Hey Guys,
I have had this idea for a while and just got around to making some concept renders of a tablet that the EVO would dock into.
This 10.1" tablet would work only when the EVO is docked in it (a la Atrix 4G). The tablet would utilize the camera, headphone jack and processor of the EVO 4G, while using the mini HDMI and USB ports to transmit data and images. There is an internal battery, front facing camera, volume rocker, mini HDMI, and mini USB port on the tablet to make using the device easier.
Advantages of a tablet dock:
-Less expensive (after phone is purchased) than a standalone tablet
-Real integration of phone and tablet (contacts, pictures, apps etc)
-Keeping bulk to one side reduces the torque on the wrist and makes the tablet seem lighter
-Using existing phone to power the tablet reduces the amount of internal components, reducing the thickness of the majority of the tablet
-Uses phone service instead of a separate data plan
Disadvantages:
-Dependant on phone specs (CPU, WiMAX, etc)
-Not compatible with other phones (although I think Google should standardize phone connections and locations)
I would love feedback and suggestions, and keep in mind this is a first gen concept. I will be updating this based on what people have to think.
I have created a sliding dock for my phone which holds the phone firmly in place and connects HDMI and USB in a sliding case (Sedio Innocase with HTC Media Dock modified to fit). This will be used in the prototype tablet.

I emailed it to HTC and Google but there are a lot of gaps still obviously.
I have no desire to make money off of this, just to get something like this in the market. Maybe a job would be nice haha
The only problem I see would be running honeycomb only when docked unless we plan on always running honeycomb

I'm not sure what the Atrix is, but were you thinking something like the phone in that motorola commercial where the guy is in custody at the airport, and trying to tell the cop that its a phone, AND a computer?
Now, if we can just get the batt issue fixed on our lovely evos; I'm wondering whats needed to power the lcd?

Yeah it would just be an extension of the phone, service and all. The atrix is that phone you mentioned with the laptop dock, but they use a custom linux operating system that boots when the phone is "docked". This could either just mirror the existing OS or could load honeycomb or some other operating system.
This is awesome and all. But again, how will touch inputs work? Has anyone attempted to get clone the screen, via HDMI, to a touchscreen panel and have it work both ways on inputs?
That all happens at the hardware level, PCB, etc., etc.
This is an excellent concept but unless the phone is built with being able to use an EXTERNAL touchscreen it's not going to work.

yeah exactly, just like the Atrix laptop dock.
There's definately room there for three flat batteries between the screen and the and case. If the can fit batteries in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the IPad 2, they can do it here.

that's the hardest part about this, and you're entirely right. We need some way of essentially splicing into the EVO 4G's digitizer and pretending that the tablet's touchscreen is the same. That, or we can emulate touch as a mouse (which is enabled on custom ROMS) and send signals via bluetooth, which would be very laggy and battery intensive.
I know that you can buy touch screen overlays for netbooks that enable touch over USB, so there is hope! Unfortunately, these usually are single touch and not very accurate, and they are another layer that needs to be applied to the screen.
I think that if HTC or any large company were to create a tablet like this, they would be able to integrate a solution with a phone the way the Atrix works. Hopefully this becomes a trend!

Thinking about getting the Atrix or bionic. I wanted to see how pleased people are with the dock? My plan is to use it as my work laptop. Most if my work is browser based, so my first concern is how does the browser compare to a laptop browser. I do know that it is based on firefox, but is it a full browser? Second is how do people handle printing. Thanks in advance.

I used the lapdock at work (I'm a sales consultant for bell), I did many projects and reports on it through google docs. Its ideal, good battery life but I hate the atrix. the keyboard wasn't the best but what its meant for 10/10

Curious, why do you hate the atrix?

If you can find the dock for $100 +/- I'd say give it a try. More than that, I'd recommend skipping it.

