[Q] Black Screen in the morning... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy all!!
I'm currently running Franco Kernel r111 and the latest CM10.1 Nightly (20130327), and twice now I've woken up and my screen is black and won't turn on. The LED at the bottom is flashing a notification, but I can't wake the device. I have to hold the power button and then turn the device back on. The issue is, that I use this as my alarm clock, so it's made me late a few times now...
Is this the "SOD" that everyone is talking about? I think it's related to this most current nightly, as I've used r111 of Franco's Kernel along with the 23rd and 24th CM10.1 nightly and I didn't see the problem.
I guess my question is, is there something I can do to tell what is causing the crash? It's plugged into the charger, so could I run some app that will take a log that I can check the next morning if it should freeze?

Maybe you have undervolted too much, how much did you UV?. Try raising the voltage and see if that helps.

I don't undervolt anymore on top of what Franco does by default.

Frano default is stock voltages, it is noy UV`d. Then maybe there is an installed app or widget that is going crazy and causes fc`s.

That's why I was hoping someone knew of an app that might log things, so I can check after the reboot.

So, I assume I would do these steps:
1. When I wake up and notice that the device is "frozen", hold the power button to turn it off.
2. Boot the device into fastboot mode
3. Use ADB to pull the logcat
4. Reboot the phone normally
Forgive me, but I haven't used ADB to get a logcat, and I believe that if I do it after a reboot into the full OS, won't the new boot overwrite the logcat from the frozen state?

Sounds like the "SOD" issue many of us have. It's cause is currently unknown although turning WiFi off may prevent this from happening.

Ok, this is good to know... I've only JUST started to experience it in the most current CM10.1 nightlies... It happened to me once a while back with a CM10.1 nightly, but the update the next day fixed it, and never showed up again until recently.

same here!
Hey all! havin same issues here! ;( Dont know why is it happenin, and most important, why it only happens sometimes.... :silly:
I attached a logcat to molesarecomming and he told me it is some kind of driver mess up I've done a full wipe and going totally stock with no luck, IDK what to do....
PD: I hav a thread here so if you can just take a look!

Why don't you open a ticket with Google support and send them the logcat?

No when its frozen plug it in the computer and type adb logcat in the cmd window. A cmd window should pop up with your logcat.

The 1026MHz slot is UV'd by default on Franco kernel. Though that won't have anything to do with the OP's problem.

This made me LOL so hard...
In other news its definitely some combination of CM nightlies & Franco kernel. I'm now on the newest nightly and r116, and it didn't happen this morning.
When it happens again I will try the adb logcat and see what I can figure out.

Ok... So! I am running Franco Kernel r117 & CM10.1 Nightly 20130403... I had the black screen again for the first time in a few days...
I plugged the phone into my computer, started the Nexus Toolkit, and followed the options to pull a logcat over to my computer. The problem is, the screen stayed at "Waiting for Phone" for almost 15 minutes, and then I had to leave for work...
Any help here?

I beleive my phone is bricked... i flashed eugenes vibrant7, it kept freezing up like a minute after i booted it up. I figured is what something wrong with the rom..so i flashed my nan restore of vibrant6 and it worked for about an hour, then it started doing the same thing.. they i did a nan restore i had of my stock rom, and now it wont get past the vibrant loading page.. What should i do?
EDIT: I cannot get into download mode... help please
Use odin and flash back to stock, and make sure you follow directions carefully!
search for [ROM] OFFICIAL T-Mo Vibrant JFD ODIN/Nandroid Backup Images 7/29/10 (Tested/Working) in the developement thread
Alright, ill check it out
It will not let me get into download mode..
turn off your phone, plug in charger wait for the battery indicator, hold volume up and volume down then press and hold power, wait for the screen to turn black and then release power button
I'm having the same exact problem, vibrant7 freezes after a while, tried to go back to the nandroid backup image 7/29/10 thread but it's not booting past the vibrant screen.
I can always go back to vibrant7 but i would like to go back to the nandroid backup
EDIT: I think the freezing problem is becuase of the overclocking kernel. i installed setcpu and left it a 1000 and so far it's working great(about 3 hours using it), i will update if still freezes later on today.

Have you applied the lag fix on vibrant 7?
PS. Mine still working like a charm.
Lag FIX Commands for ADB
adb shell
su
mv /system/bin/userinit.sh /system/bin/used
reboot
Follow install commads
busybox dd if=/dev/zero of=/data/dataimg bs=1024 count=1048576
busybox mknod /dev/loop0 b 7 0
busybox losetup /dev/loop0 /data/dataimg
busybox mkfs.ext2 /dev/loop0
mkdir /data/data1
& then once everything is done..
mv /system/bin/used /system/bin/userinit.sh
reboot
The reason why the phone freezes on the vibrant screen is because vibrant7 uses a different kernel. this makes the nandroid backups useless, unless you go back to the stock kernel.
I used Odin to flash stock firmware. Then I installed Vibrant7 followed by lag fix via oclf.apk. Haven't had any problems.

