edit the build.prop file change lcd density or get one of the many tool from the play store to do it for you
Aaaah, so the tablet and the phone software is one and the same thing then. Pretty cool.
And tried it , pretty cool, but wouldn't use it permanently like that...
Tablet ui look great.. so much space on screen ! but 320 dpi is to low im running with 340.. i cant use swiftkey in 320... my fingers r too big :<
I see that it is not really the tablet software, but rather the way android handles onscreen things when fooling around with the dpi, like the homescreen can also rotate now. Any idea to always have screen rotation, at the default dpi?
Proper dpi for TabletUI would be 240 - just like in the Xperia Tablet Z. This fully enables Tablet UI including the status bar (Much better if you are on a AOSP rom )

Is ther
a way to set the dpi per-app? I like hdpi (240) for my launcher and keyboard but nothing else. Can this be done or is Android not resolution independent like Mac OS?

It doesn't really work that way, sorry. The DPI set in build.prop is system-wide, it's up to the application developers to make their apps density (and screen size) independent.
I found that adw.ex has a dpi hack that makes it tablet friendly and smart keyboard pro has a setting for key size. These two apps accomplish what I was after.

What does DPI mean and what does it do? I've seen it thrown around quite a bit and would like to now what it is all about. Also, what's a good DPI number for a tablet UI instead of the phone UI? Someone said 160 but that makes the display all weird...

DPI stands for dots per inch. Changing the DPI in android doesn't change anything physically with the screen nor does it output at any different resolution. By telling android that your screen has a lower DPI, you are actually just making it think your screen size is bigger and 'tablet sized'. Therefore it will display the tablet interface. The DPI to get tablet interface will differ on each device but 160 on the Nexus 7 should do it.
Hope that helps!
I'm running aopk on my n7 and under ROM settings, nav bar, there is a option to customize it... putting 5 icons... but I really don't like the phone Ui... if I change the DPI to 160 I just can't see the extra buttons...
Someone has any ideas?
I saw a video on yt, a guy with a HP touchpad applying a cm7 theme made for the nook color..... can't find the video...
Thanks

As you know, the DPI on the Nexus 7 is 213, which is somewhat non-standard. This makes all the icons appear a bit blurry, especially noticeable on the phablet notification bar. I run mine on 240, which looks much better.
Have you ever noticed this, and does it bother you at all?
Paranoid Android @ 160dpi.
I honestly never noticed that as something odd, I just thought it was designed like that. App icons are a bit blurry, I have noticed that, but not all of them. Stock apps and some other too have very nice, crisp icons (Firefox for example, I won't check all of them)
I'm running stock ROM with stock DPI and I like it a lot. I don't care for tablet modes or anything, nexus 7 feels like a bigger version of phone android, which suits me a lot, since I use it in portrait mostly.

But 180 is also non-standard. The only standard DPIs are 160 and 240.

Within android on certain devices the different ui modes were triggered by the DPI changes. 320= phone 213= phablet and 160 was full tablet mode. Since Google has changed to the one mode to rule them all mentality I don't think it matters for much other then possible play store incompatibilities for the off standard DPI settings.

Well, the main thing is the icons. They were made with the standard DPIs in mind, and they just scale to match the others, which makes them look worse.

Yea that's true. I generally stick with 160 for everything. Even on my s3 I had it. It was a Lil small but manageable for me. I don't even see why some devices use 320 at all haha that should probably be an accessibility setting.

Sometimes I tend to think that I'm the only one happy with everything stock (just applied root)

Well, newer devices have extremely dense displays, so they have to up the dpi just to keep everything the same size.

I'd totally still be on Paranoid Android, but the hybrid settings no longer let me change the DPI higher than 213.

And 120 and 320. But yes, I find the DPI number odd. But I find no actual problem with it.

Mmmmm ..... I will try that 240 DPI value
Mine always runs at 160, I feel the default looks like a vision impaired mode. Galaxy Nexus is always set at 240.

I wish paranoid stuck with the cyanogenmod base instead of vanilla aosp as well. The ROM was much better in 4.1.2 with cm. The 4.2 aosp version just feels clunky and less stable. CM fixed a lot of this Google broke in 4.2 and there settings organization is much better than paranoids at the moment. Paranoid is missing a lot of settings as well too.

213 is actually tvdpi...lol.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
213 seems to be the magic number for nexus 7 flavour android, not tablet mode, but not phone mode either. 240 is phone DPI so the notification drawer fills the screen and there's no settings pull son on the right, it has then icon in the notification drawer or you can do the two finger pull down. Also on 240 you can't have multi-user as it thinks it is a phone and displays the appropriate lockscreen without the ability to change user.
I like 240 but the multi-user problem is a deal breaker.

Having been a flash'o'holic with my note 1 I really want to keep stock tw on the new note 3 for all the spen stuff. But I can't stand 340 dpi, is there going to be a way to switch this to at least 240 when we all finally get our notes? Or will it take awhile and involve custom sam apps to get this working? Failing that I fear I'll be rooting and flashing within the first month just hate everything blown up looking, this is the reason we buy big screen phones? For the extra screen space not a magnified look..
Chances are that many of the s-pen feature apps/functions will not work well with lower DPI... I'm just guessing from my experiences with both the GN1 AND GN2

This will be my first time purchasing a GN phone...so when you root it you will not be able to use the s pen features? It cannot be implemented into the ROM?

it can be in tw roms but not aosp roms. and he is saying that adjusting the dpi may mess with the s pen features since they are set up for stock standard sized tw

I understand what he was inquiring about...I just had a side question. Makes sense on both accounts...whether you mess with dpi on stock or not...could affect it.
thanks for answering

I forgot what xposed framework app it was, but after changing dpi to 240 or 270, you could set other stock apps (like clock, phone, s-planner, etc) back to the stock dpi for no impact.
Its called app settings i believe

Agreed, 240 dpi rules
I used 240 dpi on my note 2 as well and that was very nice and worked perfectly with the spen.
But 240 will be to small on a 1080p screen (I run my s4 at 360 which is pretty much the same look) I guess everything will work just perfectly like it did in the note 2 @ 240 dpi. Looks the same

Stock dpi for the N3 will be 480. You can bring it down to 320 and it will be the same effect of going from 320 to 240 on the N2
And changing the screen DPI shouldn't affect the S-Pen features. From what I've read, The overflow feature it has is based on a sensor on the phone and pressing the button on the S-Pen. Every other input the S-Pen has will work fine as well.

Just use Xposed App setting after installing Xposed Framework .
Im running certain apps on 360 dpi without any problems with S-Pen features. Although I do feel that 360 is a tad too small on certain apps but again you can customize it for each app.

I too have just come from a note 1 and done something that was probably silly.
I rooted my note 3 and changed the build.prop to 260dpi with rom toolbox but when it booted the system ui fc's and I can't get anywhere.
After failing to open any apps, I went to recovery and wiped data, rebooted and dpi change has remained.
Is there anyway I can revert or at least get it working without flashing another rom? If it's the rom, can the stock one be picked up from anywhere?
* edit *
Also, the reactivation lock is set back to on. Not sure how as I turned it off to root. Now I can't seem to flash a custom recovery due to that I think. Any ideas?

Dude, YOU'RE DOOMED! Lol.
Do you know if you activated debugging mode and have your PC authorised at all? If so, You could pull the build.prop, edit it put it back and keep your fingers crossed.

happy with 320 on my note3 using app settings/xposed..no problems with spen.