When docked the response is very laggy and the touchpad is especially sluggish. The firefox experience is prone to pauses and stutters as well. I haven't tried any of the hacks to see if it improves the experience.
Oh ... and AT&T requires a tethering plan to use the dock via 3G.

if you are rooted and running GB then you can use the lapdock without tethering pan like I do. I don't print from it so I can't say for sure about that. Lapdock is very thin and convenient and charges the phone while you are surfing. I use a small USB mouse (keychain) and leave the mini dongle in the USB port all the time. Works better than hotspot and laptop imho. You can also receive and send sms with the keyboard as well. I take Bluetooth calls while surfing and use apps like Netflix.....to me it's great. Not sure if you can print from USB mass storage though.

The touchpad can be adjusted in the settings so that it's not so slow..but otherwise invest in a Bluetooth mouse and you'll be good to go. I find the browsing to be very good actually..and considering most of the time I use it on 3g rather than wifi..it's still very fast (i've used sub $500 netbooks..and the browsing experience absolutely blows on them..unless you're used to Blackberry browsers )
I picked up an external hard drive and formated it to FAT32 and it works great..but I haven't tried a printer yet. I've got a e-printer that I use so no need for usb cables anymore anyways
The only time I really have noticed any lagginess is when i'm playing an emulator game full screen using my ps3 controller.
I think Atrix with Lapdock is really good. It can instead my pc to work with office software.
u can use openoffice for your daily office work.PPT/Word/Excel and so on.

I too think ths Atrix and Lapdock combination works great for most people that use their laptops for Web stuff primarily. But even office stuff works great, specially after hacking the webtop so one can run Linux apps like OppenOffice and GIMP for example.
I spent $300 dollars on it and don't regret it. I know that's as much as an entry level laptop or average NetBook, but I really think its thinness and huge battery life more than justifies carrying it instead of my heavy and bulky 15" laptop.

I too bought it for 300 dollars, but I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the into experience it awesome, our at least the thought of it. I can run remote desktop for pretty much any pro gram I need. On the other hand, the performance is not add great as you would think. If more ram were allocated to the webtop mode, I think it would be much snappier, along with increased clock speed. I'm going to try using the 1.3ghz kernel later this weekend and see how much faster the dock is.
All that said, I still use it as my daily laptop for classes, and it works fine.

I got mine refurb for $180. I think it was a good deal.
Pros:
1. Wifi printing is great if you have a networked printer.
2. Firefox is pretty good with good addon support.
3. File browser is easier to use than the one on the phone.
4. Hackability.
5. Keyboard is pretty good.
6. Battery life is AWESOME.
7. Built in Citrix Receiver. This is super awesome if you use this for any kind of work. It's easier to use my lapdock than my home PC w/VPN.
8. USB mass storage support.
9. Very light and sleek.
10. Geek factor- I get all kinds of questions from people, "What is that? I didn't know Motorola made laptops. Oh, cool!" etc.
Wishes:
1. Keyboard isn't backlit.
2. I wish it had a camera passthrough to a bezel-mounted webcam.
Cons:
1. Touchpad and touchpad buttons BLOW. Get a mouse (bluetooth or USB).
2. Slow sometimes. Use an OC kernel and that helps.
3. Can't install stuff without hacking.
4. Firefox is the only real "app" on the webtop (see #3).

Hate the Astrix because of the email issue we have with it. Find the screen not as responsive as other phones and moto blur is the worst Android over lay of them all

It really depends on what you want to do. I have the ubuntu hack installed, use Citrix to remote access office pc, and got Gnumeric running great to substitute Excel. I'd say it's functional enough to really do some light work on it. For anything serious, I'd be silly to use webtop instead of my core i5 laptop, but I'd bring Atrix+Lapdock to Starbucks for its coolness and geekness

What email issue would that be. I have a rather complicated email configuration that works well for me.
The Bell mobility Atrix had an issue where no email besides gmail was able to send mail. The Motorola blur was at times un responsive and it was easy to accidentally add your email twice and then not be able to send from either.
As for the speed post, the phone is just as fast as any other.
As for the part where I have no idea what I'm talking about? I sell hundreds of these devices every year, when a phone is crap, my customers come back with their problems! When you get to use whatever phone you want and have responsibility of advising people on which phone to sign a 3 year contract with, I might take your douche comment serious, but with that statement you obviously have no idea what you're talking about; don't bother reading my posts then buddy!

