A few problems with my Nexus 4, what to do? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I bought my Nexus 4 two days ago and I've been having a few issues with it. I still haven't flashed it yet so I have 2 weeks to return it to the store. It came with 4.2.2
Here are the problems I have :
- When playing music over bluetooth with my wireless headset there's stuttering every once in a while... some time the audio cuts for a good 1 or 2 seconds.
- When making calls (through the phone, not with a bluetooth device) the sound quality is bad. I don't know how to describe the problem but it's as if at higher volume, the little speaker vibrates and make an annoying noise.
-I turned all sounds/vibration off because I was using the phone in the bed while my girlfriend was sleeping next to me. Yet, some times, when I touch the screen to open a page I could hear a small "click" sound.
Now I'm quite sure the two last issues can be fixed by changing the phone for another Nexus 4. For bluetooth problems, I think it may be related to a bug in 4.2.2. (based on posts of Galaxy Nexus owners who said their bluetooth worked fine in 4.1 but they had similar problems to what I had in 4.2.x)
THe big question I'm asking myself is this one :
-Should I get another Nexus 4 or should I go for the Galaxy SIII ?
Edit : What makes me afraid of the Galaxy SIII are the physical buttons on the screen. I prefer the way the Nexus 4, no buttons, more space for the screen. The CPU and RAM seems better in the Nexus 4. Does it make a huge difference compared to the Galaxy SIII ? I had a Nexus S before and it was quite slow compared to my new N4... a point for the SIII is that there is LTE coverage in my area. Is it really worth it? I only have 1 gig of data anyway...

Just return it and get a replacement.

What kind of headset do you have? I have a JayBird Freedom headset and it would cut out with all of my phones that have Bluetooth 4.0. I have a plantronics set of ear buds that doesn't ever cut out. It might be worth trying a different headset. I think you would be happy with either phone, there is a ton of dev support for the gs3, plus lte. The quality of the nexus 4 is not as good as the gs3 in my opinion. But for the price and updates from google, the nexus 4 is better for me.

The headset is a Monoprice brand handset. (Cannot post link...)
It is bluetooth 3.0 and It works well with my Nexus S, my girlfriend's iPhone, and 3 computers. I don't really want to get a new pair for the Nexus 4 only. For now I'm thinking of using my Nexus S as a MP3 player at work, hoping a future update will fix bluetooth.

[Q] Nexus 4 vs Nexus 7 as a phone

Hello everybody, I wanted to know your opinions. I am definitely getting one of these new Nexus devices but I don't know if I should get the Nexus 4 or Nexus 7 as my phone. I have listed the pros between the two below.
Nexus 4:
It's designed to be a phone
it's portable
Higher Pixel Density
Back Camera
Nexus 7:
More screen real estate (I use my phone a lot but 4.3" on my old phone doesn't cut it)
Much larger battery
So which device would you guys go with?
The Nexus 7 is a tablet. It has no phone capabilities. You will not be able to make calls or send/receive texts. By the way the Nexus 4 has a 4.7" screen, not 4.3"
why not the nexus 10 with a bluetooth headset??

i used the last over wifi as a phone... a lot, in fact it's been my sole device since it came out... the speaker isn't good enough even with all the fine tuning you can do. I can turn it way down, adjust gain, speaker... etc etc etc but everyone complains of an echo. If you do a bluetooth headset though or headphones or whatever and you aren't using it for many phone calls... then boom. since i have the 7 now though... i must get the 4... only seems logical

I heard that enabling the Phone and Messaging app on the device is possible as was possible on the original Galaxy Tab.
Neither. The Nexus 4 is too small. I'm waiting for a PlayStation Certified Nexus 5 mobile device with 4G capability.
Nexus 7 is too small a Nexus 8 with less bezel sounds good for me. Anything higer than that should be left to the Windows 8 hybrids.
If I really had a choice the Nexus 4..

I was wondering about same thing, N7 HSPA+ with google voice and bluetooth headphone sounds like a good option,

[Q] Nexus 4 from Note 2 question

Hi all,
Well, hope someone can give me their opinions here.
I have had a Samsung Galaxy note II for a couple of months now, but I am considering getting the Nexus 4 since I want stock Android and get access to the latest Android updates.
Also, the Note II has been a little big to me.
I heared somewhere that the microphone of the phone is not that good, is this really true?
How do you like the phone? Is this a good choice?
I know that some peole may chooce the Samsung for it's screen, but other than that?
Another thing is the built in battery on the Nexus 4 wich I don't like, but suppose one has to live with that.
Any comments please!
Many thanks!

