[Q] GPS Battery Drain 35% / Hour -- Please Help - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having serious issues with my N4. It started yesterday when I felt my phone was really warm in my pocket and I pulled it out to see that Flixter had been using GPS for 7 hours. FC'd and uninstalled Flixter thinking it was a bad update or some bug. Last night my phone drained from about 85%-6% in about 2 hours with zero use. Rebooted the phone several times to try to help and still didn't work. Plugged it in last night, woke up this morning with 100% charge, and after my 40 minute commute I was down to 81% battery, pulled up battery details on the phone and it listed Maps as number 1.
I'm not sure what is going on here, but the phone is unusable right now. Check out my original post here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/42304/gps-battery-drain-locationmanagerservice
Need help.

I would start with clearing the data on maps and wiping the cache. You may have to factory reset.

I tried that as well. No luck. Doing a nandroid now before I wipe.

I'm having the same problem since yesterday. The application that drain my battery is "drmserver".

HD Widgets battery drain
There was an update of "HD Widgets" yesterday on my Nexus 4, and it was te cause. Try uninstall it if you have it.
A friend of mine got the same problem on his Galaxy Nexus and it was also "HD Widgets".
Good Luck!

This was definitely the problem. Thank you very much.

Phone randomly stops sleeping

My phone will randomly stop sleeping, this has happened pretty much since i've gotten it.
I will launch spare parts, running near 100%. Check partial wake lock, nope nothing. And nothing under any of the other menus in spare parts that would indicate it not sleeping. This will occur after a couple of days even after installing no apps, restarting does not fix, neither does pulling battery. It will just start happening and only way to fix is data reset / factory wipe until it happens again, but when it does start happening I might've not even be using it at the time.
Okay, i did actually finally fix it after months without factory reset, it appeared to be when 3g and Data-always enabled was ticked.

If this fixes my no sleep problem, I will name my first child after you.
I've been detailing the steps I've taken to resolve my no sleep issue on another forum, with the last action I took being a flash to factory ROM from huaweidevice.com, changing absolutely nothing on the phone for 24 hours, rebooting, and waiting another 24 hours. Without a reboot between charge/taking off charge, it would be 100% running. If I took it off charge and immediately rebooted, running would be more like 30% (ie: 'normal').
I'll give 'data-always' a go

Wooh, nah for example my running time is 8.7% and screen on is 6.1% so that is pretty good, thats over the course of about an hour

Okay im unsure now, was all fine yesterday, woke up at 7 to alarm, lost 2% overnight. then just put it under my bed but now that i've woken up i've lost 18% because it just stopped sleeping again. I didn't do anything except turn it on check battery, and turn it off. So back to being confused again
Still having this problem, for example. It was sleeping fine when I went to bed then at some point during the night just stopped.
Running 64.6% 10h
Screen on 10ish% 45 minutes
Highest item with partial wake lock in spare parts is like 5 minutes, no other indicators.
This is happening no matter which ROM i try.
Considering a stock ROM with exactly 0 changes still has sleep issues, its clearly a firmware "thing".
For me, it happens after being taken off charge.
For e.g. Last thing before bed I check my running time, and its somewhere around 35-40%. Plug into charger. Take off in the morning, goto work etc, check my run time and its 100% even without the phone being touched.
For the moment I just downloaded one of the "root only" reboot widgets from the Market. Its just part of my morning "get ready for work" routine to hit the reboot widget and reboot my phone.
Its a bit of a PITA but until new firmware is released I cant see a way around it.

Hey don't know if you've tested it further than that. But its much appreciated, that rebooting after charging does seem to work . But just wondering, if you know... does it only do it when charging via usb (computer) or AC or does it not matter?
I have exactly the same problem.
I also noticed that reboot helps, but only for a while. If i want my phone to go to sleep mode when the screen is off, i would have to reboot it few times a day... Turning WiFi/GPS/Auto-sync on/off does not have any affect on this.