Hey guys, I am considering whether or not buying a KF. Honestly, it will not be used as a reader or used with any of Amazon's services. Rather I am buying it to have a solid piece of hardware that runs the Android operating system and hoping to see Kindle specific roms in the future (CM7 gives me hope). This will be a toy to use for media and occasionally on the go. Is it worth buying in hopes of future developing and tinkering?
Anyone have any input?
Just got mine yesterday and I would say yes it is worth the price tag for what you want to do. I rooted mine and put cm7 on it within minutes of opening it and haven't looked back.

What is the status of CM7 at this point? Is it fully functional?

I think the Kindle Fire is a great device for the cheap price.
I have my Kindle Fire for about 2 Weeks. At first i rooted the device and used Go Launcher Ex for a while, but I didn't like it. Then i decided to use CM7. It is very usable I think. There some problems with the MAC address and some forced closes sometimes.
Today i flashed the early Version of ICS from JackpotClavin. It is very smooth and with ICS the Kindle Fire feels like a Tablet. With CM7 the Kindle Fire feels like a big smartphone for me. ICS isn't finished yet and there are some problems with sdcard and forced closes.
If you can wait until the Custom Roms are more perfect I think the Kindle Fire is a good decision to buy.
I bought mine to use solely as a tablet. I installed cm7 as soon as it was avaliable and haven't looked back. i bought it without any intention if using any of amazon's services. it's a great tablet plus it fits in a pocket. dual core, so it can run 720p h264 very well. plus with the overclock it'll be even better. the only complaint i have is it doesn't have an sd card slot, so you only have like 8-10 gigs of space to put stuff on, but it's not a big problem for me. cm7 is very stable. I have no fc's that i can remember, video works, sound works, plus there's a cifs module compiled so you can even mount samba shares. definately worth it in my opinion.

I have put four of these on my network at home everyone always waiting for workstation time. Now more than enough browsers for everyone. They have been rock solid so far. Running CM7 rom on all of them.
Yes, it's the best tablet you can buy for 200 dollars. An iPad is not 2.5 times better than it. I honestly think if you know your way around adb it is a magical device, with endless possibilities. Buy one, you won't regret it.
Using splashtop and orb to stream, I haven't put the thing down. I never need to leave the couch. Best thing I ever bought for light browsing, massive media, and email. I'm always around wifi so the 5.5 gig memory constraint is not a problem. ymmv with what you intend to do with it.
Edit: Orb has a beta apk on their website if you don't want to buy. It works great on the fire, worth the money if you decide to buy since no memory card.

It's great value for money. I've put CM7 on mine and now it's a pretty nifty tablet. In any case, I couldn't use any of Amazon's services (apart from buying books) being outside the US.
I own a few other tablets and the only features I miss on the Fire are the lack of hardware volume controls and mic. Otherwise, the performance of the tab (with CM7) is great and the size is pretty convenient too. It definitely doesn't feel like a cheap tablet.

CM7 appears to not have functioning sound so I'm just gonna root it for now and wait until a fully functional ROM is released, shouldn't be long. ICS looks promising as well.
Read the "Standing on the shoulders of giants" CM7 thread. Sound and hardware acceleration are working just fine.

I'm looking to get my first Android tablet. I've always rooted and run custom firmware on my Android phones, so I need a "cheap" Android tablet with a healthy developer community and a lot of support.
My first thought was to go for the $250 Nook Tablet, spec for spec it's better than the Kindle Fire; but didn't an update come out for it recently that made rooting it near impossible or so highly difficult that it hasn't been done yet?
Then the $200 Kindle Fire came to mind, very popular tablet must mean a very healthy/active hacking/dev community right? But isn't it also locked down in such a way it can't be rooted or modified anymore? I need a working Android Market (Oh I'm sorry, I mean <sarcasm>Play Store</sarcasm>) and good custom ROM's including ICS.
Then I see a $189 Lenovo A1 Tablet at Best Buy with decent specs. It's running Android 2.3 which I'd normally prefer over Android 3.0/Honeycomb but now that ICS/Android 4.0 is out, I'd definately want to run that on my tablet.
So is ICS running very good/stable on any sub $300 Android tablet? I wonder when the $250 Tegra3 based tablet from Asus (or is it Acer...) comes out. Suggestions on which route to go?
I'm interested in this too. Are you not interested in going the used route though?