I had a note 2 before the N4 came out. And for me the note 2 was just too big. I like being able to use the whole device with one hand.
That said. The mic on the N4 is fine when making voice calls. the problem I noticed is when recording video, or using apps like voxer walkie talkie or VOIP apps. Basically anything other than voice calls. I can't explain why, but it just sounds like your always way to close to the mic.
The ear piece has some fuzz sound on voice calls (unless they fixed it in newer revisions.).
I also feel like the signal is worse with this phone. What ever the logistics are it will often go from 3 bars to 1 bar without evening touching it, but doesn't seem to affect the use of it unless you're in a poor coverage area already then it will show no service much more often than my G nex or Note 2 did.
The note 2 has much better battery life because of size and I like that it is removable. I also really like the wireless charging on the Nexus. I miss SD slot on note.
All that said. I still prefer the nexus over the note 2 at this point.

I also had the Galaxy Note 2 and it is a great phone with very good batterylife. But what i like more is the pure android xperience without the touchwizz shell over it, the bleeding edge cpu and gpu and fast updates. Also i like the size and usabilty is better than on th GN2. And since 4.2.2 batterylife has improved a lot. I would recommend the Nexus 4 for daily use and speed and the Note 2 if you like using the S-pen features and appreciate the screen size.
Hi,
Many thanks for your replies!
That sounds good, I don't use the S-pen and it's OK with not using the big screen as the Note 2 has and as i said, want to get the new Anroid updates and I don't know if the Note 2 will be updated to v4.2. I don't like the touchwiz that much either so I can live without it.
How is the loud speaker on the phone then? Is it OK?
Some people have said that this is a downgrade from Note 2, but I don't think so.
Many thanks!
The speaker is okay to me, but I don't expect a lot from phone speakers. Definitely not as good as the note's though.

The Note II will probably be updated to 4.2.1/4.2.2 around Q2 2013 (so that is when the next v. of android will be announced.)

Nexus 7 FHD Speaker Test

Have you tried listening to it closely and making sure both of your speakers are working or not ?
This might be the culprit because my nexus suffers from it
You should go to a store and test the same video on a demo unit... Then you'll know if your device is OK or not

In mine, sound is coming out of both speakers, I just checked.
I bought a 16gb for my son 2 days ago and its the same. Why give some thing surround sound when the sound is not even loud enough?

Lol I don't get it too. My phones are louder! But it sounds good with headphones.
Thats really disappointing. Can you give us a reading with a db meter.
The best I will be able to do is a db test with a db test app from the play store. I'll post a video as soon as I can.
If this tablet was for me and not my 9 year old son, I would've returned it asap just because of how low the sound is. My mytouch 4g is way louder.
Decibal Test
Here I did a decibal test with the same song same player, comparing NOTE 2 to NEXUS 7:
Nexus 7 FHD:
http://youtu.be/JfE3nLaql4k
Note 2:
http://youtu.be/LT1kXC8yN1A
Note 2's average DB is higher by more than 10 DB.
Could somebody post a link to a dB tester? I can't find any that work with ICS in the Play Store.

I'm guessing you have a custom ROM and Kernel on your Note 2 as you are on XDA forum.
Do you have STweak installed? It be unfair to compare Galaxy Note 2 Modded Speaker to a Stock Nexus 7. Unless it's stock as well.
I just sold my Note 2 to buy this N7 2013, volume is comparable. Without having them side to side i would say they were the same volume wise. I have found the sound on this tab quite good.
Just watched your vid sitting by the fan in my window smoking a cigarette and had zero issue hearing the audio...

Can you do a DB test? My Note 2 is so much louder than the Nexus 7 that I don't even hear the Nexus 7 when both are playing at the same time. I would like to know if mine is defective. My HTC Magic and sony X10 are also louder.....
Both Note 2 and Nexus 7 are Clean roms.

tablet recommendations- Nexus 7 or Note 8

Hello Nexers!! I have an original Nexus 7 wifi and am looking into getting a new tablet and passing this one off to my daughter.
I am looking into the nexus lte (on tmo's free 200 mb) or the Note 8 wifi. They are pretty close in price. Any input you have on your nexus 7 2013 lte's would be much appreciated. I have a Samsung original Note so I am familiar with both OS. Thanks.