As per your suggestion via email, I tried the Malaysian firmware.... It seemed that 'running' time was down alot, but battery life was still pretty average. That was doing nothing more than installing the Malaysian firmware and entering my Google account - no root, no launcher changes, etc.
The lack of Swype was a bit of a downer too
I gave it a whirl from 6:30am to around 5:00pm and 'running' was right down in the 10% range, but battery was still down to ~45% over that time in 'pure' stock form. DAMMIT!
Ah well. It was a good thought and hopefully it worked for you I'm back on roadhound + the OTA update as of about two hours ago.
I'm going to scour the SGS forums and see if anything there can be applied to the U8800 RE: battery life improvements.

Oh yeah sorry, try using something like juice defender to disable 3g when screen is off or something. 3g radio keeps it running, but it doesn't appear to be, this will stop the battery drains.
EDIT: That does work but its not ideal, turns out the u8800 and the u8800h use the exact same radio so im not sure now, don't know if there is any possible way to figure it out.

Oh no, this is just the case for the U8800H malaysian firmware seems normal for all U8800 firmware.
I'm not using u8800H firmware and i have this bug.
Hey guys.
This may not really be the thing you need but I was having similar problems and running 100% on without sleeping etc and came accross another forum where this was an issue (cant remember where)and as trivial as it sounds the solution for me was to go into settings/ applications/ manage applications and running applications and go down to media storage and clear the data. I do this now and then when I have this problem and it seems to help.... Maybe worth a try? It seems to be an issue with a particular media file. I also try to reboot my phone after every charge. Note that my phone is totally stock

Thanks for advice, but unfortunately this didn't help either. For some unknown reason, my running time is again 100% although the screen is off most of the time. In Partial wake usage, Android System is in the top of the list.
Oh, Android System partial wake lock seems to be a different issue, but maybe someone can help you out. Whats happening here is running = 100% yet there is no partial wake lock held. Quite unusual

Yes, it is confusing also because i have tried different ROM's with same result. I would have thought that all u8800 owners have the same problem.
same problem here...

Phone locks up at 5am each morning.

I've had a SII for a couple of weeks now (new user to android) and I have flashed it to Lightning Rom 1.5. But even before doing this and also afterwards the phone seems to crash/lockup at 5am on about 5-6 occasions.
Is there any program/app I can install to monitor what is kicking in at this time so that I can disable/uninstall it?
Thanks
What do you mean by crash exactly ? Reboot ? Freeze ?
What you could do is plug your phone to your computer before it crashes, and start adb logcat, wait for the crash, and then look at the log to see what caused the crash.
It is completely frozen. I get up at 6:15am and the phone has a blank screen, but I can press a button to activate the screen and the clock is stopped at 5:01am and you cannot do anything else except turn the phone off and back on.
Maybe its the rom? Have you checked its thread? Try flashing bacm to stock. See if problem occurs.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I checked the thread but doesn't appear to be anyone else with same issue. I might try the stock ROM to see if the problem persists. Although I sure it happened once on the firmware that came on the phone (KE2 I think it was).
scheduled backup?
I couldn't find any backups scheduled. So I wiped the phone last night and applied the Lightning 1.5 ROM again and it seems to have been fine this morning..no lockups.
Thanks for the advice.
I had a similar problem with my Nexus S. It went into a bootloop at around 5am... I'm not sure, but I used to think it might be that network operators refresh their networks at that time, and a buggy radio would crash.. This is not normal, if it does the same thing with stock return your phone for repair, especially if you use your phone as your alarm!

I'll keep that in mind if it happens again..cheers. Been OK this morning so shall see how it goes.
Its done it a few more times since I did a factory reset, always at 5:01am. After rebooting the phone and checking the battery stats it appears that 'Cell Standby' has used 52% of all battery consumption and the battery drained from 100% to 9% over 8 hours. The problem also occurs even if the phone is on charge over night.
So maybe it is a buggy radio? Gonna take it back to the store tomorrow to be looked at.

CacheUpdateService - Draining Battery

Hi,
The last couple days my battery had been draining quickly. After having it unplugged for 2 hours this morning, and only listening to music for about 30 min, noticed i was at 95% so looked at my wakelocks. The #1 wake lock is "CacheUpdateService" under google services. It has not allowed my phone to go into deep sleep once. See screen shot. Any help would be appreciated. Just 2 days ago battery was amazing.