I have no issues with going used, in fact it could even be preferred. I can get a used Kindle Fire from the local Craigslist for $140-$160.
I can get a $250 Nook Tablet (not the new cheaper one) for about $195 on Craigslist.
I wonder what the status is of Android on the HP TouchPad's are, did they get Android 4.0/ICS running on it? The HW specs are quite good.
I am very happy with CM9 on my HP Touch pad..

Not to hijack this thread, I know I'm in a Kindle Fire forum, but what are the known issues with CM9 on the HP Touchpad? The HP Touchpads specs are superior to the Kindle Fire's (naturally considering the Touchpad is originally a $500 tablet), but CM9 on the Kindle Fire only has 3 known issues (HW Acceleration, 720p video and Bluetooth); Doesn't CM9 on the HP Touchpad have a lot more known issues "HD Video/codecs not working, Speaker farting noise when screen is off, Wifi hit or miss, Sound still has some major issues to be worked on, Camera doesn't work yet (therefore no skype and what not), Reboot to recovery hit or miss, No Mic"?

Personaly I am very pleased with KF for $200
I thing you would get a better Tablet for 350 $. Maybe the huwei Mediapad wich is pretty awsome.
But the Kindle had a very good dev community.
I dont like the Lenovo A1, of course the community is ok, but hardware is not so good as the fire one is. Take a look at the Display its awfull and the CPU is a single core.
I buy a used Fire in germany for about 190$ and they sell a new A1 for about 180$ here.

My only con with kf is connecting to wifi. I heard it was a kernel thing and it may also be my router. Hopefully it gets fixed with the new 3.0 kernel, if not I'm thinking of selling my kf. It's a good device, but it gets really annoying when I can't connect, makes it pointless

I never had a problem to connect to any wifi. Explain your issue.

i used to have the same problem i started using raven's kernal now no problems it actually will now connect to my home and work and switch between the 2 without doing anything. this may or maynot help but worth a try
I wouldn't recommend the fire unless you plan on using it as Amazon intended with prime. Most apps do not behave right on CM7 and the lack of volume controls make it even worse.

I'd hold out for the "Nexus Tablet" that is supposedly launching very soon. It's rumored to be like the Kindle Fire size-wise, run Tegra 3, and be $150!
I'm on cm9 from bl1nk thread and if one of my rooms in my house has a weak wifi signal I'll lose connection. I noticed in a few days of flashing a rom it gets worse and worse. I'm going to try another kernel like someone suggested, see if that helps

I actually rooted my Kindle fire on the newest 6.2.2 update (it did take me a little while cause it's the first time ive used a computer to root) and I even got ICS to work on it swimmingly... but i took it off because it's still in beta. As for the market every single app ive downloaded from there works too.

Disagree completely. I have had CM7 on two Kindles for months now with absolutely zero problems. If you experienced problems with "most apps" then I am guessing you had serious user errors, not CM or KF errors. Plus, having an onscreen volume slider with the Volume Control app works beautifully.

