Chemicals and the oleophobic layer - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys im still new but I had a few other questions having to do with my nexus 4. So I was wondering what what chemicals can damage my screen. For example can either Rubbing alcohol or vinegar damage or wear off the protective layer, which im not sure if its an oleophobic layer on the Nexus 4. Also how long would it take for this layer to wear off with just regular every day use? thx in advance

Here's a thread with people talking about it.

Nexus One scratches

I've kept my Nexus super fresh, but I'm starting to notice some wear&tear in the form of scratches on the chin... their are small chips of the what feels like Teflon spray that are missing near the 3 pins and mini usb. Underneath is what seems to be a shinier plastic so what I guess I'm asking is has anyone else experienced this and if so do you think the back and bottom piece made out of the same material. The back is plastic but if it's the same material I'd consider sanding it down and see a shinier nexus or possibly paint it. Let's hear your suggestions

Im having the same issue with what seems to be coating chipping on the bottom edge near and behid the charging port. I tend to keep very good care of my phone and have no idea whats causing it... ive never thought about sanding it down to the material below though.

The battery door and the bottom are the same material, but the strip in between the two that wraps around the housing is aluminum i think.
All right well when I'm off school I'm gonna tape off the aluminum and sand it with a light sandpaper
Il keep you guys posted

Nope. I have three different kinds of cases and they all do their job pretty well. I guess it just depends on which case you use.
Using a Diztronic case since December and have no problem with the bezel getting scratched.
My bezel is getting scratched just by being my pocket!!! I've never put anything my pocket besides the phone not have I ever put the phone with the screen facing down.

Using the LG bumper, no scratches

I use a diztronic case and official bumper. My bezel looks like hell. I work outside and my pockets get a lot of grit in them throughout the day.

I'm using the diztronic tpu case since jan and my bezel has a good amount of scratches too :/
Used the Diztronic TPU case for 2 weeks and got a ton of scratches on the bezel on the top end and bottom end of the phone; had none before, and haven't gotten any more after.
Not the case's fault per say, but the "chrome" finish scratches very easily, so if an otherwise harmless bit of grit gets trapped between the case and the bezel it gets it's sandpaper action on.

Its like the case is trapping dirt and its then scratching it

Every tpu / hard case I have ever had has scratched the bezel in one way or another, however not as much as if it wasn't on there, as others said grit/muck/dust gets trapped between the phone and the case, as the cases are pretty tight but can move (i.e. if you squeeze the sides of the case with a tpu case) and this cuases the sratches. I use the Official bumper and have had no problems on the N4, but I take it off and clean it/the phone pretty regularly, however the the design of the bumper means the upper rim of the case is lifted off the screen/bezel by 0.5-1 mm.
Best way to combat this is to give it a quick clean every day, but even then it will still happen.
I'm using a Kayscase which I ordered before they were completely stocked -- I tell you this because the case has no logo. I ordered another case by BoxWave (the Blackout LG Nexus case) -- it turned out to be the exact same case as the Kayscase (Slim Soft Gel Cover). They seem to do an excellent job of keeping the Nexus 4 scratch-free (face, back and bezel). I like this case because it's unobtrusive and allows me to lay the phone face down on flat surfaces.

Scratchs on screen

Hi,
My phone Just felt on the ground, and there is now some scratchs on the screen... These are micro scratches, but i would like to know if any of you have some tips for remove them... Thanks in advance

You can not remove them but you can install a good screen protector to hide the scratches.

I've ordered this one http://www.gadgetshieldz.in/google-lg-nexus-4-e960-screen-protector.html#product498 and the Ringke Fusion Case... I hope these are good products, because the case i have right now is really bad, it dropped the phone before my n4 hit the ground...

Their not really removable. Other than buying a new screen an digitizer, you're stuck with them.
If they are really really tiny surface scratches, I wonder if using that oleophobic stuff from amazon would fill them in. Seeing as the phone comes with an oleophobic coating, I wonder if that's all that got scratched. If someone has an old junk phone, I'd be curious to know if that windshield chip repair stuff would do anything.

That stuff for windshields is an epoxy, which would not look good on a phone screen. The olelophobic stuff from amazon would be worth a try.

My screen = dust magnet

Any ideas on keeping dust off of it? It builds up on the corners of my case + screen because its attracted to my screen. I'm assuming from static but I'm not sure. Dust hates me.

Do you have dirty pockets?
Yeah, the N4's naked screen really attracts dust for some reason unknown to me. None of my other phones have done it. I think it's probably because of some property of the oleophobic coating. Thankfully it wipes off pretty easily.

Do you use a case?

Just wondering if people use their G2 without a case lol I feel like it's going to snap in half if I dint have one on
I use the quick window case and it rocks.

I use the incipio stabs your.finger. case. And wtf is my phone doing putting in all these periods.

ever since the first drop which also broke my screen I always use a case right I'm using spigen slim armor also I'm first to vote
I feel like the case is mandatory on this phone. One of my only complaints about it. I wish I could get away from using a case because the size feels so much better that way but it just doesn't feel sturdy enough.
I've got the LG smart window case but I'm scared to use it because people saying it scratches the LG g2 screen

I also am using the "slim armor" it is a great case so far. I also have the screenmate "flex" screen protecter on the glass... amazing so far!

I don't use a case, but I do use a vinyl back and a screen protector. That's the best balance for me of protection and comfort.
I use the Seido kickstand case. It seems thin compared to the Trident Aegis case I had on my Sg2.
Body glove, not worth breaking the phone.

I went with no case for a few weeks had a minor drop ding up the corners and was pissed. So I used the quick window case and then got scratches on my screen around the quick window from little things getting caught around and under the window I guess. Since I got a warranty replacement recently its a case and screen protector just to be safe.

Incipio Brig. No better case out for this phone.
Casemate tough case. Its dope because the rubber wraps over the face just enough to cover the screen protector as well. Looks good and is still slim.
LG G2 ftw
Spigen case and bullet proof tempered glass screen protector. it works. I hit it with a hammer and it did not crack. i used more force and the protector shattered but not my screen
the phone is a bit slippery without a case.
I'll be getting a wood skin thing from these guys as soon as they're for sale. Supposedly by the end of the month. http://toastmade.com/Android.html
D30 case hands down the best there is.
