even a pretty comprehensive guid on building Ubuntu on the wiki. Also I know that KA is working on it but I don't know how far he is. I'm sure he'll tell us if he makes any significant progress

Ubuntu for phone is still in Alpha. Doesn't make sense to port that to the Xperia Z just yet. I wouldn't mind a port though, as that would mean that we would have a working version for our phone when Ubuntu for phone goes RC. That being said, I am sure someone will release it for the Z sooner or later; probably being developed as we speak.

Xperia Arc & Neo ICS Updates released today

Just found this and wanted to share.
Arc & Neo ICS updates out today.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/05/2...eo-android-4-0-ics-updates-start-rolling-out/
On a side note I thought I read somewhere that the Arc is a common ROM to be ported to Xperia PLAY.....this true?
Anyway just sharing.
Yes, it is true.
Sent from my R800x using XDA
Wohoo, this sounds promising, it sounds like my first try to port a ROM ever here, since I really want a ICS-ROM for Xperia Play, but only if the android version is 4.0.4 then, otherwise, it will not get better And after that I will try to get everything to work as well
it seems that the latest Xperia Pro ICS firmware has been leaked!
The sony devs better pray that it runs like crap on our phones because I cant imagine them looking worse than they do right now
If devs port this rom to the Play, get TouchPads working with all the touchpad games and I'll retract every ICS is bad for the Play comment I've made recently

Which is.... pretty much impossible. The dev's need to update the games.

But we'll need a kernel won't we?

If it wasn't for the custom roms, I would feel like crap for buying this phone (Xperia Play). At least, there are some decent roms out there.
Anyway, it is a shame that Sony hasn't released, at least, the sources, or have they?

ICS is great for us who pretty much just use the pad for emulators. Emulators work fine in ICS, and you get all the niceties (sadly the rotation animation is way up there on my list).
I could care less if Sony released an update or not, I'm still able to get a damn fine ICS experience with the aokp rom.

Ubuntu Phone OS on N7000

Hey folks, I'm keen to start work porting the gnexus image for Ubuntu to the N7000 when it's released later this week. Is anyone else keen to join this effort?
While very familiar with the linux commandline, servers, desktop linux, and flashing my phone, I haven't compiled much code before and am unsure where to start. I would appreciate any advice you might have.
Looking forward to getting this os running on our original notes.

Deleted sorry wrong post.
I would love to see some support here. Push!
I'm presuming you're going to need to build an unbuntu compatible kernel for the note, mobile devices don't tend to work in the same way as desktops, so the pretty much universal kernel model used on the desktops don't work too well here. (size being the major consideration).
Not really looked into what they are doing, I'm presuming they will release source under gpl, so at least you will be able to diff a standard gnex build and the ubuntu. You can then use that as a basis to rebuild for the note.
"Porting" an image if that's all they release is going to end up quite messy.
EDIT according to techradar they will release source http://www.techradar.com/news/softw...galaxy-nexus-nexus-4-coming-next-week-1131567
But doesn't it run on android kernel without any modifications?

You think every android phone runs on the same kernel? Think again.
It's always a possible that they will use an Android kernel for the gnexus or n4 builds, but it's unlikely, as Android has some features that don't play too nicely with a mainstream Linux build.
Not seen this yet, nor code for it, so can't say exactly what they are doing yet.

See what happens when it comes out then, but would seem from the information Canonical is presenting that they are using standard android kernels. Will be interesting to see.

Yes, but what he say is that Ubuntu runs from Android Kernel. The CyanogenMod 10.1 kernel. And as we have CM 10.1 on note, the kernel is not a problem
Yep, definitely looks doable now. Love cyanogenmod and ubuntu.

But count me in for beta! Would be pretty awesome seeing Ubuntu 4 Phones on our beloved GNote!

Well, one step at a time. First get it to work, then dual boot is the next step.
Finally, it might be possible to run them "together", for example running CM apps in Ubuntu Touch.
I mean by transforming the base Android system into a fully-fledged CM and connect it up to Ubuntu.
Not sure that is feasible yet, but there might be a chance. And it is sure a while down the road.

Really disappointed that it's only a "skin" on top of CM10.1, proper ubuntu is what we need, to actually run linux apps but still, every advancement is positive but I'm not interested in another android port, I like jelly bean as it is, AOSP ftw.

It's not running on top of CM10.1 is running on top of the CM10.1 kernel (and some drivers for the hardware) and I wouldn't say it's fair to call that a "skin". That's like calling every linux distro a linux skin.
true, my frasing is wrong but it doesn't change the fact that it's not capable of running linux apps, it's just another take on android, and on a tablet such as this I'd love to be able to dual-boot into android/linux, let's see where archlinux will take us but with the way things are changing and people upgrading to newer devices this will be left behind as well eventually, and to think that since the first quad core device a year ago today we call the tegra 3 a low-powered chipset compared to the powerhouses coming out, and people still don't have a quad core cpu at their home pcs and laptops, anyway, offtopic, let's see...
as far as I heard from many different people now it is just something to show the skin as main features like wallpaper, rotation and others aren't working yet although they should... Basically I would prefer a dualboot solution with stock ubuntu and android, but just my personal opinion...

My first build I scrapped. I will be redoing my build after I port one more ics rom for us on cdma and gsm I had on my first build the sd card mounting. So we could us that, j edited the buildprop for our xperia plays I did thave the phone libs connectiing because the error messege "process.acore.android.phone" has stopped working but I was using stock 2.3.4 cdma I'm rebaseing and using libs from either a cm7 rom or ftom the cm7 miui rom since the kernel that boots cm7 miui also boots android 3.0 honeycomb sdk build I'm porting over so I will have a test upload awhile later tonight with the Required kernel wifi bluetooth and data will not be working but I will have the gamepads working for games like sonic the hedgehog. And off road legends (side scrolling games sonic laggs a lot just so you guys know)