The TouchPad's version of CM9 took a few revisions for hardware acceleration for HD video content, but alpha 2 fixed that. I've been using the TouchPad's since alpha 0.5 as a daily driver. In all those revisions and ROMs I have never had the speaker issue you mention in android. Before CM9 I would get that occasionally in webOS. I have only had wifi issues with CM7, CM9 and webOS have had solid stable wifi. From what I understand its more about the router channel than anything else. Overlapping SSIDs on the same channel causes the issue, and changing the channel on the router usually fixes it. My sound is great. Now that HW accel works HD YouTube looks and sounds great. Hulu+ and Netflix look great and sound perfect. There is no camera support, and I think that's very low on the priority list. You can always switch to webOS for video chat. Note that you cannot remove webOS, you dual boot. That's part of the issue with reboot to recovery. You cannot boot directly into recovery. When you power up you get a boot menu, after 5 seconds android boots. But, from that menu you can select recovery or webOS. I use a delay of 1 second because its very rare for me to need to boot to recovery or webOS. I have never checked the mic, so I can't comment on that, again though, it will work in webOS. With the TP don't discount webOS. Its stable, snappy, elegant, and intuitive. I thought it was better than CM7. The only thing it lacks is apps. The browser is great, and supports flash.
On Black Friday I had a Kindle Fire in my cart on Amazon, hoping for a black Friday deal. I saw an ad for the TouchPad for $99, and after 30 seconds of research I knew I wanted that instead. I ended up getting one for $195 NIB. To me a tablet is mainly an internet device, and a web browsing device. The 10" vs 7" screen makes a world of difference. Its still just as portable, but that extra screen makes web browsing basically desktop class. The TouchPad also has the TouchStone, the inductive charger. I never have to mess with cables, and never see battery below 75% because after a few hours of use I put it on the charger. Those sold for $90 new, but you can get then $40 easy. Plus the HP case is really nice for $15 usually. To me is was a no brainer. But I'm someone that has been on xda for years, flashing a ROM every week. When my family ask what to get I always recommend the Kindle Fire over the nook, and over the TP. The Amazon app store alone tips the scales over any nook advantage. But, those are users that need the device to work out of box, and consistently, without any hacking. I would still bet on the Kindle Fire getting more support here.

ive got a Kindle Fire and for 200 bucks, you cant beat it. i rooted mine before the update, so i dont know how difficult it is to root on 6.2.2 (which i believe is the newest firmware), but i believe someone has gotten it done

Right lol...If your intention is rooting and using cm, buying a first gen android tablet for about the same price makes much more sense. It is something with the aspect ratio, I had numerous apps not behave correctly when going from landscape to portrait, and the software volume control options on cm7 were hideous. The tablet is great if you intend on using it in conjunction with prime as amazon intended though.

I have two brand new Kindle Fires, but I recently purchased an Asus Transformer so I have no need for them. I was thinking about selling them for about $80 each, but I feel like it is too much work. (I hate selling stuff online)
If anyone could suggest some cool projects that I could do with them I would happily try it out, and even create a picture tutorial.
Both of them are rooted and running CM10 4.1
I have no idea what to start with. But try taking one if them apart and seeing what's in the inside and posting some pictures of it. Then maybe we could find something to do.
I wouldn't mind taking them apart, but that doesnt seem very useful. If I could some ideas first that would be great!

I was thinking about installing it in my car, but I already have an expansive after market radio.
I was thinking about making my own boom box and using a kindle fire as the player.
Root it and install JellyBean then go ahead and use it as a hardware mod

Build a dedicated boombox docking station. Loud speakers, integrated charging, additional storage, music videos and visualizers. It could be a great party and family room accessory.
Or a gaming station. Install several emulators and get a playstation or custom controller. Plus the entire app store. Old school gaming with Open Source possibilities.

Yeah a Car Dock was my first thought but you would indeed have to overcome the lack of GPS. Touchscreen Gmaps, Navigation, and Yelp would be sweet.
Although, there's no microphone on the KF - so no voice activation. Maybe it would be better to leave that to you're phone and leave the KF at home.

I would most definitely put the device to good use for the community here. I need a device to test Factory Cables on, so I can make sure they work beyond just the standard meter test.

That would be a novel idea. If you decide to make one, here's a link for audio equalizer apps. I looked for some graphic apps, but I couldn't find any. I think that it would look cool to have some graphics but maybe just an EQ is what you want. Either way, hope it works out for you!

P.S. 5-8 gigs isn't a whole lot of room for a boom box. You probably should have Stickmount installed for OTG support.
if you dont end up giving one away, they would be pretty cool as headrest monitors. Port out the headphone jack so passengers could watch whatever they wanted individually, or use DLNA to watch whatever off a carpc. I've currently got my kindle droid attached to the drivers sun visor and plan build a dock for it there if I end up liking it there. A full on computer will go into the dash, and I may end up putting several more tablets in the truck as well.
