Hi guys had my N4 couple of weeks now loving it possible best phone I've used. Now I've done a bit of rooting over the years had some success and failures but stock JB is pretty much spot but I want to tweak the screen and only way is by rooting so I believe. If I root will I have to do full reinstall of apps and settings which I want to avoid because apart from the screen calibration its just how I want it all works and battery is on par with my galaxy nexus and my 4s so cant complain. What's best way to go?

Huh...big dilemma, I also wouldn't know what to do!

For apps you can backup via adb or using a toot kit, any other files backup to PC or cloud, for calls and texts you can back them up via apps from market. Settings you can always re set your phone.
You'd need to unlock the boot loader so will completely wipe your phone.
Do it, once rooted its simple to restore everything back.

Once rooted running stock is there any know glitches?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Not really, you gain the benefit of root. Plenty of kernels out there with changed colours.
Root your phone. The benefits of rooting and flashing a ROM from one of these great devs outweighs by far the possible glitches. You can add toggles to the quick toggle menu and resize the nav bar, or get rid of the nav bar and use pie for navigating. I could go on all day. If you do run into problems you can always flash the stock firmware, this is why I buy Nexus phones.

Root or not to Root

I use Nova Launcher and I am able to have full screen home screens, which is great. I'd like to be able to hide the status bar in other applications such as Kindle. Is there a method, or an app.?
Don't be a wimp. Just root. It's worth it in so many ways. GMD gesture control lets you hide status bar on the fly from any screen. Just swipe with 4 fingers and it's gone. Same to bring it back.

I would, but what about my warranty? I'm not wealthy enough to buy a new one if something goes wrong (my N7 is a first batch one). I would love to do it though, I'm itching to.

It will, but you can easily take off the root. =
I used mskip's toolkit. Just follow the instructions, and you will be fine.

You won't mess anything up dude. Don't be worried. It's so easy to do and easy to fix if you mess up (which you won't). And its totally worth it I promise!

Hi folx.
I got this phone today.
So i have few questions about it. All questions consider rooting phone, but not putting custom rom
1. Is Light Manager working on this phone or we are doomed to use Light flow?
2. Can i put some shortcuts to unlocking circle?
3. How can i remove google search bar on stock launcher?
4. Can i add some more shortucts to switches menu in notification bar?
5. Can i change color on softbuttons?
If i remember something more, i will write it here
Thanks i advance

Hi,
1) Light Manager works perfectly, I use it.
2) Custom rom.
3) Not possible if I remember right, need to use an alternative launcher like Nova / Apex or a moded stock launcher.
4) Custom rom or maybe with an existing mod (I doubt)?
5) Custom rom or take a look here but here the colors are limited.
Mainly what you are asking is in almost all the custom roms...
Thanks a lot for response!
Tell me, is it possible to add wather widget on lockscreen as widget?
Thanks in advance

Check out dash clock widget. If that's not what you're looking for and want full size widgets then try a custom ROM.

Many custom ROMs have a feature that allows you to put any widget on the lockscreen.
It looks like you need to start flashing!
Ahhh.. I wanted to use stock for few weeks.. Ive heard that there is one kernel that is working best with stock rom and makes battery life much more better.
P.s. can i recieve ota if i am rooted?
P.p.s. does build number affect ota updates (like on galaxy nexus)?

Ive been searching these forums for about a month about the s4 which I now own. I used to have a samsung infuse and was very active on the xda infuse forums. When rooting that phone infuse users lost a lot of features like mhl hdmi, hi res cam etc. With rooting the s4 what is lost? From what I can find it seems like only the air gesture features are lost. What else is lost and is it that way on all the roms. I want to root this device but not if I lose things like bluetooth or cam. I maybe can deal with no air gesture things. Thanks in advance. Sorry if this is answered I have tried to find as much info as possible before posting here.

If you stick with stuff in the Android dev (stock based ROMs with TW) section and not the Original dev, you won't loose anything. Just pick one that keeps that stuff, or has a flashable add on for it. Some remove it to keep the ROM lite if the dev feels not many use the feature.

Hey N4 users, how many of you are satisfied with stock 4.3?
I used to flash ROMs but I typically just stay on stock 4.3 now. I use a quick settings mod to add more tiles and an extended power menu mod to get reboot options. Other than that stock is all I need.

:good:
Flashed many roms ,tried about 6-7 roms and I realized that stock is good enough for me. I'm using battery % mod + advanced reboot ,it's enough.
I really enjoy with 4.3 stock rom.
Never was.

Honestly, not a fan of the Nav bars, so no Stock for me. I feel that they take up more space than they should. I ♥ extra screen space.

I use an app called fullscreen, and stock rom is fine after a few personalisation tweaks (playing with MUIU theme icons currently). Oh yeah..Pie Control App, Power Toggles, etc...apps really can extend usefulness like roms do, just have to hunt for them.
I need the long press navbar action, and better toggles.
Instead of flashing different mod a custom Rom is much easier.
Not for me. I like the extras, changes under the hood, ect the custom ROMs bring.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes. I've run stock on my phones since the Galaxy Nexus was released. I don't have the desire to do the custom ROM song and dance when stock does everything I want it to do.

I'm very satisfied with stock! The only issue is I wish with the default launcher you could change the pages, that's my only complaint... I wish I didn't have to use apex on top of default...

Generally speaking I would say yes, stock is great, but there are aspects to using something like Paranoid Android (lubz me some PIE) as well as CyanogenMod (volume rockers to change songs is something I simply cannot live without these days), so generally I will use a device for a period of time when it's new to my ownership stock, then do the research and find a custom ROM to try out, then another if needed, then tweaks (custom kernels, undervolting, etc).
Same old same old as everyone else for the most part I suppose.
i had mine for 9 months before i decided to try a custom ROM...
The nexus 4 is the only android phone I've owned and kept as stock which is kind of ironic.

I completely agree. My previous phone was a SGS2 and I flashed a new ROM the day I got mine. My N4 however I have decided to keep stock since 4.3 was released and so far I have been pleased.

Custom ROMs are significantly and noticeably faster and more responsive. Besides on stock lte is broken...

after i unwrapped it, my phone was stock long enough to download a custom rom. kinda like when you first installed windows and you use IE long enough to download chrome or firefox. same idea
I'm on stock right now

On stock ROM now and while I do miss the volume rocker buttons and expanded lockscreen on custom roms, I am also happy without it.
I've been waiting for CM 10.2 Stable...so I guess that answers that.
Stock... No need for custom Roms anymore. Hell even the stock kernel is good now.

Did a quick search but couldn't find a definite answer, so does anyone know if the Xposed framework is compatible with stock rooted G2? It's the Sprint ZVA variant, deodexed. I'd really like to customize this phone a lot more but to be honest I'm really not too impressed with many of the custom roms because I've found a nagging bug in just about every rom I've tried. Stock seems to work best and provide solid battery life, call quality, etc so I'd prefer to stick with that, and customize the hell out of it.
Edit: tested, works great on stock with G2 Xposed. I am even able to install CM themes on stock with HK Theme Manager.

Thanks. I'm using stock 4.2.2 rooted. I just thought I'd ask before experimenting. I'm a bit leery of accidentally sending a phone into a boot loop that has a sealed in battery. (Though I hear volume up+ power will reset it, which is handy)