Really hope you find a solution to this.
I just tried reflashing CleanRom 1.1, but it did not solve the problem. Granted it was a dirty flash. I'll try a clean flash when i get a chance.

Only thing I found was to toggle the "sync" off then on for the google accounts in the notification pull down on samsung phones. I did that and also cleared cache and dalvik. Problem went away. Give it a shot. I have seen in the past when something like gmail or calendar would hang on sync and a setting it to not sync then back on would fix it. If that doesn't work, I've also actually removed my google account and added it back (fixed another issue in the past). Good luck

Thanks for the info. I ended up doing a factory reset then reflashing cleanrom. Seems to have solved it. If it coms up again I'll give your tips a try.
I have awesome battery life. I disabled Google now and never looked back. Also disabled wifi location services. My second charge I got 43 hours off charger and 5 hours of on screen time and had 9% left. Check the battery review thread that's somewhere on these G2 forums for tips.
Had this issue on my G2. After much frustration, i ended up uninstalling google play services with titanium backup, then reinstalling them. To reinstall them, I uninstalled a google play app (google play music in my case) and reinstalled it. The play store then had me install google play services from there.
Sleeping like a baby since.
I have the same problem. Tried everything from factory reset to uninstalling Google Play Services, but no luck. Did anyone have any other solutions? My phone doesn't go to deep sleep ever.
I have been so impressed with the battery power during usage so I tried 2 nights in a row to let it sit and see how the battery was over night. Each morning shocked to see 15% gone in 8 hours. Granted I have seen worse in the past with GS3 but still I am listed as it was awake the whole time. And the listing under Gsam is cacheupdateservice. every google app is unchecked in account and my gmail account is set to sync off. My regular email account is set to sync but only on manual. I do have access my location on with wifi and mobile location checked. I'll try unchecked. Any other help is always appreciated. Thanks
I had/have the same issue. The phone will NEVER sleep. I went into task manager and force stopped and cleared cache on almost all apps. Went to manage apps and cleared all data and cache in google play services yesterday after noon. Perfect for a couple hours. No cacheupdate service listed in gsam. checked back a little later and there it was again. Not sure at all what I did to trigger again. I then did the same thing and let it sit over night. Lost only 4 percent in 7 hours. So far have changed wifi and mobile locations on the way to work to work, checked email and surfed the net. So far so good.
Has anybody made any head way on the cause of this. If I clear the cache and data for Google services and force stop I am good for as much as a day sometimes with none of these wakelocks. Then they are back. I have tried a bunch of stuff with no true fix yet. I uninstalled the updates and no wakelocks but I keep getting messages telling we it needs to be updated. Any in sight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I don't have a G2, but I have the exact same issue on my Moto X...I tried searching a lot for this issue and no one seems to have a good solution (wipe cache, dalvik etc has not helped me).
Ultimately what I have done is install this app (phone needs to be rooted), then select System Apps ->Google Play Services and disabled CacheUpdateService. I haven't seen any side effects of this yet, but I am not sure if there will be any....Can someone else who is rooted give it a shot too and see if things improve?

Crashes every morning since daylight savings time.

Edit: Seems this is a more widespread problem, looks like the consensus is that is has to do with Daylight Savings Time change & the wireless charging Orb. Some others with similar problem:

Hey guys. I have a 16GB Nexus 4 that is rooted (SuperSU 1.65), running CWM (6.0.3.6), stock radio, stock kernel, stock 4.3.
I installed the pre-released hangouts v2 that was extracted from the AOSP 4.4. It immediately started causing random apps to crash so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the original version of hangouts. Ever since then though, every morning when I take my phone off the charger (orb) whenever I try to open any google apps (gmail, settings, camera, etc) it will force close that app. Once I reboot the phone everything seems to be working fine until the next morning.
I have tried clearing the cache & dalvik but to no avail.
My last nandroid is from a few months ago so Id really like to have to reload that only as a last resort. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Try clearing the data of Google Services Framework. If that doesn't work, reflash your Gapps package.
thanks, I will give that a shot.
Mine started doing this but not rooted and didn't install any pre-release apks. The clock even crashes while on the charger when it tries to sound the morning alarm.
A reboot clears it for the day but its back every morning. I reset the phone but no change.

