Yeah i just got my HTC HD2 the other day and so far ive been using the silicone case that comes with it..what ive noticed is that the phone feels so much better in hand without the case and wayy less bulky.
.my question to you guys is the build quality well enough to just put in my pocket and not scratch it. i know the battery cover is metal so no worries there but what about the soft coating on top and bottom. ?..
opinions from any of you that have not used a case? how is the condition of your hd2?
thanks.
ive had mine a week now, no case, in and out of pockets/phone holders and ive even dropped it twice (slippery bastid!)
not a scratch/scuff/mark other than pesky fingerprints!
im very impressed

using it for 4 months now, pretty heavy usage, geocaching, outdoors, pockets, and so on, and i am betting that you would say it is a new phone if you see it .
absolutely no signs of wear. for sure after few years of noka nseries, this is real delight.

I am interested to know how durable is the rubbery material and the rigid camera bezel under these conditions. Please share your experience. Does it scratch? Dent? Deep scratch/dent? Tiny hairline scratch?
1) Dropped
2) Carelessly placing it on the table or rough surface
3) Bumped it walking into something
4) Dropped it from your seat
5) Using it with the ring still on your finger next to the camera bezel?
Just how durable is this HD2's build material?
I personally agree with the reviewers about the build quality being just awesome. HD2 users can confidently use the phone without a case with ease as the metal n rubber coating pretty much wont get scratched / damaged easily. but.. one thing ppl have been talking bout is the glass screen cracking. i've dropped it once but so far so good, no scratches / cracks at all. but overall i would still say, really really good build quality.
I never had any screenprotectors or any screen protecting cases. Although I use it a bit without care (put the phone in a pocket without caring to much if there are any "scratchers" in it) I haven't noticed any scratch on my screen yet.
But I do have a silicon jacket! Not to protect the casing, but to protect the screen. I have seen way too many pictures of HD2's with a broken screen. And the screen was always broken in one of the corners. The silicon case (same model as shipped with the tmous HD2) definitely protects the corners of the screen when the HD2 drops. (tested )
FYI I have the HD2 for 5 months now

it is serious bull****, as leo's screen CAN be scratched. glass is covered with some plastic layer and just a tiny little bit of sand in Your pocket can do the damage.
I recall reading on one thread about somebody using a silicone cover on their hd2 and when they took it off it peeled the covering from the metal back plate so beware of certain silicone covers !!
Otherwise good solid build quality !! compared to iPhone
how many "no service" "cracked screen""missing button" "no sound"
"battery completely dead" iPhones will be listed on ebay today ? lol.
I wouldn't dream of using my HD2 without the leather case it came with, all other HTC phones I have had (four of them) I have taken them out of the box and put them right into my pocket.
But the HD2 is too nice and valuable to me to let it get tattered, I gently place it on tables just in case the silver cutting on the camera gets dented, in fact, 99 times out of 100 I place it on the case.
But then again I might just be overly anal about keeping it prestine.

Out of nowhere i got two scratches on my screen yesterday. Don't ask how..still in mourning...
Hope my experience can help someone!
Just bought G Note and a flip cover (not original one) in order to protect it as much as possible!
After some usage, i noticed circular area of the screen where S-Pen was not working! Started in reading about calibration issues, but nothing solved my problem...I therefore decided to wait until official ICS and, if problem still existing, to send phone to repair center
Searching every day on internet, I finally found the reason of my issue.....the magnetic closing clip of the cover (5-6 mm of diameter!)
It seems also clearly stated into Samsung's user manual....
Immediately removed the cover and after 5min..NO PROBLEM ANYMORE AT ALL...
These the very good point....actually the magnetic cover for all type of phone is not recommended!! It will effected our phone....