Well,
SCREEN
in one side, you have the note 8.0 which has a bigger screen (not only 1 inch more, it also does not have any soft keys) so you get a larger screen.. anyway, i PERSONALLY feel 7 inch is alright and the text looks sharper in the nexus 7.. because of these:
Note 8 has a resolution of 1280x800 in 8 inches, which leads to 189.000 Pixels packed into every inch.. its OK but it's not awesome.
Nexus 7 has a resolution of 1920x1200 in 7 inches, that's a total of 323.000 Pixels for every single inch, amazing for reading books, watching movies, reading magazines,etc..
---
GAMES & MULTITASKING
Note 8 has a quad-core 1.6GHZ Exynos processor, and a mali-400 GPU..
in my opinion, nexus 7 beats both
Nexus 7 processor is an underclocked snapdragon 600 or an overclocked s4 pro.. so it might be better than the quad 1.6 exynos processor.. the GPU adreno 320 of the nexus 7 makes the mali-400 look obsolete.
---
Nexus 7 has also gyroscope but that's not something really important..
Note 8 also some features not mentioned by me because i just dont think they are important, you can check them out here:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-7-2013,Samsung-Galaxy-Note-8.0/phones/8021,7677
not to mention nexus 7 have a much better UI which is Stock android vs Touchwiz. and as it is a nexus device you have a minimum of 18 months of full support from google which leads to having the latest version of android always.
well that's my opinion..
sorry for the bad english

if you need bluetooth + wifi working at the same time, then Nexus is not usable.
for every Nexus owner:
1. connect bluetooth mouse.
2. connect to WIFI (normal one, 2.4 GHz)
3. stream music via WIFI
4. try to move bluetooth mouse...
old problem since Nexus 4 which has also Qualcomm chips - never fixed.
My cousin has a galaxy tab 8.0, I have a nexus 7.
Reading pdfs on nexus 7 isn't that good due to it's small screen.
That's the only better thing with galaxy tab. Nexus 7 rules everywhere else.

I had the Note 8 and have the Nexus 7 2013. The Nexus is better in every way versus the Note 8 unless you need the S Pen. Biggest complaint I had with the Note 8 was the screen.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
For me I chose nexus 7
Note 8 pros:
1.bigger screen
2.pen (for drawing)
3.multiwindow
4.its a phone(better I guess)
Con's:
1.sluggish UI make it runs slower when used for a while
2.design not as beautiful as nexus 7(in my opinion)
3.TFT screen (obviously the IPS corning gorilla glass is better)
Nexus 7
Pros
1. Its a nexus-pure android experience which got updates faster than any non nexus devices)
2.awesome stereo loudspeaker
3.beautiful design(didn't mean to be bias lol)
4.better overall specs
Cons:
1.no multiwindows
2.some multi touch problems(which is already fixed by the new update)
Sorry if it feels like I'm bias because I just think that nexus7 have a very few bad points.
Since when google fixed touchscreen problem?
They think they did with 15R.
They made mine worse.

I wonder then, may it be some kind of manufacturing problem, a defect occurring for some models ?
Was missing what I might be missing, so picked up a Note 8, Went on sale at staples and got a 3rd tablet. Now I have 3- But lost Best Buy's receipt! Argghhhhhhh...... I answered my own question today. Went back to Best Buy with the original Note 8 with no receipt. It was a little confusing to the clerk. I had originally ordered it online. So the sticker on the box she said was my receipt, but the online order was cancelled and I rebought
the same tablet with a store receipt( which I lost) on my best buy credit card. Make a long story short, she reprinted a duplicate receipt, and made the return and credited it back to my card.
So, Now I still have the Nexus 7 lte, and a Note 8 from staples that I got for $309! That return period is over, so I will keep the Note 8, but still have till Jan 14 to return the Nexus 7(I have that receipt!). I think that one is going back.

anyone else having issues with the bundled headphones?

They were working fine until yesterday when the right one suddenly got very quiet and the only way to use them now is to move the balance to one spot before its only the right one and have the volume at full.
Also this is the first time I've had an issue with any bundled headphones as the ones for my sgs3 were fine until my cat decided they would make a great toy.
