Hi, i want to buy nexus 4, but i'm worried about temperature. I'll install custom kernel. Could you tell me what are the temperatures when gaming on - for example- franco kernel? How long can i play before it reaches 60 celsius? Is it overheating with franco kernel or it has stable 40-50 celsius maximum when gaming?

The N4 has thermal safeguards protecting it from damage. Realy intensive gaming shouldn`t be a problem for a certain time, if you play too long thermal throtling kicks in and you may xperience some frame drops wich is normal. The heat will build up with any kernel and any phone when you play intensive games for a longer time as the cpu is not fan cooled as in a pc.
I know. But i'm asking how long can i play ;D Because it will be disappointing when this phone will get for example 60 celsius in 1 hour when playing angry birds

This heat building will happen with any smartphone. You may better buy a Play station or Xbox for gaming and a feature phone for calls and texts (just kidding off course )
60C is normal. you will feel uncomfortable with a normal device?

battery temp no, cpu temp every single day when i push my device hard. when benchmarking a battery, a stress test, its supposed to get hot, thats the whole point. that isnt a real life situation.

Yes, my battery temperature is almost always at 30C or below. I played GTA Vice City once for about an hour, and the battery temperature went to as high as 40C. My phone was unplugged the whole time of course.
As for CPU temperature... It probably got to about 50C-60C when the battery was at 40C. Not sure though. Still not too hot to the touch, and not hot enough to trigger crazy thermal throttling.

I am getting bothered by the heat of my nexus 4 especially at the camera side..., when I play psx emulator it really gets hot and it gets hotter when it is charging... even if i am only watching or streaming the internet it gets noticeably hot, so i would like to know if this is ok or not.
what are apps that could monitor the temperature?
what is the normal temperature when gaming and idle?
I would like to know about this things so that if my unit is a lemon, i could return it to lg for the warranty.
thanks in advance.

you have a quad core device, its normal. when you stress the cpu, gaming, streaming, itll heat up. when you charge, your battery will heat up. the back o the phone is glass, so itll feel like it gets hot fast. when the device hits a certain cpu temperature, heat throttling kicks in. this will lower your cpu speed and cool down your device. when it goes over the cpu safety temperature(100C i believe), the cpu will shut down and the phone will power off. there are several apps that show the cpu and battery temperature. remember, battery temperature and cpu temperature are two completely different temperature readings.
System tuner gives you cpu temp. But you should get an app that tells you battery temp as well...

Intel CPUs (i5, i7, etc.) can survive going over 100 degree Celsius, but the commonly quoted safe temperature limit for long term operation is 70 degree Celsius. I would assume that the same holds true for other silicon chips, and find it difficult to believe that the shut off temperature for the Nexus 4 is 100 degree Celsius - you will be getting serious burns on your fingers by then.
Wait..., I recently played a 3d game and my temperature is reaching

Hello, I've had my nexus 4 for about a week and a halfish now and I've noticed that the phone is running pretty warm after even just light usage. I download a battery temperature reader and a CPU temperature measurer. At Idle the batter temperature is at about 33-36 degrees Celsuis. And the CPU temperature at Idle is usually in the lower 40's at idle. Are these Temperatures to high?
Also When I plays games or use any apps for a just a few minutes the battery Temperatures get at around 40 degress C and the CPU temp is usually around the 45-50 area. Again Are these temperature to high?
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me useful help on this issue I'm having with my phone.
Is this normal for a nexus 4?
Should I be concerned?
Should I get a new nexus 4?

I'm assuming your Nexus 4 is a newer one (rev. 11). Nexus 4s have been known to run quite hot. My rev. 10 is at 42 C coming out of sleep without use, earlier when I played Need for Speed, it got to 60 C. It seems to be normal for mine, although it does get uncomfortably hot.

completely normal. right smack in the middle of the range of normal. remember, human body temperature average is 37C or 98.6F. when you use your device, the temp will go up when you use a cpu intensive game, the temperature will get even hotter. this all also depends on the surrounding air temperature. the warmer it is around, the warmer the device will get or idle.
Normal. Because the back is made of glass, it absorbs the heat and you feel it more than other phones.

Hmm, That seems weird, if the phone throttles you at 37 degrees shouldn't my phone not be idling at that temperature, and the my front screen seems to get warm after slight usage to. And looking on other forums people with a stock nexus 4 said that there phone idles around mid twenties, not the lower-mid thirties.

But after 40C i think it s not normal and it s better to ask official service

Hmm okay I have pushed the phone and the highest CPU temp I reached was about 60ish. That sounds similar to the results that I have found on the web, people said that to get there battery temperature up to 40 degress they have to push the phone, mine gets there just by opening a few apps.
If you want to cool it down and you are happy with messing about with your phone, try undervolting the CPU. Although I tend not to check the temperature, my phone (UVd by around -150) feels far cooler; playing Real Racing it doesn't get as warm as simple browsing would on stock.

Couldn't agree more, The back of the phone I wouldn't say it HOT, but it is definitely very warm. But I'm not talking about how hot the phone feels. I'm trying to ask about the internal temperatures and if it's normal for it to heat up so fast.

the glass in the back of the phone is there to draw out the heat from the phone. its glass, and will feel warm. if you have problems with 40C, then i would recommend that you buy a dumb phone. my nexus 7, galaxy nexus, and nexus 4 all idle a bit warmer now than in winter. 40C is very normal.

overheating i doubt, what was the cpu and battery temperature? just because it feels warm, doesnt mean its overheated. when it actually overheats, first the cpu will lower in cpu speed(safety), then if that doesnt help itll shutdown. is the weather around you warm btw?
+1 @simms22
Also, if it's really getting to warm your phone would run unstable.