Thanks for the Info Mate!
It must be a particularly strong magnet on your case. I've been using mine trouble free as well.
How you determine if the case you are looking at has a strong magnet or not is another question...
Zuber
...attached you can find the incriminated cover (color is because Note is from my girlfriend ....even if I have G-Note too!!)
As you can see the magnet (I have removed it from the cover) is not big (thickness is something like 1mm). Approaching it to steel, it starts in exercising force at approximately 0.5cm!
As additional info, no problems were existing by writing with fingers! The issue is with S-Pen because the magnet interfere with it!
Here also the link where I could find my way out!....
....sorry..it seems it is forbidden to post external links!.....
I'm attaching an additional picture from this site with issue similar to my one, but bigger area (mine was something like 1.5 cm and located exactly on top of the clip)
I would definitely agree with that! I bought a quite expensive ZENUS cover purposely because it has a button on the front and not a magnet. Unfortunately there's a magnet at the back which is used to keep the stand at its place. 2 days after starting to use this cover I got s-pen problems presented exactly at the same screen area where the magnet was located. Lines got thinner and deviated at this area, so I had to rip off the magnet and replace it with Velcro. All problems are gone now.
have a Zenus too
Hi,
I bought a Zenus too, and I'm using it since February.
The magnet is quite small, never had any issues.
Can't post pictures, but its a kaki coloured brown, fake leather, and some stripes.

That's the one I got. Unfortunately I did't take screenshots of the display issue but it was located at the lower left part of the screen - just where the magnet sits at the back. The defect: nothing when trying to draw something over or fusiform deviation of the lines drawn in this area (when pressing harder) - just like the shape of a magnetic field...
p.s. as popo72 said - no problems when drawing with fingers.
could these cases hardbrick our note!?!? XD

Id say get another cover, the one i bought seems to have a weak magnet, just enough to hold it in place when closing. no problems whatsoever. you can get it for around 15 euros on the net if its to your liking.

ditch the flip cases... the note is beautiful as it is... bare naked
as for the fear of scratching the screen... i for one had doubts when i first got my note but i've had mine for 2 months now without a screen protector and not a single scratch...
i don't take special care with my note and i treat it as i would any other phones i've had... it goes in my pocket with keys and coins but so far no scratches.. makes me wonder other posts which says they scratched their screens so easily...
i'm happy with with my gorilla glass...

if you find that your back cover has a creak and feels loose and a bit flimsy (like mine did) - you could put single pieces of electric tape along the sides of the battery on the phone itself or even on the batt if you want to - and then a small square piece on the top right corner where its all white (on the phone, not back).
dont matter the size really, just need it to make a cushion between the phone and backcover. the phone feel so much more "solid" imo and i hated the creaks!!! theyre GONE NOW. thought id share. :good:
I take my rear cover off daily and started noticing this creak after a few months. I had a little bit of scratches on bezel so I ended up replacing the frame. As I was taking it apart I noticed small broken pieces of plastic that help clip the battery door down. Replacing the frame not only made my phone look better, but also fixed the noise I was having.
PS. It's really easy to fix the frame, unlike the GS3

Btw decided to stick a strip of duct tape on each side of the battery then put it back in its slot. The fit is really snug but low behold vraks be gone and it is solid so thanks for the tip!
Well you need to look for a tear down video.. It's quite simple when you see it.

Has any one found a bumper case for the yotphone 2 yet
some retailers including yota are providing them free with handset
yota customer services wont stipulate where from but just keep watching for any news. internet search doesnt show any one yet providing them . would be usefull!!!!
I got mine as part of a promotion for orders during most of January. As you say, some retailers are selling them along with the handset. Have you tried asking the facebook page? They seem pretty good with answering questions.
sorry but no face book or any other social network member, guess i will have to wait for yota or someone to enlighten me
Fair enough. Sorry then dude, hope they start being sold separately eventually for you.
Just thought would mention that the bumper is for sale on the yota website now. It may have been a while but just a heads up for those still looking for one.