Yikes I just read in Eugene's thread that some CPUs cannot handle the OC. He posted a .zip with the stock kernel that you can flash via clockword mod. I think I'm going to go ahead and do it.
As for Google maps, I have noticed that if I open it with GPS turned off then turn GPS on the phone completely hangs and I have to pull my battery. Though this has been happening since I got the phone, with or without custom roms.

[THEME] B136/B160 Gingerbread/sense style w/ 1% circular battery

I take no responsibility for any harm that comes to your phone as a result of applying this mod.
I'm not really into doing themes but some people have been asking for this and I realised I could do it pretty easily.
Requirements:
- Should be fine for all B136/B160 roms. Please post your results.
Download:
Available Here
Undo package will be available soon
Notes:
- As stated I'm not really that into doing themes, so there may be some errors or places where it looks weird. One error I'm aware of is that if you add a number using the dialer it will show the 11% battery discharge icon next to create new contact. I can't really be bothered fixing this for now as it requires some messing around in the XML.
Screenshots attached, login to view.

Sorry I thought everyone was used to recovery by now! Copy Ginger.zip to your sdcard, boot to recovery then choose install zip from sdcard. Select Ginger.zip and install and you're done.
Is anyone experiencing battery drain? My battery died in about 8 hours yesterday, could be a result of an app or my kernel though..

No battery drain here pal, same as normal
Seems I had my wifi policy set to never sleep for some reason. All good, don't worry. I didn't think it was possible for the framework change to cause the battery drain but thought I would check just in case.
im not sure right now, but i think i tried to install from perfect recovery and got an error that it failed, that's why i just replaced it manually.
It works on B137 FLB rom?
I think I found a bug. 11% battery icon has appeared beside the "Create new contact" button.

Yep, i had that problem too. Wasnt sure before if it was the theme but guess it is since you have it as well.
IMO this is a REALLY NICE theme, installed it on manufacturer's B160. Now after I upgraded to B162 and installed this it keeps crashing several processes continuously. Is it only on my phone (guess not)?? Would it be possible to fix this for B162 too! Can't wait that!
Nope, I had the same problem...and same thing applies for B138.
How can I remove this theme?
Thanks, I will try
Great!
Thanks for this theme. Looks great! I installed it on Stockwell's B160 ROM. Didn't have any issues with it so far, but I'll post back here when I do.

Completely stuck, definitely need help at this point

Ok, so I've looked through various threads today and cant seem to get a fix.
First, heres the symptoms- N4 (4.2.1) has massive battery loss/ something running in the background killing it (battery page says Android OS). I killed all the background apps and everything else it would let me kill and it still will not charge (tried different plugs, cables, outlets, etc). I've had it plugged in for the past 6 hours and I'm finally up to 9%.
The phone has been rooted, and I'm trying to flash it and return it to stock, but thats when I ran into problem 2. It won't recognize that it is plugged into a computer (running on a Mac, but tried XP machine, Win7 machine, and again different cords).
From here, I don't know where to go. I'm new to this Android ball game so I don't have a ton of background here, so hopefully I missed something simple.
PS by massive battery loss- I fully charged the phone last night, then went to class today with wifi/blue/gps off and always have 5 bars of AT&T here and after 1 Hr, I had 35% battery left with Android OS consuming almost all of it.
definitely pickup gsam battery monitor and better battery stats to monitor the battery usage. gsam might be able to tell you what app is causing the battery drain. bbs is more technical but might tell you more about what is going on. Make sure your maps app is not reporting your location.

Thanks for the response. Downloaded it and the usage is 1%, so now I think its something more than that. Either hardware or some weird glitch??
It won't charge and isn't recognized by any computer?
I'd call it a hardware fault to be honest.
Try to get a stock rom on the device, re flash it and RMA it.

Just let it die and RMA it anyways. They arent gonna bother to Charge it, then "look to see if you Rom'd it".

For future reference MTP doesn't work with Win XP, and you need a separate app for it to work on a Mac. Should be recognized on the Win 7 PC though.

That means you currently have the stock recovery installed. First unlock the bootloader again with the Bootlock app. Then download Rom Manger from the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager . open it up and select flash clockworkmod recovery. When its done re-lock your boot loader again with bootlock. Then boot back into recovery manually (or even easier, open rom manager again and push reboot into recovery) and proceed to flash the stock rom & recovery files. (Don't forget to wipe first)

[Q] bricked N7 after cyanogenmod update

So I have a rooted Nexus 7. For the longest time I had a late 2012 build of Cyanogenmod that was working great. I decided recently to update CM, and that update caused programs to crash, etc. So I decided, in my infinite wisdom, to try flashing it back to an earlier CM7 build, and now it wont even fully boot. It either gets stuck on the Google screen, or the CM7 splash. I have tried all the windows apps for flashing it back to stock, but they all require USB debugging to be on. I dont know what to do. I just want it back to stock.
Any help is appreciated.

Well you believe wrong. That term is a made up term by n00bs for n00bs. Your device is either "bricked" or "isnt bricked". The phrase "soft-bricked" is nonsensical.
Just because a device doesnt boot to system it doesnt mean device is any sort of bricked.