Thanks for your replay, I still don't understand why my mobile has started getting warmer more quickly ever since I've installed custom rom. I've hardly played any graphics intensive game on it so far.
I don't know from where to know cpu and battery temperature. Do I need to install any application from playstore? Weather around here is warm. On average 35-40 degree temperature.
My phone CPU reaches 70˚C and battery 50˚C when driving in my car, charing with gps on a this time of the year(hot as hell here as well).
Everything seems to be find, didn't even turn itself yet so I doubt theres anything to worry about.
My gf forgot her phone in the car stand in the sun for a few hours, when she came back it wouldn't turn on until it was cooler so you can be sure your phone can take care of itself.
Maybe your governor was changed when you flashed the ROM, depending on the governor (like performance) your cpu clock speed may be increased more often then with the original governor.
You can check your governor with apps like no-frills cpu or setcpu and check the temperatures with cpu z

its easier to use an app for battery and cpu temp. being 35-40C around you, id expect the phone to be warm most of the time. anyways, after installing a custom rom your device spends a lot of time syncing stuff. so itll be a little warmer than normal. after about a full battery cycle it should stop, and will be a little cooler. also, a reboot after several hours after a rom flash should help a little too.
Ok, thanks for your quick response.
Hi.
Question for Mahdi ROM users on the LG G2:
Coming from this thread, I'd like to know how Mahdi ROM's temperature is when you do intensive tasks, like playing games, running benchmarks etc. Does the device get hot? If possible, tell the temperature, what you were running, for how long, did the screen remain on etc.
Thanks.

Anytime you run an intensive game or the like your phone will get warm, no matter what phone it is. Benchmarks get warm too, however I find those to be useless.

Hot as in "it shouldn't be at this temperature at all while doing what it's doing".
So that means 39°C tops. That's a bit above human normal body temperature. Not bad.
If I remember well, playing Plants vs Zombies 2 gave me 47°C tops in GSAM Battery Monitor, without ever rebooting.
Thanks.
Compass.
yeah max I had was 50°C, but not very long.
I guess it can shoot up higher, but for usually when doing intensive stuff, its about 39. Not to bad.
was one build it was 42 also in rest. That wasn't to long though. pretty cool, new build and fixed haha
@Compass Linux - my device gets extremely hot on any aosp rom even on normal usage, like web browsing, texting, checking emails and reading certain articles on the web, the cpu temp ranges from 50*C-60*C at times even 70*C and it gets throttled down as i set my tmep trottle at 70*C.
battery temps range between 27*C to 43*C which is NOT normal so im no longer on any aosp roms. it scares me as for lithium batteries temps above 35*C is bad for its life. also none of these temps are good for the phone so now im on pardus hd 7.1 and my cpu temps are within the rage of 35-50*C and battery temps from 32-35 under the tasks which i mentioned earlier.

If it was bad for the CPU why would it come from the factory to start throttling at 75?
I think you're mixing your views of desktop CPUs on to SOCs.
SOC (system on a chip) are crested to be passively cooled.
For this phone 30~50 idle/light tasks and unto 75c underload is perfectly normal and safe.

Hi all,
Loving the Note 5, but not loving so much how warm it seems to get in my hand, even under light/normal loading. I would be very interested to see some figures from other forum members. To make the test more accurate, I would suggest the following sequence.
MEASUREMENT 1
Close all open apps
Screen brightness 50%
Connect to WiFi (bad cell coverage might raise temperature)
Open App that allows you to see CPU thermal
Let the temperature settle down to a stable marker
Post temperature in celsius (apparently some of the apps have faulty Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion)
MEASUREMENT 2
Close all open apps
screen brightness full
Connect to WiFi (bad cell coverage might raise temperature)
Open App that allows you to see CPU thermal in the background
[*} Use camera app to film in UHD for 1 minute
Multitask switch to CPU temperature app
Read the temperature it reads immediately
Post temperature in celsius
MEASUREMENT 2
Random measurement...
Just any moment when you're doing light/normal stuff
Open the app and read the value in celsius
For me, the results are as follows:
Measurement 1 never goes below 30 degrees.
Measurement 2 was 73 degrees.
Measurement 3 is typically High 30's to high 40's.
1. 32C
2. 70C (within 5 seconds was down to 54C and within 10 seconds down to 42C)
3. 43C

Good! Maybe I would buy it if i knew i get updates and if it was cheaper!
Anyone else care to chip in? I'm starting to believe the warm in hand feeling is much more pronounced when I'm out and about and using 4G intensely (Youtube + browsing + Spotify). Here at home on WiFi it never gets as warm.
Played Angry birds 2 and PPSSPP emulator(cpu internsive) i do think that the Note 5 throttles, just like G4 or any other phone but not because of the temp, but the Interactive govenor is bugged.
I played tekken 6 on ppsspp and it played 35-50 fps with a bit of lag here and there, change to performance govenor, SAME TEMP, 60fps smooth NO LAG whatsoever, it made AB2 also way smoother.
It's the govenor that might cause the problem, not throttling.
Have to bring this back up to see if anyone is getting cpu spikes.

I've actually exchange that phone for a new one. The new one has a more stable temperature reading and only gets that hot in testing applications. The new one is much better. I couldn't last a day on the old phone, and it lost about 25% while I slept for 5 hours the day before I exchanged it.