I Bought an aluminium one on eBay. Short review and some pics:
- fit is OK, no slack
- finish looks OK, mine is matte black
- protrudes a bit to the front and the back (so the device does not lie on the glass when put down on a perfectly flat surface)
- edges are quite sharp, might leave marks on the case in due time. bumper has some soft tape on the inside, but that doesn't cover the sharp edges. The hole in the bottom for USB and microphone has these sharp edges too, not comfortable as I usually support the phone with my pinky there.
- adds about 2mm in width and 3mm in length to the phone. (7.2 x 14.8 cm with bumper, 7 x 14.5 cm without). Not too bad, but you can feel the difference initially.
- buttons can be operated OK, although power button does not stick out that much.
- small clasp in the corner
All in all not bad for a couple of dollars. I don't own the bumper as sold by Yota Devices, so I can't compare it.
Hopefully it will absorb some impact when falling on the floor too, but I will leave that part to someone else to review.
edit 1: some additions after 2 weeks of use:
- There seems to be some impact on reception. In an area with low signal strength, the bumper seems to cause the connection to become unstable/drop. Removing the bumper restores the connection. In good reception areas it's harder to note the impact.
- The sharp edges at the bottom are annoying me, I'll have to smooth them out, or lose the bumper.
- No scratches (yet) on the phone though from the bumper
edit 2: Don't know how I missed this earlier, but GPS reception is heavily impacted by this bumper
I went for a run yesterday, and my Endomondo app could not get a good lock. The map only showed approximate location, but it wouldn't start recording my run based on that. After 15 minutes still no lock, until I thought of the bumper. Removed it, and got a solid lock after 3 seconds...

I've only received it today, so can't comment on long-term use, but the sharp edges are on the inside as well. The little review above is mainly positive in the price/value department, the Yota Devices bumper might be higher quality.

I have a bumper case which came with the device but I don't know if it's from yotaphone. The bumper feels like silicone to me may be it's gel. I prefer gel cases. It feels flimsy.
I have the rubber bumper from yota itself, nice thing.
happy with it for 15usd
Yota Bumper
My "official" Yota Phone bumper arrived, here's a short review:
Material:
Not sure what the material is called, but it's like a matte rubber, but less flexible than rubber, thougher. It's somewhat grippy, but not too much. Doesn't feel like gel or silicone to me.
Dimensions:
It adds 2 mm in width, and 3 mm in length to the phone (just like the aluminium one). It fits nicely, altough the sides are slightly 'floppy', you can stretch it away from the phone easily. I can imagine that only getting slighty worse, not better over time.
features:
The bumper does not have 'real' plastic or metal buttons, buttons are just molded into the rubber. The back side has a thicker rim than the front.
Comparison with the aluminium one:
I have to say the cheap aluminium case looks slightly more classy to me, a bit more svelte, with nice paint & real buttons. It does have a small buckle, which some may find distracting.
The rubbery Yota one looks a bit more ordinary, less luxurious, to my taste. However the aluminium one does have practical drawbacks: sharp edges (especially annoying on the bottom opening), impact on reception (both mobile and particularly GPS, see below), and it might scratch the device at some time, although I haven't seen that in a few weeks of use.
The metal one takes a bit more care to put on, to prevent scratches, the rubber Yota one slips on in a second.
BTW: I updated the aluminium bumper review to mention poor GPS reception

Agreed, This looks like the bumper you can get from the Russian yotaphone store... they even do it in different colours

Does anyone know how to obtain the official yota bumper if one does not live in the UK or Russia (I am in Canada)? I have contacted the UK yota store but they will not ship outside of the UK. I cannot find it anywhere else with the usual online dealers (clove, expansys, ...). Thanks.

It's sold in other countries too (I purchased mine from the French Yotaphone website), but this will be of limited benefit to you until they add Canada/USA to the list... (on a side note, anyone knows when the North America Indigogo campaign ends, and when the phone will be officially launched there?)
If you want, I have a trip planned to Canada in late August, I can certainly purchase one and either hand it to you if you live close to Montreal, or post it from there using local post services if you're too far away (Canada is definitely a biiig country).
Let me know if you're interested.
Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?

I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.
Same here
I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.
I wish you hadn't said anything.. I have them too
Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.
Sent from my SM-N950U1 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