I got the same problem, i click on clear cache of Google Service Framework but nothing happens!
Can you reproduce your steps?
whelp, i was wrong. When I woke up this morning, checked my email and it crashed. So I tried to go into settings to clear the framework and the settings crashed too. So I rebooted and its fine again. Any other ideas?
Same problem
I was the one that started that thread on Reddit. I've done a factory reset from the settings menu, cleared the cache data and factory reset via fastboot menu and the issue is still occurring. Phone is completely bone stock, no root or anything.
For me it started Saturday 11/2. I have been using the charging orb just as everyone else. I tried using my wall charger last night and I didn't have an issue. Not sure why out of the blue this could be the cause. I will be trying my orb again tonight to see if it reoccurs.
Mine did not crash this morning, after clearing the google service framework yesterday.... now it might crash tomorrow.
here is my thought into the process... Are we all using the google alarm clock? and after the time change?
4.4 can't get here fast enough

The first time it happens to me i was using the timely app as alarm clock. And it occurred the same day i got the time change. After that i uninstall timely and start using de default clock app.
The same day i got the time change the chrome app was not working either, i had to change my time zone to fix it.
I dont use my phone as an alarm clock, I dont use daydream or anything like that.
Do we all use the orb to charge though? Is that something we all seem to have in common?

Wow, just went through the reddit thread. seems to be a much bigger issue that originally though.
I also edited the title to reflect the orb being the newly suspected cause of the problem - not hangouts as originally thought.
I also found a link to a google group through the reddit thread, so I posted in that to complete the triangle. LOL. Hopefully someone comes up with a solution.

Should also mention on here that my wifes charges her Nexus 4 wirelessly with an LG WCP-300. I charge with the Nexus orb. She does not have the problems.

It's not the orb charger. I've been getting the same issue, but I use the N4 cable charger. Timely alarm clock still goes off, but there's a FC message when I go to my phone. Reset fixes it for the day. UK based, CM10.2 M1 + latest goo.im gapps. Also, I have a weird issue where the screen keeps turning back on when I lock it. Just keeps the lock screen permanently on when I'm charging in the morning.

I dont think the problem is related to the orb or wireless charger. Two people just post about the problem and they are using wired charging.
Everybody had to change the time before the problem start (summer time, DTS, whatever)? i'm suspicious that android is not handling this changes.
Anybody knows if android has a log with the errors? Maybe we can found some tip.
has anyone had the problem and NOT charged overnight?
Its possible that this occus overnight because the DST change usually occurs at 2am so if the glitch happens at 2am most of us dont see it until we get up.
Im going to disable the automatic network time & automatic time zone settings tonight - see what happens tomorrow morning.

I like this idea, but for me, the issue started the morning before the daylight savings rollback.
I used my wired charger last night and didn't have the issue this AM, but will be trying my orb again tonight.

[Q] Random shut downs and battery drops. Battery problem?

I've been facing these problems for over a week now and it's extremely frustrating. I get these random shutdowns when I'm just opening an app or using my phone longer than a certain amount of time. The phone will have 100% charge in the morning then shuts down and if I try restarting the Google splash screen shows up and shuts down again. Then the battery level will be at 70% and the whole thing happens again till I have no charge.
So when 4.4 came out I thought I'd update and these problems will go away and they didn't. Now the same thing happens I've done a data wipe/factory reset, cleared cache but still nothing. I thought some apps were causing problems so I uninstalled everything but still no use. I'm currently on stock 4.4 using the stock kernel. I was also on stock 4.2.1 when these problems started. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
Thanks.
Do you also have a bad network connection/sim locks? Then you should read this topic. It could be a faulty battery.

Yeah my sim is deactivated but I think that's a sim problem. I spoke to my network provider to reactivate it tomorrow. Thanks for that thread I must've missed it somehow. Hopefully its just a battery problem so I can just get a replacement.
